AN: You all probably think I'm a loser with the speed at which I update. Oh well, I can live with it

She spotted Lexie hovering by the first floor nurses' station. "Lexie!" Meredith called, crossing the lobby in long strides. Her sister glanced up from a chart she was filling out. "Whose service are you on?"

"Bailey's," Lexie said, perplexed. "What are you -"

"You're on mine now," Meredith interrupted, shoving Pam's files into Lexie's arms. "Pam Wood is in room 2160. She's part of me and Derek's trial."

Lexie flicked through the file, and her eyes widened when she reached the last page. "She's pregnant?"

"No she's not," Meredith said dismissively. Lexie's mouth opened in confusion, but Meredith batted her down. "It's a long story, Lex. She needs a pre op CT, ok?"

"Fine," Lexie said, nodding confusedly. Meredith watched as she disappeared into the elevator and took a breath, sagging against the nurses station. What she needed was an on call room. Maybe one with Derek Shepherd in it.

Just then she spotted a familiar face in the waiting area. Fiona, Pam's sister, was sitting alone, rubbing a hand over the significant bump in her belly. Against her better judgement, Meredith approached her.

Fiona looked up and smiled. "Hi, Dr. Grey."

"Call me Meredith," Meredith said, sitting down beside her.

"Meredith," Fiona said softly. She stared down at her hands, resting over her navel. Suddenly she looked up. "Is my sister going to die?"

Meredith hesitated, torn between honesty and sugar coating. "We're going to do everything we can to make sure that she doesn't," she said hoarsely. Attempting to change the subject, she smiled softly. "I heard its a girl."

Fiona grinned. "Yeah. We found out a couple weeks ago." she paused for a moment. "I thought they were crazy, you know. They came up to me and offered me thirty thousand dollars to have their baby. And Pam had a brain tumor." she laughed incredulously. "And I said yes."

"I think it's amazing," Meredith admitted.

Fiona glanced at her sideways, calculating. "Do you have any kids?"

Meredith shook her head. "No. But i want to." It was the first time she had admitted this to a stranger. She realized that she meant it, though. Someday she planned on having children. It was like she had been free falling and had finally found a ledge to grab onto.

"I already have two. I never thought I would be pregnant again," Fiona said, and Meredith laughed at the utter difference in their situations.

Meredith found herself smiling. "Pregnancy is amazing, though." she glanced up at Fiona. "There's an entire life inside of you right now."

Fiona shrugged. "Yeah. Maybe she'll grow up and become a surgeon who cures terminal brain tumors," she said coyly.

Meredith grinned. "Maybe she will."

Suddenly Fiona groaned in pain, and Meredith jumped, startled. "Do you need me to-"

"No," Fiona said through gritted teeth. "She's fine. I'm fine. She's kicking."

"Oh," Meredith said, feeling stupid. She sat awkwardly while Fiona supported her back. "Does it hurt?"

Fiona scoffed. "I thought you were a doctor."

Meredith barked out a laugh. "Well, so far I've spent most of my career as an army surgeon in Iraq. I don't have a lot of experience with pregnant women."

"Then her. Feel her kick," Fiona said, grabbing Meredith's hand and placing it against her stomach. Immediately, she could feel soft feet pressing against her palm.

She looked at Fiona in wonderment. "Oh my god."

Fiona grinned back at her, but their moment was interrupted by Derk, who cleared his throat as he approached.

Fiona's expression immediately darkened at his presence. "Dr. Shepherd." she regarded him nervously.

Derek nodded at her. "We're ready to bring Pam into the OR."

[]

"Alright, Dr. Grey. Completely in sync."

Meredith nodded rigidly, locking eyes with Derek as they injected the virus. She imagined a future with him. Waking up at 3am under the bright yellow comforter to feed their crying baby. They would be married. She would be a mother and a wife.

"Very good," Derek said calmly. Meredith glanced at the machine and saw that they had been successful - the virus had been injected into Pam's cerebrum simultaneously.

They stepped back from the table. The entire OR was silent, waiting with baited breath for something to go wrong. Ten seconds. Thirty. Nothing happened.

"Alright, Dr. Grey," Derek said, grinning at her from under his mask. "Why don't you close?"

"4-0 silk," Meredith said, holding out her hand to accept the sutures from the scrub nurse. She smiled over at Derek as she stepped forward to reattach the skull flap.

"We're standing on the moon, Dr. Shepherd."

It was past midnight when Pam's heart rate began to speed up. Meredith, who had been on the verge of falling asleep at her bedside, jerked awake immediately. She grabbed Derek's arm and shook it.

"Derek," she hissed. "Derek."

Fiona lifted her head off of Nate's shoulder, where she had fallen asleep. "Whasshappening?" she slurred. Her eyes widened in awareness when she saw Meredith and Derek. "Is she waking up?"

"Lets see," Derek said, removing the penlight from the pocket of his labcoat. Meredith watched as he pulled back Pam's eyelids and shone it on her pupils. "Equal and reactive," he murmured to himself.

"Oh my god," Meredith breathed in disbelief. "It worked."

Derek grinned triumphantly at her. "It worked."

She would have hugged him, if Fiona hadn't jumped out of her chair and grabbed her first. "Thank you," she muttered into the sleeve of Meredith's scrub top. "Thank you so much."

Meredith smiled at Derek over Fiona's shoulder. Fiona pulled away from Meredith and kneeled down beside her sister.

"Pam?" she whispered gently, running her fingers across her jawline. Nate stood and joined her on the tile floor. "Pam? Can you hear me?"

Pam's blinked heavily. "Mhmm?"

"Oh my god," Fiona choked. Tears leaked from the corners of her eyes.

"Pam, do you know where you are?" Meredith asked gently.

The corners of her lips turned up into a weak smile. "Not dead."

Derek grabbed Meredith's hand and squeezed it tightly.
