"I can't understand how someone as crazy as your mother could create such a great person, but you're really a good guy Street. If I now still disregard that you flirt with every woman type thing." Chris had to laugh after her statement and Street smirked too, though he was about to protest.
"So come on, you can't put it like that with the digging. First of all, it's flirting and secondly, I only choose very special women." he winked at her and Chris was already uncomfortable again. She looked up at the sky to avoid answering, especially, what could she say to that? Street became serious again and looked at Chris.
"Did you come to Sarzo right after your mother died?" he wanted to know.
"Yes fortunately, I was spared a life as a foster child. Do you still have siblings?" Chris asked.
"Yes, well not by blood, but I have a foster brother, if you can put it that way, Nate is his name. He's older than me and a classy guy. Unfortunately, he also keeps getting mixed up with the wrong people and we've had some adventures together there." Street had a smile on his lips when he talked about Nate. He was kind of like the family he had left. "How are things going with Clark? Have you guys made up? So if you don't mind me asking?" Chris actually didn't know if she wanted Street to answer that, but why make a secret of it.
"Yeah, um, sort of." she stammered. Street tilted his head.
"Sort of?" he repeated. Chris didn't know how much she could tell him, but maybe it did her good to talk about it with someone on the outside.
"Yeah, he had cooked and apologized for his embarrassing performance. I don't know Street, but somehow I got a funny feeling. He's always on the phone when we're together and he always seems really tense and nervous. He wanted a guy's police file, I can't think of the name right now, but I wonder why. With the guy on the phone he was also talking about some important stuff, I couldn't hear anymore unfortunately. I don't know if I can trust him anymore and if there's a future with us." Chris looked sad at the last words. Street listened to her attentively and would so much like to help her.
"This sounds really weird what you're telling me. Could he be involved in crooked business? I mean, he's a cop, but don't they have dark secrets sometimes?" At those words, goosebumps came over Chris. What if Street was right?
"Let's change the subject please, I can't talk about it any further right now. I need to work this out with myself first." Chris admitted, looking unsure.
"It's okay, I don't want to put you in an uncomfortable position." Street smiled encouragingly at her. "Come on, let's walk along the beach a bit more with Champ." The two sat close to the water, every time a wave came, it reached their feet.
Street stood up and held out his hand to her. Chris looked at him skeptically, blinking one eye as she had to look against the sun.
"Come on, why are you hesitating?" Street was impatient and grinning. Chris wasn't even really on her feet yet when Street grabbed her and just pulled her into the ocean with him. She was so caught off guard that she couldn't really fight it. Before she knew it, the two of them were knee-deep in water and Champ was jumping around them, barking. Street burst out laughing, and Chris looked at him with narrowed eyes, playing with evil. She had to laugh, but inside she had guessed Street was up to something.
"I knew I couldn't trust you." she grinned.
"I didn't think it could hurt either of us to get a little cooling off. And look, Champ thinks it's great, too." Street looked over at Champ, who was chasing the waves a few feet away, and called him out.
"Champ! Hey kid, to me!" Then he tapped his thighs, too, and Champ didn't think twice about it, accepting the invitation and jumping against Street with his full weight. Now he lay there in the sea, soaking wet and to top it off Champ licked him across the face. Now it was Chris who started laughing and couldn't stop. She doubled over laughing and had tears in her eyes.
"Champ, you're the best!" she snorted. She snorted. "Street, revenge is sweet, I'd say. That serves you right." She tried to look a little more serious, which only caused her to laugh out loud again. Street stood up and made a pitying face.
"Yeah yeah, I had it coming, I get it. Champ, I thought we were friends?" he turned to the dog and the dog just looked at him with a feudal look.
Arriving at the car, Chris and Street dried off a bit, though it didn't really do Street any good. He unceremoniously took off his shirt and Chris caught herself daring a little peek at his naked torso. Street seemed to have noticed, but he didn't address it to her, just grinned. As the three were on their way to take Street home, Chris became a little more serious again.
"When will Ryan Parker be released from prison?" she looked over at Street, waiting for his answer.
"Um, so if I'm not mistaken I've been in freedom since yesterday. Why do you want to know?" with a questioning look, he looked at Chris. She tightened her grip on the wheel and tightened her jaw.
"Chris what's going on?" Street wanted to know. He could tell immediately that something was bothering her.
"Do you have to go undercover again now?" She looked at Street worriedly. He had absolutely not expected that question now.
"That's a good question. I still have my undercover phone with me, so far it's been quiet, but when I think about it, it could be real that the Cali Cartel will contact me again. They know how many months I was sentenced to." Street was almost muttering the last sentence under his breath, his mind racing.
"We've got to get them on this Street. It really sucks that they're always one step ahead of us. And just thinking about the mole on our team makes me sick. But that's a problem for tomorrow. Do you still want to come up for something to eat?" Chris didn't want to be alone right now and Street's company did her good, she couldn't deny that.
"Ehm yes, why not actually. Are there any of those yummy tortillas again?" He grinned now. "I even had a dream about them after the evening," he added. Chris had to grin.
"That's alright, you don't have to be so ingratiating, I'll make you some." She shook her head. Street was so pleased that he leaned over to the driver's seat and gave her a peck on the cheek. Chris looked at him and he too paused for a moment until they were interrupted by Champ. They looked to him in the back seat and he stood there wagging his tail.
"I guess you're hungry too." Was Street's comment to that and Chris stepped on the gas a little more.
Once in their apartment, Chris got right to work on the tortillas and Street and Champ made themselves comfortable on the couch. He cuddled the male behind the ear and Champ visibly enjoyed it. Street had a real crush on Champ, but it was the same the other way around.
"Dinner's ready!" Chris called from the kitchen and they both jumped up from the sofa and came running.
"Wow that smells wonderful again." Street lifted his nose in the air and Chris couldn't help but grin widely.
"What is?" came from him in confusion.
"You should see you and Champ. You're making one and the same face. I don't believe it."
"You're not seriously comparing me to your dog right now?" Street couldn't believe it. Chris just nodded and sat down at the set table. "Unbelievable... But let's get one thing straight, I have the nicer nose of the two of us." Street raised an eyebrow and looked down at Champ.
"So now I'm full, I might burst, but it was super tasty. Thanks Chris." Street smiled to her.
"You're welcome, thank you for a lovely afternoon. It was good to forget all the problems." Chris was about to clear the table when Street got between her and the dishwasher.
"Stop, that's my job now. You did the cooking and I'll do the dishes. Off to the sofa with you." Street directed Chris toward the sofa by grabbing her by both shoulders.
Chris had just turned on the TV when she heard Street talking. She turned the sound off because she thought he was talking to her. She was about to call out and ask what he had said when Street came up to her with a shocked face and put his finger in front of his mouth as a sign for her to be quiet. He had the phone on loud and when Chris heard the voice, she turned white as a sheet and shock was written all over her face.
