Chapter 10: Up
"You know, I think magical meals actually taste better than the muggle versions," says Cristina.
"Maybe it's because they're magically enhanced, some sort of spell," Meredith shrugs.
"Either way, I'm all for it. I wonder if they'd share their recipes with us," says Cristina.
"Maybe," Meredith giggles. "Hey look, the mail is coming in!"
Over their heads, thousands of owls fly in, delivering letters from home, and even small packages.
Cristina is met with a stack of muggle magazines, courtesy of her mother.
"Are those…?" Meredith points at them.
"She wants me to plan my own wedding, even though I'm eleven, and I'm not in a relationship-" says Cristina.
"Whoa-" Meredith chuckles. "Oh no, I think that's for me…" Meredith groans.
Sure enough, a small crystal ball is deposited into Meredith's hand from an owl.
"Hey, I've heard of those-" says Cristina. "It's a Rememberall, it lights up red if you've forgotten something!"
"Problem is, I can't remember what I've forgotten-" Meredith groans. "It's probably from my mother, she might still be roasting me for not knowing the answers in lessons."
"Hey, your mom cares about your future, it's a good thing," says Cristina.
Another letter is deposited in front of Meredith, and this time, it's from her muggle father.
"Thinking of you, sweetheart, Thatcher."
"You have a cute family," says Cristina. "My dad died in a car accident when I was nine."
"I'm sorry-" says Meredith.
"Nah, it's okay," says Cristina.
"Let's go early to our next class so that we're not late this time," suggests Meredith.
"Hey, you were late. I was early," says Cristina.
"Yeah, thanks for that-" Meredith giggles.
"Next time I'll try to wake you," Cristina promises.
"Thank you," says Meredith.
For their next class, they gather in the field outside.
"Welcome to your first flying lesson!" says the professor.
Meredith and Cristina grin at each other.
"Now, stand on the left side of your broom, hold out your right hand, and say 'up,' and it will come to you," says the professor.
Meredith does so, she stands at the ready, and calls 'up,' to her broom, but much to her dismay, her broom does not come to her.
"Up!" says Cristina confidently.
Cristina's school broom lifts off of the ground, and into the palm of her hand.
"Good work, Ms. Yang," says the professor.
Meredith scoffs under her breath and tries again.
Eventually, she gives up, and she has to lift it into her hand.
"So much for being Ellis Grey's daughter," a student sneers at her from the other side of the courtyard.
"What did you just say!?" Meredith squeezes her fists together and rages.
"I said, 'so much for being Ellis Grey's daughter,' because you surely don't have her magic!" The boy continues to tease her.
"I'll show you-" says Meredith, as she picks up her broom, mounts it, and kicks off of the ground.
This time, the broom does respond to her magic and lifts off the ground in the other boy's direction. She recognizes him as the dark-haired boy that Addison had called out to that day on the train, only this time, he isn't accompanied by his chisel-jawed friend.
"Squib girl thinks she can fly," the boy continues to jeer.
Meredith frowns, and tilts her broom forward, and starts chasing after him, but he's much quicker than she is, even on her broomstick, and he keeps dodging out of the way.
And that's when Meredith Grey's luck starts to run out again because the broom seems to be gaining a mind of its own, and it is flying her up and out, and all over the place.
