Chapter 30: Crashes and Marks

After a few more rounds Aelwyne and Addison fell asleep naked in a tangle of limbs only to be woken up a few hours later by a page. Aelwyne groaned at the sound and buried her head back on Addison's neck while Addison reached for the pagers.

"We have to go in." Addison said her voice was raspy and low from sleep.

"Can you remind me why I decided to save lives? I wanna stay here with you." Aelwyne whined sleepily.

"Alright child, up we go." Addison chuckled as she shook her and began to get up.

"What kind of page? You get paged too? I thought it was just mine. Is that really the time? 4 a.m.?" Aelwyne rubbed her eyes.

"Yes, and it's a 9-1-1. All hands on deck." Addison called as she went to leave the room, wrapped in a blanket. At that Aelwyne became more awake and alert.

"Ok. Ten minute shower and then we can go." She said as she rummaged through her drawers and closet for clothes.

"Care if I join?" Addison asked.

"I don't think that's a good idea." Aelwyne chuckled.

"Relax, Neirhem. I'm not going to jump you in the shower." Addison teased playfully.

"Pity." Aelwyne giggled as she ran to the bathroom.

As hard as it was for the both of them they managed to just shower and leave. Addison grabbed them both an apple as they ran out the door and now they were happily munching on them.

"I'm going to need to find an on-call room after we get people situated." Addison before she took another bite.

"Already thinking ahead? I like it." Aelwyne smirked, making Addison choke a bit.

"That's not what I meant." She replied after calming down.

"What I meant was that we didn't get much sleep so a nap might be good. What did you not mean?" Aelwyne asked with an amused grin.

"You know where you were going with that. You tease." Addison gave her a knowing look matching her grin.

"No idea what you are on about, Addie." Aelwyne shrugged playfully.

"So, are you going to call me anything other than Addie now?" Addison asked after a few minutes.

"You want me to give you a pet name?" Aelwyne asked back.

"I'm not a pet." Addison whined playfully.

"Oh I know. But I am definitely your pet." Aelwyne joked.

"Aelwyne." Addison scolded with a laugh.

"What's this about Addie?" Aelwyne asked a bit more seriously.

"I don't know. It's just my friends can call me Addie and yours can call you Ael, so…" Addison began but stopped letting out a sigh.

"So you want a name only I will use for you." Aelwyne finished for her. "I guess I can manage that. It won't be Red though."

"God, no." Addison replied quickly. "Yours won't have sweetness anywhere near it." She added, making Aelwyne laugh.

"Are you sure? Sweetness is so cute though." She continued to chuckle.

"No. No sweet anything." Addison huffed. "Anyway, what will you call me?" She looked at her expectantly.

"Princess." Aelwyne threw her a look and laughed when she saw the frown on Addison's face.

"I'm not a princess." She stated, crossing her arms on her chest.

"Fine, my queen." Aelwyne said and as they stopped at the red light she turned and mocked a bow.

"Stop it, Ael." Addison whined a pout setting on her lips.

"Ok. Ok. Baby Girl." Aelwyne grinned as she noticed Addison's cheeks grow red.

"I'm no baby." She tried to whine but could not as the corners of her lips began to curve up in a smile.

"You're my baby." Aelwyne smiled sweetly, lifting her brows.

"F-fine." Addison grinned.

"How about me?" Aelwyne asked.

"You are my… bug." Addison tilted her head and grinned.

"Hey, I'm no bug." Aelwyne protested.

"Yes you are. You are my ladybug, my cuddle bug, my love bug. You are my bug." Addison reasoned.

"But bugs are annoying. I'm not annoying." Aelwyne countered.

"Yes you are." Addison replied as Aelwyne let out an exaggerated gasp. "You are an annoyingly teasy and flirty bug too."

"You enjoy my teasing." Aelwyne said pouting herself now.

"Yes and from last night I know you enjoy mine a bit more, bug." Addison threw her an amused smirk and a wink.

"Addison." Aelwyne semi-scolded and then began to chuckle. "I did enjoy it, baby girl." She added as she brought the car to a stop.

"Ooo red light!" Addison cheered.

"Why are you so excited?" Aelwyne asked but her response came in the form of a kiss. "I like red lights now." She said as they parted then they heard them.

Sirens were approaching and a lot of them. Aelwyne looked at the rearview mirror to see at least six heading in the hospital's direction.

"You should take a left here and go the back way. If not we'll be stuck." Addison suggested.

"Right. What the hell happened?" Aelwyne said as she turned.

"Green, go." Addison said as the light turned.

They made it to the hospital and went straight to the E.R., wearing trauma gowns on top of their civilian clothes. Aelwyne made her way to Bailey while Addison took in the state of the E.R. with high school kids everywhere since a drunk driver had hit their bus.

"Addison, thank the heavens, can you-" Richard began but she knew what he needed.

"I'll direct the E.R." She called as she made her way to the desk to the admission desk.

"Thanks. I'm going up for surgery." He replied as she threw him a nod.

"Montgomery, Yang and Neirhem are up next." Bailey called.

"Doctor Montgomery, they said they managed to extract the two critical patients and they are 5 minutes out." A nurse said as she hung up the phone. "Most prominent injuries are head and a deep laceration to the abdomen among some broken bones."

"Thank you." Addison said and turned to Bailey. "Take them, we have a deep laceration to the abdomen and the other is a head injury, I'll get Shepherd and Torres."

Aelwyne and Cristina followed Bailey out to the ambulance bay to wait for them to arrive. Cristina kept on bouncing on the ball of her feet as Aelwyne swayed.

"Stop that. You're both making me anxious." Bailey said as she kept on throwing looks to the entrance. Both Aelwyne and Cristina looked at each other and stopped, moving next to each other.

"Angel Eyes I see Satan enjoys biting." Cristina eyed the marks on her neck with a chuckle.

"What?" Aelwyne's hand shot up to the spots before letting out a groan.

"Yep." Cristina chuckled some more.

"At least wear a scarf or a turtle neck next time." Bailey huffed as Cristina stifled a laugh and Aelwyne let out a sigh.

"They're here!" Aelwyne called, thankful for the change on subject.

"Alright. Neirhem, take that one. Yang, the other one." Bailey said, pointing to each ambulance.

"Eva Thuney-Spear, 35. Blunt force trauma to the left side of the head and possible fracture of the left humerus and dislocation of wrist. Unconscious at the scene. BP 90/60." The paramedic called as he stepped out.

"Alright let's move in. We need some x-rays and neuro." Aelwyne called and Bailey nodded her way.

As she went in Addison directed them to trauma bay one where Derek was already waiting. After the paramedics relied the information once more, Derek did the neuro exam while Aelwyne began to hook up the patient to the monitors. Derek found the right pupil to be dilated while the left was still reactive. Callie came in to take a look at the arm and reset the dislocated wrist.

"We'll need a CT scan and X-rays." Derek called as a girl came busting into the room.

"Mom." She cried.

"Get her out of here." Derek commanded but the girl would not listen and refused to move. She had some cuts and bruises and kept holding onto her arm.

"Honey, you need to go with them." Aelwyne said as the girl continued to fight.

"No! What's going on with my mom?" She demanded. "Mom! Mom, wake up." She kept on calling after her. Aelwyne could tell she was in a great deal of pain and needed to be treated.

"Ok. Look at me." Aelwyne said as she approached her. "Look at me." She repeated. "We are taking care of her right now. She has a head injury and we need to figure out how bad it is." She continued as the girl's eyes glued to hers. "What's your name?"

"M-Mia" Mia whimpered.

"Ok. Mia, I promise that as soon as we know more I'll inform you. No games and no hiding, ok?" Aelwyne assured her and she nodded. "Now I need you to go get checked because we don't want your mother worrying now, do we?"

"Ok." Mia said, looking at her mother.

"Ok." Aelwyne smiled as she motioned for the nurse to come forward.

"And my other mom? They were sitting together." Mia asked quickly.

"What's her name? I'll get updates on her." Aelwyne questioned.

"Caroline." Mia replied.

"I'll look for her and let you know what I find. Now why don't you go with her and she'll get you set up. I'll come find you later, ok?" She asked and Mia nodded, throwing one last look at her mom before leaving.

After CT and x-rays they found multiple fractures to the skull and brain hemorrhage so they rushed her up to surgery. Aelwyne also heard from Cristina that the other mom had massive internal damage as a shard embedded itself on her lower abdomen. As carefully as possible she updated Mia so that she would understand the severity of the injuries but also that they were both in good hands. After leaving the girl with her friends she went to scrub in with Derek who was about to begin.

"How's the daughter?" He asked quickly.

"She's scared but staying strong. I really hope we can fix this." Aelwyne replied as she was helped into her gown.

"Sloan and Torres will be coming in soon so they can make sure the facial bones are set properly. But first let's fix that bleed." Derek said. "It's a good morning to save lives." He smiled and his eyes crinkled above his mask.

"It sure feels like it." Aelwyne replied, returning his smile.

The surgery had been excruciatingly long and hard. Eva had decided to throw two more bleeds after they had repaired the first one. Thankfully Derek was able to stop them both and repaired them. Mark and Callie came soon after to do their part. Because of the different bleeds they would not know how she really fared until she woke up. After the surgery was done Aelwyne went to check on Caroline who thankfully was doing alright but was still being operated on.

"Mia?" Aelwyne called to the girl who was picking at her nails, alone.

"How are they?" She asked, hopping off the seat.

"Your mom, Caroline, is still in surgery. They are still repairing some of her organs however they should be finishing up very soon. She has been pretty stable throughout the surgery, which is great." Aelwyne explained.

"Good." Mia smiled a bit. "And my other mom?" She asked, worry returning to her eyes.

"Let's take a seat." Aelwyne said motioning for the chairs behind Mia.

"Oh my god. Is she dead?" She gasped.

"No, she isn't. But come sit down." Aelwyne insisted once more and managed to convince the girl.

"What's going on?" Mia asked.

"As I told you before, we found a bleed on the scans before surgery. As we were finishing with that one, two other places began to bleed as well. Dr. Shepherd was able to fix everything however during that time some areas of your mother's brain were depleted of blood." Aelwyne explained.

"So she wasn't getting enough blood to some parts of her brain?" Mia questioned.

"Correct." Aelwyne nodded.

"What does that mean?" Mia asked.

"It means we will need to wait until your mother wakes up to find out if there was any damage or the extent of the damage. There is also the possibility that she may not wake up." Aelwyne explained and as she did she could see the light draining out of the girl's eyes.

Mia began to cry and shake violently so Aelwyne wrapped her in her arms. Mia sobbed as she clung to her scrubs for a while and Aelwyne let her because she understood just how alone she felt at the moment.

"Mia, listen to me. We don't know that she won't wake up. We also don't know if there was any damage. But what we do know is that your mom was fighting very hard to stay alive, she did not give up. She is still fighting. So how about you don't give up either?" Aelwyne encouraged and she felt a slight nod on her chest.

"Ael?" Cristina called next to Bailey. "Surgery is done." She said and Mia immediately looked up.

"How did she do?" She asked quickly.

"She did great. We were able to repair all the internal damage." Cristina said.

"Right now she's in recovery. A nurse will come to get you as soon as she wakes up." Bailey added.

"See? Don't give up. Let's just wait for Eva. She may just need more time and more rest." Aelwyne encouraged.

"Mia. We brought you some food. There's some tables over there. Wanna come?" A girl said as she made her way to them with a tray.

"I'm not hungry." Mia said sheepishly. Bailey was about to protest when Aelwyne interjected.

"Nuh-uh. We won't have any of that. Your mom's fighting, remember? And you are not giving up either, right? Part of not giving up is taking care of yourself. So you will go and eat something with your friend. So you are ready when the nurse comes to take you to your mom and then your other mom too. Sound good?" Aelwyne looked at her, giving her a gentle smile of reassurance.

"Sounds good." Mia said getting up and walking to her friends.

After getting Mia to eat Cristina and Aelwyne went to update the charts. As always they ended up down at the tunnels on the gurney writing down notes and organizing the charts. Once done they leaned on each other for a bit.

"I need sleep." Cristina whined.

"Me too." Aelwyne joined in the sentiment.

"How long did you sleep last night?" Cristina asked cheekily but Aelwyne did not notice.

"Like 2 hours?" Aelwyne said with a yawn.

"Atta girl." Cristina smirked.

"Cristina." Aelwyne reprimanded.

"What?" She asked, amused. "Did you enjoy getting those?" She continued to mock.

"Shut up." Aelwyne groaned.

"Only 'cause I'm sleepy and your shoulder will be comfy for 15 minutes." Cristina conceded.

"Right." Aelwyne rolled her eyes.

Aelwyne was not sure how long she had closed her eyes for when their tiny but terrifying though sometimes sweet resident stunned them out of sleep.

"You lazy bums gonna work at some point tonight?" Bailey's voice brought them back to reality. Cristina jolted upright, as did Aelwyne, and groaned when she looked at her watch.

"Not even 10 minutes." She whined as Aelwyne let out a soft chuckle. Bailey eyed them both and something softened in her eyes.

"Fine." She said quickly. "Two hours. That's all you get since the other four idiots got to rest already." Bailey conceded.

"Perfect." Cristina smiled sleepily.

"Great!" Aelwyne said hopping off the gurney with her chart. "I'm going to go find Addison."

"Make sure you actually rest, Neirhem. No funny business during work hours." Bailey replied as a rising blush heated Aelwyne's cheeks.

"I… we… it's not like that. We'll sleep." Aelwyne stammered out while Cristina laughed in the background.

"Sure." Bailey pursed her lips in disbelief.

"I…" Aelwyne began.

"Go on. Your two hours will be done soon." Bailey waved her off.

"Right." Aelwyne said, her cheeks red with embarrassment as she glared at Cristina, still laughing in the background.

Cristina leaned back and closed her eyes when she felt the resident climb onto the gurney. She looked at her in surprise as Bailey leaned back and closed her eyes. Cristina was about to speak when Bailey cut her off.

"Sleep, Yang. We have work to do." Bailey said without opening her eyes. Cristina threw another side glance over and shrugged as she too closed her eyes.

Aelwyne made her way down to the E.R., now less crowded as the kids had already been treated or were in rooms. She looked at the desk in search of her girlfriend but she was not there. She was about to turn around when arms wrapped around her middle from behind, gently pulling her backwards into a hug.

"Hi Bug. You looking for someone?" Addison called as she rested her chin on Aelwyne's shoulder.

"Yeah, just my Baby Girl." Aelwyne giggled.

"You found her." Addison smiled and planted a quick kiss on her cheek.

"I'm glad." Aelwyne said, turning to face her. "Because I need a nap and I was wondering if I could steal you." She smiled sweetly.

"Well the E.R. is pretty much back to its normal chaos levels and since I was supposed to be off there aren't any surgeries that require me." Addison grinned and grabbed her hand, interlocking their fingers. "Shall we go?"

"Please." Aelwyne begged playfully.

They made their way to an on-call room instead of Addison's office so that Aelwyne could be close to her patient in case she was paged. As they walked Addison told her the extent of the accident. The drunk driver and the bus driver were pronounced dead at the scene and the worst injuries were the ones Aelwyne and Cristina had taken in. The rest were broken wrists, dislocated fingers and some cuts and bruises. Aelwyne was grateful none of the kids had had it as bad as the teacher and her wife though it was awful they had suffered so much and the bus driver had died. They were almost to the on-call room when Aelwyne heard a voice calling for her.

"Doctor Aelwyne." Mia called after as she stood in front of them.

"Mia, is everything ok?" Aelwyne asked, concerned.

"Mom is ok, she's resting now. Momma isn't awake yet. Do you know when I should worry she isn't going to wake up?" Mia asked, trying her best to remain composed, which Aelwyne admired greatly.

"Well her surgery was finished about an hour ago. Usually after surgery it takes about 45 minutes to an hour for the anesthesia to wear off." Aelwyne said and saw the rising panic in the girl's eyes. "But it was an extensive surgery. Her body will need more time to recuperate so she will remain sedated for at least two more hours." She explained watching as some relief washed over Mia.

"Oh, that's good. Ok." Mia responded with a tiny smile.

"Why don't you go back to your mom's room and rest for at least two hours as well. You need to take care of yourself for them. Remember?" Aelwyne reminded her with her own smile.

"Ok." Mia sighed. "Umm…"

"Yes?" Aelwyne questioned.

"Are you two… like together?" Mia asked, looking from Aelwyne to Addison and back.

"Oh uhh." Aelwyne chuckled a bit before nodding, throwing a glance at Addison who quickly said yes.

"You make a nice couple. Dr. Montgomery is very nice. She stayed with me for a while after you left to bring my moms to surgery." Mia smiled.

"You're right she is the nicest." Aelwyne replied with a smile. "Was our holding hands a dead give away?" She asked.

"No. It was those matching marks on your necks." Mia said and turned to go back to her mom's room. "I'll see you later."

Both Aelwyne and Addison just stared after the girl open mouthed as their faces began to heat up and their cheeks were completely red. They turned to look at each other, their eyes landing on each other's marks.

"This is your fault, you know?" Aelwyne said with a chuckle.

"You started it." Addison shot back. "I guess people really know I'm yours." Addison said as she brought her fingers over the pink marks. Aelwyne's eyes got dangerously dark as she focused on them. "Bug…", Addison called, "Ael… Aelwyne."

"Huh?" Aelwyne's eyes snapped back to hers.

"You need to rest." An amused smile on Addison's face.

"Right, sorry. See what you do to me, Baby Girl?" Aelwyne whined. "C'mon Addie, let's go to bed." She said, grabbing Addison's hand and walking into the room as she giggled.

They were both definitely exhausted because as soon as they hit the pillows they were both dead to the world, cuddled up together. About an hour had gone by when Aelwyne's pager went off, startling both women awake. Sleepily Aelwyne reached around Addison squinting with sleepy eyes to read the page.

-Eva Thuney-Spear-

She jolted up quickly fearing the worst. A lot of scenarios playing in her head. Patient woke up but cannot speak. Patient had a seizure. Patient in a comma.

"Bug." Addison snapped her back to reality and she looked down at sleepy green eyes accompanied with a sleepy smile. "I love you." Her voice raspy from sleep.

Aelwyne smiled and calmed down. "I love you too." She said before leaning down and kissing Addison's forehead. "I'll be back if it's not serious." She added and waited for her nod before she left.

"Dr. Neirhem." A nurse called as she approached the room.

"What's the status?" Aelwyne said, taking the chart.

"She fought sedation. She's awake now." The nurse informed her with a hopeful smile.

"She what?" Aelwyne asked surprised as she handed the chart right back and walked in to find a wide awake Eva. "Did you page Dr. Shepherd?"

"They did." Derek said behind her. "Let's get this exam done." He said as he walked in and began his neuro workup.

Eva passed the exam with flying colors despite the complications in the surgery. Callie and Mark came soon after to check on her as well.

"Hey kid." Mark called as he was about to leave.

"Hmm?" Aelwyne looked at him as he leaned to her ear.

"Nice marks you got there." He chuckled but before he went to walk away Aelwyne stepped on his toes. "Ouch!"

"Oops. Sorry Dr. Sloan. I'm going to get her daughter." Aelwyne threw him a mischievous grin and was about to leave when Mia came in, running.

"Dr. Aelwyne? Momma?" The girl's eyes filled with tears as her mother's eyes met hers.

"Seems like she won the battle." Aelwyne stepped next to Mia and nudged her forward.

Mia went to her mother's side and gently wrapped her arms around her. It was an awesome moment as mother and daughter hugged. All the doctors and nurses left the room to give them some privacy. Aelwyne and Derek were hanging out at the nurse's station as Mia walked out.

"I have to go tell my mom she's awake." Mia said excitedly.

"No need. I brought her to you." Addison called as she wheeled in Caroline with a few nurses. "Now they can all be together and you don't have to go hopping from floor to floor." Addison smiled.

"Thank you!" Mia said as she rushed back inside the room to help make space.

"That was thoughtful, Addie." Derek gave her a smile.

"That's why I love her." Aelwyne said as Addison stood at the counter next to her and leaned her head on her shoulder.

"Does Yang let you be this mushy around her?" Derek asked with a laugh.

"Nope." Aelwyne chuckled along with Addison.

"I'll see you two later." He called as he left.

Mia came out once more and Aelwyne and Addison straightened out somewhat reluctantly.

"Thank you. Both of you, for taking care of us." Mia said as she glanced back to see her moms talking and smiling to each other.

"It wasn't just us." Aelwyne smiled.

"I know but you two didn't sugar-code things. You told me everything straight. You reminded me to take care of myself. You were there. So thank you." Mia smiled a very wholesome smile. "And I'll also thank Dr. Shepherd, and Sloan, and Torres, and Bailey, and Yang. For bringing them both back to me." She added.

"I'm sure they'll appreciate it." Addison offered with a smile.

"Are you two really happy together?" Mia asked randomly.

"Yes." Both Aelwyne and Addison said together.

"I wonder if my moms were happy like that before I came along." Mia threw another look behind her. "They always said that having me brought them closer. Will you guys have kids too? I bet you'll be awesome moms too."

"I uh…" Aelwyne hesitated in her response which did not go unnoticed by Addison. Mia's moms called her back so she said her goodbyes and went back into the room.

"A lot of hesitation there." Addison teased a bit.

"I uh…" Aelwyne began again but stopped letting out a small nervous chuckle.

"You?" Addison pushed but Aelwyne had no chance to reply as Richard called for them.

"Addison. Aelwyne." He said as he came to a stop before them.

"Yeah?" Aelwyne replied quickly as relief washed over her features. Addison glanced at her once more before focusing on Richard.

"What's up?" She asked.

"I wanted to apologize for taking your day off. You both had been working your schedules so you would have it and I took it away from you." He said with a shrug.

"That's fine. We are doctors, Richard." Addison smiled at him as Aelwyne nodded in agreement.

"Right well. I moved some things around and you can both still have tomorrow and the rest of the night." He smiled at them.

"Really?" Aelwyne seemed excited.

"Yes. So off you go." He shooed them both away from the counter.

"Alright, alright." Addison chuckled and Aelwyne took her hand as they walked away.

Addison was still worried about Aelwyne's hesitation when it came to children but that was something they would need to talk about later and after a longer nap or actual sleep. They were walking towards the entrance when they spotted an elegant blonde lady walking in. Addison stopped making Aelwyne trip a bit before.

"Addison? Baby Girl?" Aelwyne called her softly. "What's wrong? Who is that?" She asked as she followed the redhead's gaze.

"My mother." Addison replied nervously, squeezing Aelwyne's hand.

"And that's a bad thing?" Aelwyne asked.

"It's not a good thing." Addison said, taking a deep breath as her mother stopped before them, her eyes wandering to their holding hands and then back up to Addison and then lower back to their necks. "Bizzy." She greeted her.

"Addison."

And then there were 30! Geez this was tough and I apologize for the delay. I had way too many ideas in my head for some other fics and I kept on editing this one. Again I'm sorry it's late and it also has a filler chapter vibe to it. Anyway I hope you enjoy. Let me know what you think. Yeah? Until next week. ;)
