For Flash Fiction Friday prompt 112: Sunny Delight

John woke early, earlier than even Scott, which was saying something. Even at 13 Scott was often up with the sun while Virgil and John liked their lie-ins.

He immediately got up and opened the curtains. Damn, it was still dark! He needed to know what the weather was going to be, and he said a quick word to his Mom to grant him good weather.

Still, there was other things he needed to prepare, so John crept down the stairs, the last thing he wanted to do was to wake Alan – or even worse, Gordon – and have them interfering in his preparations.

As he entered the kitchen John got the shock of his life. Scott was already up, two back packs ready at his feet, and huge grin on his face.

'You remembered!' John practically bounced on the spot. He had honestly thought that Scott wouldn't, he had so much going on looking everything and everybody. As John saw the preparation Scott had already done his love for his brother surged, and he darted forward and threw his arms around his only oldest brother.

Scott was a little taken back, but he returned the hug. John's hugs were rare indeed, and although it didn't last long it was a real treasure. 'Of course I remembered, Johnny! You haven't stopped talking about how important today is!'

John chuckled. He certainly had been going on about it. 'Well, it's a once in every 375 years, Scott. I can't believe it's happening in my lifetime!' Scott just grinned at his brother. Space was what John lived and breathed, just as Scott lived and breathed flying.

They went through everything Scott had already packed for their day out, and John was delighted he had paid such close attention. Grandma was coming over before breakfast and they were then off, just the two of them, up to the hill where they would have the most exquisite view along with a picnic.

The picnic was wonderful. The day was a sunny delight, perfect for seeing a total eclipse of the sun. They had their special glasses, and as the sun disappeared behind the moon and the sky darkened and the birds stopped tweeting, John and Scott sat shoulder to shoulder, slightly shivering with the cool.

It was the most amazing thing John had ever seen.

The two brothers strolled home, full of the wonders of the day.

A day that created memories that would last a life time.
