Acceptance
Lydia's bravery and instincts saved my life that day. Thinking back on her actions, my heart still hurts for her. She had suffered a vast deal from the man directly and her actions would follow her for the rest of her life. She like many before her had been affected by the man, luckily, he could hurt no more.
As time passed, the pain turned to memory. Some endured more trauma from the experience as their loved ones were lost. Memorials were held and in time, the hospital regained its footing. Security increased significantly which made mornings all the longer. Our patients were affected that day, some chose to go elsewhere for their care, but many remained. Some healthcare workers too either left the profession, matched with a different hospital, or took extended leaves of absence to accept what occurred on that day.
Lizzy and I saw a psychologist who helped us both work through the problems which faced us. We worked towards accepting that sometimes there is nothing you can do in a situation. At first, I spent many hours tossing and turning at night thinking of what-ifs, but I've learned to give each their time and let them pass on in my brain.
Lizzy feared that the stress of the situation would cause a miscarriage, but luckily it did not. Eventually, after a long pregnancy, Lizzy and I welcomed Lydia Anne Darcy to the world. She was named after the person by which she was able to survive as well as both of her parents. Lydia became an "Aunt" to our Lyddie. "Big Lydia" loved her namesake more than anything and was as constant in our lives as a scalpel.
As the years passed, we have looked back on that day and looked at all that has come from it, while there was a great deal of grief which was only natural, over time we learned to move past it, and we now take each day one at a time. With this knowledge, we eventually started to see the light of hope in our lives once more. And we let the past remain in the past. Together, we look to the past only as its remembrance brings pleasure. We cannot control the actions of others, only our own, and pray they will be enough.
Author's Note: And that's a wrap on my third completed work! I know this one was pretty dark and depressing, if you have any questions, like always feel free to ask and I will get to those that I see. I would love to hear about how you felt reading this short story. I have a lot of other projects in the works...including William Darcy as a swimmer, Lizzy as an heiress and I'm even considering not entirely a gender-swap, but rather a life situation swap...Until next time, be kind, smile and have a great day y'all.
