"Unscheduled off world activation!" Walter announced. Hammond hurried down from his office.
"No one is due back yet!" Hammond said.
"It's SG-1's signal, sir!" Walter said.
"Open the iris and get a medical team down here!" Hammond ordered as he hurried to the gate room.
"Medial team to the Stargate room!" Walter called through the intercom.
Hammond watched as Colonel Jack O'Neill stepped through the gate carrying something. No, it was someone. Daniel Jackson and Teal'c were right behind him. Hammond's stomach dropped when he saw the blonde hair. Hammond took a step closer. Major Samantha Carter's eyes were closed, but her face was frozen in a surprised, pained look, her mouth cracked open.
"My God!" Hammond gasped. The medical team hurried into the room.
"What happened?" Dr. Janet Fraiser hurried up to Major Carter.
"Major Carter was attacked after she had done a sweep of the area. She was hit with a staff blast in the back." Teal'c's voice was emotionless, but his face was full of anguish.
"Oh my God!" Janet echoed Hammond's words.
Major Samantha Carter was dead before her body had even hit the ground.
Colonel O'Neill hadn't said a word. He just stared at her until the medics carefully took her and placed her on the gurney. Daniel's eyes were red and puffy. Tears were running down his face, but he didn't seem to notice or care.
"Colonel?" Hammond asked firmly. He wanted answers.
"Their in shock, sir." Janet's voice shook.
"Get them to the infirmary!" Hammond ordered.
"The Tollan, sir! We have to contact the Tollan they can reach the Nox. They brought her back last time, sir!" Jack insisted. Like Teal'c Jack's voice was emotionless, but his brown eyes screamed for someone to help.
"That was when you were on the planet. They may not can bring her back now, Colonel." Hammond sighed.
"She's still warm, sir. Please, General, it's Carter. If the Tollans won't help, maybe the Tor'ka how to reach the Nox. At least they may know where a sarcophagus is." This time, Jack's voice cracked.
"I will see what I can do." Hammond said, becoming took Jack's arm.
Hammond felt sick. He had lost men and women under his command. He had known Sam Carter for many years. He had watched her grow from a young girl who chased her brother and dreamed of becoming an astronaut to becoming an incredibly smart military cadet then officer. Sam helped get the Stargate program running. He did not want to contact Jacob to inform him of the tragic news. Hammond wondered if Colonel O'Neill was right, would the Nox be able to bring Major Carter back. Hammond walked back into the control room.
"Walter, contact the Tor'ka and tell them that there has been an incident and Jacob Carter needs to come back to earth immediately. Also contact the Tollan and see if they can reach the Nox ask them to come as soon as possible." Hammond ordered.
Yes, sir!" Walter said as he began dialing the gate.
Janet had the medics take Sam's body into another room. Daniel had not spoken since they got back.
"Daniel, can you tell me what happened?" Janet squeezed his hand.
"The planet was quiet, and the people were nice. They had this machine that Sam was really excited about. They agreed to show us how it worked for supplies. It was all pretty normal." Daniel's voice caught in his throat.
"Then Jack and Teal'c heard a noise. They went to check it out. While they were gone, we heard more noises. Sam just walked out the door. I was watching her as she scanned right outside the door. She was in the door when BAM, the staff blast came through the door hitting her in the back!" Daniel hit the metal tray that held the sedative meant for him. Janet and the nurse jumped when the metal tray hit the floor with a bang. Jack looked up from his knees, that were pulled up to his chest, at the sound. Teal'c who whose face was filled with grief, stood stiffly next to O'Neill's bed, looked at the tray. Jack put his face back on his knees he couldn't stop the tears now.
"I'm going to give you something to help you sleep, Daniel." Janet rubbed Daniel's arm.
"I don't want to sleep right now, Janet, please!" Daniel's blue eyes bore in to her.
"OK, Daniel, but you have to sleep sometime soon." Janet nodded. Daniel nodded back, but looked away from her.
Jack couldn't believe she was gone. One minute she was smiling and excited about this machine in her Carter way. The next thing Daniel was kneeling down beside Sam with a hole in her back. He still couldn't get her once vibrant, beautiful blue eyes staring lifelessly at him when he turned her over out of his head. He never told her about the kiss. When they were looping for three months. He did that loop at least a dozen times, if not more. Now he couldn't tell her anything. If Hammond didn't try to reach the Nox, he would do it himself. They had to get her back. What would the world do without Carter. What would he do without Carter?
Janet couldn't confirm death on Sam, she was too close to Sam. She called in another doctor. What was she going to tell Cassie? That poor girl had been through so much and now to lose Sam was just going to be devastating. Colonel O'Neill made them promise not to do an autopsy. The hole in Sam's back, near her heart, caused death. Her death was quick, but the great loss felt by her family and friends wouldn't be. She watched with tear filled eyes as the doctor filled out the death certificate.
Jacob Carter showed up within the hour. He did not like the urgent message he received. His stomach dropped when she was not at the gate to greet him. Sam always came to greet him. Instead, a very sullen looking George Hammond stood at the bottom of the ramp.
"George, I got your message! Is Sam hurt? Where is she?" Jacob hurried up to him.
"Let's go talk in my office, Jacob." Hammond urged.
"No, take me to Sam!" Jacob said firmly.
"Let's go to my office first." Hammond said softly. Now Jacob was feeling panic as he followed George. Hammond shut the door behind them as they entered his office.
"About an hour ago, Major Carter's team came back through the gate ..." There was a knock on the door and Dr. Frasier walked in , her eyes red. She handed him the dreaded paper he never wanted to see concerning one of his people.
"How's Sam, Dr Fraiser?" Jacob asked quickly, before she could hurry out. Janet looked at Hammond.
"Jacob, they brought Major Carter back through the gate with a staff blast wound to the back. She was brought in DOA. I'm so sorry!" Hammond swallowed hard as Jacob sat down hard in a chair.
"I want to see her." Jacob whispered.
"Sure." Hammond walked out of the office with Janet and Jacob.
Jacob looked at the body of his only daughter. She was so pale. He just wanted to see her mother's blue eyes staring back at him one more time.
"Oh my Sammy!" Jacob cried as he kissed her forehead.
"Jacob, Colonel O'Neill wanted me to ask you if a sarcophagus could help, Major Carter?" Hammond asked.
Jacob's head lowered, and his eyes flashed.
"No, a sarcophagus would only help if it were used right after the death. I'm afraid there is nothing we can do but grieve for Samantha." Salmack answered even his voice was pained.
"Where is her team?" Jacob asked.
"The infirmary being treated for shock." Janet said.
Jacob marched out of the room. He wanted answers. He walked into the infirmary mad but froze at the sight in front of him. Jack was curled into a ball, mumbling to himself. Teal'c was now sitting in a chair between Jack and Daniel's bed. His head in his hands. Daniel's back was turned to everyone, but his shoulders were shaking. The men were broken.
"Jacob, did General Hammond ask you about the sarcophagus?" Jack got up from the bed, his eyes wide.
"I'm sorry, but a sarcophagus won't work for Sam now." Jacob soothed. He noticed Jack flinched at Sam's name.
"Have you heard from the Tollan or Nox yet?" Jack looked at Hammond.
"Not yet, Colonel." Hammond softly said.
"Maybe we can try the Asgard they might have something to help Carter or maybe they can reach the Nox for us." Jack said.
"Jack, Sam is gone. As heartbreaking as that is, she can't come back from this I'm sure it's been too late to do anything now." Jacob grabbed Jack by the shoulders to look him in the eyes.
"You're wrong the Nox brought us back once they can do it again. Carter wouldn't give up on us, so I'm not giving up on her until I try everything to get her back." Jack pushed Jacob away.
"Colonel, she is gone!" Janet sniffed.
Jack went and laid back down like he didn't hear her. Janet looked at Hammond.
"Teal'c why don't you go Kelno'reem. We don't want you to get sick." Janet walked over to Teal'c.
"I will not!" Teal'c insisted.
"Go on T. I will come get you if someone gets back to us." Jack turned to look at the Jaffa.
"Very well." Teal'c stood up. He stopped at Jacob, the normal stoic man's face still looked pained. Jacob nodded at the silent condolence. Teal'c left the infirmary.
In a white room.
Sam rubbed her eyes the light was really bright.
"Hi, Sammy!" a voice she hadn't heard in years said.
"Mom!" Sam gasped.
"You grew up into such a beautiful, smart woman." Her mom smiled.
"I'm dead then?" Sam asked.
"Yes, in away but you have friends in high places." Debra Carter said.
"What does that mean? What is going on?" Sam sat down on the white floor.
"I will explain in time. Thank you for giving your father a second chance. He deserved to meet his grandchildren. Salmack has done him some good." Debra smiled.
"I was shot in the back." Sam said, trying to figure out where she was.
"Yes, you were, but that wasn't exactly how it was suppose to be. That's why you are here. That is all I can tell you. You will have a choice to make." Debra offered.
"What choice?" Sam asked.
"You can come with me or go back to the boy band you are with." Debra chuckled.
"Teal'c on the drums, Daniel on bass and Jack the lead singer I can picture it clearly!" Sam laughed .
"Jack?" Debra asked.
"I mean Colonel O'Neill!" Sam blushed a little.
"You are part of something very special, sweetheart! More than even you know. You haven't even begun to discover what you will find." Debra smiled.
"Tell me!" Sam said excitedly.
"Have you already decided to stay? That is the only way I can tell you." Debra asked.
"I don't know normally I would I say go back but maybe I should stay maybe I'll be more help here." Sam pondered.
" You really think you do nothing where you are now?" Debra asked as she stroked Sam's hair.
"I didn't do anything right this mission." Sam shrugged.
"I told you it wasn't supposed to be like this. Let me show you in just a few hours you have been gone how your death has been received." Debra reached for Sam's hand. Sam took Debra's hand and stood up. They walked into a hall Debra led Sam to a door and motioned for Sam to go in the door. Sam walk into a room her dad was sitting a table. He was rubbing his face. Sam's cell phone was in his hand. He took a deep breath before putting the phone up to his ear.
"Hey Mark! It's dad I have some news about Sam. Could you please call Sam's phone as soon as you get a chance? Love you!" Jacob hung up the phone, hoping Mark couldn't hear the tears.
"My Sammy girl, I knew something could happen to you every time you stepped through the gate I just hoped it wouldn't. Tell your mom I miss her every day. I will miss you every day, baby girl." Jacob sobbed.
"Dad!" Sam reached for his hands, only for her hands to go through his. Jacob's head shot up.
"I should have warned you about touching. If you want to comfort them, be gentle." Debra put her hand gently on Jacob's shoulder as he started to cry again.
"He feels me but its not as startling as a hand grab." Debra explained.
"You've done that to me?" Sam asked.
"I check on you guys from time to time." Debra smiled. They walked out that door and into another. Janet was sitting at her desk, holding a picture of Sam and Cassie. It was a picture of Sam and Janet kissing Cassie on the cheek. The teenager tried to look annoyed but ended up grinning.
"How am I supposed to tell Cassie? She loved Sam so much I love Sam so much." Janet whimpered to the empty room, touching the picture.
"I love you both so much too!" Sam gently touched Janet's arm.
"You have touched so many lives, including a child that lives because of you." Debra said. Sam shrugged and went out the door. They entered another door. Walter and some other people from the gate room were sitting at a table having coffee.
"How many times has Major Carter fixed a problem with the gate that no one else has spotted. What are we going to do when the gate malfunctions?" Walter frowned.
"Someone else might fix it, but it might be too late. Major Carter worked best under pressure." A technician said. The others agreed. Suddenly, someone appeared in the room with them.
"Who's that?" Sam asked, surprised.
"I want to show you what your team looks but we have to be quick." Debra grabbed Sam's hand. Sam was pulled out of the room and into another door. Jack was sitting on the edge of the bed. Daniel was asleep, but he was tossing and turning.
"Sam, don't go out the door." Daniel whimpered.
"Daniel, wake up." Jack said listlessly.
"Sam, please come back, don't go!" Daniel's voice rose as he twisted in his sleep.
"Danny, awake up!" Jack stood up from the bed.
"SAM! NOOOO!" Daniel screamed, sitting up.
"Daniel, wake up! You're safe!" Jack sat on Daniel's bed. Daniel began to cry.
"I begged her not to go out the door, Jack! She said everything was going to be fine, but it's not she's dead!" Daniel cried.
"You can't stop Carter when she wants to do something. The only one at fault is the Jaffa that shot her and Teal'c shot him, so he is gone." Jack soothed.
"Do you really think the Nox can bring Sam back?" Daniel sat up.
"Absolutely! They have done it before. If they can't then we will find someone who will. There is no SG-1 without Carter." Jack was determined.
"That's what we are worried about. The choices your team will make if you're not with them." Debra frowned.
"Who?" Sam asked.
"I can't tell you, but you must make your choice soon. You are loved and respected here but you will also be loved if you come with me." Debra offered. As they headed out of the infirmary, the alarms went off. Sam went to the control room.
"Sir, it is the Tollan!" Walter said.
"Open the iris!" Hammond ordered he was surprised they answered back. Narim and Lya walked through the gate.
"General Hammond, we received your message! I apologize for the delayed response I finally convinced the Curia to contact the Nox. Something has happened to Samantha?" Narim asked. Lya looked right at Sam.
"I'm afraid so. I will show you. Colonel O'Neill hopes Lya will be able to help us." Hammond urged them towards the hall. They took Lya and Narim to Sam's body. Narim paled.
"What happened?" Narim asked softly.
"A staff blast hit Sam in the back." Hammond explained.
"They were ambushed?" Lya asked.
"Yes!" Hammond nodded.
Lya put her hand on Sam's head and let the other hand linger over Sam's belly.
"We will need to get her to my planet, Gaia, quickly. Even then it maybe to late but we will try." Lya nodded.
"Of course, thank you! I will have SG-1 meet you down there!" Hammond hurried out of the room.
Janet quickly unlocked the gurney so that they could move it. Narim helped Janet move the gurney.
"What is your choice, my Sammy? Debra asked, looking at Sam.
"Will I remember any of this?" Sam asked.
"No." Debra said.
"I belong with my team." Sam nodded.
"Then follow them." Debra said, then kissed Sam on the cheek before disappearing.
Jack, Daniel and Teal'c were at the gate with Jacob. Lya opened the gate and Jack scooped Sam off the gurney and hurried through the gate. The others followed. The Nox preformed Ritual of life on Sam as soon they arrived. They were waiting outside when Lya walked out of the tent.
"We will have to wait!" Lya said.
It was a couple of hours later when Sam walked out of the tent.
"Sir? What am doing here?" Sam asked, very confused.
"Sammy!" Jacob gasped as he hugged her.
"What is going on?" Sam asked again.
"We are very pleased to see you, Major Carter! You were dead and the Nox brought you back!" Teal'c actually smiled.
"Wow, I'm going to need more information!" Sam said.
"Sure Carter, come sit down." Jack patted the log beside him grinning!
