"I spoke to the lawyer. Things just got more complicated." Carlisle let's out a heavy sigh. He drops his cellphone on the bed and then plops down next to it. Esme pats the space next to her in bed. After the long day, both are exhausted and ready for a good nights sleep.

"Come lay with me, honey." She suggests in a sleepy voice. With the news he just received heavy on his mind, he moves slowly next to her. Esme drapes her arm over him and presses her body against him.

"Esme, this isn't good."

"What is it, dear?"

"They gave her a medical exam. Remember how they wanted to compare the DNA found on Maria to Jasper's to prove they had sex?"

"Hmmm."

"They have something bigger to test. Maria is pregnant."

"What?" Esme sits up, her eyes wide and her body now fully awake. "No. That can't be right."

"It is, Esme. She's pregnant. About three months along."

"Jasper's been with us for three months."

"If it's his, conception would have been only a few days before they were removed."

"Do they know it's Jasper's? She had pictures of other boys on her phone. Maybe it belongs to one of them."

"I don't know, Esme. Maria admitted to sleeping with another boy around the conception date." Carlisle sighs again. "The lawyer is going to try to get an in uterro DNA test ordered, but he said it's difficult to get if the mother doesn't agree to it. We may have to wait for the baby to be born to find out."

"Oh, Carlisle." Esme takes a deep inhale before laying back down next to her husband. "How will we tell Jasper?"

"I'll talk to him about it tomorrow."

"What if it is his?" Esme continues to question. "Will Maria have rights to it? Will it go straight into the foster care system?"

"It depend on how the trail goes."

"He's sixteen. He's still a child himself. He can't take care of a baby."

"Hey, buddy. What are you up to today?" Carlisle asks Jasper.

"Nothing, I guess, since I'm suspended." Jasper mumbles. He eyes Carlisle and tries to figure out his odd demeanor. Carlisle watches him back, wanting to take in everything about Jasper. The boy has been through so much, and is about to be faced with even more.

"How about the two of us go for a drive?"

"A drive?" Jasper questions.

"Yeah, a drive. We need to have a talk."

"Why do we have to go for a drive to talk?"

"Because it's important, Jasper."

With a heavy sigh, Jasper rises from the couch and stretches his arms out to the side before looking down and his black sweatpants and old t-shirt

"Where are we going? Should I change out of my sweatpants?"

"No, you're dressed fine. Just grab your and let's go."

"What do we need to talk about?"

"Come on, let's go." Carlisle instructs, igniting Jasper's question.

Jasper shoved his hands in his pocket and follows Carlisle out of the living room. Without another word amongst each other, the duo grab their coats from the closet, pull on their shoes, and head to the car. They settle into their seats and stay silent as Carlisle starts the car and pulls out of the garage. Jasper cranks up the heat and turns on the radio.

Carlisle drives twelve miles in the snowy roads before he finally speaks.

"Esme and I met when she was thirteen and I was fourteen." He says gravely. He grips the steering wheel as tightly as possible. "And a year later, she ended up pregnant."

"Really?" Jasper asks.

"Yeah. Esme was fourteen, I just turned fifteen. I can still see the terrified look on her face when she told me."

"You've never told me this before."

"Because we lost the baby." Carlisle explains. He sucks in a shallow breath before continuing. "And we were scared, and we were young, and we didn't have a good support system to help us out."

"What about Vanessa and Robert?"

"They were very angry with me. They swore they would help us, but they kept going with their snide remarks about it. Esme's parents were furious. Esme was two months along when we lost the baby."

"I'm sorry, Carlisle." Jasper says meekly, Unsure of what to say.

"I wonder what would have happened if the baby lived. I probably wouldn't be a doctor. Esme would probably have to work as well. We probably wouldn't have raised Emmett, gotten into fostering, never met you and Rosalie, and who knows if Edward would have been born. We wouldn't be living in the home we are in today. Things would have been so different. But I wouldn't wish a miscarriage on my worst enemy." Carlisle explains, hoping Jasper is letting it all sink in. "I missed out on my first chance to be a father, and that is something that weighs on my mind constantly. If the baby was a boy, his name would be Samual. Samantha for a girl. We didn't know the gender, so we called the baby Sammy. The worst part is that I never got to know what Sammy would be like. I don't know what Sammy would look like, sound like, act like. I never got to hold Sammy or say I love you. Esme didn't even get to hold her first child. We missed out on so much."

Carlisle lets out a heavy sigh as he reminisces over the tragic time. A few more miles are driven before Carlisle continues.

"Jasper, I got a call from the lawyer. Maria is pregnant." Carlisle finally forces out. As soon as the words hit Jasper, his head snaps towards Carlisle.

"What?" He demands. "She's pregnant?"

"Yes, Jasper." Carlisle sighs. "But she admitted to sleeping with someone else around the conception date. We don't know if the baby is yours or not."

"No," Jasper shakes his head and puts on a harsh look. "No, that can't be right."

Carlisle sighs and for just a moment, takes his eyes from the road and glances at Jasper.

"It can't be right that she can't be pregnant? Or that she slept with someone else?" He asks.

Jasper doesn't answer. He simply sinks down deeper in his seat.

"The lawyer will try to get a paternity test ordered, but he said to rare for a judge to order a utero paternity test. We may have to wait until the baby is born." Carlisle explains. "But I want you to understand that Esme and I will be right behind you for every step of the way."

Jasper just gives a slight nod.

"Don't worry, buddy. We are here for you."
