Third Person POV: Jacob
Jacob watched from down on the beach as Bella plummeted off the cliff. He sprinted towards the tumultuous waters and dove in facing where he saw Bella land. This was bad, not only were the waves treacherous but the water was frigid too. He was able to endure this temperature because of his high body heat but Bella would almost certainly get hypothermia. He pushed himself, swimming rapidly through the waves. When he reached the spot she had gone under he took in a deep breath and plunged into the water. He swam down toward the rocks and prayed Bella had not injured herself. That was unlikely though, she always managed to get hurt.
He spotted a flash of reddish orange and swam towards it. As he approached, he saw Victoria swim away, leaving Bella's body behind. Jacob retrieved her body and headed for the shore. He noticed a thick streak of blood flowing from the back of her head. Shit! She had managed to hit her head on the rocks. He lugged her out of the water and laid her down on the beach. She was moaning in pain. The head injury must have been worse than he thought but at least she was semi-conscious. As he leaned down to give her CPR she started screaming and thrashing violently. What was going on?
Then he caught a faint whiff of venom over the pungent sea stench. Had Victoria bitten Bella? He pushed Bella's thick damp hair away from her neck and spotted Victoria's bite mark. The wound had already healed over and stood out as two opposing silver crescent marks.
This was it. He knew what he was obligated to do… His pack was devoted to eliminating vampires. But as he looked down at the girl he loved, he just couldn't find it in himself to kill her.
He sighed and raked his hands through his buzzed hair. What was he going to do? He had to get Bella somewhere far enough away from Forks that Victoria wouldn't find her and far enough away from civilization that she wouldn't encounter humans when she woke. He could bring her to central Alaska. If her dropped her off in the middle of the Gates of the Arctic National Park she could wander for days without seeing a single human. He would need his dad to cover for him while he was gone though. If he drove the whole way, his pack mates wouldn't be able to locate him. But once he got back, he wouldn't be able to hide what he'd done from the pack-mind.
Timing wise the destination was perfect; the drive to the national park took three days with minimal sleep. Bella would wake once he had left and be long gone by the time the pack found out what he had done. He knew they would shun him for saving a leech, but Bella was his best friend.
Jacob scooped Bella up bridal style and jogged to his car. He placed her in the trunk and grabbed a sweatshirt to wrap around her neck and face. He closed the trunk to confirm that Bella's screams were adequately muffled from outside the car. Then he took off down the road towards his house.
When he arrived home, he found his dad lounging in the family room watching the football game. His father greeted him when he entered and Jacob took a seat next to his father.
"Dad, I need to ask you for a favor. And I need you to not ask any questions for now." He told him. His father turned his full attention to his son and looked at him searchingly.
"Okay son, I trust you. What do you need?" He inquired.
"I need to leave the res for a few days, and I don't want anyone from the pack coming after me. You can tell them whatever excuse you want; say we had a fight and I needed to cool down, but please make sure they don't try to follow me."
His father blew out a long breath, contemplating. Jacob knew his father trusted him - he had been so proud when Jacob became a protector - but this request was sketchy at best.
"Okay, I will do this for you, but I want you to explain the situation to me when you get back. Deal?" His father told him and offered his hand to shake.
Jacob's shoulders sagged in relief, and he firmly gripped his father's outstretched hand. "Deal! Thank you, dad." He said and jogged out the door.
Jacob returned to his car and headed off to the Gates of the Arctic National Park with Bella still in the back. He wished he could give her more dignity then being stuck in the trunk, but he didn't need anyone overseeing a screaming girl in his car and reporting him to the police.
He had just enough time to spare in order to make it to Alaska before Bella woke.
First Person POV: Nameless
I felt myself being carried and placed gently on the ground. I was in agony. I clawed at the individual and screamed, begging for mercy. The burning had started to recede from my limbs, focusing hotter and hotter as it closed in on my heart.
"I hope you can hear me… I just… I want to tell you that you can't come back to Forks." I heard a smooth baritone voice say and then heard retreating footsteps. I cried out with new vigor, begging the individual to end my suffering. But all I heard was a car pulling away. The burning was converging on my heart now. I let out one last shrill cry before my heart gave a resounding beat once, twice, and then stilled.
It was over.
I felt myself laying on a bed of pine needles. I shifted my fingers, petting the soft surface. I could smell the overwhelming scent of pine but there were undertones - fresh dirt and flowers. And somewhere far away were beings with a rich earthy scent. I heard the birds chirping and water rushing down a stream nearby. I opened my eyes and was greeted by a rush of stimulation. I blinked a few times and focused on the air in front of me. I could make out the tiny pollen molecules and humidity suspended in the air. I allowed my eyes to focus farther out and saw sunrays filtering through the gaps in the tree leaves. And the leaves, God, I could see every vein on them even from this distance.
I moved to stand and found myself landing gracefully on my feet. I walked aimlessly for a while. I recalled what the voice had said… you can't come back to Forks. Had that been my home? I didn't know where Forks was, but I presumed I had been dumped somewhere far away. This place was beautiful, maybe I could just live here.
After a few hours of wandering my throat began to burn. I took a deep breath and picked up on that rich earthy scent again. I decided to follow my instincts, taking off after the scent. A herd of caribou came into view. Of course, when they heard me break through the trees, they scattered but I darted after one and pounced. I sunk my teeth into the animal's neck and felt hot liquid pour out. It was rich, mildly sweet and bitter. I gulped it down, only managing to consume about half the liquid that spilled out. As I finished drinking from the caribou I pursed my lips and pondered. Although the caribou had satisfied my thirst, it had not tasted as good as I imagined it should have. There had to be better options out there.
I looked down and noticed most of my front was coated with blood. I would have to find a water source to clean myself. Hopefully, I would learn to drink more efficiency with practice.
I spent the rest of the day hunting caribou. I worked on my stealth, sneaking up on the caribou and catching them unaware. Their blood was sweeter when they were scared.
Third Person POV: Victoria
Victoria exited the ocean on an empty beach in Portugal. She was thankful to be far away from those mangey wolves that always chased her.
Today she had taken a significant step towards taking down the Cullen's. She would see the Cullen's burn in vengeance for her mate's death. But first she wanted to play with them.
She had accomplished what she had set out to do. Bella was either dead or undead by now. It was perfect really. The one thing Edward held most dearly was Bella's humanity and now Victoria had taken that from him. If Bella was dead, then Edward would be torn with grief. And if Bella was undead, her head trauma and change would wipe away the bulk of her human memories. That meant that she and Edward might never find each other. Well maybe not never but she would deal with that once they got there.
She wondered how Edward would react when he found out his love was dead. She only wished she could be there to witness it.
