The next few weeks were pretty busy for Lorelai. Between work and helping Aaron keep an eye on Rachel and Jack when he was visiting, she hadn't much chance to think about anything else. Aaron had finally found a home he thought was ideal for the family. He decided to bring the three of them there before he decided. Technically he didn't need their opinions, but he decided considering all three of them had their lives change drastically in the last year he thought it might help them with another change if they were included in the decision.
He pulled up to the house with the three of them one evening after dinner, telling them that he thought it was a good fit for them all, but he was curious what they all thought. They all went inside where the real estate agent was.
The three of them were told to look around but to not touch anything. Lorelai took Jack's hand and walked around with him.
They had come in at the front door into a small foyer that had a set of stairs going upstairs a small coat closet and a powder room at the top of it. To the left of the foyer was a decent sized living room to the right was similar sized dining room. The dining room sat below a kitchen with a breakfast nook area a good-sized pantry and the small laundry room was just off the breakfast nook. Outside to the back was a large deck. Lorelai thought about how they could have nice BBQ's out there with the team. To the left of the kitchen was the family room which was quite spacious and had a fireplace. The family room was attached to the living room; the main floor was kind of one big circle. Lorelai thought it was very nice. She looked down at Jack who was pulling her towards the stairs. "You want to see the upstairs huh?" She smiled.
Jack nodded. "I want to see my room!" He said. Lorelai assumed that meant he had already decided he liked the house.
"Okay." She said heading to the stairs. "But we don't know for sure that dad will get the house. Sometimes even if you want the house someone else will offer more money for it and they will get the house. We can go see what your room might be." She told him
Aaron heard the conversation and was a little surprised by Lorelai referring to him as dad. Usually, she would say your dad when talking to Jack. He was completely okay with it either way, but he wasn't going to call attention to it. Maybe she misspoke and even if she hadn't, he didn't want her to feel uncomfortable and stop.
Lorelai took her little brother upstairs. They saw the large bedroom with its own large bathroom and double closets. Lorelai told him that would be dad's room. Then there were three other bedrooms that were each slightly smaller than the last. One of those bedrooms had a small bathroom of its own the other two bedroom had a small bathroom in the hallway across from their doors. They saw Rachel in the smallest of the rooms looking out the back windows.
"Hey. You like it?" Lorelai asked her. Rachel nodded. "It's a nicer home than I have ever lived in."
Lorelai smiled. "Me too. Its about the same size as the old foster home but its in much better condition." She said
Rachel nodded. "Would I have my own room?"
Lorelai nodded. "I think so. I mean you would have to ask Aaron, but I assume that is his plan there is enough rooms for each of us."
"This one could be mine." Rachel said softly.
Lorelai nodded. "Yes. It could be." She agreed.
Jack said he would get the biggest of the three bedrooms with its own bathroom. Lorelai had a feeling that wouldn't be what Aaron had in mind, but she didn't tell the boy that. She figured it was up to Aaron to burst his bubble not hers. She just told him maybe
Aaron went upstairs after a few minutes and asked them all what they thought. They all told him they liked it and Jack told him what room would be his. Aaron smiled at his son. "Actually, I saw this one as Lorelai's bedroom. She is the oldest she gets the biggest room and her own bathroom." He told his son. And he said he could have one of the other rooms and that it would be plenty of room for him. Jack nodded he understood he was okay with it.
Aaron went back to the real estate agent and said he would be putting an offer in and the two worked on it while the other three discussed the house and what their favorite rooms were and such. When Arron was done, they all went out to the car and started for home.
Jack asked if they could get ice cream and Aaron agreed going to an ice cream shop and getting them all a treat to celebrate. When they got home after all the excitement Aaron noticed Jack had fallen asleep in the car, so he took him out and carried him to his room while the girls started a movie in the living room.
When he was done, he went out to the kitchen and smiled at the girls laughing and bonding as sister. He was glad. He thought about Lorelai calling him dad and wondered if that meant she was open to the adoption. When they had talked about if a few weeks ago she hadn't said one way or the other. After the movie finished, he told Rachel to go get ready for bed and sat with Lorelai.
Rachel did as she was told. She was supposed to be starting at her new school the next day and knew she needed the sleep.
Arron looked at Lorelai. "I have a question for you."
Lorelai looked up at Aaron turning off the TV.
"We talked about my planning to adopt you. I realized I didn't ask if it was something you wanted." He told her.
"Oh." Lorelai said
"What is your opinion?" He asked her
Lorelai nodded. "Yes. I mean. I have to admit I never thought it was even an options. Now. I cant see not being here. With my little brother and my little sister." She said. "And I have never felt more secure." She admitted. "So yes. I would love to be officially adopted."
Aaron smiled and gave her a hug. "I will file the paperwork this week." He said.
Lorelai smiled and nodded. She was very happy. She couldn't believe this was actually happening. To be honest she was wondering… wondering when the other shoe would drop. What would keep this from happening. Nothing in her life ever worked out the way she wanted.
Aaron went and checked in on Rachel saying goodnight before grabbing himself a beer and winding down for the night. Lorelai got ready for bed as well and grabbed her sketch pad and her charcoal pencils and sitting down in a chair in the living room and sketching a picture of Jack and Aaron that she had taken a few months before when they were at the park.
Aaron saw his daughter and smiled. He knew she didn't share her art, but she always seems to really enjoy when she was drawing whatever she was working on. After awhile he looked over at her. "Shouldn't you be heading to bed soon?" He asked her. They had discussed early on that she didn't have a 'bedtime' so to speak but it was getting late.
Lorelai looked up from her paper and smirked. "Are you trying to send me to bed?" She asked
Aaron chuckled. "I'm sorry. It's getting late. You have an early appointment." He reminded her
Lorelai looked back down at her paper and rolled her eyes. He had really been getting on her about her weekly appointments. "I'll be fine." She said
Aaron raised an eyebrow. "I saw that Lorelai." He said.
Lorelai sighed and closed her sketchbook. "Sorry." She said
Aaron nodded. "Don't do it again."
Lorelai nodded. "Yes Sir."
"I am heading to bed. I suggest you do the same." He said as he got up. "Goodnight." He said
Lorelai nodded. "Goodnight. Dad." She said quietly
Aaron smiled as he headed off to his bedroom.
Lorelai smiled and headed to bed as well.
