Chapter 9
Matters Of The Heart
O0o0o0o0o0o0o0
Jareth gazed down at the beautiful brunette as she lay unconscious in her bed. She was extremely pale and every so often she would shiver, her teeth chattering; That worried him.
Aiden approached him, gently placing a hand on his shoulder causing him to tense slightly. Aiden cleared his throat, "She'll be fine, Your Majesty..." Aiden told him softly, trying to ease his fears.
Jareth gazed back at Sarah again, his heart constricting painfully in his chest. "How can you be certain?" He whispered. "The power from the Labyrinth has drained her dangerously. She has a high fever..."
"Which could have easily been caused by the rain, sire. Try not to worry." He said, his voice gentle.
Jareth turned to face his friend, shaking his head. "I will not leave her."
Aiden furrowed his brow, confused by his King.
The door opened and Lilium walked in. she sighed sadly when she saw Sarah. she looked extremely pale even by fae standards.
She glanced at Jareth, who was standing at the end of Sarahs' bed, his hands resting against the carved wood.
She approached him, gently placing her hand on his back. "Sire, I just came to ask you if you'd like me to help you in any way at all?"
Jareth's eyes didn't leave Sarah's form even as he replied to the woman at his side. "No, thank you, Lily. But I appreciate your offer."
Lilium watched as Jareth continued to gaze at Sarah and he swallowed hard. He looked sick with worry. it wasn't like him to react like this to anything let alone a mortal girl. And a servant nonetheless.
"Sire, for what it's worth, I do believe all will be well... the girl is strong. You'll still be able to gain her power back."
Jareth said nothing.
Aiden gently placed a hand on Lily's back, guiding her away from Jareth. He leaned in close, whispering in her ear. "Give him time. He's in shock."
Lilium nodded, trying to be understanding. "I'll give him some space... If you need me?"
"I'll call." He gave her a gentle smile before he gently shut the door.
Aiden sighed when he turned his attention back to Jareth, watching as he leans over to touch Sarah's forehead for the fifth time in ten minutes.
"She's still very warm." He whispered, a concerned look spreading across his face. "Can you ask Patty to bring a bowl of cold water and a cloth?"
Aiden nodded."Yes, sire. Of course." He turned and left the room, calling for Patty.
As soon as Jareth heard the door click shut, he let out a shaky sigh, running his fingers through his hair.
"You turn my world upside down, Sarah..."
He turned away from her and began pacing the room, his hands locked behind his back.
"You are completely foolish, do you realize that?" He said as he glanced back at her. She was so still, it was almost disturbing to see her laying that still.
"You're so fixed on disobeying me, aren't you? Even when we're friends you still challenge me!"
Still, she lay there, unmoving.
Jareth swallowed hard as he approached the bed once more. "If you were awake now you'd shout at me... you'd call me something horrible and storm out the room..."
He found himself pulling a chair beside her bed, sitting down on it. He gazed at her for a few moments before he leaned closer again, gently lifting her limp hand up in his.
"God damn it, woman, you better wake up... You're the Labyrinth's Champion... do not be defeated by it." He gently lifted her hand to his lips, pressing a soft kiss against her skin. "Don't make me have to come and get you, because I will. I will get you from anywhere, and I'll carry you back kicking and screaming if I have too..."
Jareth heard the door open and gently put her hand down again before he stood, turning to see Aiden and Patty enter with a bowl of water and a flannel.
"Sire, 'ear ya go," Patty said as she placed the bowl onto Sarah's bedside table. "Go'n rest, sire, I'll take care of her."
Jareth hesitated but Aiden placed a hand on his back. "Patty can take much better care of her alone, My Lord. You can come back and check on her but come and have a drink first. You look like you need one."
Jareth didn't say a word as Aiden escorted him out of the room, but he found himself turning back to get one last look at Sarah before the door shut behind him.
Aiden poured Jareth a large goblet of mead and pressed it into his gloved hand. "Drink..."
Jareth was sat on his window sill, watching as the rain trickled down the glass of the window. He hadn't said a word for a few minutes and Aiden was beginning to grow concerned.
Jareth lifted the goblet to his lips and drank the contents in one large mouthful, enjoying the familiar burn.
"Sire... I wish to help you. Talk to me. You know I will not judge you based on anything you say."
Jareth passed him his goblet again, a signal for him to refill it for him once more.
Aiden sighed and took it from him. He approached the desk, picking up the glass bottle from the table and pulled the cork out. He poured the contents into his King's goblet.
"What do I do if she doesn't get through this Aiden?"
Aiden turned his attention back to Jareth, surprised by the melancholy way he was speaking.
"She will... she's strong."
"So is the energy of the Labyrinth. I don't know what happened out there but whatever it was has knocked her for six. Most fae even struggle to harness the energy of the Labyrinth and she's a mortal with no magic!"
Aiden approached him again, passing him his goblet again. "But you said so before yourself... Sarah's different. She managed to beat you and the Labyrinth when she was only a young girl... she stands more of a chance of survival then most would."
Jareth shakily took his goblet from his friend. "Can I stand that chance? If she dies all is lost for the Kingdom, for my subjects...for her..."
Aiden arched his brow, surprised once again by Jareth's words. "Sire?"
Jareth looked at him, swallowing hard.
"I thought I was going into this with one goal. To regain power over her and get back what I lost, but..." he glanced down at his hands, hesitating.
Aiden looked at him closely, nodding to him to continue.
"But now she and I are friends... I care about what happens to her. I only want what she took from me and when I have it I will give her a home in the city and make sure she has everything she needs and wants..."
Aiden was beyond shocked to hear his confession. He had never seen Jareth like this before, The King of the Goblins didn't simply make friends with people, especially not ones who caused him so much suffering and pain.
"Aren't you forgetting everything she did to you? You've suffered continuously for years because of the damage she did."
"I don't care about that anymore. She and I have moved past our differences... "
Aiden placed his hand on Jareth's shoulder. "Sire, did you say you don't care? Don't take this the wrong way, but you are letting yourself become bewitched by her... no matter how fond you are of her, you must remember your goal. It is up to you to make things right for your subjects. You are the King and it is your divine right to put the needs of your Kingdom before anything else. You'll have to put your personal feelings aside, at least until you have what you wanted from her in the beginning. That isn't me trying to be unkind, you know I like Sarah, I was easily charmed by her too... but you owe it to your Kingdom and your subjects to make things right again."
Jareth gazed at Aiden for a long moment before he nodded slowly in agreement. "You're right..." he whispered, "I'm a fool for not seeing this myself."
"You were overcome by your feelings, My Lord. Do not blame yourself. Just remember your goal."
Aiden gave Jareth another friendly shoulder squeeze before he left the room.
Jareth downed his second goblet of mead. Aiden was right. this time he would listen to him, no matter what happened. He had to put his personal feelings aside, no matter how strong they became. He had a goal and that goal was to regain his power no matter what the cost.
The room was hazy as her eyelids fluttered open.
"Oh! Your Majesty! She's awakenin'"
Sarah could faintly hear Patty call out and a few moments later she felt the soft touch of warm leather against her cheek.
She blinked a few times, her vision finally clearing, she was met with the pale mismatched eyes of the Goblin King.
"Sarah..." His voice was soft and gentle, laced with concern. "I was worried you weren't going to wake up." He whispered, gently caressing her cheek.
"Jareth..." she whispered, unaware that she had said his name instead of his title. Jareth didn't seem to care, though, and he leaned down to place a soft kiss against her forehead.
"I swear I'm going to lock you in a tower so you can't escape again." He chuckled weakly, pleased when he saw the corners of her mouth twitch.
Good, then she knew he was teasing her.
Feeling more awake, she tried to sit up, and with the help of Jareth and Patty, she managed too.
"My head hurts." She groaned, closing her eyes tightly.
"It will for some time I'm afraid. Being exposed to such magic will do that to you." He said gently as he pressed a glass of water to her lips.
"I've run the Labyrinth before and I felt just fine..."
"The Labyrinth was controlled by me back then, which meant a lot of its power was contained. But now it is wild and stronger than it has ever been before. Gods, Sarah, why did you go there?"
Sarah took a little sip of water from the glass he was holding up for her.
"I... I don't really know...It was like a driving force pushing me towards it. I couldn't stop myself." She gazed up at him. he looked intrigued by what she had said.
"And what happened when you got there?" he asked, his eyes searching hers for answers.
Sarah was about to tell him all that had happened when she suddenly remembered the warning the Labyrinth had given her.
"I will give thee fair warning, though, child, that the King's intentions aren't as pure as you think they are. Be wary of all those around you at the present time..."
Sarah cleared her throat. "Nothing happened, really... The second I got close to it I felt my head spin and I guess I must have passed out..."
Jareth watched her closely and then nodded, sighing softly. "I'm just relieved that you're alright and that nothing else happened. The Labyrinth is such a dangerous place now." He gently pulled some hair behind her ear. "There is always going to be a reason for me telling you not to do certain things... and it's only because I care."
Sarah gazed into his eyes and saw truth there. She knew now that he wasn't just saying that to control her and that he actually did care about her in some way.
"I can't pretend that I'm not annoyed that you went against our signed agreement, though. Because I am. I thought we'd come to an understanding but then you go and do that?" There was frustration in his voice even though he was trying to remain calm, not wanting to frighten her.
Sarah sighed. She did feel bad for going against their agreement. Especially now that she could see how distressed he was. He looked a little pale, the fine lines around his eyes showing just a little more than they usually did.
"I'm sorry... it was out of my control. I just felt this urge to get there as fast as I could... I'm sorry."
Jareth ran his fingers through his hair, letting out a shaky sigh before he nodded. "It's alright, don't apologize... I do believe that you're telling me the truth. I know The Labyrinth has a way of getting those it wants..."
Sarah furrowed her brow, wondering what he meant but felt too exhausted to ask him.
"How do you feel now, anyway?" He asked after a few silent moments had passed them by without a word.
"I'm okay... my head hurts but it'll pass..."
Jareth looked at Patty. "Please can you go and inform Aiden that Sarah has awoken and she is doing well, besides being very tired and having a bad headache."
Patty stood right away. "Course, sire." She curtsied and quickly scurried from the room.
"Thank you for looking out for me..." Sarah whispered once Patty had left.
Jareth gently took her hand in his, his leather-clad hand was warm and soft against her skin. "I will always look out for you, Sarah."
She smiled weakly as Jareth leaned forward to kiss her forehead again. "Please rest... you have a fever so you need to get as much sleep as possible."
Sarah didn't protest as Jareth gently helped her to lay down again. He pulled the covers up over her shoulder and gently stroked her hair from her face.
Sarah felt her eyes becoming heavy again and she whispered in a sleepy voice. "Stay with me?"
Jareth nodded gently, "Of course, precious... sleep."
Sarah wasn't sure what time it was when she woke up. All she knew was that it was incredibly silent and dark in her room. The only source of light was coming from the fireplace and the little dim light of the candle by her bed.
She rubbed her eyes sleepily, trying to adjust to the darkness. She felt something shift beside her and she gasped in surprise when she saw Jareth on the bed next to her. He was asleep in an upright position with his chin resting on his chest and his hands on his stomach. He looked oddly vulnerable when he was asleep.
She smiled softly, her heart fluttering in her chest.
"He stayed... he actually stayed with me..."
She felt tears gather in her eyes as she watched him, her head resting against the plump feather pillows.
He looked so beautiful... so peaceful; nothing like the cruel menacing Goblin King that had shown up in her parent's bedroom all those years ago and taken her brother away.
He shivered in his sleep and Sarah carefully pulled the blankets over him, smiling when he snuggled into them almost like a cat does when it found an extra soft blanket to sleep on.
She watched him for some time, comforted by his presence. For the very first time since sleeping in this room, she didn't feel quite so cold or alone.
She wondered if he'd meant to fall asleep or not? And what would his reaction be when he woke up?
In his sleep, he rolled over onto his side, wrapping his arm around her and snuggling against her. She bit her lip to stop herself from giggling when she imagined how embarrassed he was going to be in the morning when he woke beside her.
Feeling strangely comfortable and safe in his arms, she allowed herself to fall back to sleep, lulled by the sound of his gentle breathing against her ear.
The events of the day long forgotten as she fell into the most peaceful sleep she'd had in a long time.
Jareth woke to the gentle chimes of the grandfather clock in the hall. It was six o'clock; His usual rising time.
He sighed softly, fighting the urge to fall back to sleep. He felt so tired still, his bed felt extra warm and comfortable this morning.
"Mmm..."
Jareth's eyes snapped open when he heard the soft female moan coming from beside him. He glanced down and a small smile spread across his face when he saw Sarah cuddled up against him, her arm wrapped around his middle; her head gently resting against his chest.
"It seems that Sarah likes to snuggle..."
he mused to himself, unable to keep the smile from his face.
He was going to tease her about this for as long as he possibly could in the coming days. Hopefully, she did not do the same to him.
The rest of the week passed by very slowly for Sarah. Jareth had made her take a week off from her chores, telling her that she wasn't well enough to get back to work right away and despite her reluctance at first, she had to admit that he was right.
She felt fine. Her back was no longer sore from her fall off Spirit; She no longer felt dizzy or foggy-headed, but she did feel incredibly weak. She found herself resting most of the day in her chambers even though she wanted to be out and about.
Patty would bring her food and drink regularly and most days Jareth would come to check on her, often spending a few hours in her company, talking about the things they could do when she was better again.
It helped her a lot to have him be so caring towards her. He even brought her flowers that he had made for her from his very own magic which made them even more special to her.
He also brought her several different books to read so that she wouldn't be bored when he wasn't able to be with her. Sometimes he even read to her, something she found extremely touching.
Only last evening he'd read to her by the fire and she'd watched him closely as he spoke each written word. She found that she was becoming intrigued by the way he pronounced certain words in his velvety British accent, and by the way his mouth moved or the way his lips turned upwards when he found something amusing.
These were just some of the little things about him that made her heart flutter when looked at him.
She found herself gradually becoming closer to him despite the promise she'd made to herself when she'd first gotten here about not trusting him. Still, she was cautious around him, just in case.
However, it was becoming harder and harder to see him as the evil Goblin King she'd once known because he really wasn't that to her anymore...
He was her friend.
And she wanted more.
Every time he left her in the evenings after reading to her, she felt so incredibly cold and lonely. She was shocked by the discovery that she really didn't want him to leave her at all. She wanted to wake up beside him in the mornings. She wanted to rest her head on his chest and listen to his heartbeat as the sun rose over the Labyrinth every morning as she had a few nights ago. She wanted to see the sleepy smile on his face before he kissed her good morning.
It had all happened so quickly, she'd barely seen it coming...
She loved him.
She was in love with The Goblin King.
The realization of her feelings had really shocked her at first. She was only nineteen and Jareth was an immortal fae King who was currently bedding another woman.
He'd probably laugh at her if he knew what was in her heart.
She knew from their past encounters that he was attracted to her, but she wasn't about to assume he loved her. She didn't want to get her heart broken so it was better to just keep her feelings to herself. That way she wouldn't get hurt. Maybe if she ignored her feelings they'd go away again and then she'd be glad that she never addressed her feelings to him or to anyone else.
For now, all he was to her was a wonderful friend and that's probably all he could ever be.
2 weeks later
Jareth was lounging lazily in his window seat, watching as Sarah made his bed.
He'd missed watching her work.
At first, his only reason for watching her work would be to catch a glimpse of her breasts as she leaned over to tuck the blankets in or to look at her ass when she bent down to retrieve something from the floor. And although he still enjoyed that, he found he also just enjoyed her presence in general.
She was a hard worker and his bedroom always felt so much better after she cleaned it. Even though the other goblins did that well enough, it wasn't quite the same when Sarah didn't do it. She just had this way about her, she made everything feel homely.
He glanced out the window briefly, watching as the sunset over the Labyrinth. It was a glorious evening. perhaps he would go out for a flight later. It had been some time since he'd been in his owl form and he felt the need for a bit of fresh air tonight.
He heard something drop to the floor and snapped his attention back to Sarah, who bent down to pick up the broom that had slipped from her hands.
"Ah, yes! there they are! The most gorgeous breasts in the Underground..."
He smirked when Sarah glanced up at him and pouted, folding her arms over her chest.
"I knew there was a reason why you were so adamant that I wear these dresses while I work, you glittery git."
Jareth blinked, faking innocence. "Whatever are you talking about, Sarah?"
"You know damn well what I mean, Jareth." She gasped and covered her mouth when she realized she'd called him by his name instead of his title.
Jareth gazed at her for a moment before he stood, slowly approaching her, the sound of his heeled boots echoing in the room.
"Sarah, Sarah... that is the second time you've disobeyed me recently..."
Sarah backed up as he continued to approach her. "I'm sorry, sire..."
Jareth cocked his head to the side, "Hmm... maybe you are. But you've been getting away with too much recently. I think I've been too soft with you..."
Sarah gasped softly when she felt her back hit the tapestried wall. "You're kidding, right? It was just a slip-up..." She said.
She'd thought he'd been teasing her but now she wasn't so sure.
Jareth smirked as he gently hooked a gloved finger under her chin, making her look up into his eyes. He saw a little fear shinning back at him, but also something else... was it desire?
Her pupils were dilated.
He leaned in close, resting his arm above his head against the wall. "Perhaps I should punish you?" he whispered, his voice taking on a seductive quality.
Sarah swallowed thickly. This could NOT be happening.
He gently nudged her legs apart with his knee, slowly sliding his thigh against hers.
Okay, so this was definitely happening! The question was what did she do? Fight him? push him away? Tell him to stop? Or play him at his own game?
She smiled to herself. There was no harm in teasing him back.
She slowly ran her hand down his chest, her fingers icy cold against his pale exposed skin. He shivered at her touch, shocked by her bold caress.
"Sarah..." He whispered in her ear before he pressed his lips against her skin, lightly kissing just below her ear where her pulse was.
She felt her heart begin to pound in her chest, her eyes fluttering closed. He was so close, his lips pressed against her neck, causing goosebumps to appear on her skin.
Ugh! she had such a weakness for neck kisses!
She felt him begin to place open-mouthed kisses to her neck, his hand slowly sliding up and down her sides.
"Oh, my god... this feels so good, I've literally forgotten how to breathe..."
"Focus, Sarah! Don't just let him drive you wild, do something to make him feel the same way!"
She slowly wrapped her arms around him, sliding her hands up and down his back, delighted when she felt him shiver against her.
She liked feeling him shiver, it made her feel powerful to cause the man she had feelings for such pleasure and she wanted to bring him more.
Slowly she allowed her hands to wander lower until she was gently caressing his tight little ass.
He let out a soft growl and hoisted her up against the wall, his lips crushing against hers in a searing kiss.
"Okay, that was way too far!"
She gasped against his lips which turned into a soft moan, unable to help herself.
She had been kissed before, but nobody had ever picked her up and pressed her against the wall. Or kissed her in the way that he was kissing her right now. It was so incredibly erotic, she could feel her body responding to him, her heart hammering hard in her chest.
He broke apart their kiss suddenly and gazed into her eyes, whispering breathlessly, "Sarah...I want you to call me Jareth from now on. I was teasing when I said I'd punish you." A little grin spread across his face. "Or was I?" He winked at her before he returned to kissing her neck and collar bone, trembling when she let out another soft moan.
He wanted her so badly it was almost driving him insane!
Even though his lips were like heaven against her skin, she wanted to be certain of what he'd just told her. Perhaps she'd misheard him.
"Wait, did you say you want me to call you by your name?" She asked.
"Yes..." he whispered, his voice muffled against her skin.
She felt her heart summersault in her chest and she swallowed hard as she felt tears begin to form in her eyes. "Why?" she asked breathlessly, trying desperately to keep the emotion out of her voice.
"Because I love the way you say it..." he admitted as his head rose up again so that he could look into her eyes. "I don't get much true pleasure in my life, but hearing the way you say my name brings me pleasure like you wouldn't believe. Besides... I trust you with my name, you're my friend, Sarah..." He gently stroked her cheek when he saw her swallow the lump in her throat, blinking back her tears.
"Just be sure to use my title when you're working with the other servants?" he whispered, his voice gentle.
She nodded weakly, trying to stop feeling so emotional. She must look so pathetic to him, with her teary eyes. How embarrassing! Especially as they'd been having such a heated moment beforehand.
Jareth gazed at her for a few moments before he leaned in close again. He gently captured her lips with his, his eyes falling closed.
It wasn't a heated kiss like they'd shared only moments before, but somehow this kiss was better. This kiss wasn't just passionate, it was tender, it was true, it was loving...
A knock on the door interrupted their moment and Jareth gently broke the kiss, gazing at the woman he still had up against the wall. She was staring at him with her beautiful green eyes, a little smile on her lips.
The door swung open suddenly and Aiden burst in. He blinked in surprise when he saw Jareth scowling back at him with Sarah in his arms, her back pressed up against the stone wall.
Jareth gently put Sarah down, whispering in her ear, "I'll come and see you later..."
She nodded before she quickly ran from the room, her face red from the embarrassment of being caught.
"You'd better have a fucking good explanation for bursting in like that," Jareth spat, his voice dripping in anger, his jaw tight.
"Well, well, well... I never expected to see you and Sarah like that this fast," he said, approaching Jareth with a big grin on his face."It's really working isn't it?"
Jareth lifted his goblet from the desk, bringing it to his lips. "What's working?"
Aiden rolled his eyes and chuckled to himself. "Don't play dumb, my good man! You know of what I speak."
"Perhaps I do, perhaps I don't. Either way we could have saved time if you'd have just told me what you meant."
Aiden sighed. He could see Jareth was in a mood. Probably because he'd interrupted his heavy makeout session with Sarah.
"I'm sorry I interrupted you and Sarah. As I said, I wasn't expecting things to have moved that fast with you two..."
Jareth glanced out the window, the sun had almost completely set, leaving behind a beautiful orange and pink sky. In his mind's eye, he could still see her gazing up at him with those bewitching green eyes, and her soft lips slightly swollen from their kissing...
He cleared his throat before continuing
"She hasn't confessed any feelings to me. Nothing has changed here, so don't get your hopes up. And this isn't the first time I've kissed Sarah."
Aiden frowned "You've kissed her before?"
"Yes, on several different occasions."
"When?"
Jareth let out an irritated sigh. "Are you really so lonely and desperate for intimacy that you would want to hear every detail about me and Sarah?"
Aiden looked offended by Jareth's words and he shook his head slowly. "Yes, I am lonely. I have to live each day without my beautiful wife at my side. Every day I have to bear the pain of knowing I'll never see her face again except for her likeness in our child's features. But, no. I am not desperate to hear every detail about you and Sarah so don't bother sharing it." He turned to leave but Jareth grabbed his arm
"Aiden, don't leave. I'm sorry... I should not have been so cruel towards you. In my frustration, I lashed out and I shouldn't have. Please accept my apologies and join me for a drink?"
Aiden was surprised that Jareth had offered such a sincere apology so quickly. Jareth had never been the type of man to admit his wrongdoing so fast. It made him wonder if Sarah was actually having a positive effect on him as well as he might be having one on her.
"Thank you...I forgive you."
Jareth put his hand on his shoulder and lead him to the velvet couch by the fire. Aiden took a seat as Jareth poured him a drink.
"Our first kiss was when she first got here... the second only a few weeks ago when I took her to the market. We stopped at the old tavern to eat... one thing lead to another and we ended up kissing passionately... I'm not sure how it happened. We'd both been drinking mead and we both find each other attractive. She has admitted this to me already."
Aiden raised his brow suspiciously. "She's openly admitted her attraction to you?"
Jareth passed Aiden his drink and sighed. "Alright... well, not verbally. But she hasn't denied her attraction either."
Aiden smirked."That still isn't the same as her admitting her attraction towards you."
Jareth folded his arms, glaring at him. "Are you done with being a cocky git, Aiden?" he said, raising an elegant eyebrow.
Aiden sighed, raising his hand. "Alright, alright, point taken."
Jareth leaned up against the fireplace, resting his arm against the ornate marble detailing. "Besides, if she didn't find me attractive she wouldn't kiss me. But anyway, that's all besides the point."
Aiden took a sip of his mead before glancing over at Jareth who had his back to him. "She obviously feels something for you. Have you noticed any difference in her behavior towards you?"
Jareth nodded, his messy blonde hair bouncing slightly. "Oh, yes... most definitely. Especially since I visited her when she was unwell. I read to her every evening...we've both bonded in that time."
"Then what are you worried about? Things are moving faster than we expected and that's wonderful! Keep up the good work and she'll be yours before you even realize it. Then all of this will be over."
Jareth gazed into the fire, swallowing hard as he felt a mixture of emotions in his chest.
"Yes... and that's what I'm afraid of..."
