Chapter 9: Lessons

One thing that Meredith already misses from the muggle world is the powers of electronic technologies.

She's used to being able to set an alarm clock, and that's how she ended up sleeping so late, and having to run all the way to their first period classes.

When they arrive at the classroom for "transfiguration," she is relieved to see that no professor has arrived yet.

"Thank goodness-" says Meredith.

She's spoken too soon though because the hawk that had been sitting on the desk at the front leaps off of it, and transforms (transfigures) itself into professor Miranda Bailey, who stares down at her Meredith disapprovingly.

"I…" says Meredith quietly.

"Ten points from Ravenclaw," professor Bailey sighs and nods for her to take the seat next to Cristina.

"You could have woken me-" Meredith whispers.

"Shh- you don't want to get in trouble again, do you-" Cristina whispers back and then turns away from her.

Meredith sighs, and takes out her quill, and her scroll.

She'll try to find a faster route here tomorrow morning.

The next class with her own mother is even worse.

"Most of you will never appreciate the subtle art of potion-making…" says professor Ellis Grey. "But for those who may be so inclined… I can teach you to bottle fame, and create salves that will heal all wounds within minutes," says Ellis, and everyone around Meredith (especially Cristina) is in awe of her.

"Some of you are interested so far, though some of you appear to already have lost interest, or feel that you can simply choose to not pay attention-" Ellis snaps at Meredith, who has been burying her head in her scroll this entire time.

"Tell me, Ms. Grey, what are the most common causes of a post-operative fever, in humans?" Ellis Grey glares at her.

"Ah- ah-" Meredith freezes. She knows that she knows this answer, it's just the pressure that's getting to her.

Meanwhile, Cristina raises her hand so high that Meredith fears that it'll fall off of her.

"Yes, Ms. Yang," Ellis Grey calls on her.

"The 5 W's," says Cristina. "Wind, water, walking, wound, and wonder-drugs," she says proudly.

"Very good, Ms. Yang," says Ellis Grey. "As for some of you… You've got a lot of studying ahead of you. Now, shall we move on?"

Meredith groans, as Cristina smiles widely, and her mother gets on with her lesson.

She's just hoping that some of her classmates haven't figured out they're related yet.

After those disastrous academic experiences for Meredith, she and Cristina head into the Great Hall for their mid-day meal.

At least during lunchtime, Meredith figures she can't become further humiliated, or at least, she certainly hopes not.
