Chapter 4
Soon it was the next morning. Flynn ended up taking a watch all night. He did not mind it since he was able to collect his thoughts. Although he did end up falling asleep. The morning sun awoke him. Once he woke up he looked around noticing he fell asleep and announced that to himself. Seconds later he realized they were above land. He laughed in excitement. Though that didn't wake her.
"Great! Now we're on schedule." He crossed out the moon calendar. Now they only had one full day left.
Looking back at Meri his happiness soon faded. He decided not to bother with it and focused on the journey at hand. The Cotton Balloon was riding along the side of a mountain. He made sure to keep an eye out for the arch. It was a rather quiet and lonely feeling for him aside. He couldn't help but think everything was his fault. Not too long later Meri awoke and shot up sitting straight. She even called his name. She seemed to be out of breath. Flynn hummed, turning around.
"You, okay," He asked blandly, "We reached land." Flynn decided to still give her a cold treatment since she mistreated him horribly last night.
Meri soon caught her breath and held her head standing up, "I had a horrible nightmare." She walked over to him.
Flynn glared at her harshly and rolled his eyes humming in response. She then took a look at the compass before looking at the land around her. Meri gasped and laughed. "We did it! We're so close now. Maybe I should start putting back the scepter together." She thought placing her hand on her hip. "What do you think?"
The sparrow man shrugged, "Do what you want."
The words Meri said to him last night really put him down. It made him feel hopeless about his feelings. It made him feel so worthless even.
"Hey, what's this attitude? You had all night to cool off." Meri crossed her arms.
He breathed, "You think I could just forget what you said last night along with you almost losing my bag of pixie dust?" He asked, pointing at himself.
"Look I'm sorry about that-"
"All you ever say is I'm sorry to me! I'm tired of it." He grouched, rubbing his forehead.
Her eyes widened taking a few steps back. She lowered her head and turned around. Meri felt cold and empty inside. Maybe this will be it. "Look, after we fix the moonstone… you don't have to hang around me anymore unless we have to."
Flynn stiffened and looked over to her.
"I think it would be best if we don't be friends anymore after all of this. We've really fallen apart and we just need to focus on the task at hand now okay?" She slowly turned around to see his droopy wings and it made her feel sorrow.
He opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out. He was lost for words and didn't know what to say. He just nods in response agreeing with her. He is frustrated with her but it all leads to the true feelings they have for one another. The biggest problem is that Meri never wants to face them because she is afraid of losing her best friend. It seems like she will now either way.
"Hey, look! It's the stone arch!" Flynn pointed ahead.
It was quite foggy out so it was hard to tell. "You stay here and guard the Ballon while I go and take a look." He took his notebook and pencil with him.
Meri groaned and released the anchor. "This is my mission too, you know?" She hollered.
He let out a rough sigh. Once he made it there he realized it was a branch arch. Flynn took out his notebook and quickly drew the branch and labeled the area before flying back. He noticed she was having trouble with the Cotton ballon since it was so windy. He gasped and went over to help her. Flynn drew the anchor to a stronger part of the tree and sighed.
"Hey, we should wait around here till the storm dies down." He looked over to Meri.
Meri just snods in response. Slowly she let go of the tree. Since the wind was so strong and she was such a small lightweight fairy the wind picked her up no problem. He gasped and flew out to catch her and brought her to the ground. Flynn looks around for some shelter and spots some. "Let's stay here for the time being. It's too windy."
Flynn led them to take cover. The balloon would be fine since it was in more of a stable position in the tree. Once they got under the two settled down. He felt Meri's grief as she stared at him. He decided not to pry in it one bit. Though as they slowly sat down she spoke.
"Hey, Flynn."
He closed his eyes, breathing harshly through his nose, "Yes?"
"Thank you." She said kindly.
Instantly he opened them and looked over to her. "Now don't try to suddenly be nice to me but… you're welcome I guess." Flynn shrugged.
Once the harsh weather conditions cleared Meri found herself waking up alone. She gasped looking around. Quickly she got out of the hole of the tree and looked around. She let out a sigh of relief skiing that he and the balloon were still there. Meri flew up to meet him and landed in the basket area. "Are you ready to get going?"
He just nods in response, "Yeah, I made correlations when you were out. So I know which direction to go." Flynn released the anchor.
They continue their last journey over the island. The two didn't talk much due to Meri suggesting they shouldn't be friends anymore after this event. To Meri the silence was unbearing. She got hungry again and decided to have some Poppy-Puff Rolls. The fairy offered him some but he refused. She let out a sigh and took a bite.
Soon they found themselves in a forest. Flynn found a nice spot to anchor the balloon. Meri watched him curiously then looked ahead seeing the answer was right in front of her.
"You take the food and I will take the supplies." He tied up the bags and shoved it to her for Meri to hold.
She said a low okay and looked at the map scroll in his hand. "Flynn." She called his name softly.
"What?"
"Could I lead the way? This is more my mission than yours." She made a strong point.
He huffed and scratched his hair before turning to her. "Look, you made plenty of mistakes before. The last thing we need is to get lost." He gathered the remaining supplies and flew off down to the soil.
She gasped and was offended. Though she shook her head not wanting to start an argument. So Meri gave in and followed as they entered the woods. She walked/flew behind him a few feet away. Since they were not on good talking terms it was not ideal to stay next to him. Soon Meri watched him struggling to fly. He then went through his back to look for more pixie dust.
As he was doing so she felt a nudge near her ankle. She hummed and looked down to see an unlit firefly. She awed as her heart melted wanting to help. The light talent fairy looked for any sort of ray from the sun. She spotted one and flew over to cup some light in her hands. Once she went back down she lit the creature up.
"There you go," Meri said kindly.
The bug made a nose and noted against her again thanking the fairy. This is one of the many reasons why she is a light fairy. Meri couldn't help but to awe and kneel down to gently rub the creature. The bug then noticed it had food with her. It gave her pleading eyes that she couldn't say no to. She looked up at Flynn who was putting the pixie dust away.
"Fine, be quick." She decided to take the remainder of the snack she ate earlier.
"What are you doing?" She heard Flynn exclaim, making her stiff. The bug whimpered and hid behind her. "We're not going to lose more food than we need just because you're grown soft."
"But the bug was-" Meri tried to explain.
"No, Meri. Drop it. What is important now is that we gotta keep going." he huffed and turned back around.
She frowned and waved at the bug before following him. On The way, they came across a swamp. So they just flew over it. Halfway through Meri ran out of pixie dust and nearly fell in the muggy water. Flynn caught her nearly in time. He placed her on the rock. Meri sighed looking away, breathing a thank you. He decided to take out his pixie dust yet again.
He grumbled, "Running low. Don't you have yours?"
Meri chuckled awkwardly and rubbed her neck, "You see… since you just shoved the food for me to carry I…"
"You forgot." He asked, not amused, "Naturally." Flynn huffed and was annoyed.
He flew close by to her as she hopped along the rocks. She was upset that he didn't give her the last bit but in reality, she deserved it since she treated him so horribly. Soon she came upon a log and walked along with it. Coming to the end she peered down noticing it was a long drop. Flynn looked behind him and sighed, finally giving in taking out his pixie dust bag.
Meri shakes her head, "No, I don't deserve it. I will find a way." The redhead looked around trying to find a safe way down. She just ended up holding on to the edge of the log and hopped down. It was only a foot or two anyhow.
Not too long later they stumbled across the troll bridge. Flynn put his arm out so she wouldn't be able to continue moving forward right away. "Hey? What's that for?" She grouched.
"Don't you remember? Troll bridge?" He took out his notebook and flipped to the page showing her. "Now we don't want to attract…"
"None shall pass the secret troll bridge." The two huge ugly trolls jumped in front of them blocking the way. If anything they were more than twice their size. She startled, stepping back letting out a scream.
"The trolls or we won't be able to cross." He closed his book, crossing his arms as he finished his sentence.
"We are the guardians…" The troll who isn't so slouched started talking but was caught off by its friend.
"Hey, hey, hey, Hey! It's my turn to give the ominous warning, blockhead." The shorter one grouched.
"Is not!"
"Is too!"
They then began arguing back and forward. Meri chuckled, placing a hand on her hip, "They sound familiar." She looked over to Flynn.
He nods, "Yeah, they do." he chuckled looking over to her smiling slightly. He shook his head and took a few steps forward, "Look, we don't owe you any trouble. You see my…" he looked back at Meri. He was just about to call her a friend! Though he knew they weren't so much anymore. It almost made him feel empty.
"You did it last time." The taller one looked down upon its friend.
"That was over 300 years ago!" The other one splat harshly in return.
The taller one offered him to go ahead quite annoyed, folding his hands together.
The smaller one cleared his throat, "We are guardians of the secret troll bridge. Beat it before we grind your bones to make our bed."
"Bed?" Meri echoed looking over to Flynn. He just shrugged in response.
"Bread." The other one corrected, "The correct expression is bread, not bed!"
"Oh… really? Who would want to make bread out of bones? Might break a tooth."
"Well, who would want to make a bed out of bones?" The other troll exclaimed.
The small one seemed to say something in troll language after. Both of them started to criticize each other by calling names. It seems as if one of them crossed the line causing one of them to feel horrible. The two then made up. Meri crossed her arms as they started to apologize to one another. It was fairly sweet. Slowly she looked over to Flynn as he didn't seem to be amused. Her eyes then followed down to the ground.
"Come on, let's go." She felt a tug as he took her wrist.
She then followed behind and looked at the two as they seemed to be distracted. Flynn gently let go of her wrist once they were past them. They seemed so huge compared to her. The troll bridge was quite a long tunnel. Meri looked back as Flynn already took the lead. She did her best to catch up but it was so difficult without pixie dust. She growled trying to catch up.
Soon the two of them could hear the ocean. Flynn then turned around and tried to find her. He called her name as she just seemed to be down aways hopping over the twisted branches. He sighed, crossing her arms watching her walk over to him. "We are not too far away. I could hear the ocean."
She nods, "Me too."
"Let's get moving, quickly."
"I would if I had some pixie dust," Meri grumbled.
A/N: That is all for this chapter!
