Chapter 3: Ruler of All that is Evil

Addison had been in Seattle a few days now. The consultation she had come to do had been done. She'd had two interns assigned to the case with her. One she had asked for and the other Richard had told her to take along. She really needed to know who this Meredith girl that had enamored her husband was. She wanted to hate her but couldn't. She was bright and sweet. Patients liked her and so did the attendings. As for the second intern her wealth of knowledge had Addison surprised. In her opinion if there weren't any policies and rules in place, Aelwyne could skip her intern year and be at the level of a senior resident. Were it not for the fact that she had yet to choose a specialty. She had been great with her and she had heard from Burke that in cardio among other specialties she had excelled. The girl was smart and quick on her feet. She was also very pretty.

'Like those eyes' Addison thought to herself. If the saying was true and the eyes were the window to the soul. Then her soul must be all warm and sunny. But then there were glimmers here and there. Glimmers that showed sadness. But the girl was quick. One second the sadness and sorrow was there then the next it was blinked away. Addison wondered what secrets she might hold on to. She knew at least one of those secrets.

The night she had arrived after the heated conversation with Derek and the greeting with Richard the girl had been tasked with accompanying her. Richard had practically ordered her to go with Addison. She had a good reason. She was the one taking care of the chief but he dismissed her and Derek also said she wouldn't be needed. Though maybe it was because he was furious with Richard.

Aelwyne had accompanied Addison all the way to her hotel room. As they opened the door they shuffled in with the luggage. Addison stood in the doorway, her eyes unseeing as if she had been in deep thought so Aelwyne grabbed the suitcase. She placed it next to the others and walked back to Addison. Carefully she pried open her fingers to take the purse and put it away. At some point Addison had moved inside and the door had closed. As Aelwyne walked the purse over to the nightstand Addison let out a soft whimper and crumbled to the floor.

'I didn't think he'd go and do this' she sobbed.

'It's my fault, I pushed him' she continued tears streaming down.

'I just wanted him to see me you know. But he didn't. He didn't care. And I was alone. I had no one. And Mark was there. And I just let go. I said I was sorry. I stood out in the rain for hours begging him to let me in. But he wouldn't. He wouldn't come. But what did I expect he never came. And then he just left. But it's my fault. It was me. It was me!' Addison shook with the force of her sobs.

Aelwyne walked to her and pulled her up to stand. Then she walked her to the bed and sat on it with her. Addison cried and cried and apologized over and over again. Aelwyne stayed silent. She just let her cry on her shoulder until the sobs reduced to sniffles here and there. Addison straightened herself and apologized once more but this time to Aelwyne.

'I'm sorry for breaking down like that in front of you. Thank you for staying. Do you think you could forget this?' She asked quietly.

Aelwyne simply looked at her and stood up. She walked towards the door. 'I'm not sure, what am I supposed to forget again?' She let out a simple smile which Addison mirrored

'By the way Dr. Shepherd welcome to Seattle Grace. The rain is not so bad you know. Oh and remember, breathe.' And with that she was out the door.

Addison stared after her for a little while. Then she fell asleep.

As if called by the memories Aelwyne walked toward her with a few patient charts in her hands.

"Aelwyne, seems you're with me again today." Addison said, still reviewing the chart.

"Seems like it, Dr. Shepherd. Hope you don't mind." Aelwyne replied sweetly.

"So you already decided how much you hated me right?" Addison asked, finally looking her in the eye.

Aelwyne looked up at her. She knew why she was asking that of course. Meredith was one of her best friends. And she was suffering because Addison was here. But Addison was very hard to hate. She was an excellent teacher and for the little time she had been here she seemed very fair and determined to share her knowledge with all of the interns. She had even defended Meredith from a patient.

"I…" Aelwyne began but stopped. "I don't hate you." She said in little more than a whisper.

"Well? Did you?" Addison insisted. "And stop mumbling. Surgeons don't mumble."

"I don't hate you." She said a little louder.

Addison didn't know why but her chest swelled up with those words. Smiling she turned and motioned for Aelwyne to follow. Izzie had witnessed the whole exchange and as she crossed paths she leaned to whisper at Aelwyne.

"Some friend you are." And kept on walking with a wicked grin splattered on her face.

Aelwyne tensed but kept on following her attending. The whole exchange didn't go unnoticed by Addison but she kept quiet as they were reaching her first patient.

"I'm only here for one more rotation then I go back to New York so I need you to absorb as much information as you can for when you need to report to the other attending." Addison said stopping them both outside of the first patient.

Aelwyne looked surprised and she allowed her eyes to show it. She tried to say something but stopped herself so Addison walked in and they began their rounds.

Everything looked good so far. Until they got to the fifth and final patient. Aelwyne had been the one doing the ultrasounds to get more experience as Addison said. Her brows furrowed and she leaned into the screen.

"Dr. Shepherd, could you take a look?" She asked with a bit of urgency.

"What is it?" Asked Addison leaning into her to get a better look.

Addison took over and found what had the intern so concerned. She turned to her patient who was currently at 28 weeks of term.

"Is something wrong doc?" The patient asked nervously.

"Stacey the baby shows signs of pulmonary sequestration." Addison explained.

"What is that?" Stacey asked.

"Dr. Neirhem?" Addison directed.

"It seems that one of the developing lung tissues is not attached to the pulmonary arterial blood supply." Aelwyne said to the patient who still looked confused.

"This means that while the lung is developing it will not help the baby breathe." Addison explained.

"What do we do?" Stacey asked, scared.

"Well luckily I'm still here so I can do the surgery to correct the issue so that when he is born he'll be able to breathe and not undergo further surgeries." Addison reassured.

"A surgery while he is still inside of me? But this will help?" Stacey asked incredulously.

"I-" Addison started.

"I can assure you ma'am. Dr. Shepherd is one of the best neonatal surgeons in the country. She will definitely get your baby all fixed up. So no need to worry. You are both in great hands" Aelwyne added holding onto the patient's hand with a smile.

"Ok. Ok then. Please take care of my baby." Stacy stammered.

After going over the surgery and drawing some labs both Aelwyne and Addison started getting ready for surgery. The OR had been booked and the patient was already prepped and ready to go. All that was needed was to scrub in and go.

"Thank you." Addison said as she began scrubbing.

"What? Why?" Aelwyne replied.

"What you said to the patient. What you said about not hating me. Letting me teach you even when your friends don't approve of me. Besides, haven't you heard I'm Ruler of All that is Evil." Addison said, with a smirk but not looking at her.

"Well nothing I said was a lie. I have no reason to hate you. And whether or not a friend or not friend approves I'll learn everything I can. Besides you're a great teacher so it's kinda hard to not let you do it. And being the Ruler of All that is Evil is not so bad." Aelwyne said lifting her hands ready to go in.

"Let's build a miracle shall we." She smiled through her mask and walked into the OR.

"This girl" Addison chuckled, shaking her head and following suit.

Surgery was a complete success. Addison had Aelwyne deal with the post op while she went to talk to the chief about leaving today. There had been a glimmer of sadness at the mention of her leaving in Aelwyne's eyes. However as always it was there and then gone.

"I need you a few more days Addie. Please. I'm not even back yet. I'll be back tomorrow and we can talk." Richard said walking away from her.

"Richard I told you today." She countered and then "Fine. But just until tomorrow then I'm gone. Ok?" She said giving in.

"See ya Addie. You are the best" he said walking away.

"He's never going to let me leave." She said to herself.

"You still should." Said a voice behind her.

"Hello to you too honey." She said turning to him.

"Don't honey me. You should've never come here. Do you not get that I despise you. You make everyone miserable." He spit out. "Tell me something did Mark already cheat on you too?" Derek smiled wildly.

Addison's eyes threatened to let out tears free but she controlled them. 'We don't cry in public. We don't cry at all.' Bizzy's voice echoed through her head.

"Dr. Shepherd! Found you. Could you help me with something?" And there she was again. Aelwyne to the rescue.

Both Derek and Addison looked at her.

"I'm talking to the hot one." She blurted out before she could check herself.

"I think that's me." Addison said, watching Aelwyne's cheeks go beat red.

She walked away from Derek to Aelwyne turned her and ushered her away.

"I- I'm sorry. I didn't mean- like I didn't think… I'm sorry." Aelwyne stammered out full blush on and looking everywhere but at Addison.

"Oh… so I'm not the hot one?" Addison said, in a sort of whine.

"No! That's not what I meant. I mean yes you are but like I- I didn't mean to like… you know" Aelwyne attempted.

"It's ok. Anyway what did you need?" She asked with a chuckle.

"Need?" Aelwyne replied.

"Back there you said you need something from the hot Dr. Shepherd." She said with a smirk.

"Oh I didn't need… well I thought I could help you. I'm sorry it's not my place but it looked like a heated discussion. I'm sorry it's none of my business. I was just trying to… I'm sorry" she explained, still not looking at Addison.

"I see. Thank you." And she began to walk away.

Aelwyne stayed frozen to the spot. Still a little flushed.

"Well, come on. You're my intern after all and we need to eat. I'm starving." Addison said turning to her.

"Right. Ok" and she was off. Following Addison to the cafeteria.

Here is chapter 3! Hope you like itand it wasn't too short for you guys. Just so you know things will speed up soon. You'll see some references to the show here and there. I'll try to keep it as close to it as I can but be aware things will still change. The addition of a character does that. Also know that I will attempt to be as accurate as I can when I go into medical limbo. However these stories are fictional so don't take everything literal. Anyway we got through that I'll work more on chapter 4 before uploading it. You guys have a nice one and remember leave a comment. Tell me if you think chapters are too short or long k. Oh and breathe k just breathe.
