chapter 5 : His first Flight

Next day he woke up with a groan. He has not only two subjects which he not interested that day – Herbology and Astronomy but also has flying lessons. From what he heard the teachers of these subjects are friendly and impartial so he didn't think there will be any problem. Professor sprout is Hufflepuff as it gets. Though he didn't like the to take care of these plants, he interested in properties of these plants and how to use them properly in potion so he can't ignore the subject like History.

He went to great hall for breakfast after his morning rituals. Charms with claws is the first period then Herbology with puffs , DADA with claws, flying lessons with gryffs and at the night Astronomy with gryffs . Professor Flitwick taught them the theory and wand movements of fire making charm with incantation as

"Incendio".

Harry along with Daphne, Tracy and Blaise went to Greenhouse 3 where the class is arranged. Once everyone arrived professor Sprout said "let's get all of you pair up" and she took a scroll and began to read it aloud

Daphne Greengrass and Susan Bones

Hannah Abbot and Blaise Zabini

Tracey Davis and Justin Finch-Fletchley

Theodore Nott and Pansy Parkinson

Harry Potter an Neville Longbottom

Earnest MacMillan and Draco Malfoy

Vincent Crabbe and Millicent Bulstrode

Gregory Goyle and Wayne Hopkins

These are the people you'd be working with this class for this year.

Now, today we're going to be working with a plant that is from the Alcea genus called the Whingingspoot. It is closely related to the Alcea rosea, better known as the common Hollyhock, and could easily be mistaken by appearance alone. However, instead of having seeds within the fruit at the centre of each flower like hollyhocks, there is a small disk of rounded pods with seeds inside. We'll be removing the sweet smelling pods from our Whingingspoots today. These pods will be placed in a tray under our synthetic lights over there," the elderly witch said as she indicated a table of hanging lights that had been enchanted to work. "We'll leave them under the lights until they're nice and dry. Then it'll be up to each of you to grind the pods into a fine powder. Does anyone know what that powder is called, or what it is used for?"

Harry's eyes darted to his companion who sat silently with his hands on top of the table. He watched his eyes brighten with the knowledge that he knew the answers. He didn't raise his hand. Instead, he turned his attention to picking at cuticles of plant.

Professor Sprout gave a disappointed sigh. "It's called dried spootling. Both potioneers and medical practitioners work with this ground up pod because it can be used in an assortment of behavioural enhancing potions. For example, if someone is suffering from depression, these pods can be added to a number of potions that will cheer them right up."

"Professor, why wouldn't someone just use the cheering charm?" A petite red-headed Susan Bones asked meekly from where she sat beside a slender blonde.

"That's a very good question, Miss Bones" Professor Sprout said with a brilliant smile. She was, apparently, thrilled by the fact that someone was showing a bit of interest in the lesson.

"A cheering charm will only affect someone for a short period of time. Whereas a potion brewed with dried spootling will last for a much longer duration. If you think about it, brewing a potion that can be stored in large quantities is a much wiser way of dealing with the dreary moods than having to cast a cheering charm every a few minutes. Now, are there any other questions before I explain how to extract the pods from our Whingingspoots?"

When none of the students raised their hands, she continued on. "Alright, now remember that these little plants are very sensitive. They get easily offended if someone approaches them with a negative presence. They're also intelligent enough to interpret the tone you're speaking in, and they can understand most words you say. So, make sure you don't say anything inappropriate. If you offend them, the large colourful blooms will close all the way down the stalk. If that happens, the head flower at the top will start spitting tiny black pebbles at you to show its displeasure.

Remember, think positive and be cheerful. Once you've won over your plant, you will be able to open the petals of the beautiful flowers. Inside you'll see small the brown pods at the very centre that I mentioned before. Just take the back of your knives and scrap the pods gently away to place them in the little dishes on your tables."

With a wave of her wand she sent trays of Whingingspoots whooshing around the room until one sat before each student. "Once you've cleared all of the pods out of the blooms, please place the dishes on the table under the light and then you're free to go. Over the weekend, I would like you to write at least an eight inch summary about the plants we're working with today. Please begin."

He and Neville got a nice thick, bright green stalk with proud bulbous pink flowers while the boy next to Neville who happened to be Draco Malfoy got was thinner than most of the others around the room, and the pale purple blooms weren't quite as large either. As a matter of fact, the stringy plant looked as if it had one foot in the grave.

Harry looked over to Neville to see what he is doing. Neville petted on the flower and said "you are a beautiful flower, aren't you? You are one of the prettiest flower I ever seen" And Harry saw the flower leaned for his touch like women yearning for touch.

"Wow... Longbottom I didn't know you had it in you, if you don't mind can you help me with this one and you seemed like a prodigy to me in Herbology." Harry asked

"I can h-help" Neville stammered with a blink. No one praised him for anything. But Today Harry Potter the boy-who-lived, the prodigy in transfiguration and potion asked for his help and called him prodigy.

"Loosen up a little, I'm not going to eat you" harry snarked

After they cleared all of the pods out of the blooms respectively, they placed the dishes on the table under the light.

" thank you for the help today. I think maybe we can study together in library sometime as I can improve your other subjects you can teach me about Herbology Longbottom, I personally think you are quite good with plants and they seemed to love you" harry asked with a smile

"Please call me N-Neville" he stammered though he returned with a small smile.

"Then you can Call me Harry too" harry stated but mentally frowned when he heard him stammering. It looked like Neville had self-confidence issues. Of course, Harry had those too, he just didn't show it. Even after all the years, Dursleys are the chapter in his life he can't close.

That's when he heard Malfoy say

"Sweet Salazar, MacMillan!" Draco blurt out with indignation. "It's just a ruddy plant. I don't think saying I love y—"

"Malfoy, I should warn you..." MacMillan started to say. But it was too late. The pink flower at the top of her plant closed its petals tightly, and then turned towards Draco. Without warning, the flower began spitting tiny pebbles at the pale-haired boy with such ferocity that it took them both by surprise. The next thing Draco knew his face was being pelted by a stinging onslaught of minute-sized stones. He tried to cover his face with his hands to stop the biting pain, but not before one of the rocks struck him right in the eye.

Draco cursed as he turned away and clapped a hand over his aching eye. The plant continued to shoot pebbles at the back of his head, showing no signs of stopping, until his anger got the best of him. With more force than he intended he snapped, "Make it stop, MacMillan!"

"I can't," he protested with a hint alarm. " I think If you want it to stop, you'll have to apologize."

"You want me to say sorry to a stupid plant?" He tossed an angry look over his shoulder. Surely he was just trying to make him look like a fool in front of everyone else. "I don't think so."

"Then it's not going to stop. You've offended it. If you don't believe me, just ask Professor Sprout." he sat with his arms crossed over his chest as he spoke.

He had forgotten about Professor Sprout, who was at the front of the class helping Bones with something. Clearing his throat, he called out, "Professor! MacMillan's plant is attacking me! Get him to make it stop!"

Sprout turned to hurry toward them with a worried expression. "What have you done, Mister Malfoy?"

"I—I don't know wh—" Draco began. But he was immediately cut off by MacMillan.

"He insulted my Whingingspoot, Professor."

"Oh, Mister Malfoy, didn't I advise you against offending them? Now you'll have to apologize and hope it forgives you. If it doesn't, you'll just have to leave. Quite frankly, it would be more of a disturbance having you here. Even with a shielding spell, it would continue its assault on you." Professor Sprout clasped her hands in front of her. She gave him a stern look and waited for him to do as he was told.

Scowling, he turned back to the plant and muttered, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean tooffendyou."

For a second, it seemed as if it had worked because the plant stopped its barrage on him. It seemed to consider his words for a few long minutes. But then it shook viciously and began spitting pebbles once more. Draco growled his frustration, grabbing his book bag to shield himself with. He sent a look at the professor who said, "Mister Malfoy, you'll need to make asincereapology."

He rolled his eyes, hoping that the plant could actuallyseethe action. "I'm very sorry for offending you. It was...careless of me to say that you were a ruddy plant. I apologize for upsetting you."

Though the apology was sincere enough, the Whingingspoot seemed to hold a grudge against him. It sent an endless bombardment of pebbles at him until Professor Sprout announced, "You'd better leave, Mister Malfoy. But don't be too pleased with yourself for getting out of class early. You've lost Slytherin house twenty points for not listening to my instructions."

"But Professor," Draco exclaimed with outrage. "It wasn't my—"

"Wasn't your fault?" the plump witch interrupted with a lifted brow. "That's utter poppycock. No, I suggest you leave before I decide to take more points away from you."

Draco glowered at her for a moment. Professor Sprout was always such a kindly old witch. It seemed strange that she would get so angry about something he hadn't meant to happen. He slung his book bag over his shoulder, nodded his head, and then turned to leave the greenhouse.

The other Slytherins including harry were giving him resentful sneers for having lost them so many house points.

When Malfoy entered Great hall for lunch he noticed some Gryffindors like weasley are openly laughing at him at the incident of Greenhouse. He'd been viciously attacked by a plant, been forced to apologize to the stupid thing, had twenty points taken from his house, and been kicked out of class after being scolded by one of the nicest professors they had. Of course the annoying tossers would find it funny. He got red with embarrassment and anger when few Slytherins also started laughing but covered it with cough

After DADA with claws harry along with other Slytherin first years went to the courtyard for flying lessons.

"I can't believe this" Harry muttered. "Are theytryingto start fights all the time? Why do they force the houses that hate each other into group activities?"

"Inter-house unity?" Nott suggested with a perfectly straight face.

"We've already demonstrated that," Blaise said

The first years lined up next to the brooms on the ground, shuffling around for the best brooms. Malfoy was talking, as usual, complaining to Parkinson and the beefcakes that the school brooms wereterribleand hisfather, who was aschool governor, would behearing about this—

The utter nonsense.

Harry eyed the broom next to his feet. He had to admit, reluctantly, that Malfoy had a point.

He never rode a broom. He liked his foot firmly on the ground so he didn't actually care about flying broom. But he is intrigued to find if there is anyway to fly without a broom. He knew this flying is only a show. Purebloods who learned how to fly will show off in front of muggleborn and subconsciously make muggleborns inferior.

Soon the Gryffindor's arrived and stood opposite them, Ron stood opposite Harry and glared at him and the other Slytherins, Harry once more found himself wondering just how wise it was to constantly pair Slytherins with Gryffindor's, though he supposed it would have been better if not for idiots like Weasley.

Eventually Madam Hooch arrived, she was an odd looking woman as she had short and spiky grey hair along with yellow eyes that looked like they belonged to a hawk.

"Good afternoon everyone," Madam Hooch began. "welcome to your first flying class. I should warn you that, much like Professor McGonagall and Professor Snape, I do not tolerate messing around in my class. Flying is like walking, just much higher and far more dangerous, there will be no fooling around here. Now let's begin, you're all standing by your brooms, that's good. Now raise your right hand over your broom and say UP.

"What's the matter, slimy Potter?" Weasley said. "Scared you'll fall into the ground while flying ?"

Harry just faced Weasley, held out his hand, and said "Up" as mildly as he could manage with how angry he was. The broom leaped eagerly off the ground and slammed into his palm.

"You were saying, Weasley?" he said.

Weasley looked startled. Then outraged.

"Look at the way his ears turn red when he's mad," Blaise said with the air of someone examining an unusual type of insect. Few Slytherins chuckled at this.

Harry was surprised when his broom quickly shot into his arm, he looked at the others and saw that not many had the same reaction as some of their brooms were still on the floor, a few were rolling around and some had gone partly up before falling back down. At the second try, Daphne and Draco were able to get their brooms up, followed shortly by Blaise and Nott. However Weasley 's broom rolling around the ground reluctant to get in the hands of Weasley.

"I think it don't like you that much" Daphne commented to Weasley.

"With feeling." Madam Hooch said as the rest of the class still had difficulties. Eventually everyone was able to get their brooms into their hands, even Hermione who had accidentally hit himself in the face with her broom when it went up. "Very good, now I want you all to mount your broom." She ordered, everyone did so, Madam Hooch walked between the students, correcting and inspecting how the students mounted their brooms.

"I've been holding it like this for years!" Draco protested when Hooch began correcting him.

"Then you've been doing it wrong for years." She shrugged before walking off. Ron Weasley, along with the Irish Gryffindor Seamus Finnegan and the black skinned Gryffindor boy Dean Thomas, snickered at that. "Alright," She said once she was satisfied. "I will start you all off with simply hovering, on the count of three you will all kick off and raise yourselves a few feet off the ground. Only a few feet, now get ready.

They started flying. After a while of flying harry realized he liked and comfortable with flying brooms. He liked the rush of air passing through him as he flew. Flying gave him a sensation he thought he never had. He forget about his past, problems, anything his mind seemed gone blank and restarted. All he wanted to ride through air as fast as he can. He don't know how to express the emotion seeing everything that was beneath him as smaller than he need to worry about it.

After few moments of composing himself he stopped in mid air and observed everyone. He saw Tracy and Daphne going in a mid level speed along with Nott and Blaise. He snorted when he saw Granger flying the broom, she was not only flying at low level and slow but also she acting like she was riding a dragon. Just as he diverted his attention to Malfoy, Weasley and Malfoy appeared to be having some hissing argument. ignoring the protest coming from Teacher.

Blaise and Nott stepped in to defuse things between Parkinson and Parvati Patil before words turned to curses, and when Granger shouted something about getting in trouble, he spun around and saw, ofallthe things, Weasley and Malfoy started racing real hard on brooms.

Harry squinted, and saw Malfoy chuck something into the air. Weasley'swand. How onearth had he gotten hold of that?

Weasley of course, sped after the wand, while Malfoy shot back to the ground and stepped off his broom. Wand went for ground, Weasley who happened to think he is exceptional flier went after it while pushing the limit of broom. Just as he crashed to the ground he regained his wits and decided to pull up. Harry who watching the chase with great interest in what going to happen. Suddenly he heard a scream he turned around only to see Tracy losing control of her broom. He flew fast as he can to rescue her from the broom.

Tracy, grab on!" Harry called, stretching a hand out towards her.

"I can't!" She screamed, her hands were gripping the broom so hard that her knuckles were turning white.

"You can grab on to me or you can kiss the ground!" Harry yelled. "Choose!"

"Oh bloody hell!" Tracy screamed before she reached out a hand to grab onto Harry's, when doing so the broom bucked up and Tracy fell off it. She fell to the ground, screaming all the way. Harry quickly went into a dive after her, once he got close enough he grabbed her hand with one hand, keeping the other on the broom. Harry increased his speed so he could go slightly past her, he pulled her so she was behind him, Tracy landed on the broom and once Harry let go of her arm she quickly wrapped both arms around him and screamed into the back of his shoulder.

Harry's focus was on the rapidly approaching ground, Harry instinctively pulled up, it was not an easy task due to not only how fast they were going but also because this was Harry's first time on a broom, a school broom at that, and he was doing it with extra weight that wouldn't stop screaming. Harry yelled out as he pulled up, the broom levelled out, the tips of Harry and Tracy's shoes brushed against the grass. Harry slowed down before he stopped and landed.

Harry pulled out the broom from his legs. He looked around for the teacher only to see she was helping the Weasley from the crash' from the looks of it he dislocated his shoulder, broken wrist and bruises on face. He almost pitied the red headed. He called teacher for medical attention. Just as teacher came Daphne landed on the ground and hugged Tracy. Tracy who was still in shock hugged Daphne tightly in return.

"Mr Potter, do you mind taking Miss Davis to hospital wing ? I have Mr weasley and 50 points to Slytherin for rescuing fellow student" Madam Hooch said.

"No problem professor and thank you" harry replied shrugged.

"I am coming too" Daphne demanded

They along with Hooch and weasley lying on the stretcher levitated by Madam Hooch. Eventually they arrived in hospital wing. Harry placed Tracy upon one of the beds, soon Madam Pomfrey came over.

"Hello Madam" Harry greeted her "Miss Davis has had an accident in flying class, she has quite a shock when she fall off the broom. And seeing she didn't crash to ground as weasley did I wouldn't worry about any physical damage"

Madam Pomfrey started waving her wand in different patterns and chant in Latin. After few minute she declared Tracey is fine apart from some mental trauma.

Tracy had to stay inside the hospital wing for the day but would be released in the evening, personally Harry thought that that was overkill with how easily magic could heal physical problems but wasn't going to argue with Madam Pomfrey. If Harry was going to die then he was going to make sure that it wasn't because he decided to argue with the matron of the hospital wing.

She then started waving wand over Weasley's body and Gave him some potion and skele gro for mending bones. "You are going to stay for next 3 days Mr Weasley you are in for a rough ride" Madam Pomfrey commented.

He spluttered out the skele gro potion and said "that potion has a vile taste"

"Yes Mr weasley it is skele gro it can be a vile taste" matron replied.

"Miss Greengrass please go to common room I had a business with Mr potter" Madam Hooch commented.

"how many years have you spent flying on a broom?" She asked.

"That was my first time." Harry answered honestly.

"Your first time?" She blinked, looking astounded by his words. "Really?"

"Yes." Harry nodded.

"Then we should go to your head of house" she suggested

"Okay" he replied uncomfortably. He know his head of house didn't like him. Whatever the reason he don't know.

One hour Later, Harry had arrived in the common room after talking with Madam Hooch and Professor Snape. He sat down next to Daphne who looked up from her transfiguration homework.

"Alright Daphne ?" He asked

"Fine" She said, "where were you?"

"Talking to Snape and Hooch about the flying lesson" Harry answered "he gave me twenty-five extra points for saving a student's life and Hooch told him to gave me a try out for Quidditch "

"What happened" she asked eagerly. It's not everyday a flying instructor will tell head of house to give a try out for a 1st year.

"Snape happened, he said Quidditch team is full there will be no tryout and he didn't want to show any favoritism towards a 1st year student so he have to wait until next year." He imitated Snape in dramatic voice.

"As if he is not biased towards slytherin" he muttered. Harry noticed the slight emotion shown in Snape when he gave points. He was pleased to give Slytherin points but displeased at giving points to him. He don't know what made Snape hate him.

He decided to stop sulking and go to Astronomy. When they arrived on Astronomy tower, they were treated with a smile from professor Sinistra which they returned. They waited for everyone to arrive.

"Let's talk about lunar phases again, shall we ? That was a rhetorical question

by the by my tower my rules Rule no 1 :No sleeping during class!" Professor commented in stern voice

After few minutes "Mr. Finnigan, you're supposed to be drawing a star chart, not taking a nap!" Professor Sinistra 's sharp yell jolted Seamus out of his sleep.

"Wha…? Sorry, Professor." Seamus turned back to his star chart, grumbling. Professor Sinistra frowned, and cast an amplifying charm in Ron's direction.

"Could be sleeping, don't know why we have to take this stupid class anyways…." Seamus stopped as he realized his voice was loud enough to be heard by everyone, and his cheeks turned a deep crimson.

"Would anyone care to answer that?" Professor Sinistra looked out over her class, and sighed as she spotted only one hand in the air. "Miss Granger?"

"Astronomy is one of the core subjects of Hogwarts, one of the subjects deemed important and necessary for all witches and wizards to learn about." Hermione answered, smiling.

"That is the definition of a core subject, yes, but I am asking if anyone knows why Astronomy is deemed a core subject." Professor Sinistra responded. Hermione Granger, she noted, looked almost offended.

'This is why the theory should start in first year, why we should take more time to properly explain the role each of these subjects plays in our lives."Professor Sinistra thought to herself. "Very well. I think perhaps that might be a better use of our time tonight. Everyone put your star charts away and circle up."

After her class had put their materials away and arranged themselves around her, she began to speak. "The core subjects are chosen because they are deemed important and necessary. At Hogwarts, the core subjects mandatory for the first five years of your time here are Charms, Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, Potions, History of Magic, and Astronomy. For most of the subjects, the reasons are obvious. Astronomy is one whose applications are not immediately apparent to the muggle-born and the young, but whose application should become obvious soon after you begin your time here."

The reason we study Astronomy is because it has subtle but important effects on a great deal of magic, potions in particular. In the past, these effects would have been discussed thoroughly during your Potions class, but it is my understanding that those details are no longer considered worthy of discussion during your class time."

She determinedly ignored the grumbles about Snape. As a Professor she could not join her students in complaining about that man, however justified those complaints might be.

"And in truth, we have the muggles to thank for many potions advancements. Muggles have a far greater understanding of the science of the planets than we do, and while they may not understand the full implications of the planetary movements, their ability to describe and predict them far outstrips our own." Hermione and a few others in the class perked up at that.

"The sun is, in truth, nothing more than a particularly close star, but it is so close that while it is visible, its energies outweigh all others. The sun can have many associations, and depending on how you wish to harness its energy, you might brew your potions at different times. Pepper-up potions, for instance, are generic and can be finished at any time during the day, to draw upon our tendency to be more active at day than we are at night. This also explains why some people react negatively to the standard Pepper-Up; there are those persons that are inclined to sleep during the day, and be awake at night. For them, the Pepper-Up potion's stimulating effects are diminished by the natural effects of their body's cycle, resulting in a very subdued effect at best, or becoming violently ill at worst.

"At night, however…." Professor Sinistra gestured at the sky "The moon is the largest influence we have, but the stars cast their own light upon everything we do, and if you know which ones cast the sort of influence you want, you can make your potions and spells much stronger. When I teach my older classes that the one of the moons of Jupiter is covered in ice, that's not mere trivia. That knowledge can be combined with knowing when Europa shines brightest in the sky to strengthen any potion that deals with cold or combating heat. Our strongest fever reducing potions are brewed under that moon's influence, along with many others."

She looked at the class, and was pleased to see fascinated, eager eyes gazing back at her. Except for Mr. Finnigan, who looked perilously close to falling asleep until Miss Granger elbowed him again.

"Many plants grow differently under the stars depending on when you plant and harvest them. Even certain spells can be strengthened or diminished by the light of the stars. And as with so much of magic, the more you know, the stronger the effect is. A potion brewed underneath Europa will have an icy influence, but if you know that fact and consciously make use of it, the effect will be even stronger.

"Intent, my students, drives all magic. The more you know, the more you can recognize and harness these subtle influences, and the better you'll do, no matter what magic you're working with.

"And that, I think, will do for tonight. Be ready to start fresh star charts next week, and we'll talk about what influences those stars might cast over your work.

Harry went straight to bed happily. He not only made friend with Neville longbottom who is heir of longbottom and his god brother but also he enjoyed flying. He planned to go for a fly when he need some frustration to blow off. The Herbology and Astronomy professor made the subject easy. All in all he started to like Hogwarts.
