Chapter 15 – The Old Home Front – An Earth Perspective
Two Weeks Post-Departure:
General Landry felt helpless. After his people infected with the Lupus Virus fled Earth, he spent the next two weeks trying to get answers from his own government about why they would 'sell out' American Citizens to foreign powers. He never got answers. The closest he ever came was when he was told 'it was in the best interests of Earth'. He didn't believe it then even though he was eventually tasked with taking General O'Neill's place as Director of Homeworld Security.
Hank sent teams to look for the infected and to warn Earth's allies. But that warning fell on deaf ears. Earth was laughed at. The Free Jaffa were especially amused. The Tok'ra had shrugged and said that they were not affected. The remaining Tau'ri allies didn't really understand what Earth wanted, but would not go against the 'Heroes of the Tau'ri'.
Two weeks after the infected had left Earth, Washington DC was demanding more of his time. Hank had chosen to spend most of his time at the SGC until he could find a replacement for himself as base commander there. While he had looked at several commanders, his main limiter was that the Ori had killed off most of his most experienced off-world Colonels, since they were battleship captains. The SGC was unforgiving to the inexperienced. His best bet was to promote Colonel Steven Caldwell and do what he could from Washington DC as the new General learned how to operate in this galaxy. He knew from experience that the teams under Caldwell were the best.
Unfortunately, the Ori didn't wait for the new General Caldwell to settle in. They started a new campaign of terror across the galaxy almost as soon as the general pinned his stars. Their latest tactic was to use a battleship to overwhelm a planet's population and using Ori troops, to block off access to the Stargate. Then they would use the Prior to 'convert' the people to Origin. It took the Ori longer to convert a population, but it was brutal. Since battleships were a limited resource, and SG Teams couldn't fight the volume or troops transported on an Ori ship, the galaxy was slowly being lost to the Ori.
The infected were no longer a pressing issue. The Ori had to be stopped. General Hank Landry and General Steven Caldwell turned their attention towards the present threat presented by the Ori.

Six Months Post-Departure:
Something changed in the galaxy. It started with SG Teams coming back from trade worlds where the people were excitedly talking about how a planet had been freed from the attacking Ori. The SG Teams asked and was told that the Gen Lop killed the Prior and then all the Ori troops without losing a single person. Then they flew the Ori ship away and the people could resume their lives without the Ori.
General Caldwell decided that this story needed follow-up and he sent SG-2 to the newly freed planet. The people were welcoming and open to trade. They relayed the story of how the Gen Lop were sent by their old gods to eliminate the false gods of the Ori.
As SG-2 was told the story, the Gen Lop attacked the Ori during prayer when all of the villagers were down in 'prostration'. The village leader was quick to point out that the Gen Lop did this so that the people of the village would not be struck by the stray shots of the Ori warriors. The Gen Lop had sent a large dog into the village. This dog approached the Prior and bit the hand off his hand so it could steal his staff. Then the Gen Lop shot the Prior in the head. At that point, a loud voice told the villagers to 'stay down and pray to their old gods for thanks, because their old gods had heard their pleas for help and sent the Gen Lop to free the people from the false ones'.
SG-2 was told at that point the Ori troops began to shoot at shadows outside the village. While they shot, the Gen Lop killed the Ori troops one at a time until they finally appeared and fought with them. The villagers told of how the Gen Lop didn't seem to get injured. A few days later, the Ori ship flew off. The Gen Lop left the Ori weapons for the villagers to use against the Ori or anyone else who should attack the village.
This news was both very good and very frightening. Good because someone had taken on the Ori and defeated them. Frightening because they were completely unknown. Unknown agenda, unknown motivations, unknown reasons for getting involved. General Caldwell didn't like working with unknowns. He had enough of that in the Pegasus Galaxy with the Wraith.
General Caldwell tasked his teams ask everyone they met about the Gen Lop. Who are they? What do they want? What do the people think of them? This was not a group that the SGC had heard about before. He was interested in becoming allies with a group that could challenge the Ori and win a decisive battle, if their motivations were in the right place.

One Year Post-Departure:
As the months pass, General Caldwell heard more about the Gen Lop. The group seems to be coordinated and can operate on a large scale. However, generally they don't. They operated on a smaller scale. No one could tell the SGC how to contact this group. They are told that the group just knew when a planet is in trouble. Slowly, the worlds that the Ori had conquered were freed. Finally, his SG Teams went two months without word from the Ori or any sightings of a Prior.
Around this time, the latest battle cruiser, the Phoenix, was completed. It departed to find any remaining Ori battle ships. It found none. It had discovered the second Space-Gate was destroyed. It patrolled the planets that had been Ori controlled, only to discover that they have been freed of the Ori. For all his looking, General Caldwell's people cannot find the Ori in this galaxy any longer.
With the pressure of the Ori off, General Caldwell was now able to focus on the Lucian Alliance. He investigated trade worlds where the Lucian Alliance had operated in the past, only to find that the organization had been in hiding. Further investigation told them that the operations that had been coordinated by the Lucian Alliance are now gone and free trade had replaced the corrupt system that the Lucian Alliance had used.
Occasionally, the SGC heard rumors of various Goa'uld who had survived, only to arrive too late to do anything to help. The Goa'uld was dead. Any loyal Jaffa are also dead. While the not so loyal Jaffa are now in the hands of the Free Jaffa. Sometimes, the rumors centered around groups of rogue Jaffa. These groups disappeared too.
Finally, SG-2 came back with some news from one of the trade worlds about the Gen Lop.
"What have you got?" General Caldwell asked Colonel Ferretti.
Lou smiled, "I finally got news on the Gen Lop. We were talking to the folks in the market and happened across several folks from another planet. According to them, these Gen Lop people are guardians of the old gods. They can tell when you are lying and are fine with trading, but don't like to mingle with people."
Caldwell frowned, "Did they tell you how to find them?"
"No, they said that if anyone on their planet needed help to go to one of the trade worlds and tell everyone what you needed and why," Lou frowned. "That part didn't really make sense to me."
"So we can't contact them?" Caldwell asked.
"Not that I could make out. But it sounds like they have people on the trade worlds all the time," Lou pointed out helpfully.
"But we don't know who they are or how to get them to talk to us," General Caldwell sighed. "Do you think they are the ones responsible for getting rid of the Ori?"
Lou gave the General a considering look, "It's pure speculation, but yeah, I do."
General Caldwell nodded, "Then we need to know more about them. Get everything organized. I'm calling a briefing tomorrow with all the team leaders."
"Yes, Sir."
SG-SG-SG-SG-SG-SG-SG-SG-SG
The next morning, all the SG Team leaders currently on Earth gathered in the briefing room. Someone had helpfully put Gen Lop on the white board while Colonel Louis Ferretti had one slide with his very limited information on it on the screen. General Caldwell sat at the head of the table and tried to get his team leaders to brainstorm who this group of people were.
Strategically, they were a threat. They had the technology and manpower to eliminate the Ori from the galaxy. They destroyed a Space-Gate. Earth couldn't do that, even with the Asgard Core. Earth needed to know more about these people. Hopefully, make them allies.
Nyan had been spending the last 20 hours translating Ancient non-stop. He had been called down to the Control Room for some reason. His tired brain forgot that a meeting was going on in the briefing room. He slowly climbed the stairs carefully, his fatigue no longer blocked by translations. He blinked in confusion at the crowded room. He was too tired to go back, so he picked his way through the crowd of people in the briefing room.
When he made it to the white board, he stopped. His fatigue addled mind didn't register where he was. He just automatically went into translation mode, picked up a pen and started to write.
'Gen (add accent) Lop Lup = Wolf Clan'
'Gen'Lup'
Behind him, the room went silent as he worked. When he was done, he began to resume his journey to the door when the General stopped him.
"Nyan, what language is that?" Caldwell asked.
Nyan blinked, "Ancient."
Caldwell's eyes went wide. He was used to Ancient being in Ancient script, not sounded out. It wasn't spoken. Dead languages were not spoken aloud. "Are you sure?"
"Of course. It would be written different, but that is how you would sound it out. I have been correcting translations all day. Did I do something wrong?" Nyan asked, his fatigue addled brain trying to figure out what the problem was.
"No," Caldwell hurriedly replied. "You may have helped give us a huge clue."
"Oh, okay. I'm going to head to my quarters now." Nyan tiredly nodded and started again for the door. This time, no one stopped him.
General Caldwell looked out over his SG Team leaders. "Well then, it looks like we have a group that speaks Ancient as well as all of the other bullet points already mentioned."
Lou shook his head, "Um, not really." Lou stared at the translation of the name for a long time. "Didn't this group show up after we lost our infected people?"
Caldwell frowned, "Yes." Caldwell couldn't really see how that was relevant. The infected people were before his time as commander. While he had standing orders to look for them, the SGC had been too busy with the Ori to bother.
"That's it then," Lou exclaimed with excitement.
Several of the other SG Team leaders were nodding in agreement.
"What's 'it'?" Caldwell asked in confusion. Lou's extensive knowledge of the SGC and its history was one of the reasons Caldwell put up with him.
Lou chuckled, "It's 'OUR' people. SG-1 and General O'Neill and them. They have Dr Jackson. Dr Jackson can read Ancient. Why not use it? Got to hand it to Dr J. Hiding in plain sight."
Caldwell turned to his other SG Team leaders. LtCol Thompson shook his head. "They didn't have enough people."
Lou dismissed him, "General O'Neill would figure it out. Besides, they have Col. Carter. She can invent practically anything. She could damn well learn to fly an Ori ship."
Caldwell sighed and asked, "So how do we reach them?"
Lou winced, "I don't think they want to talk to us."
Caldwell looked around the room and every SG Team leader was nodding his head in agreement with that statement. "Why not?" They considered Earth home, right?
Maj Jacobs laid it out for him, "Because the US Government gave THEM and their FAMILIES to the IOC for permanent confinement and isolation to experiment on. They left Earth to avoid that."
General Caldwell gapped at her. That had happened while he was in the Pegasus Galaxy. No one at the SGC really wanted to talk about it. But thinking about it, it made the lack of trust the SGC personnel had in the IOC become crystal clear. The low morale of the SGC even more so. He had thought it was due to the loss of personnel. But now, it was clearly a distrust in the US Government and the IOC. He had not pursued the terminate order given by the US Government with his SG Teams. Mostly because the SGC was too busy with the Ori. Now, that order seemed vindictive, not protective.
Caldwell sighed, "Alright then, I am giving you new standing orders. You are to make contact, if you see any of our old SGC members, but don't push it. Let them be. All orders about the infected are rescinded as of now. Earth would still like to make an alliance with the Gen'Lup if possible, but on their terms. For now, this is speculation anyway. I'll send a report up to Landry. Dismissed."

Five Years Post-Departure:
General Caldwell had just spoken to the departing Tok'ra. Malak had been imbedded with the Tau'ri for two years helping with advances in technology. Now, he wanted to visit his host's home world one last time before he was ready to die. Tok'ra were dying out and only had about a dozen years left before the symbiotes were too old to continue. They were doing their best to pass their knowledge on to the Free Jaffa and the Tau'ri before they died out completely.
Luckily, there were no Goa'uld left. Every single one had disappeared, one by one. Rumors of battles from the locals, who claimed that the Gen'Lup took care of the problem. This freed up the Tok'ra to spend their last days enjoying the freedom that they fought so hard to grant the rest of the galaxy.
After General Caldwell's first year of Ori hardship, the Ori were gone. Again, there were reports of Ori battles, but no news where the Ori went. The Orisii was killed and her Priors were hunted down and exterminated one at a time. Any human believers were told about how the Ori were not gods and just insane ascended beings with a god complex. They could go back to worshiping their original gods or no one. Locals credit the Gen'Lup for protecting them from the 'scourge of more false gods'.
With the loss of the Ori and the Goa'uld, and even the Rogue Jaffa, trade conglomerates like the Lucian Alliance tried to take power only to fall to the Gen'Lup. The locals reported that the Gen'Lup don't like when 'bad men do bad things' across worlds.
For the first time, the Tau'ri are free to trade, explore, and experiment, but they have never come across the Gen'Lup group. The Tau'ri suspect that the Gen'Lup are their own members, but have no way of proving it. Locals only say that the Gen'Lup come to trade in small groups and never stay long. The Gen'Lup can smell lies and hunt evil. The Tok'ra have never worked with them, but have heard rumors about them as the goa'uld were being hunted down. The Free Jaffa Nation has also heard rumors, but cannot move fast enough to act on a problem before the Gen'Lup has already taken care of it and left. Both see the Gen'Lup as a potential friend, if they want it.
One day, SG-2 led by Ferretti come across the former SG-1 on a trade planet. Lou was astounded. He had guessed that the infected were out there doing some good, but to see them again was beyond what he had hoped for.
Jack looked younger. He looked like he did before he started to go through the Stargate. And Lou would know. He actually knew Jack back then.
Sam, Daniel and Vala looked like they had not aged a day since they had started to go through the Stargate. They all looked good. Very good. Lou had been off-world when the whole infected thing went down. It sat wrong with him. Now, seeing them again. He actually felt shame for his government.
Lou watched them from a distance. Jack, Sam, Daniel and Vala acted insular. They didn't interact with the others in the marketplace. They trade with no haggling. They merely demanded a specific price and the trader either agrees or not. The price was set to them. Ferretti observed that they acted normally when no one else was around them. At least, normal from what he could remember of them.
Finally he sighed and walked up to them, "Jack. Long time, no see"
Jack glanced at him and gave a put-out sigh, "Well, I guess it's about time we talked to you guys."
"Uh, okay." Lou was taken aback. Jack was different. He had always maintained a professional distance, but was approachable and friendly to his subordinates. It had made working for and with him so easy for so long. But now, he was totally unapproachable. He was treating Lou like a dreaded task that had to be done. Lou missed the old Jack. "You look good, Jack."
"Of course he does, Minion," Vala snapped. Lou didn't know the woman. He had only worked with her briefly when she was on SG-1. Apparently, her opinions had gotten shorter and more colorful with time.
"Vala," Daniel interrupted, "Lou isn't responsible for everyone on Earth."
"Humph," was her only curt reply to Daniel's reasoned interjection.
Jack gently shook his head at the pair before regarding Lou again, "Thanks. I wish I could say the same for you, though the Eagles look good on your shoulders. Belated felicitations and all that."
"Thank you, sir," Lou replied with a genuine grin. "With you and Dr J gone, I was the last of the original team members left. General Caldwell bumped me up with some others to fill the void left by the loss of so many from the Ori," he replied as his thoughts turned to those that were lost.
"Caldwell replaced Landry?" Jack asked him.
"Yes, sir. And Landry replaced you," Lou replied with a cheeky grin.
"Poor man," Jack said. "I wouldn't wish Washington DC on Ba'al. Okay, maybe I would. But he deserves the torture."
"Landry's done well there. He wouldn't let the IOC try to play their games again. Fried Representative Shen after you guys left," Lou continued. "But we really have wanted to talk to you guys. We suspect that you wiped out the Ori and the others around the galaxy. We want to bring you home. Can we talk about that?"
"No," Jack stated evenly.
"Hell, no," Sam continued. "Do they think we would forget what they tried to do to us? To our children?"
"The government is no longer the same. The IOC no longer has control. Gen Caldwell wasn't even in the galaxy when you were infected. Can we at least be allies?" Lou asked, pleading with who he considered his old friends. "Don't you remember what it was like before you were infected with the virus?"
Sam, Daniel, and Vala smirked.
Jack narrowed his eyes, he responded telepathically, 'I remember hiding who I am to avoid becoming a caged animal. I remember saving the ungrateful. I remember sacrificing everything I am, again and again, only to be used up and thrown away.'
Lou widened his eyes at hearing Jack's voice in his head. He was even more surprised at how bitter and tired Jack's voice was.
Then he continued aloud, "And I remember when my own people finally turned against me and my people. Yes, I remember what it was like before the final change. We will not go back to cower in the shadows. We have defeated your enemies. You have no need of us. Leave us alone. Do not start a hunt that we will finish."
Lou swallowed carefully as he digested the news he had been given.
"But take note," Sam finished, "We are watching Earth. ANY planet that takes ANY action against another for their own betterment will feel the wrath of the Gen'Lup."
Daniel continued, "For we are the messengers of the old gods. Do what you will on your own planet but trade fairly with others or suffer the wrath of the old gods."
"Earth already has an outpost in the Pegasus Galaxy and several bases off-world. If they try to colonize, then the colony will gain independence from Earth. Period. The outpost is to help Pegasus against the Wraith. Period." Jack gave Lou a very unsettling smirk, "What Earth does and how it acts towards its neighbors will determine if WE need to interfere or not. Know now that WE feel NO loyalty to Earth. Our obligations have ended with our leaving. Earth has officially been warned."
With that he gave Lou a have-assed salute and walked away with Sam, Vala, and Daniel in tow. Lou felt like he had just been dressed down for the entire planet. He gave out a long-shuddered breath. Time to get back and brief the General.

Sanctuary: c. 1340, "building set apart for holy worship," from Anglo-Fr. sentuarie, from . sainctuarie, from L.L. sanctuarium "a sacred place, shrine" (especially the Hebrew Holy of Holies; see sanctum), also "a private room," from L. sanctus "holy" (see saint). By medieval Church law, fugitives or debtors enjoyed immunity from arrest in churches, hence transf. sense of "immunity from punishment" (c. 1380). General (non-ecclesiastical) sense of "place of refuge or protection" is attested from 1568; as "land set aside for wild plants or animals to breed and live" it is recorded from 1879. Under English law, one claiming the right of sanctuary had 40 days to confess and accept permanent banishment. This was abolished in Britain 1625 in criminal cases, 1696, 1722 in civil cases.

Meropis (Ancient Greek: Μεροπίς) is a fictional island mentioned by ancient Greek writer Theopompus of Chios in his work "Philippica", which is only fragmentarily maintained via Ailianus.[1] It is situated beyond the world-ocean (Oceanus). Its inhabitants, the Méropes (poet. humans), are supposed to grow twice as tall as average human beings, as well as getting twice as old. Theopompos describes two cities on Meropis: Eusebes (Εὐσεβής, "Pious-town") and Machimos (Μάχιμος, "Fighting-town"). While the inhabitants of Eusebes are living in opulence getting neither hungry nor thick, the inhabitants of Machimos are in fact born with weapons and carry on wars steadily. A third place, called Anostos (Ἄνοστος, "Place of no return") is situated on the outermost border of Meropis. It resembles a yawning abyss, does not have day or night, and is covered by cloudy, red fumes.
The story of Meropis is neither a utopia nor a political allegory; it is a parody of Plato's Atlantis.[2] Theopompos somewhat overstates many of Plato's aspects of the Atlantis myth. While it is an Egyptian priest who is telling Solon the story of Atlantis according to Plato's Timaeus [3], it is an Ipotane (a mythical half-man half-horse creature) who is telling the Meropis story to king Midas according to Theopompus Philippica. Although Atlantis was incredibly big by Plato's account, Theopompus describes Meropis as even bigger, to make it completely absurd. And while the invading Atlanteans were beaten by Athens because of its perfect society, the Méropes - attacking with an army of ten million soldiers - attempt to conquer Hyperborea, but return in disgrace after realizing that the Hyperboreans were the luckiest people on earth and not worth looting.[4]
GERI and FREKI: wiki/Geri_and_Freki
In Norse mythology, Geri and Freki (also Gere and Freke) are a pair of wolves, companions of the god Odin. Freki and Geri are both translated as "Ravenous".
Snorri Sturluson in Gylfaginning indicates that it is to these wolves that Odin gives his food when in Valhöll, for he has no need of it himself, subsisting solely on wine. His source for this myth is stanza 19 of Grímnismál.

Going A-Víking: The phrase 'to go a Víking' meant to go on a voyage of discovery. In the Viking Age, going a-Víking was a chance to gain wealth. This wealth could mean material wealth such as valuable objects, land, property or a wife, but it could also mean spiritual wealth gained from being tested physically and emotionally, and gaining experience and knowledge. My main objective was to gain knowledge, experience and spiritual wealth from this journey, but I was not opposed to the material wealth if it should appear. Going a Viking was a life changing experience for Norsemen in the Viking Age. going-a-viking-1
