Chapter 1: A New Dawn A Monster Unsealed
A white light encompasses my vision; it clings onto the silhouette of my body that I barely make out in my stupor. What is this feeling? Why is there a sinking feeling inside my stomach that foretells despair unknown to me? The seconds blur together, making them like an endless eternity with no signs that anything would change any time soon.
After a discernible amount of time passes, the light gives way to a bleak, dreary, and dark space that could be mistaken as purgatory. It was an endless box of darkness that spanned an inconceivable distance: if there was an end, it would have been impossible to tell. Pondering inside my mind, I desperately tried to comprehend my arrival inside this limbo world with no life or light in sight.
The memories all started coming back to me, flowing like a raging river that threatened to consume me.My life was nothing to write home about; it was an unremarkable tale of an individual who was just like all the other mass-produced nobodies in the world. There were no distinguishing traits that really set me apart from others. Every day I woke up, ate, went to school, studied, came back home, and repeated it all again like a monotonous machine. My grades were good, but so what; they were nothing in the face of experience, merely decorations or ornaments meant to keep up the appearance of excellence.
Thinking back to it, I was the type of person to lord over others with these false accomplishments as a means to stroke my own ego. What for though a life of monotony where I would repeat my current mundane cycle just to make a living? I never found a reason or goal to dedicate myself to. Life passed me by, and I allowed it. My actions were so insignificant that it would be possible to consider myself a side character within even my own life. I peaked and stagnated because without drive, what reason was there to try; what a meaningless life.
But suddenly, vivid colors penetrate into my eyes and explode, giving life to the barren and colorless surroundings. A multitude of colors makes way red, yellow, blue, and many more that required deeper analysis to be viewed captivated my gaze. As my attention pans to the scenery, a whisper echoes in my ear.
The voice softly whispers, "Live strong, live happily, live with no regrets."
"Wait, who are you?", I said. I was curious to know the identity of the miscellaneous voice. It spoke with a fondness and warmth in its tone reminiscent of how one talks to family. But before I could be given an answer, particles of black and white began to cloud my vision. My head started to pound, and pain flooded my being.
It felt like every atom of my body was being super pressurized. The pressure was reducing my organs into mush as my heart was forced to work overtime to pump blood throughout my body. Sweat cascaded off like small streams as my core body temperature rapidly increased in increments. A small trickle of blood slowly dripped down my nose and eyes at a constant pace. I started seizing up and convulsing in agony as the last vestiges of my consciousness finally broke down.
When I woke up, I found no vestiges of dried blood on my upper lip. "Was everything merely a dream, the hallucinations of a mad man driven insane by his inadequacy to become one of the chosen?", I said out loud. Before I could ponder my potential insanity further, I look at my surroundings. "Is this a cave?" I said in confusion.
"How the hell did I get inside a cave, and why is it scorching?" I screamed. The air lacked much airflow, and the cave was very damp. You could feel the humidity already starting to cause your body to generate sweat. "I need to get out of here: if I stay too long, I'm liable to die of heatstroke or dehydration." I grimaced. The unevenness of the ground surprised me as I fell when I took my first few steps. "Ow that hurt", I said rubbing my backside.
My eyes dilated in terror at what was directly in front of me. A pit of flowing magma, moving at such a slow pace, it appeared to stagnate. If I had walked forward even 5 seconds more, I would have enjoyed a fiery death at the pit's hands. My body wouldn't sink, so it would have been a slow and painful death hoping for my nerves to be burnt out to numb the pain.
"Ok, this is not a normal cave; I can't afford to be careless," I said in shock of the near-death experience. Slowly, my body began trudging along the uneven surface of the cave as I desperately tried to find an exit. I walked and walked until my muscles ached and sweat poured from every orifice of my body even, my hair was caked in sweat. My legs gave out, which landed me on my knees. I gasped for air for 2 minutes but was unable to walk, so I crawled instead.
After what felt like hours, a white light shined, showing what looked like an exit to me. In excitement, I forgot my previous exhaustion and ran inside, happy that everything was ok now. When I entered the room, an open clearing entered my field of vision with stairs leading to a pedestal. I felt so betrayed all that hope now replaced with a trace of bitterness at the mocking sight. Although something stood out to me, the item on the pedestal seemed to be a circular rock. Maybe if the item was removed, it would reveal a hidden passage to the surface.
I knew that it was false hope that it may backfire terribly in my face, but what choice did I have at this point. My body was in no condition to wander around searching for exits, and time was running out. "You know what could honestly go more wrong; I'm already at risk of dying anyway?" I exclaimed. " I'm making the right choice.", I muttered softly in reassurance. Not like I'm breaking a seal or something. Slowly, I make my way up the worn stair path until the end nears. My hands grab the stone and remove it from the pedestal. Nothing happens. "Are you kidding me! that hunk of rock weighed a ton; are you telling me I lifted it for nothing! " I exclaimed with frustration!
Then an earth-shaking tremor came off the ground, making me slip and fall down the stairs to the bottom. Pillars of lava started gushing from behind the pedestal as small rock debris erupted with smoke following it. Something was gradually walking out with its appearance hidden in the smoke. Eventually, the creature's image came into complete view. "No, you're not real this is just a figment of my imagination." I raved on in fear.
This couldn't be real, can't be real, mustn't be real! But it was, and there was no denying the reality of the situation. The monster was quadrupedal with a reddish-brown body with occasional grey spots and iron bangles attached to clawed feet in the shape of crosses. The monster's amber eyes on top of an iron-like helmet head smoldering in anger at my image as the heat inside the room intensified. I lay there paralyzed in fear. My blood turned cold, and my face turned white, lacking any blood as if I had already died.
"What is that thing?" I say in hysteria. What kind of animal is this? I feel a strange familiarity with the beast that I can't quite put my nose on, but I fail to figure out why. Is it possible that I could have seen this thing before in my previous life? No, that's impossible nothing like this could ever exist back home. Is it the product of genetic experiments or perhaps a horribly mutated beast? That still doesn't make much sense either: for the composition of features, it possesses it's impossible to deduce what it originally was.
Could it be that perhaps I'm not on earth anymore- the beast bellows in rage at my intrusion and builds up for an attack. A blast of red-hot flames approaches my figure, but a spike of adrenaline fills my body, allowing me to duck and roll over the attack just in time. I look at my previous location to be met, with slag of superheated molten rock in a circular shape. "That was close; I would have been a gon-" before I could finish, another stream of red-hot flames fires at my position.
I lunge away and tumble on the ground before time around me appears to slow down, with everything seeming to move in slow-motion. My mind starts to accelerate, trying to think of anything that could get me out of the situation. "Anything something, please give me something.", I brood in hysteria. I try to think of a plan viable enough to save me from the current situation. Sadly, my emotions are screaming out in overabundance and impairing my ability to think logically. Time starts to speed up, so I quickly decide to avoid over-committing to any movements while also remaining light on my feet.
I cemented on avoiding over-committing on any actions while also staying light on my feet since I know nothing about the strange creature. Maybe if I put the rock back, it will disappear. Time completely goes back to normal as I lament my inability to analyze the monster and create a thought-out plan.
Can I really do this? One mistake, and it's all over. Thoughts of a fiery death and remnants of a pile of ash fill my head. What am I thinking; there's no way I can do this: it may be better to give up now. After all, I'm just a random kid; I was nothing before coming here, and I still am. I don't even know what my enemy is. The tension in my muscles starts to fade away as the fight leaves my system until a memory resonates in my head.
'Live strong, live happily, and live with no regrets.' "No, I am not quitting this time.", I screamed passionately. "This is my start line: my ground zero, and I didn't survive this long just to die to an oversized molten Dino." It doesn't come off too strong because my legs shake rhythmically, showing a disconnect between my mind and body.
The creature, unamused by my war cry, smashes all four legs on the summit of the stairs, and an earthen glow appears under me. My body clenches in exertion once more as adrenaline fills my system, but something feels different. Unknown energy flows inside every part of my body, strengthening my blood flow, bones, and muscles. That voice did something weird to my body, but I should thank them for this small mercy, at least.
My body bustles with energy and blurs, taking a huge stride that crosses 1/5 of the distance between us. I don't even look behind to examine the damage from the attack only thought of my mind being the rock. The Dino refuses to make it an easy process and gathers energy creating four boulders packed with so much energy they shine with a silverish tint. The Dino launches the first but keeps the others in suspension for further attacks.
I cartwheel to the side, making sure to be on point to avoid falling. Although I evaded the attack, the shockwave blew me off course. Before I fall off the stairs, I flow more of the unknown power through my legs, smashing my legs on the stairs. The stomp firmly plants my feet down and kills the kinetic energy that threatened to push me off.
The monster surprised that I managed to hang on, loses control of one of the boulders, which dissipates out of existence. It quickly regains control and launches the remaining boulders in a pincer formation, forcing me to dash forward, but the monster planned for this. It was slowly building fire energy directly after firing its attack for a follow-up. The temperature in the room rapidly increases as a flame aura bursts to life, and the creature ejects a pillar of flames that expands outward.
At the moment of the ejection, the reddish Dino puts on a mocking smirk. This flaming bucket of turd; I won't allow this. I pivot backward and do a quick handspring accompanied by a backflip. Throughout the process, I agonized, knowing that I had never performed those motions in my life. I managed to avoid most of the blast as the monster underestimated me, but it clipped both my hands and legs.
I fall on my back in excruciating pain in a fetal position, housing what appeared to be 2nd-degree burns. I scream in agony, mimicking the sound of a dying animal while rocking back and forth. I wasn't a soldier or even someone who performed a job outside, so I lacked a high pain threshold. I struggled to try to put pressure on my limbs to continue onwards, but the adrenaline in my system wasn't enough.
Any pressure brought me into a world of pain. The layers of flesh in my affected limbs had nerves that kept firing pain signals endlessly. Fatigue started setting in, and most of the energy left my body, taking any adrenaline with it.
I continued screaming with a voice that reverberated throughout the chamber, realizing that my lack of knowledge on the energy had led to my legs' bones breaking during the falling episode. Only the adrenaline in my system had staved off the pain, but now it hit completely. My body curled further into itself as I screamed, my throat raw as my enemy watched in morbid fascination.
My breath started to labor as it began to slowly approach my prone body with every step it takes causing minor clanging noises. Energy starts pouring into its metal jaw. The Dino's jaws take on a blackish tint and jut out as they sharpen, taking on a more menacing look. So, this is how it all ends, dying at the hands of a hostile creature on my first day in this world.
The beast continues forward, every step seeming to be in slow motion. I can feel the dull beat of my heart and the flow of blood in my body. Although my body is totaled, the mystery energy flares giving me just enough to prevent a blackout but not enough to dull the pain. Every moment I can feel everything, the blisters, and burns in the multiple layers of skin on my legs and arms, and the shattered bones in my legs.
On the outside, my body is still screaming in pain. My body is starting to dissociate to numb the pain, but that won't stop the looming threat. "I don't wanna die.", I desperately pleaded. "No, I don't wanna die.", I mumble out louder than before. "Someone, please save me.", I utter with vulnerability, throwing away my pride.
When the figure is only a foot away, I squirm on the ground in terror, with tears leaking from my eyes. The beast looks at me with pity in its eyes and prepares to finish me off. I feel an emotional connection forming with it. The creature pauses motionless. What are these emotions: pity, anger, and irritation? Unfortunately, the monster seems to have caught on to the connection and severed it, resolving to finish me before the phenomenon repeats.
A weird name enters my head as I look at its clear image. "Heatran," I say in a dumb stupor, not understanding the significance of the name. The now identified Heatran lunges-"Pichu use thunderbolt.", a frantic voice calls out. Lightning hits Heatran causing it to momentarily seize up and spasm, allowing a flying avian to grasp me in its talons Another name screams out to me. Staraptor, but like the other, the context eludes me.
The Staraptor places me next to another person. The person looked like a young male youth. They were wearing a blue shirt with a V-shaped splash of blue accompanied by a red vest, blue shorts held up with a red belt, and a yellow scarf wrapped around their neck. They had brown hair with gloves and shoes with a red, white, and blue color scheme, but that's not what stood out. They have a weird watch thingy wait- "Is that a stylist?" I said with a hoarse voice. I gripe my head in pain as a migraine hits me.
What's a stylist; why do I know the name, and why does it feel familiar like the other terms? "What's happening to me?" I whisper in self-depreciation. Before I could sulk further, the voice answers my question.
"Yes, it is.", said the what appeared to be male youth. "That's not important though, just hang back." "You're gonna make it out of this if I have anything to say about this.", he said. "My name is Ben; I will finish this quickly, and I will get you medical attention as soon as possible. Pichu distract Heatran with your ukulele: I need you to buy me some time."
Staraptor ascends with extreme speed upward, causing an updraft while Pichu- "it's releasing electric musical notes." Each attack is targeted on the iron bangles because of the increased conductivity compared to other areas on Heatran. Heatran roars in anger and attempts to fire a flamethrower attack, but Staraptor divebombs Heatran leaving a trail of shining white behind.
The attack slightly moves Heatrans's head to the right causing the flamethrower to miss Pichu by a couple of centimeters. Staraptor ascends upward in V-shape and continues divebombing Heatran in succession: however, Heatran, now prepared, doesn't flinch against the unrelenting barrage. Heatran uses the boulder attack once more, aiming in the sky for Staraptor and behind itself to hit Pichu.
Ben calls out, "Staraptor evasive maneuver 1 into steel wing to deflect the ancient power." Staraptor barrel rolls downward to avoid the first rock flies to the right and then spins moving into steel wing deflecting the second rock approaching it into the third ancient powered rock. Ben then yells out, "Pichu spring, on your tail, then push off and deflect the attack with an iron tail. Aim for its face."
Pichu springs on its tail and pushes off, exerting more physical power than would be possible with its stubby legs due to its developed tail muscles. The ancient power is deflected back with double the force it was launched: and detonates causing a mini explosion. As a smokescreen forms, Ben fires his charged stylist that emits rainbow energy and begins looping around the smoke with it. My vision starts fading. It seems like the energy has run out, and that's the last thought I have as everything goes black.
When I wake up, I notice the smell of sterilized antiseptics and the heart monitor next to me. I'm in a hospital bed with a medical gauze on my limbs and my legs raised upward due to their broken nature. I hold my head in pain, trying to remember what happened. "I was in a cave. The names of the creatures I saw ring once more in my head Pichu, Staraptor, and Heatran.
Although my head aches in pain, I push forward this time instead of giving in to the pain. The cogs in my head start spinning, and all the clues finally become clear to me." Pokémon," they are Pokémon, I said in disbelief. Wait that, could only mean that this world is the Pokémon world. It all makes sense now. The cave, the rock, and the elemental attacks are all telltale signs of the world's identity. My previous location must have been the cavern clearing in Stark mountain. This can only mean that oversized rock was the magma stone.
"What have I done?" I cry, placing my head on my chest. Because of me, Heatran is now free to rampage through the area and ecosystem. How many lives have been lost due to my negligence? The guilt begins to weigh on my mind as I realize the gravity of what my actions have wrought. The guilt is a deep underwater trench exerting pressure on my body with a force of 15,750 psi. "It's all my fault." I cry tears, dripping tears down my face.
I wail and blubber apologies to any potential victims of my actions for what felt like ten minutes until I looked at my surroundings more closely. How did I get here?" I said out loud with a face full of dried tears. I see a shadowy figure whose image becomes gradually clearer.
"We are currently in Veilstone city.", the figure says. "You were in bad condition, but I rushed to the best hospital I could. The area we were in is pretty remote, and the doctors there weren't equipped to do the job. I'm just happy we made it in time."
"Ben, is that you? Wait, what happened in the cave. What about Heatran? Is it still rampaging?" I fired simultaneously hoping, to assuage the guilt in my heart.
"Of course, I stopped Heatran. It's my job as a Pokémon ranger to protect Pokémon and the ecosystem of the area I'm assigned to. Anyway, all you need to know is"- Ben does a backflip and raises his hand with the stylist up into a fist as it flashes and says, "capture complete!"
"Thank god no one got hurt," I exclaim with happiness knowing, that no one suffered for my mistakes. "Thank you, Ben, for everything."
"It's no problem; I'm glad to help. Don't be no hard on yourself; you had no way of knowing what would have happened. Information about Heatran is guarded very vigorously. Although I don't know how you got inside in the first place due to the place being restricted to the public, I do know that you are not a nefarious person seeking the power of a legendary Pokémon."
"A villain would never cry over the suffering of his sacrifices for power.", Ben says with a good-natured smile on his face. Regardless, the doctors suggested that you avoid any strenuous activity; they managed to heal your life-threatening injuries, but you are not completely cured. A Chansey will come later in the afternoon to heal your remaining wounds, so you are going to feel tired."
With my heart much lighter, I focus on myself now. "Can you at least hand me a mirror, dude?" a smile mirroring the one on Ben's face.
"Sure, knock yourself out, man. I will see you tomorrow to explain everything, try not to get into any more trouble before then." He hands me the mirror and leaves the room.
"Jerk, not like I asked for those things to happen," I say without any heat behind the statement. "Man, I really have to thank him for everything. I still can't believe this is real; I'm in the Pokémon world and was saved by a Pokémon ranger." Whatever, I am just going to take a look at my appearance and then doze off. I look at myself in the mirror to see a stranger. "Who is that?" I say in confusion while rubbing my head. "Wait, is that me?"
Our hero has survived his first encounter in this new world. What happened in the cave? What was that mystery energy? Why is he surprised at his own reflection? The curtain has set on our protagonist next time on Pokémon Daybreak Dawn.
AN: Hi guys, VirtuousContract-King here. This is the first fanfic I have ever written. I'm personally just writing for fun. Regardless, I hope you guys liked it. I am open to criticism as a writer; it helps with improvement, but I'm not trying to deal with flamers. Anyway, see you guys next time :)
