As he finished reading the note, Cosmo felt several waves of emotions hitting him all at once. Initially, he felt excited that there was a baby growing inside him. He and Wanda finally managed to get what they wanted and could finally get ready to start a family of their own. But on the flipside, Cosmo felt his stomach twinge and his legs squirm. He also looked down at his stomach to see that it was starting to bulge slightly. He knew he had to tell her, but he didn't just want to tell her like it was no big deal.
Cosmo didn't know much about well..anything. But he did know that Wanda wasn't stupid. He didn't have too much time before his stomach really started to swell, so if he was going to surprise her, he was gonna have to do it soon.
What am I gonna do? Should I ask Timmy? No, he's not that good at keeping secrets., he thought to himself before noticing the calendar near his nightstand. It read June 12th, just 5 days until their anniversary...
Maybe I can tell her as her anniversary present? Eh maybe..is the 10,003rd anniversary the one with the lobsters? I really hope they don't pinch me like they did at that seafood joint
Cosmo felt his excitement surface again as he continued to rub his belly, almost wishing it could be born already. He imagined holding the small child in his arms, rocking them back and forth while feeding them. Something he could never do with a godchild. He had always wondered what it would be like to comfort a crying baby instead of being the baby that needed comforting.
Between the two of them, Cosmo always felt that Wanda was the strong one. She was very logical and knew how to solve problems while Cosmo would either be the cause of them, or too emotional to think straight. He felt that it was his duty as her husband to protect her, but throughout their marriage, it had been the other way around. Wanda knew he loved her, but to Cosmo it felt like he was too weak to do what most male fairies (or men in general) are capable of doing. The only two people he could think of that were even weaker than he was were Binky and his father. Heck, even Jorgen didn't pound his father like he would with most fairies since he felt like it was the same as punching a defenseless toddler.
Oh poof, dad! He probably wants to know what the doctor said. Should I call him or., Cosmo thought to himself, reaching towards his phone before stopping himself Eh, I should probably tell him in person. I wonder if Wanda would be willing to get lunch with me and my parents. Actually, no. I don't want her and Mama fighting in the middle of this. I guess I can surprise them then. I think Timmy still had school tomorrow.
Cosmo's thoughts were interrupted by a loud knock on the door, forcing Cosmo to quickly throw the letter under his pillow and lie down on the bed.
"How are you feeling, Cosmo?", Wanda asked, placing her wand on the nightstand.
"A bit better. I didn't throw up in the bathroom this time!"
"Uh..that's good I guess. Gross but good.", Wanda said, lying down next to him, "Timmy can be such a handful sometimes."
"Why? What's wrong?"
"Nothing. He just asked for a bunch of dumb wishes this evening. Like, we just got back from snowboarding and he asked for a chocolate snowboard."
"You guys went snowboarding? I wanted to come!", Cosmo whined while Wanda stoked his cheek.
"Not when you're sick, sweetie. I wouldn't want anything bad happening to you."
"W-what do you mean? I'm magic too! I could handle it."
"I'm sure you could but I would prefer you get better first. I'm sure Timmy feels the same."
"Aww. You're no fun."
"It's for your own good, Cosmo. Trust me", she said, kissing his cheek.
"Oh, speaking of fun. I'm thinking of seeing my parents for lunch if you wanted to jo-"
"No"
"Fair enough", he sighed, lying back down on his side of the bed. "I won't be too long I promise. I just need to talk to them about a few things."
"Really? Like what?"
"I..uh.." Nice on idiot. She's on to you now. "I needed to ask my mama about uh..my taxes! Yeah, she's really good at taxes. She's loaded."
"You could just take them to a bank."
"I know, but it's been a bit since I last spoke to her and just thought it might be a good excuse to see her. Plus, I want to see if my dad is doing alright."
"Alright then, just be back before Timmy does. Are you feeling alright enough for it, though?"
"Yeah I think so. I stopped throwing up, didn't it?"
"Alright alright, I'm just making sure. Wouldn't want Mama Cosma all over me about poisoning you."
"Haha yea.", Cosmo said, before a nervous feeling hit his stomach once more. Now that he was pregnant with Wanda's baby, how was his mom gonna react? She loved him but hated Wanda, so having a baby that's half of her? He knew his dad would love the child, no questions asked, but his mom was a bit more selective with who Cosmo chose to associate himself with. But his mother had the right to know; she would be the child's grandmother after all. If she didn't want anything to do with the child, then fine but Cosmo felt like both his parents needed to know.
The couple stayed up a bit later to watch TV and occasionally poof to see if Timmy had any last requests before bedtime, leaving Cosmo tossing and turning with excitement for the baby to come and nervousness at his parents' reactions.
The next morning, Cosmo was able to get back to his godparenting routine, though Wanda had still advised him to take it easy until he felt completely better. After he had gotten on the bus to go the school, Cosmo went back into the castle, getting ready to poof back up to Fairy World to see his parents. He threw on his usual white shirt and tie outfit before headed outside to tell Wanda bye before he poofed in front of a small, purple colored house that had a mailbox with 'Cosma' written on it.
He made his way to the front door, questioning whether or not to leave and come back later. He knew he had to tell them but wasn't sure if they would approve or if Mama Cosma would show up to their house later to kill Wanda. You never knew with her. Once day she could be in a fairly decent mood, the next thing she was screaming and cussing up a storm, one of the reasons why he left home other than to be with Wanda.
Cosmo rang the doorbell, silently praying that they weren't home so that he would at least have a valid excuse to put this off. But once he heard the door unlock, he knew he was too late.
"Cosmo! What a surprise! Wait, did you bring Wanda with you?", Mama Cosma's warmish voice snapped, glaring at Cosmo.
"No Mama. She couldn't come.", Cosmo said, rolling his eyes. Mama Cosma smiled.
"Well then, come inside! Make yourself at home again.", she said, shutting the door behind him, "Linnie! Cosmo's here! Why don't you be a dear and make us some lunch."
"Y-Yes dear.", his father answered timidly, before smiling gently at Cosmo, "How are you, Cosmo?"
"Good.", he answered, before getting engulfed by Mama Cosma's hugs.
"So, what brings you buy? Surely not to just see us. I..oh..", she frowned, giving Cosmo a sympathetic look, "Did you and Wanda have a fight? Don't worry. I've got you."
"No Mama. We're ok really. I just wanted to talk to you guys for a while.", Cosmo said, pushing himself away from his mother's grasp, ignoring her disappointed stare. "There's something I gotta tell you and I didn't want to just call."
"Well, I'm sure that can wait until lunch is ready. In the meantime, why don't you and I kick back and relax for a bit. Watch some news? Have a beer?"
"Already?", Cosmo asked, receiving a harsh glare from his mother, "Sorry Mama."
"It's my house Cosmo. I will drink when I please. Ugh, you sound just like your father sometimes.", she groaned, looking over at her husband, "Be quicker, would you?"
"Y-Yes dear. I'm sorry.", he squeaked, throwing something in the over. Cosmo watched him work as he and his mother sat down. Cosmo had sworn to himself that he would never allow his relationship with Wanda to boil down into a relationship like his parents had. Sometimes, Cosmo wondered why his father stayed with his mother now that he and his brother were grown and moved out. There was no more reason of him to stay, was there?
"Dad, do you need some help?"
"No baby. I'm almost done.", he said, setting the table and pouring water into glasses.
"Linnie, get me a beer would you? Cosmo dear, did you want one?"
"No Mama I'm ok", Cosmo said, making his way towards the table. As soon at the three sat down and Papa Cosma served the food, Mama Cosma cracked open the beer bottler, and slushed it down, barely coming for air.
"How have you been Cosmo? Are you feeling any better.", Papa Cosma asked, looking directly at Cosmo.
"Yeah. I've stopped vomiting after I called you."
"That's good. Did you make an appointment with Dr. Wandsworth?"
"Yeah. Actually, I already went.", Cosmo started, noticing his father's posture perk up a bit and a small smile on his face, "And I think I know why I got sick."
"And? Wait, you're not.."
"I'm pregnant"
As soon as Cosmo finished his last statement, his mother choked on her food while his father squealed in excitement, getting up and hugging Cosmo as hard as he could. This was the most he had seem his laugh and smile in a long time.
"Oh my goodness! Congratulations! You're a daddy! I-I'm going to be a grandpa!", he cheered, "Oh, can I babysit? I can't believe it. A baby! Oh my.."
"You're pregnant?", his mother asked, in a deeper, much more solemn voice that her husband. Cosmo nodded. "So you mean to tell me you're carrying a child that's half Wanda right now?"
"Honey, how far along are you? Did they say? When are you due?", Papa Cosma asked, speaking louder that his wife for once.
"September. I'm almost two weeks in."
"Oh! I think the baby's starting to pop out a little bit!", he squeaked, staring down at Cosmo's belly, "Can I feel it? Please?"
Cosmo pushed himself out of his chair a little bit and turned towards his father, who placed and rubbed his hands gently on his stomach, ignoring Mama Cosma's snippy ahems from across the table. His smile widened as he continued to rub Cosmo's belly, talking to it gently.
"Hi sweetheart. I'm your grandpa! Oh, I already love you so much", he whispered, making Cosmo blush a bit in embarrassment. He had always been the touchy feely type, especially when he was around small children and babies. His wife however was an entirely different story..
"Wait hang on. Before we get all excited,", Mama Cosma started, "So you're saying the child is Wanda's."
"Yes Mama"
"Does she know yet?"
"No Mama"
"I see", she growled, glaring at the belly, "You know, you could say the child isn't hers.."
"Wait what?", Cosmo said, his father also snapping his head back up in attention, "Why would I say that? The child is definitely Wanda's."
"Well dear, I'm just saying. If you want out of your relationship with her so bad, all you got to say is that the child isn't hers.", she said, shrugging, "I mean, come on. That's got to be why you're over here in the first place. You and Wanda had another one of your little fights."
"What? No! I just told you she couldn't come!"
"Uh huh..sure.."
"Nora honey, can't we just be happy about the baby? I-", Papa Cosma asked softly before his wife's glare made him jump slightly, "I-I'm sorry, but we're gonna be grandparents! Can't we just be happy for them? A-and I think the baby deserves to have grandparents that love and care about him or her."
"I do love and care for the baby! I just didn't want Cosmo to feel tied down now, that's all.", Mama Cosma shrugged, taking another sip of her beer, "Is it too much to ask that my baby boy is cared for?"
"N-No but I just don't think your idea is ok."
"Who asked you anyways?", she snapped, making him shrink back before looking at Cosmo, "Come on now, be honest with me. What's the real reason she's not here? Is the baby actually hers or are you trying to cover something up?"
"No! Mama! This baby is mine and Wanda's, and if you don't want to accept that, then I don't want you visiting me or the child!"
"No no please! I want to see the baby.", his father whined, "I've always wanted grandchildren, please."
"I didn't mean you, dad. I knew you did", Cosmo groaned, glaring back at his mother, "It's never enough for you, is it Mama?"
"What do you mean?"
"You want Wanda gone, even if it makes me unhappy. I know you two aren't exactly best friends, but you could at least try to make an effort."
"She's just not good enough for you, Cosmo. You deserve so much more that that."
"I don't want so much more. I want Wanda and now we are going to have a child together. I'm sorry but for once, you're just going to have to deal with it.", Cosmo snapped, getting up from the table and headed towards the door, "Thanks for the lunch but Timmy will be back at school in an hour and I promised my wife and the mother of my child that I would be back before then."
"Cosmo I-"
"Bye Mama."
