Somewhere in the country or the in the surrounding islands, a War Memorial museum exhibited an old letter that was thought to have been written by one of the fallen heroes of the Great War to his sweetheart. Evidences that were traced back support the information that the letter was handed down by one of the veterans of the Great War himself to his successor and probably there was another change of hands before it ended up in the museum. It was believed that the original veteran who had the letter served in the same army as the writer and fought by his side, but the actual story of the star-crossed lover still remained a mystery. The letter was as follows:

Ma Chérie Angelique

It is no more than a rather fanciful whim to believe that this letter will ever make it to you, but that shan't keep me from expressing myself on this scrap of paper. Ever since our first encounter, I discovered a strange susceptibility within myself, the kind of which I never knew existed. It did not take me long to realise that I was head-over-heels in love with you…I longed to declare it myself in your presence but somehow I never could. You inspired the man in me that yearned for a peaceful country-life with family. Perhaps we could achieve it. But as a soldier I made an oath to serve for my country and people. My moral conscience will never allow me to forsake my duty as a soldier, when it is required the most. I shall valiantly combat to keep the civilians safe and to restore peace. And as much as you wished for me to have left with you that morning, I can affirm that somewhere within your own consciousness you are prouder that I didn't. I can't think of much happier moments in my life than those we spent together. Pity that it did not last long. I will treasure those moments in the sanctuary of my heart forever, and whatever that may lie beyond. May you live a safe and prosperous life, always. If ever any thoughts of the wounded soldier you once cared for douse you with woe, find yourself in the open calm wilderness of a starry night sky - I want you to know that I will be watching over you in spirits, somewhere from the stars. And whenever you see a star streaking through the darkness, believe that it's a blazing embodiment of my most earnest supplication, falling from the heavens to let you know how much I love you… Always…Forever…And beyond.

Ton amour, Étoile Filante
