Author Notes: This was meant to be a really sweet reunion fic. Where did all the angst come from? *cries*

This is set during Act II after Seidou gets back from Koushien. It takes place a little before Eijun sees Haruichi's haircut.

This is part of my That Sky series. It is a loose sequel to my That Yearning Spring Sky fic, but you don't need to read it to read this part, although some dialogue from that fic is mentioned.

I hope y'all enjoy it!

That Tangible Spring Sky

Mei could be patient when he wanted to be.

Although he struggled with being patient a lot.

Especially when it came to his relationship with Eijun.

(He wanted to tell Seidou about their relationship. And he really wanted to mark Eijun.)

So it came as no surprise that he felt impatient as he waited for Eijun to text him.

He did have practice, which helped a little.

And he refused to let his feelings for Eijun affect baseball.

So he concentrated on practice, hoping he'll see a text from Eijun after practice was over.

Sure enough, Eijun had texted him while he was at practice.

My Knight: Mei! I just finished running!

My Knight: You still coming?

My Knight: I really want to see you

My Knight: Or are you still practicing?

My Knight: I can wait. It is almost dinnertime after all

Mei's heart raced at Eijun wanting to see him.

He quickly wiped his sweat off before changing out of his practice uniform.

His teammates asked questions when they noticed him leaving, but he only waved his hand dismissively and told them he would see them at dinner.

He texted Eijun back to say he was coming before leaving Inashiro grounds.

Almost an hour later, he tapped his foot, waiting for Eijun under the tree just outside the Seidou dormitory.

He had already texted Eijun to let him know he had arrived.

So where was he?

He was about to text Eijun again, already taking out his phone.

But a familiar voice called out to him before he could.

"Mei!"

He looked up, smiling softly despite himself at the sight of Eijun jogging toward him.

As Eijun got closer, he pocketed his phone and opened his arms, his soft smile still on his face as Eijun almost jumped into them.

He pulled him close, burying his face in his shoulder, letting out a muffled approving sound as Eijun wrapped his arms around him.

Eijun…

It was Eijun.

He was finally here.

Finally back in Tokyo.

And in his arms.

(Like it always should be.)

Eijun buried his face in his shoulder, tightening his grip around him.

Mei tightened his own grip around him, not wanting him to leave.

This…

This was what he had been waiting for.

He had missed Eijun a lot while he was at Koushien.

And he could tell by the way Eijun held onto him that he had felt the same.

It felt so nice, knowing Eijun was here with him.

And not still in Osaka.

If Seidou were a stronger team, he would've had to wait at least a couple more days.

(He didn't like that thought. He didn't like that at all.)

But while it would've been painful, he would've waited.

Because Eijun was worth it.

(He still hated having to wait, though. Maybe he could convince Eijun to come with him to Summer Koushien. Or at least a visit if Eijun was busy with practice?)

"Mei."

He hummed, not looking up from his shoulder.

"I…"

Curious, he looked up from his shoulder, turning his head to look at him.

Eijun shook his head before relaxing his grip and pulling away, turning his head to look at him. "I just…"

He almost rolled his eyes. "Hurry up and tell me."

"It's good to see you again."

He froze, watching as Eijun's eyes softened.

"I missed you so much."

He pulled away, eyes softening. "It's good to see you, too." He almost had to look away as Eijun gave him his smile. "I missed you."

Eijun closed his eyes briefly, tightening his grip around him again. "I'm… glad you mentioned wanting to meet up as soon as I got back. Thank you for coming."

"Of… Of course." Mei kissed his forehead, letting his lips linger for a few moments. "You know me. I can be really impatient at times." He made a face, lips twitching as Eijun laughed. "Besides…" He gave him a soft look. "You're the one who texted me. I couldn't ignore that."

Eijun's eyes lit up, a mischievous gleam in them. "You couldn't, huh? I didn't know you like me that much."

He rolled his eyes good-naturedly, causing Eijun to snicker. "That's not what I mean, and you know it."

"I'm just kidding." Eijun's eyes softened. "Thank you, Mei. I'm really happy you're here."

He almost cleared his throat at those soft golden eyes. "Well, you did ask me to come." He smirked, pulling him closer. "You must really like me, huh?"

Eijun flushed, causing his smirk to widen. "Is that bad?"

He raised his eyebrows. "Bad? How can liking the prince be bad?" His smirk remained on his face as Eijun rolled his eyes. "But seriously…" His eyes softened. "You know how I feel about you."

"I do. And I'm glad you do." Eijun kissed his cheek, eyes lingering on his lips before briefly looking away, his cheeks pink.

And while he did feel tempted to kiss him, he wanted to do something else first.

He looked him up and down, causing Eijun to raise an eyebrow. "You don't look that different."

Eijun snorted. "Like I'll change that much in the time I was away from you."

He grinned, eyes gleaming mischievously. "I heard people talking about how I was different after Koushien. But then again, I did do much better than you." He almost smirked as Eijun shot him a dirty look. "Koushien changes people, you know."

Eijun probably didn't realize how much getting to Koushien and getting to play there would affect him.

Or the rest of his team for that matter.

(Especially after how Furuya pitched. After experiencing such a stage, Furuya will be under a lot of pressure.)

"It's that big of a stage, huh?" Eijun hummed, as if the thought had never occurred to him.

Knowing Eijun, that was definitely a possibility.

He shrugged, his thumb rubbing circles into his waist, his grin widening as Eijun shivered and moved closer. "I've heard stories of pitchers who pitched there crumbling under the pressure when they got back."

Eijun's eyes widened. "Eh? Why?"

"How should I put it?" He hummed, tempted to tap his chin. "Pitching against the teams in Tokyo is nothing like pitching against some of the top teams in Japan. Especially when you're standing on that stage." He smirked. "I mean, I was always a great pitcher, but I got even better after pitching at Koushien."

Eijun rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "So you never experienced any of that… pressure?"

Mei frowned deeply, almost wincing as he remembered what happened during his first year. "I did feel that pressure, but most of that pressure was… self-inflicted. It was different than the pressure other pitchers have probably felt."

"Self-inflicted?" Eijun gave him a concerned look. "What do you mean?"

And while his chest felt warm at his concern, he wanted to lie.

Or change the subject.

He had never told Eijun about what happened at Koushien when he was a first year.

(Of course, Eijun could've heard about it from Kazuya or any of his senpai. But as far as he knew, Eijun hadn't heard about what happened yet.)

And he… really didn't want to tell him.

Especially not now.

He'll… tell him someday.

Just… not now.

He cleared his throat, wincing despite himself at the thought of telling him. "Not now."

"Eh?"

He closed his eyes briefly, a pained expression coming onto his face. "I know you're curious. And I know I'm being selfish. But…" He took a deep breath. "Not now. I'll tell you one day."

"Okay."

Mei blinked a few times, his jaw dropping despite himself. "Eh? You're alright with that?"

Eijun furrowed his eyebrows. "Well, I am curious. And you are being selfish, especially after you brought it up. But…" His eyes softened. "You said you'll tell me one day. So I'll wait."

"You…" Mei's eyes widened. He shook his head, lips twitching at his confused look. "I should've known you'd say something like that."

Eijun grinned devilishly. "Yeah, you should've. What's wrong with you?"

He rolled his eyes. "But seriously…" He gave him a soft look. "Thank you."

"You're always looking out for me and respecting my feelings." Eijun smiled softly. "I should do the same for you." He kissed his forehead. "You're not alone, you know."

Mei didn't know what it was exactly.

Maybe it was Eijun's kindness and understanding?

Or maybe it was how Eijun reassured him that he wasn't alone?

But he felt his eyes starting to water.

He quickly buried his face in Eijun's shoulder, blinking furiously to keep the tears from falling.

Eijun kept him close, running his fingers through his hair, causing him to smile despite himself.

(He didn't even care Eijun was messing up his hair.)

He almost couldn't believe what was going on.

He had come to Seidou to see Eijun again.

And hopefully comfort him about Koushien.

He never thought Eijun would end up comforting him instead.

He always tried to be strong and cool around Eijun.

Part of it was because of his pride, as he didn't like being vulnerable around people.

But most of it was because he knew Eijun saw him that way.

Mei was his rival and his enemy's ace.

He (and Inashiro) didn't lose.

(Their loss during the fall tournament was his fault. And something that wouldn't happen again.)

He was the guy everyone called the Prince of the Capital.

A lot of people, especially fellow baseball players, looked up to him and wanted to become him.

Even Eijun looked up to him and wanted to become him.

So it was… difficult to let his guard down and be vulnerable around him.

But Eijun liked all of him and wanted to see every side to him.

Even his vulnerable side.

And honestly?

He didn't hate the thought of being vulnerable around him.

As he knew Eijun wouldn't judge him and would still like him regardless.

He pulled away several moments later, smirking at his confused look. "Telling me I'm not alone… You're so sappy," he teased.

Eijun flushed, but he didn't look away. "But it's true. We're in this together, aren't we?"

"Of course." His smirk remained on his face. "You can't get rid of me that easily."

Eijun laughed softly for some reason. "Trust me. I'm very happy we're still together." He looked away, frowning deeply, causing him to frown. "And I'm glad you don't find me annoying," he muttered.

Mei's eyes darkened.

He felt his hands twitching, wanting to punch Eijun's teammates.

Seriously, what was wrong with them?

Sure, Eijun annoyed him a lot of the time.

But he wasn't annoying.

He tightened his grip around him, glowering in the direction of the Seidou dormitory.

If it weren't for the fact that he knew Eijun wouldn't like it, he would march in there and lecture them about how to take care of their teammate.

Did they not care about Eijun's feelings?

Eijun chuckling caused him to look back at him, raising an eyebrow.

But instead of saying something, Eijun tightened his own grip, giving him a soft, grateful smile.

He almost huffed, wanting to hate the way Eijun's soft smile melted his anger.

He didn't care what Eijun thought.

One day, he will confront Seidou about their treatment of Eijun and let them know what he thought about it.

Because it wasn't right.

He kissed his forehead, letting his lips linger for a few moments. "Well, not many people have caught my eye quite like you have." He smirked, causing Eijun to raise an eyebrow. "You should feel honored that the prince is interested in you."

Eijun rolled his eyes, causing him to snicker.

"But seriously…" His eyes softened. "I'm here for you. Always."

Eijun gave him his smile, taking his breath away. "I'm glad, Mei. Thank you."

… Mei couldn't take it anymore.

He thought he could wait.

Thought a hug would be enough to satisfy his craving.

And prove Eijun was there.

And not still in Osaka.

But maybe what he really wanted was a kiss.

They always greeted each other with a kiss after all.

And he refused to go back to Inashiro without kissing him.

At least once.

He bit back his smirk at noticing how Eijun's eyes stared at his lips.

Eijun felt the same as him.

That was all he needed to know.

He kissed him, smirking into the kiss as Eijun gasped before kissing back enthusiastically.

He pulled him closer so that nothing separated their chests, wanting to be as close to him as possible.

Close to him enough that he couldn't tell where either of them started or ended.

Eijun let out an approving sound, trying to pull him even closer, as if he needed the contact as much as Mei did.

Mei pulled away a few moments later, laughing as Eijun pulled him back in.

Eijun was a lot more eager with this kiss, using his tongue and even his teeth.

But he didn't mind, kissing him back just as eagerly, both moaning as their tongues touched.

Eijun stepped backward, pulling him with him until his back hit the wall, his dark golden eyes watching him as he pulled away.

Almost shivering at the look in his eyes, he couldn't stop himself from kissing him again, Eijun letting out another approving sound.

He kissed him softly and gently for a few moments before licking his lower lip, wanting to deepen the kiss.

To his surprise, Eijun… immediately parted his lips, causing him to blink.

Usually, Eijun liked teasing him and liked waiting until he grew impatient before he opened his mouth.

Eijun must want this as much as he did.

His tongue darted forward, exploring his mouth.

He didn't touch Eijun's tongue, preferring to explore the rest of his mouth instead, causing Eijun to whine.

A few moments later, he felt satisfied with his exploration of his mouth, finally touching Eijun's tongue.

Eijun moaned, clinging to him, as if he were about to fall and needed to hold onto him.

Or as if… he felt the same as him.

Wanting to make sure he was with him.

He could smell Eijun's sweat, almost moaning at the thought of taking a shower with him.

(Or a bath. He loved the thought of taking a bath with Eijun.)

He couldn't help but sneak glances at him as the kiss continued.

Eijun looked very handsome in his current outfit.

For once, Eijun wasn't wearing his Seidou practice uniform.

He wore a black long-sleeved undershirt under a white T-shirt, black compression tights under dark blue shorts, and white tennis shoes.

His eyes were closed, but he knew once he opened them, he would see those bright golden eyes that resembled honey.

His dark brown hair was messy and stood up all over the place, as if Eijun had been running face first into a gust of wind.

And more importantly…

His body was so close and warm against his own, their chests touching and their hearts beating together like a secret melody.

Like a melody their hearts could only make when they were this close.

And together.

Mei pulled away a few moments later, almost grinning as Eijun followed him unconsciously.

Eijun's eyes opened, giving him that soft look that always made his heart flutter and feel warm.

That soft look…

It was all for him.

And no one else.

His cheeks were a pretty pink, and he breathed heavily.

The streetlight above them shined a light on them and only them, as if they were the stars of a show.

And while it probably wasn't too smart to hold each other and kiss under a literal spotlight, especially somewhere anyone from Seidou could walk out and see them…

He didn't care.

And Eijun either didn't care or had forgotten, his attention on him and only him this whole time.

It made him happy either way.

He smiled softly, laughing as Eijun pulled him close and nuzzled his neck.

He tried to ignore the temptation.

(Really, he did.)

But it was hard to ignore Eijun's ears when they were so close.

He could easily lean in and—

Eijun yelped, the loud sound almost making him jump with how close it was to his ear.

He blinked a few times, belatedly realizing he had nipped his ear.

Eijun shot him a dirty look as he pulled away, grinning cheekily.

"Oops?"

Eijun rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "Don't give me that. I know you don't feel bad about it."

"Was it that obvious?"

Eijun gasped as he leaned back in, nibbling his ear. "You know I…" He yelped again as Mei nipped it again. "You know how I feel about that."

Mei pulled away, smirking. "Yeah, you love it."

"I wouldn't say I love it." Eijun huffed. His cheeks flushed pink. "But… It doesn't feel bad. And I… like it when you do that."

Mei snickered, nibbling his other ear, causing Eijun to gasp again. "It's alright to admit you love it, you know. It feels good when you bite my ears."

"One of these days, you're going to leave a mark. And I'll have to explain how I got it." Eijun huffed again, Mei's smirk widening as Eijun pulled him closer.

He nipped it, causing Eijun to yelp. "That wouldn't be that bad, now would it?" He pulled away, his eyes dark, Eijun shivering when he met his eyes. "You can tell everyone how you belong to me."

Eijun's breathing hitched for some reason as they kept eye contact. He pursed his lips, looking away briefly. "Mei, I…"

"Are you sure you heard something?"

They froze at the unfamiliar voice behind the wall.

"I'm sure. It sounded like someone was crying out or something."

Eijun flushed, causing him to snicker.

"Should we go check just in case? What if someone's in trouble?" the second voice asked, sounding worried.

Eijun froze, looking at him with wide eyes before trying to move out of his arms.

And while he knew how Eijun felt about wanting to tell his team about their relationship, he… didn't want to let him go.

They didn't have as much time together as he wanted.

So he tightened his grip, leaning in and laying his head on Eijun's shoulder, Eijun immediately stopping and looking at him wide-eyed.

"What are you doing?" Eijun hissed.

He hummed into his shoulder before turning his head to look at him. "Can you blame me? You've been away at Koushien for so long that I don't feel like letting you go yet."

"Some of my teammates are right behind this wall and probably on their way!" Eijun narrowed his eyes. "Do you realize the situation we're in right now?"

Mei's eyes darkened. "Maybe I'm tired of all this secrecy. Why are you so concerned with what they think?" he hissed. "Do you want their approval that badly?"

Eijun sighed, his heart clenching at the sad look on his face. "It's not like that. I'll…" He wrapped his arms around him again, keeping him close. "I'm going to date you whether they approve or not."

If this were any other situation, Mei might've smirked and teased him.

But instead, he pulled away, narrowing his eyes. "Then what's the problem? You should just tell them and get it over with. This…" He took a deep breath, letting go with one hand to cup his cheek, eyes softening as Eijun held his hand there. "You've been anguishing over this for too long. And I hate it."

"Mei…" Eijun looked at him with sad golden eyes.

He stepped closer. "Just tell them. What's the worst that can happen?"

Eijun bit his lower lip. "They… They could—"

"Are you sure you heard something?"

Eijun froze at the voice.

Compared to before, though, the voice sounded closer, as if the people behind the wall had walked closer to the entrance of the dormitory.

"I'm sure! Look, can we just make sure? I'll shut up if we take a quick look!" the second voice from earlier said.

"Fine. I guess that's alright. I would hate it if someone was in trouble, and we didn't help them."

The second person laughed. "Right?"

"Shut up! You don't need to sound so smug about it!"

At the sound of footsteps approaching the entrance of the dormitory, Eijun looked over at it before giving him a panicked look, causing his heart to clench.

This secret relationship of theirs was hurting Eijun.

And he wished Eijun would hurry up and tell his teammates about them.

(Not just because he wanted to claim Eijun in front of them, but also because it was hurting him.)

… But maybe he was being selfish?

He didn't know Eijun's teammates as well as Eijun knew them.

Maybe Eijun was right to feel worried about their reaction?

He was Seidou's enemy after all.

And while he didn't know how much Eijun's teammates knew about him or the rumors surrounding him, he knew Seidou didn't think too highly of him.

(Not that he cared what Seidou thought of him. But he knew Seidou will give Eijun a hard time when they found out about their relationship because of his reputation.)

Eijun's teammates walked closer, talking about what to do if someone did need their help, almost causing him to roll his eyes.

(They were so loud. And if someone was in trouble, the person would've either ran away already or kidnapped the person who cried out.)

Eijun, who had clearly learned from last time, didn't move in his arms, giving him a panicked, almost pleading look, causing his heart to scream in pain.

If Eijun wasn't ready to tell his teammates about them, he shouldn't force him.

He had promised to wait after all.

So although he thought getting caught by Eijun's teammates wouldn't be that bad, he leaned in closer to him, letting go with his right arm and setting it against the wall, blocking their view of Eijun.

"Mei…?"

He shushed him, eyes darting down to his lips. "Whatever happens, don't let go of me. Or look away from me."

"But—"

He shushed him again, glancing over at the entrance to the Seidou dormitory where it sounded like Eijun's teammates were about to turn the corner and see them. "Do you trust me?" he breathed.

Eijun's eyes widened before softening. "Always."

"Then trust me," he instructed, his chest feeling warm at his trust. "I'll get us through this." He gave him a serious look. "I promise."

Eijun glanced over at the entrance before nodding. "I trust you." He gave him his smile, taking his breath away. "What do you want me to do?"

Mei smirked, resisting the urge to clear his throat. "Don't let go of me and enjoy what I'll do to you. Be as loud as you can. If they suspect something, I'll cover for you."

Eijun's eyebrows furrowed. "Eh? What do you plan on—"

As the footsteps turned the corner, Eijun's teammates talking the whole time, Mei kissed him, pleased when Eijun immediately kissed back.

The sun had set a while ago.

And the closest streetlight was the one they stood under.

So as long as Eijun's teammates didn't get too close, they shouldn't be able to tell who they were.

If their eyesight was good, they might be able to spot him.

But he refused to let them spot Eijun.

Eijun moaned as he bit his lower lip, his lips parting to allow his tongue inside his mouth.

He tightened his grip around him, exploring his mouth before touching his tongue and causing him to moan again.

But instead of pulling away like earlier, he touched Eijun's tongue before pulling away, encouraging him to follow.

Eijun whined before following his tongue back to his mouth, letting out an approving sound as his tongue explored his mouth.

"Now where's the person who cried out?"

"I think it was right around here."

As Eijun's tongue touched his, he moaned loudly, exaggerating the action and hoping Eijun's teammates heard him.

"… Did you really convince me to come out here just for this?"

Mei almost smirked into the kiss, knowing they spotted them.

Or at least had heard him.

The second guy huffed. "Can you blame me? It sounded like one of them was in trouble."

"I can't believe I wasted my time on this. No one's in trouble. They're just teenagers kissing each other."

The second guy huffed again. "At least they have someone. Lucky guys. I'm so jealous."

"Come on."

Mei could practically hear the first guy rolling his eyes.

"Dinner is about to start. And I don't know about you, but I'm starving."

"I'm right behind you!"

It didn't take long for Eijun's teammates to leave, Mei waiting until they couldn't hear their footsteps or their voices anymore before pulling away from him.

Eijun breathed heavily, opening his eyes and looking in the direction of the entrance. "They're gone?"

"Yeah, it sounds like it." He smirked as Eijun looked back at him. "That was close, huh?"

Eijun let go to slap his shoulder, causing him to wince. "Are you crazy? What if they recognized us?"

He shrugged, his smirk still on his face. "It didn't sound like they did." When Eijun frowned deeply, his eyes softened. "I told you to trust me, didn't I? I would've never let them spot you if you don't want to be seen with me."

"… And you're alright with that?" Eijun continued frowning. "I thought you want me to tell them about us."

He almost rolled his eyes. "I do." He kissed his neck, causing Eijun to moan and tilt his head. He let out an approving hum against his skin, starting to kiss up and down his neck. "But I'm not going to force you to tell them. Especially if you're not ready."

As much as he wanted Eijun to tell his teammates about them, he wasn't going to be selfish and out their relationship to them when Eijun clearly didn't want them to know yet.

"Mei…"

He hummed against his skin again, concentrated on kissing his neck.

"Thank you."

He pulled away, causing Eijun to whine, his eyes wide. "Eh?"

Eijun pulled him close, kissing his cheek. "Thank you for being patient." He gave him a teasing grin. "I know that's difficult for you."

Mei snorted, tracing imaginary circles into Eijun's waist, almost smirking when Eijun shivered. "It is difficult, especially when all I want to do is tell them you're mine. But as I keep telling you, I can wait."

"It didn't sound that way earlier." Eijun gave him a skeptical look.

He sighed, closing his eyes briefly, missing Eijun's concerned look. "It's true I can be very impatient, especially when it comes to our relationship. But…" He gave him a serious look, causing Eijun's eyes to widen. "I won't do anything you're not comfortable with."

"Then all that earlier about telling them…" Eijun looked wide-eyed. "You were looking out for me?"

He shot him a dirty look. "Why do you sound so surprised? You know how I feel about you."

Eijun narrowed his eyes, giving him a suspicious look. "But you can be really selfish sometimes."

He pursed his lips, hating how he couldn't argue. "While that is true, I wasn't being selfish earlier," he said several moments later. He frowned at Eijun's raised eyebrows. "Okay, maybe I was. But that wasn't the only reason. You…"

"What is it?" Eijun cupped his cheek, eyes softening when he held onto his hand.

He almost huffed. "You hate this secrecy just as much as I do. And it's killing you." His own eyes softened. "I don't like seeing you in this much pain. If…" He hated the thought of it and didn't want to even say it out loud, but… "If it meant you wouldn't be in pain anymore, I—"

"Don't say it!"

He blinked a few times, belatedly realizing Eijun had let go of his cheek and was glaring at him now. "But I—"

"Don't say it!" Eijun glowered at him. "Don't you dare say it!"

His mouth dried up at the sight of furious golden eyes. "I…"

Eijun grabbed his collar, pulling him close so that their lips were centimeters away from each other. "How can you even think that? Do you not care about our relationship at all?"

"That's…" He cleared his throat, finding it hard to speak. "That's why I was—"

Eijun stepped closer, his fist tightening his grip on his collar before switching their positions, Mei gasping despite himself as he felt his back touch the wall. "I might be in pain, but that doesn't mean I want you to…" He closed his eyes briefly, taking a deep breath, Mei's eyes widening at his shiny eyes. "This is our relationship. You promised me, didn't you?"

"You're right. I did." Mei knew what promise he meant.

Eijun let go of his collar and placed his hand over the spot where his heart was. "It would hurt much worse if you left me." His voice cracked. "Much worse."

"Eijun, I…"

Eijun shivered before glowering at him again. "And I know it's the same for you. So don't…" He buried his face in his shoulder, turning his head so that he could hear him. "Don't say that. Stop thinking stupid thoughts." He huffed, tightening his grip around him. "Idiot."

Mei felt like hitting himself.

What was he thinking?

He knew Eijun wouldn't react well.

But making him almost cry?

"You're right." His voice was as low as Eijun's. He wrapped his arms around him, keeping him close. "I am an idiot. I'm sorry."

Eijun huffed again. "You better be, you ass. Don't you dare bring that up again."

"I won't." He sighed, kissing the top of his head. "I'm going to keep my promise."

Eijun hummed, his eyes soft. "Good. You mean so much to me."

He closed his eyes, listening to his heartbeat and feeling warm with Eijun this close to him. "I feel the same."

Eijun meant so much to him.

So much that… he felt afraid.

Afraid of what these growing feelings for Eijun could mean.

He had never liked someone before.

Or liked someone this much before.

Was it normal to like someone this much?

(To the point where it affected his pitching practice?)

But while he felt afraid, it was nothing compared to the fear he felt when he thought about Eijun leaving him.

Baseball was very important to him.

But Eijun was just as important to him.

He relaxed in Eijun's arms, almost smiling as Eijun nuzzled his neck before pulling away.

Eijun sighed, causing him to give him a concerned look. "I should get going." He looked disappointed. "I should probably stay with my team tonight."

Eijun cared deeply about his teammates.

(Even when they didn't do the same for him.)

Eijun always thought of his teammates.

Wanting to help them with his pitching.

Wanting to keep playing with them.

And although he knew that, Mei wished that Eijun would be selfish.

Just this once.

"Stay," he muttered, not letting go of him.

Eijun huffed, placing his hands on top of his own. "I thought you said you'd let go of me."

"I don't care what I said. Stay," he demanded.

Eijun closed his eyes briefly before meeting his eyes again, eyes sad. "I don't like this anymore than you do. But I can't stay with you."

"Stay." He pulled him close, nipping his ear, causing Eijun to yelp. "I don't want you to leave me."

Eijun bit his lower lip, looking as if he were thinking about it.

"Stay. With me." Mei gave him a serious look, causing Eijun's breathing to hitch. "Be selfish. Just this once."

Eijun squeezed his eyes shut before… shaking his head and letting go of his hands. His eyes opened, giving him a sad look. "I can't. They…" He cleared his throat, as if he had trouble speaking. "They mean a lot to me, too."

It was unfair.

And maybe cruel.

But…

"You care about them more than me?"

Eijun glared. "That's not what I'm saying, and you know it. Don't say anything like that again."

He huffed. "Fine." He reluctantly let go of him, looking away from him. "Be that way."

"Mei, don't be like this."

He clicked his tongue. "Why? You're the one choosing them over me."

"Just…"

He looked back at him, raising an eyebrow. "Just?"

Eijun gave him his smile, reaching out and squeezing his hand gently. "Just for tonight. I'll see you tomorrow night."

"And…" Mei had trouble swallowing for some reason. "And you won't go?" He gave his hand a squeeze back. "You'll stay?"

Eijun's golden eyes were as soft as honey. "I'll stay by your side the whole time. I'll even stay the night if you want me to."

His heart protested at the thought of Eijun leaving him tonight.

They had just met up again.

Eijun was finally back in Tokyo.

And by his side.

But he couldn't be selfish.

He had to settle for Eijun's promise.

When he had suggested they meet up after Eijun got back and Eijun told him they might not have that much time together, he thought he would be alright with it.

Because it meant he would get to see him again.

But letting him go when he had just gotten him back…

(Some part of him knew it was stupid. He'll see Eijun again tomorrow night after all. But…)

It hurt.

"You have to." He tried giving him a serious look, knowing Eijun saw him through him when he squeezed his hand again. "You can't leave me tomorrow night. That's an order."

Eijun laughed softly, nuzzling his neck before kissing him softly and gently. "Of course, Your Highness."

He smirked, squeezing his hand. "It's good you know who I am."

Instead of rolling his eyes like he normally did, Eijun smiled his smile, giving him another gentle kiss before letting go.

Mei reluctantly let go of him, Eijun smiling at him softly before walking away.

He waited until Eijun entered the Seidou dormitory before sighing and walking away.

He clenched his fists, wishing Eijun had been selfish.

He wanted his warmth next to him.

His hand in his as they walked back to Inashiro.

And… his presence in general.

Anything to let him know Eijun was there.

But he could wait.

Eijun promised him he would see him again tomorrow.

He could wait one more day.

ZZZ

Eijun wasn't sure what felt worse.

Harucchi…

No, Haruichi getting angry with him and refusing to speak to him.

(The rest of his teammates seemed to think he deserved the silent treatment, none of them wanting to hear his side of the story.)

Or having to leave Mei behind.

They had their phones.

And he made sure to text Mei a lot after dinner, his mood gloomy.

But it wasn't the same.

He looked over at where Haruichi was playing video games with Kuramochi-senpai and the rest of his teammates, resisting the urge to sigh.

This was… temporary.

Both the separation from Mei and this fight with Haruichi.

He'll see Mei tomorrow.

And Haruichi

They will kiss and make up soon.

They were too good friends to let an argument (or whatever happened) get between their friendship forever.

But despite knowing that, it still hurt.

He hugged his pillow, wishing it were Mei instead.

(No matter what Mei thought, he couldn't be selfish and ignore his teammates. And yet it had taken all his willpower not to turn around and tell Mei he had changed his mind, not wanting to leave him.)

His phone buzzed, letting him know Mei had texted him back.

He didn't feel like pretending to be cheerful tonight, preferring to mope on his bed instead.

Besides, it felt like no one wanted to talk to him anyway.

At least he had Mei.

He opened his phone, chuckling when he saw Mei's text.

He quickly sent a text back, almost snickering as he imagined Mei's reaction.

Tomorrow…

He'll see Mei tomorrow night.

He could wait that long.

ZZZ

Boss gave the first string the day off from practice, but everyone still ended up practicing on their own.

Eijun had wanted to go to the bullpen and bug Cap to catch for him.

But Cap had made it clear that none of them were pitching today.

(Sure, he understood why he was being so strict with Furuya, as Furuya had almost pitched a full game a couple of days ago. But he hadn't pitched at all. It was so unfair.)

So he ran some laps with Furuya and Nori-san before practicing his practice swings.

Just as he finished up his practice swings, his phone alarm went off, causing his eyes to widen.

He quickly turned off his alarm before starting to stretch.

"You're done already?"

He looked up from the middle of a stretch, surprised to see Furuya sitting next to him with a medicine ball. "Yeah, Boss warned us not to overwork ourselves. And I think Nori-san would scold me if I kept practicing."

Furuya frowned, probably remembering what happened yesterday. "That's true."

Eijun stretched some more as he waited to see if Furuya will continue the conversation.

"But it's not like you to stop practicing this early."

He looked up, raising an eyebrow.

Furuya paid that much attention to him?

He never knew that.

(Maybe it was because they spent a lot of time practicing with each other during the off-season?)

"You even set an alarm."

Sensing the unspoken question, Eijun grinned at him. "Yeah, well, I've got somewhere I need to be."

"A date?"

He beamed. "Yeah!"

Furuya tilted his head, frowning at him, as if he were trying to study him. "They're that important to you?" When he continued beaming, Furuya gestured to the baseball field. "What about baseball?"

Eijun gave him a reassuring smile. "Baseball will always be important to me, and I won't let my relationship affect it." He looked at him, determined. "Because I still plan on stealing the ace number off your back."

Furuya's eyes widened for some reason before giving him a determined look. "I won't lose."

"I'll definitely steal it!"

They bickered playfully as Eijun continued stretching.

He would never admit it, but he felt… grateful for the company.

Even if that company was Furuya.

He finished stretching a couple of minutes later, grabbing his bag before standing up and looking at him. "See you later, Furuya. Don't practice for much longer."

"I don't need you to tell me that."

He snickered before walking away, stopping at the edge of the field to bow to everyone still practicing. "This Sawamura is done with practice for the day and will be leaving first!"

Once he straightened, he noticed how everyone stared at him, many people exchanging wide-eyed looks.

He furrowed his eyebrows before shrugging, deciding to ignore it.

(It wasn't that strange. Everyone knew he was dating somebody. Why did they always look so surprised?)

He dashed back to his dorm room, taking a quick bath before getting ready.

After double checking he had his key, phone, and backpack, he left his room, smiling softly at the thought of seeing Mei again.

It was mid-afternoon by the time he arrived at Inashiro, Eijun snickering at the thought of surprising Mei.

… Come to think of it, would Mei still be practicing right now?

He furrowed his eyebrows.

He hadn't thought of that.

But the gates were open.

And he could even hear distant cheers, causing him to wonder if those were Inashiro players cheering or Inashiro alumni.

A few minutes later, he arrived at one of the practice fields, looking around for Mei.

Predictably, he found him on the mound, pitching to his teammates.

Maybe fielding practice?

Before he could get comfortable and watch Mei pitch, someone cleared their throat behind him, causing him to jump and turn around.

He paled at seeing Mei's Boss standing there, an unreadable look on his face. "Ah! Mei's Boss! Sorry for the intrusion!" He quickly bowed to him. Once he straightened, his cheeks flushed as Mei's Boss raised an eyebrow. "Uh… I mean… Kantoku! I'm sorry!"

Mei's Boss gave him another unreadable look, his neck twitching. "It's fine. Sawamura, I would like to speak to you."

"Y-Yes, Mei's Boss!" He felt like hitting himself. "I mean Kantoku!"

To his confusion, Mei's Boss only gestured for him to follow.

Eijun couldn't help but wonder if this was when Mei's Boss will finally confront him about his relationship with Mei.

He looked back at Mei standing on the mound, disappointed.

He had wanted to watch him pitch.

To his surprise, Mei's Boss took him to one of the dugouts, Eijun looking around hesitantly before joining him on the field.

His eyes lit up at watching Mei pitch from up close.

Mei was so cool.

Such a natural pitcher.

Belatedly, he realized why he stood on the field and why he got to watch Mei pitch from up close.

He turned his head to look at Mei's Boss, almost jumping when he noticed him watching him.

Before he could say anything, though, Mei's Boss looked away from him, watching Mei pitch instead. "Sawamura. I wanted to talk to you about your relationship with Narumiya."

Eijun had been expecting it.

But he almost gulped, feeling nervous for some reason. "W-What about it?"

"It's none of my business who you or Narumiya decide to date."

He blinked a few times. "Eh?"

"You two have been dating for a while now, and it doesn't look like it's affecting baseball."

… Wait.

Mei's Boss knew how long they had been dating?

Did Mei or one of his teammates tell him?

And he talked about it affecting baseball.

Why would he…?

His eyes widened.

Was it possible…?

He gave him a serious look. "We're not…" He didn't like having to say it out loud, but… "We're not using each other." When Mei's Boss looked at him, he clenched his fists. "Mei and I… I mean, Narumiya-san and I really like each other. That's why we're dating."

Mei's Boss nodded, watching the field again. "I didn't think you were that type of person anyway."

… Was that a compliment?

How did he even know that?

Did Mei or one of his teammates tell him about him?

"Narumiya-san and I promised not to let our relationship affect baseball. Baseball is very important to us both," Eijun said, hoping Mei's Boss understood.

Mei's Boss looked at him again. "It's none of my business who you or Narumiya decide to date. And it's obvious your relationship isn't affecting baseball or school."

When he didn't continue, Eijun furrowed his eyebrows. "Is that it?"

If he were honest, he thought Mei's Boss might scold him.

Or threaten him.

Mei was Inashiro's ace after all.

He wouldn't have been surprised if Mei's Boss had wanted to threaten him not to hurt Mei.

"There's nothing else for me to say." Mei's Boss gave him a pointed look. "I will remind you, though, that we are at a school and to keep your public displays of affection to a minimum."

Eijun's face flushed.

He wondered if Mei's Boss had seen them kissing outside somewhere.

Or… had heard them in Mei's dorm room.

Now that was a horrifying thought.

He cleared his throat. "O-Of course! I'll remember that, Boss!" His eyes widened. "I mean Kantoku!"

"One more thing."

He blinked a few times, wondering if he imagined Mei's Boss glaring at Mei. "Yes?"

"While it is none of my business who you or Narumiya decide to date, I do want you to tell me if Narumiya or any of my other players hurt you or make you uncomfortable in any way." Mei's Boss gave him a serious look, causing his eyes to widen.

… Was he…?

Was Mei's Boss… looking out for him?

Eijun bowed deeply. "Of course! I'll remember that! Thank you very much!"

His chest felt warm at the thought of Mei's Boss looking out for him.

And while he knew Mei's Boss probably did it out of his job as a coach and teacher, he… felt grateful.

And happy.

He had been a little worried (and afraid) of Mei's Boss' reaction to their relationship.

But now he could see he didn't need to worry.

Mei's Boss was a little scary, but he was also really nice.

When Mei's Boss didn't continue the conversation, he assumed it was over, looking at Mei on the mound, his eyes lighting up.

He felt thrilled he had come early.

As it meant he got to see Mei earlier than when he told him he would see him.

And he got to see him pitch again.

ZZZ

Mei clicked his tongue as Carlos hit his fastball, turning his head to see where it landed.

To his irritation, it landed in front of Sugi, who was playing in left field.

(If Sugi had sped up a little, he would've caught it.)

Mei huffed, turning to look at Carlos, Carlos grinning at him.

Well, Carlos was good at hitting fastballs.

But it still annoyed him.

Now he had to keep an eye on him.

As he didn't want Carlos to steal a base.

He turned his head to look at Itsuki, waiting for the next sign.

To his surprise, Itsuki… wasn't even looking at him.

He was about to call out to him, annoyed Itsuki wasn't paying attention during practice.

But a familiar whistle caught his attention.

Carlos was one of the only people he knew who whistled.

And he only whistled if…

His eyes widened.

But that was impossible.

Eijun had told him he wouldn't see him until later this evening.

And yet…

He looked around, eyes widening at spotting him by the dugout close to third base.

Eijun looked so… attractive.

He wore a blue long-sleeved dress shirt, brown pants, and blue and white sneakers.

Mei certainly didn't remember telling Eijun to look nice for their date.

But he wasn't complaining.

He pouted, watching as Eijun talked to someone next to him, Eijun looking serious for some reason.

He wanted Eijun's attention.

Eijun loved watching him pitch.

He scowled, about to glare at the person Eijun was talking to.

But he froze, his scowl disappearing at the sight of Kantoku.

Kantoku…

Kantoku was… talking to Eijun?

He wasn't scolding him, was he?

To his surprise, Kantoku looked at him, his neck twitching.

He knew what that meant.

Get back to practice.

Pursing his lips, he turned his head to look at Itsuki, taking a deep breath to calm himself.

As much as he wanted to get off the mound and walk over there, he knew he couldn't.

They were in the middle of practice after all.

And he promised Eijun their relationship wouldn't affect baseball.

Itsuki looked at him, eyebrows furrowing for some reason before giving him the next sign.

He nodded, getting into position, glowering at Carlos before throwing his next pitch.

Practice ended an hour later, Mei immediately making his way over to Eijun once he finished his stretches.

Eijun frowned at the text message, texting something back before sighing.

"Eijun!"

He looked up, smiling at seeing Mei striding toward him. "Mei!" He pocketed his phone before jogging over to him, hugging him once he was close enough.

He didn't even care Mei was still sweaty.

This was what he had been waiting for all day.

He buried his face in his shoulder, his smile still on his face as Mei wrapped his arms around him and kissed the top of his head.

"Is everything alright?"

He winced at the question, remembering the text he had received before turning his head to look at him. "Not really."

Mei ran his fingers through his hair, looking concerned. "He's still ignoring you?"

Last night, he had told Mei about what happened between him and… Haruichi.

And while Mei wasn't that supportive at first, he came around after seeing how upset he was.

(Mei had sent some laughing kaomojis, not caring when he had sent him some angry looking kaomojis. When Mei continued being a jerk, he had sent some upset looking kaomojis, Mei apologizing a few moments later.)

"I tried to talk to him, but…" He sighed, closing his eyes briefly. "He didn't want to listen."

Mei gave him a reassuring smile. "It'll be alright. Maybe he needs more time."

Having one of his closest friends ignore him…

It hurt.

But he believed in their friendship.

Haruichi will forgive him and talk to him again.

He just knew it.

"You're right." He smiled softly. "I'll wait for him to come to me. Thank you, Mei."

Mei smirked. "I love it when you tell me I'm right."

He rolled his eyes good-naturedly, pulling away a couple of meters to look at him. "It's good to see you."

"It's good to see you, too." Mei's smirk transformed into his cheeky grin. "You're early. Are you looking forward to our date that much?"

He flushed, causing Mei to snicker. "Well, we didn't have practice today. So I practiced a little before coming here." He huffed. "Cap didn't let me practice my pitching. All because Furuya's not allowed to pitch right now. It's so unfair."

Mei snickered again. "He has a point, you know." At his wide-eyed look, he hummed. "Kazuya knows you have a habit of overworking yourself. And even though you didn't pitch a lot at Koushien…" He grinned at his dirty look. "Kazuya's looking out for you and the other pitchers."

"But still!" Eijun complained.

Mei's eyes softened. "I'm sure he'll let you pitch tomorrow. Just wait until then."

Eijun pouted. "… Alright."

(He knew Mei was right and that Cap was looking out for him and the other pitchers. But he wanted to pitch. He didn't get to pitch a lot at Koushien.)

He hated having to wait.

"So…" Mei smirked, causing him to raise an eyebrow. "Did you watch me pitch?"

He rolled his eyes good-naturedly, causing him to snicker. "You know I did."

"What did you think?"

But before he could answer, Itsuki came up to them, looking worried. "Eijun! Are you alright? I saw you talking to Kantoku!"

"Ah…" Mei blinked before furrowing his eyebrows. "I wanted to ask you that, too. Are you alright?" He looked him up and down, as if he were trying to find unseen injuries.

Eijun almost rolled his eyes at the thought of Mei's Boss hurting him. "I'm alright. He just wanted to talk for a little bit."

"About us?" Mei frowned deeply.

Eijun gave him a reassuring smile. "You guys' Boss is really nice!"

To his amusement, Mei and Itsuki looked confused, maybe even skeptical.

Carlos-san and the rest of the first string strode over to them a couple of minutes later, wanting to know what happened with their coach.

Eijun had turned so that he could face them, smiling softly as Mei wrapped his arms around his waist from behind and pulled him close.

He had relaxed in his embrace, giving Mei a bright smile and touching his arms with his hands before looking at Mei's teammates and talking to them.

(Everyone kept glowering at Mei for some reason. And he had no idea why. Maybe something happened during practice?)

And at some point during the conversation, Mei had gotten impatient and interrupted his conversation with his one of his teammates to kiss him, smirking into the kiss as his teammates groaned and protested.

After going out and eating dinner, Mei took him back to Inashiro, bringing up his promise to stay with him.

Eijun waited until they were in Mei's room, the door locked behind them before wrapping his arms around him and kissing him softly. "I'm going to keep my promise. I'm staying with you tonight."

"Oh?" Mei waggled his eyebrows, causing him to snicker. "Does that mean you came here with certain… expectations?"

He grinned devilishly. "And what would those be?"

"Don't play dumb." Mei gestured to his bed. "It involves me, you, and my bed."

He hummed, eyes darting down to look at his lips. "I guess I do have certain… expectations."

Mei smirked, pulling him closer so that their chests touched. "I knew it."

"I am looking forward to sleeping in your bed again."

Mei's jaw dropped, causing him to snicker again. "Just sleeping?"

He grinned devilishly, giving him a quick kiss. "Just sleeping."

"You know you missed me." Mei pouted.

He frowned deeply, tightening his grip around him. "I did. I missed you so much." He closed his eyes briefly, sighing. "I…"

Mei furrowed his eyebrows. "What?"

"I guess it hasn't sunk in yet." At his confused look, Eijun gestured to Mei's dorm room. "That I'm here. With you. And not at Koushien still."

Mei sighed, his eyes softening. "I know what you mean. I keep thinking this is a dream. That I'll wake up and find out you're still at Koushien."

"But it's not, huh?" Eijun gave him a bright smile. "I'm here. With you."

Mei's eyes widened before softening. He gave him a long and gentle kiss, Eijun eagerly responding.

At some point, Mei had taken off his shirt, pushing him down on his bed and crawling on top of him.

Eijun pulled him closer, making their lips touch again, shivering as Mei's warm fingers curled around his waist.

Mei pulled away a few moments later, kissing his neck, causing him to moan and tilt his head.

"Mei…"

Mei hummed against his skin, not looking up from where he placed multiple kisses onto his neck.

"You watched us at Koushien, right?"

He froze at the question, pulling away to look at him, blinking at his serious look. "You know I did."

"You were right. About everything." Eijun sighed, causing his heart to clench.

And while normally he would feel happy and smug Eijun was telling him he was right, something felt very… wrong about the way Eijun said it.

He felt a sense of foreboding.

He somehow managed to raise an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

Eijun looked away, his golden eyes sad. "I didn't get to pitch again. I didn't…" He pushed at his chest gently, causing him to move away so that Eijun could sit up. He clenched his fists, looking frustrated. "I didn't do anything at Koushien."

Mei knew it was unfair, but…

"You're a relief pitcher. You have to show your coach why he should pick you." He almost felt bad as Eijun winced. "Because there's only one mound."

Eijun clenched his fists tighter before glaring at him. "Like you understand what I'm feeling."

"But I do." Mei frowned. "Well, maybe I don't understand completely. But I have been a relief pitcher before."

Eijun scoffed. "And then you quickly became the ace." He rolled his eyes. "See? You're nothing like me."

It was true he was a much better pitcher than Eijun was when he entered high school.

And when the third years retired after Summer Koushien in his first year, everyone knew he was the only one who could become the ace.

But he never liked how it happened.

"You're wrong."

Eijun furrowed his eyebrows. "Eh?"

… He didn't like the thought of it.

But maybe it was time to tell him what happened in his first year.

Even if it was… uncool.

(But he knew Eijun would understand, as Eijun wanted to see every side to him. And while Eijun hadn't felt anything like he had felt before, maybe he would understand that he wasn't always this… perfect pitcher.)

"I said you're wrong." Mei looked down at his hands, clenching his fists before looking at him. "I haven't always been this great pitcher, you know."

And he didn't know if it was because of his soft voice or because Eijun could tell something had happened.

But Eijun gave him a concerned look, immediately moving closer and grabbing his hands, his fists unclenching at his touch. "What do you mean?" His voice was as soft as his.

"Have you…" He took a deep breath, feeling his heart race for some reason. "Have you heard about what happened in my first year?"

Eijun blinked a few times before humming. "My senpai told me about how you stood in their way during the summer tournament." He furrowed his eyebrows. "I think I also remember hearing about how Inashiro lost during Summer Koushien?"

… So he hadn't heard.

Mei wasn't sure whether to feel relieved or irritated.

"Back then, I was a relief pitcher." Mei gave him a small smile, squeezing his hands gently. "I had the same number as you do right now."

Eijun's eyes widened. "Mei…"

He hummed, looking down at their hands. "I remember it clearly. It was the top of the eighth, and I knew they were going to do a squeeze."

"You mean you…?"

He tightened his grip on Eijun's hands. "I had been pitching great up to that point. But maybe the pressure got to me. Or maybe I…" He hated admitting it, but… "Maybe I was overconfident." He looked up, giving him a humorless grin. "You probably know what happens next, huh?"

As Eijun had done the same thing in his last game of middle school.

(It had been under different circumstances, but the result was the same.)

Instead of retorting, Eijun closed his eyes briefly, wincing before giving him a pained look. "Yeah. I know," he said hoarsely.

"It was my fault we lost." Mei huffed. "And yet, my senpai didn't blame me. All because I was a first year." He scowled.

Eijun's pained look remained on his face. "You felt as if they didn't trust you enough."

He was about to ask how Eijun knew that.

But then he remembered multiple times in the past when Eijun confided in him about being a relief pitcher.

Especially a relief pitcher at Seidou.

He relaxed his grip, squeezing his hands gently. "I cooped up in my room for days, blaming myself. I…" He closed his eyes briefly, taking a deep breath. "I didn't want to pitch. Not when that memory kept haunting me. I had… lost confidence in myself."

Eijun's eyes widened. "You did?"

He couldn't blame him for looking surprised.

Especially considering how he normally acted.

"… I didn't feel like going to practice. Or talking to anyone." Mei laughed humorlessly. "All I wanted was to coop up in my room and blame myself."

Eijun blinked a few times before furrowing his eyebrows. "What changed?"

He gave him a determined look. "I realized I wouldn't be satisfied if I continued like that."

"I'm not surprised." Eijun smiled his smile. "You love pitching. You could never give it up."

He kissed his cheek. "My form was ruined at that point. So I didn't pitch in the fall tournament. Instead, I practiced hard." He gave him a serious look. "Hard enough so that all my worries and fears disappeared. Hard enough so that I could trust my skills."

Eijun gasped, eyes widening, probably remembering when he had said the same thing to him when he suffered from the yips.

"I got my form back with my willpower, and I made sure to practice hard during the off-season." Mei shrugged, gesturing to himself. "And that's how I became the pitcher I am today."

Eijun blinked a few times, his eyes shining, as if he were about to cry.

Shaking his head fondly, he kissed his forehead before grinning cheekily. "It's not the exact same, but the prince has been in your shoes before." His eyes softened. "You understand what I'm saying, right?"

Eijun whimpered, tears coursing down his cheeks.

Before he could say or do anything else, though, Eijun dove forward, burying his face in his shoulder and wrapping his arms around him.

Shaking his head again, he wrapped his arms around him and kissed the top of his head. "Why are you crying? You should be honored I even told you about it," he joked.

But Eijun only shook his head, letting out a muffled whimper as he tightened his grip around him.

… Okay, maybe it was too early to joke about what happened.

Especially when Eijun had clearly taken their loss hard.

Which was understandable, considering what happened.

Mei sighed, kissing the top of his head again. "Sorry. That was inappropriate, huh?"

Eijun's shoulders trembled as he cried into his shoulder, holding onto him, as if he were afraid he might disappear.

He almost sighed again, running his fingers through his hair, his heart clenching as Eijun let out another muffled whimper.

He didn't mean to make him cry.

(As he hated it whenever Eijun cried.)

All he wanted was to show him he somewhat understood what he was feeling.

Ah.

Maybe that was why Eijun was crying?

No one at Seidou had to go through what Eijun had gone through.

He was probably one of the only ones who could empathize with him.

… How ironic was that?

He was Eijun and Seidou's enemy.

And he could empathize with Eijun more than Seidou ever could.

(… Not that they would try to empathize with him even if they could. Damn Seidou.)

He tightened his grip around Eijun, closing his eyes as he thought about how Eijun must feel.

Probably frustrated enough that he felt like screaming.

And yet, other times, he probably had trouble swallowing, as if he had something large stuck in his throat.

And it probably hurt to move.

He didn't know if he would ever admit it to him, but…

Eijun was… a lot stronger than he was.

Eijun had suffered from the yips.

And he had still gone to practice.

Even when he couldn't pitch.

But him?

Mei had blamed himself for their loss and cooped up in his room for days.

Skipping practice.

And… ruining his form.

… Well, he didn't do it anymore.

Part of it was that he was a much better pitcher now.

But most of it was because he knew crying and moping about it wouldn't change anything.

He didn't have time to cry and mope in his room.

He had to get stronger so that he could pitch at Koushien again.

Several minutes later, Eijun pulled away, his eyes puffy and red.

Eijun smiled his smile. "Thank you, Mei."

Mei reached out, combing his fingers through his hair, smiling softly as Eijun closed his eyes briefly at the touch. "I know it's difficult, but you'll get through this. You're strong."

"… What if…" Eijun bit his lower lip, looking hesitant. "What if I can't? What if I… stumble?"

He gave him a reassuring smile. "I know you can. You're my rival, aren't you?"

Eijun's eyes widened. "Mei…"

"And if you do ever stumble or lose confidence in yourself, I'll be right beside you." He leaned in, making their foreheads touch. "Come to me if you ever feel like crying. Or if you ever want to see me. For any reason."

Eijun beamed, his golden eyes as soft as honey. "I'll remember that!" He laughed softly for some reason. "Now who's the sappy one?" he teased.

Mei flushed, gently bumping his forehead with his own before pulling away. "You know you like it whenever I'm sappy." He grinned cheekily.

"You're so embarrassing." Eijun rolled his eyes good-naturedly.

He smirked, grabbing his hand and squeezing it gently. "But you do like it." His smirk widened as Eijun pursed his lips. "You do, huh?"

"It is nice whenever you're sweet." Eijun's cheeks were a pretty pink.

He snickered. "I'll have to be sweet more often then."

"That's impossible, considering you're such an ass," Eijun muttered, grinning as he shot a dirty look at him.

He tackled him, causing him to yelp.

And before he could get up, Mei leaned in, nipping his ear, causing him to yelp again.

Mei huffed, nibbling his ear, causing him to gasp. "You're so lucky I can control myself. Or I would punish you for being so impertinent."

"Oh?" Eijun grinned devilishly. "And how would you punish me?"

He nibbled his other ear, causing him to moan. "Oh, I think you know how." He pulled away, causing Eijun to whine, looking pointedly at his neck.

Eijun shivered, although he didn't know if it was because of his dark eyes or the thought of him marking him. "You really want to mark me, don't you?"

… Why did he sound so surprised?

"Of course I do!" He huffed again. "I told you, didn't I?" He tugged at the leather bracelet on Eijun's wrist. "This isn't enough for me. I want to mark you so that everyone knows you're mine."

Eijun shivered again before grinning devilishly, causing him to blink. "And I'll let you mark me."

He looked at him hopefully. "You will?"

"One day."

He groaned, Eijun laughing at him.

He hated being patient.

Especially when all he wanted was to mark him.

So that everyone knew Eijun was his.

He pouted, leaning in closer to give him the full effect of it. "So mean. And impertinent."

Eijun laughed again, grabbing him by his collar and pulling him close. "Let me make it up to you." He waggled his eyebrows before looking at his lips.

"You seriously think a kiss will make me feel better?" Mei scoffed, his lips twitching. "I'm not that simple."

Eijun hummed, tapping his chin before giving him a heated look, almost causing him to shiver. "Then what if I say I changed my mind?"

His eyes widened. "And you'd be alright with that?"

"Well, I am making it up to you." Eijun grinned devilishly. His eyes softened. "And I don't know about you, but I want to feel you." He reached out, running his fingers over his clothed arms. "You're here. With me."

As much as he wanted to…

Mei shook his head, kissing his forehead. "Not tonight. We can…" He closed his eyes briefly. "We can do that another night."

Eijun blinked a few times before furrowing his eyebrows. "Are you sure? You're the one who wanted to do it earlier."

That was true, but…

"I just…" He huffed at himself. "I'm not in the mood. We can do it another night." His eyes softened. "After all, it's not like you're going anywhere."

Eijun immediately shook his head, his eyes soft. "Never. I only want to be with you."

"I feel the same." He unbuttoned his shirt, gesturing to his bed. "Let's cuddle."

Eijun's eyes lit up.

To his amusement, Eijun quickly pushed him off so that he could take off his pants and socks, leaving him in his underwear. "Ready!"

He would've laughed at how eager he was.

And at how he resembled a dog wagging his tail, as if he were about to take him out on a walk.

But he couldn't laugh or even speak at those soft golden eyes.

And that soft smile reserved for him.

He really wanted to kiss him.

Getting up, he stepped close to him, wrapping his arms around him and kissing him.

Eijun smiled at the soft and gentle kiss, wrapping his arms around him.

He shivered as Mei rubbed circles into his bare waist and moved closer, irritated by the way Mei smirked into the kiss.

Arrogant jerk.

When Mei pulled away a few moments later, smirking at him, he pulled him back in, grinning as Mei gasped.

He pulled him close enough so that their chests touched, giving him a gentle kiss.

He licked his lower lip a few moments later, almost grinning again as Mei parted his lips, allowing his tongue inside his mouth.

Wanting to copy what Mei did yesterday and tease him, he explored his mouth, not touching his tongue at first.

It was only when Mei whined, his tongue trying to touch his own that he gave in and touched his tongue, Mei moaning.

He honestly wouldn't have minded if Mei wanted to have sex with him.

As it would've been a great way to feel him.

And know he was there.

But since Mei wasn't in the mood, he would respect his feelings.

And he loved cuddling with Mei.

Something about having Mei so close to him…

Their arms wrapped around each other…

Feeling his heartbeat and knowing that his heart belonged to him

It was one of the best feelings in the world.

After making their tongues touch again and letting out a moan of his own, Eijun pulled away, his cheeks pink.

To his satisfaction, Mei's cheeks were just as pink as his.

Eijun gave him his soft smile, causing Mei to smile back.

Mei pulled away to take off his clothes, leaving his underwear on before pulling back the covers.

He kissed his cheek before moving under the covers, giving him an expectant look.

Mei climbed into bed, fixing the covers around them before looking at him, his eyes soft as he snuggled up to him.

This was nice.

He wished they got more time alone.

He breathed in Mei's comforting scent, having missed it while he was at Koushien.

This…

This was Mei.

The guy he really liked.

This… wasn't a dream.

He could feel Mei's arms around him…

His warmth...

His heartbeat…

Whenever they cuddled like this, they weren't enemies.

They weren't even ace and relief pitcher.

They were just Eijun and Mei.

Two teenagers who really liked each other.

And it was nice to think that sometimes.

Especially since his teammates still didn't know about their relationship.

He sighed, kissing Mei's pitching shoulder.

His teammates probably won't react well to the news of their relationship.

Will they react as badly as Cap did when he found out?

What if they…

"What's wrong?"

He blinked a few times as Mei kissed his forehead, concerned. "Eh?"

Mei rolled his eyes. "You're obviously thinking about something. What is it?"

"I just…" He pursed his lips before shrugging. "I guess I'm just… worried."

Mei furrowed his eyebrows. "About what? I'm here with you."

He resisted the urge to roll his eyes at his ego. "About… About my teammates."

"Oh." Mei's eyes darkened. "Well, you know how I feel about them."

He gave him a pleading look. "Can't you just get along with them?"

Mei huffed, kissing his pitching shoulder. "I don't think they'll want to get along with me after we tell them about our relationship."

"Why?"

Mei tightened his grip around him, his eyes darkening. "Why? We're enemies. Do you not understand this, Eijun?" he said mockingly.

Eijun shivered, glaring at him. "Of course I understand that! But…" His eyes softened. "But we're still together." He frowned deeply. "And we're going to stay together even if they don't approve."

"That's…" Mei pursed his lips. "You're different."

He almost pouted. "You guys can't get along for my sake?"

"That's up to them. I've already told you my thoughts about this matter." Mei gave him a pointed look. "Remember?"

He whined, nuzzling his neck before pulling away. "So if they tried to get along with you, you'd be nice?"

To his disappointment, Mei shook his head. "I don't think they will." His eyes darkened. "And I refuse to stand by and let them insult you."

He looked away, missing the way Mei scowled. "I'm used to it. It's alright—"

"It's not alright!"

He flinched, looking back at him, eyes wide as Mei glowered at him.

"You deserve respect! You're still…" Mei took a deep breath, giving him a pained look. "You're still a person. With feelings."

Eijun's eyes softened. "Mei…"

"Sure, you can be an idiot at times." Mei grinned cheekily as he slapped his shoulder. "But that doesn't mean they're allowed to mistreat you."

Eijun sighed. "They're still my teammates. I don't want you guys to insult each other whenever I'm not there."

Mei glared, lightly bumping his forehead with his own. "That's not what I'm talking about."

"Then what are you talking about?"

Mei huffed. "Your teammates will insult you when they find out about us." He scoffed. "Probably even wonder why you're dating me."

Eijun was aware of the rumors surrounding Mei.

Of course, he hadn't known about them at first.

Especially when they first started dating.

But Mei told him all he needed to know.

And even after he found out about them, he continued trusting Mei.

His teammates had probably heard about the rumors surrounding Mei.

He could understand where Mei was coming from, but…

"It's alright." He gave him a hopeful look. "They will realize that not all the rumors are true. Especially after they get to know you."

Mei snorted. "And I keep telling you that's not going to happen. They don't like me."

"But—"

Mei rolled his eyes. "I don't care what they think of me. But I won't let them insult you. Especially when they don't care about you."

"They care—"

Mei growled, glowering at him, causing him to stare. "Why do you keep defending them? I know they're your teammates, but that doesn't mean you have to forgive them for everything!"

Eijun glared. "You don't know them like I know them! Stop judging them!"

"Can you blame me?" Mei raised his eyebrows. "After everything you told me about them?"

Eijun huffed. "Well, maybe I should stop telling you everything about them."

"It's too late for that." Mei's eyes darkened. "You've already given me all that I need to know. Besides…" His eyes softened. "I'd hate it if you were in pain, and you didn't tell me."

Eijun gave him a frustrated look. "But this isn't about me! Stop making this whole thing about me!"

Mei raised an eyebrow. "You want me to stop caring about you?" His eyes looked hurt. "You want me to stop liking you?"

"Think about yourself for a change!"

Mei's jaw dropped. "You want me to what?"

He almost let out a frustrated yell. "I'm worried about you, you ass!"

"Eh? Me?" Mei furrowed his eyebrows. "Why?"

He pulled away from him, sitting up and letting out a frustrated yell. "I don't care what they say to me! What if they hurt you?"

Mei sat up, eyes wide. "You…"

"Why do you think I care so much about how they see you?" Eijun ran a hand through his hair. "You can be an ass at times, but I don't want them to hurt you."

Mei's eyes softened. "Is that why you're so reluctant to tell them about us?"

He flushed. "Well, that's part of it."

Mei laughed.

And it wasn't one of his mocking laughs.

It was one of his genuine laughs.

And yet…

He frowned deeply, looking hurt. "Why did you laugh?"

Mei laughed softly before kissing his forehead. "Don't you get it? I'm trying to look out for you, but you're trying to look out for me."

… Huh?

He still didn't get it.

Why was that so funny?

Mei must've seen the look on his face as he snorted. "Look, if you're that worried, we don't have to tell them."

"But I want to tell them!"

Mei's eyes softened. "Then we'll have to take that risk." At his unhappy look, he grinned cheekily. "Some of your teammates may be stupider than you, but they're not that stupid."

"What's that supposed to mean!"

Mei snickered, reaching out for his hand and squeezing gently. "It means you don't have to worry about them hurting me." He shrugged. "They can try to hurt me with their words, but it won't affect me."

Eijun sighed, moving closer and resting his head on his shoulder. "Why do things have to be so complicated?"

"Hey, you knew what you were getting into when you agreed to date me."

He winced despite himself at his blunt reply. "I know. But…"

"But what?"

He pulled away, meeting his eyes. "Why can't they separate baseball and our relationship?"

Mei shook his head. "That's impossible, considering you're dating me." He hummed, tapping his chin. "If you were dating someone who wasn't me, they probably wouldn't care as much."

… Eijun hated that Mei was right.

If he were dating someone from Yakushi or even Sankou, his teammates might've supported his relationship.

Especially after they saw how happy he was.

But Mei was their enemy.

And with his reputation…

"But you're not that bad!" Eijun protested. "Why can't they see that?"

Mei rolled his eyes. "I honestly don't care what they think of me. But I'll try… to be civil to them. For you."

His eyes lit up, giving him a hopeful look. "You will?"

"… I'll try." Mei made a face. "If they start insulting you or interfering with our relationship, though, I can't promise anything."

Eijun smiled brightly before hugging him. "I'm happy to hear that! Thank you, Mei!"

Mei huffed. "I really won't hold back if they insult you or interfere with our relationship, you know."

"I know." He pulled away, grinning teasingly. "You and your temper."

Mei raised an eyebrow. "You're telling me you'd let them hurt me? Or interfere with our relationship?" When he only made a face and pursed his lips, Mei smirked. "See?"

Eijun didn't want to think about his teammates interfering with their relationship.

Did Mei really think they would try to… break them up?

He squeezed his eyes shut, clenching his fists.

… No.

His teammates wouldn't do that.

Wouldn't go that far.

(… Right?)

"Hey."

He opened his eyes at Mei's soft voice, almost wincing at his concerned look.

"Don't think about things like that right now, okay?" Mei kissed his forehead, letting his lips linger for a few moments. "You can't control how they act or feel."

He clenched his fists tighter. "But…"

"No buts." Mei unclenched his hands, kissing the top of his left hand, causing him to flush. "I'll always be with you. No matter what."

He squeezed his hand gently, moving closer to him. "I won't let anyone interfere with our relationship."

"Me too." Mei moved closer, squeezing his hand. "We're staying together no matter what."

Eijun smiled softly. "No matter what," he agreed without hesitation, causing Mei to smile back at him.

Things will only get more difficult when his teammates learned about their relationship.

And not only that, but the spring tournament was also fast approaching.

Which meant they would be busy with baseball.

But he and Mei had promised not to let baseball affect their relationship.

So they would be alright.

Sure, he felt worried about how his teammates will react.

But he felt confident that no matter what happened, Mei will look out for him.

And he'll look out for Mei.

They won't let anyone interfere with their relationship.

Not even their teammates.

He hugged him, his smile still on his face as Mei hugged him back.

He kissed his shoulder before kissing his cheek, tightening his grip around him as Mei laughed softly.

This… wasn't a dream.

Mei was here.

With him.

Tomorrow, he'll have to go back to his team.

But tonight, all he wanted was to touch him.

Hold him.

And… know he was there.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Author Notes: I hope y'all enjoyed this fic.

Reviews/Favorites/Follows are appreciated.

Theaceijun wanted to see how Mei would comfort Eijun after Koushien. And I was planning on writing a fic about that. But when I got this plot bunny, I realized it made more sense to include the Mei comforting Eijun part into this fic. Thank you so much for the plot bunny, theaceijun!

That Eijun and Kunitomo interaction came out of the blue. But I really like how it came out. I don't know how much Mei or his teammates would tell Kunitomo about Eijun, but Kunitomo knows Mei. And he is Inashiro's coach. If one of his teammates hurt Eijun or made him uncomfortable in some way, I feel like he'd want to know about that. I might include more of their interactions into my future fics.

Speaking of future fics… I already know what my next fic will be about. My next fic will be about Ryousuke finding out about Eijun and Mei's relationship. And he'll find out in one of the worst ways possible 😉😉😉 I already feel bad for Eijun and Mei.

See y'all next time!
