Chapter 2
"Minji , dami and dongie haven't been to work in three days , we haven't heard anything from them! Their podcast has been streaming in silence since Saturday night! I'm telling you, something is wrong here"
Minji, captain and lead detective of the 13th precinct in daejeon sat at her desk with her head in her hands, her perfectly manicured fingernails glinting in the bright white light from the ceiling . She had worked with the couple for 5 years now and they had never even been late before, let alone not showing up or answering phone calls. Honestly it was a wonder they hadn't checked up on them before this. Minji lifted her head to look at siyeon.
"Siy , I think you're right. Why don't we go to their apartment and have a look around. We'll take bora as well since she needs the training"
Lee siyeon had been her best friend and colleague since grade school , they had worked every summer job in their teens with one another and studied at the police academy together. Needless to say they were partners in crime ( just without the crime , they were police detectives after all) and when one of them had a hunch , they worked together to solve it.
The ride to handong and dami's apartment had been tense , all three of them had a bad feeling about what they would find , so when they got to the apartment and found nothing but an unlocked door they were at a loss of what to do.
After staring blankly at the open door infront of them for what must've been five minutes, minji finally gave the other two some orders.
" bora, you check the windows and see if you can find any signs of forced entry. siyeon , check for any bloodstains and other suspicious marks. I'm going to check their podcast equipment and see if anyone is still on their stream"
Minji rushed over to the table and noticed that besides the stream equipment , it was bare. This was the first red flag of many , since the pair always had files out for their case studies. She sat at the open laptop and put in the password dongie had shared with her a couple months prior , to see the chat still running with worried fans. She found the comment section and began to type.
'Hi guys , this is lead detective Kim Minji. I'm so sorry , we can't make a statement on what happened to dami and handong yet even though I know you're all worried.. I just wondered if anyone here saw or heard anything before they disappeared?'
Almost instantly the chat was flooded with comments, all saying similar things. There was a loud knock, then another. Dami left to go see who it was , there was a loud thud, so dongie went to investigate. There was another loud thud , some rustling and then silence.
Minji typed some reassurances and thankyou's into the chat, all the while thinking about how this did NOT sound good. She was soon interrupted from her loud thoughts by Detective Lee, who had apparently found something.
With both minji and bora gathered around, she pointed to a weird stain on the floor in the main hallway , it looked rusty almost , but was quite faint. She pulled out some hydrogen peroxide that she had fetched from the bathroom and poured it onto the stain , which bubbled ominously.
"Blood, and alot of it by the looks of it. Someone clearly tried to clean it but they didn't do too great"
They all looked at eachother with solemn faces. Bloodstains this large never ended well... they'd seen enough in their careers to know that at least.
After some more investigation, which ended up in them finding three of handongs bright red hairs and a singular sealed letter. Minji tucked it in her pocket to read later , thinking that it was likely to be one of the notes that dami left for dongie ( as she found writing so much easier than talking about her feelings. ) they decided to call it quits and declare the apartment an active crime scene.
Just before they left however, they heard a large crash. Minji got her taser out of her back pocket and ran to where the noise had come from , with siy watching the door and bora right behind her. When they reached the living room, they saw a smashed vase on the floor. Dongie hated that vase with a passion, so she wasn't upset to see it broken but neither of them could see any reason that it would have fallen off the shelf like that. Another thump. They turned to see a book that had fallen off the coffee table.
"this is odd.. i can't see how this is happening, can you sua? "
"Actually about that minji-"
"I've never seen anything like this before, have you?"
"Uhhh, minji???"
"How did that book get all the way over th-"
"DETECTIVE KIM!"
Minji turned to look at sua in shock.
"You better have a good reason for shouting at a superior officer like that , Jr detective Kim, or so help me god i will-"
Bora gulped and looked at minji , nervous but still determined to be listened to.
"Actually , miss Kim, I do. I know you aren't going to believe me , but i may have left out a particular talent of mine... you see i don't know how I'm gonna explain this but-"
"Spit it out , bora"
"See I can communicate with the dead , and it appears that is what we're dealing with here"
Minji looked at bora for a second, noting her completely serious face before bursting out laughing. She had heard alot in her line of work and had even contacted well known mediums for tricky cases in the past with no results , but this ... this was a new level of insane!
"See , I knew you'd think i was insane minji , but i think this might be dami and handong! It sure sounds like them , they're currently having a row over how two detectives managed to get murdered in such a lame fashion...I think handong mentioned a baseball bat?"
"You're right, you're insane.. come back to me when you have something useful to add to this case and not a moment sooner. And right now it's lead detective Kim to you"
Minji got halfway to the front door before she heard bora shout again, but what she said this time stopped her in her tracks.
"A BLUE BLANKET!!!"
Minji turned to look at bora.
"A what?"
"Dami says you gave her a fluffy blue blanket as a Christmas present the first year you met her , she says you noticed her admiring it in a shop when you were investigating the Park massacre case that year and so you bought it as a gift"
Minji stared at her
"Handong says you were the first person she told about her and yubins relationship back in their second year working in your precinct , and that you gave her a hug and said it was about time , and that they'd been mooning over eachother for long enough"
"How did you know that??"
Even minji had to admit that there was absolutely no way bora could know all of this, she had only joined daejeons 13th precinct a year before hand , so there was no way she'd know about yubins blue blanket , or her real name for that matter! She always went by dami as there was another Lee yubin in their precinct that worked as a standard officer, so she had decided to make a new name for herself to avoid the confusion.
"Okay , say you can talk to ghosts and you are talking to them right now, that means they're ghosts!? They're actually dead? What did you mean by a baseball bat?? SIYEON, COME OUT FROM BEHIND THAT DOOR I KNOW YOU'RE LISTENING"
Siyeon walked into the room looking sheepish , and Bora looked shocked that minji had believed her without a massive fuss, but she decided rather than focus on said shock , she thought it might be best to explain what had happened to her superiors.
" dami went to answer the knock at the door thinking you might have had a breakthrough on the daejeon velvets murders , she saw two masked women dressed in jumpsuits who promptly knocked her out with a metal baseball bat.. handong went to see what had happened and the women knocked her out too. She says she's embarrassed about how easily they were taken out, and that the two women dragged them out to their van to finish the job before cleaning up. Also they said the letter you picked up was left by them so you should read it , and that the two women took nothing but the velvet case files on the table"
Minji looked over at siyeon , both of the girls sad to have lost their best friends, wondering how they were going to tell yoohyeon , gahyeon, wendy and joy about the loss of their close colleagues.
