This is How it Works, It Feels a Little Worse

(Regina Spektor: One the Radio)

Wren still didn't know about Cath's surgery, and neither did their dad. She made sure they wouldn't know until she was ready. They worked it out so her bills would be sent to Levi's PO box in Lincoln. He insisted on paying for it anyway.
"It's my fault. I'll pay for it," he had said.
"No, it wasn't, Levi," Cath frowned. "I thought my implant was still working anyways."
Levi kissed her head, "still, we should've been more careful. I should have been more careful with you."
"I'm too tired for this, darling."
It took her a few days to remember that conversation, but it did happen, just before she went in for the procedure. That day was too long.

Everyday was too long. Levi would go to work, come home, then sleep. Cath just slept and slept, and if she thought she could manage to keep it down, she'd even have a bowl of cereal.

They were dysfunctional, but neither of them talked about it. They didn't want to. Cath just wanted the hurt to go away, physical and emotional. She didn't want to try again for another baby, but now that the option to be pregnant was taken away, she was genuinely considering it for the future.
