First Person POV: Izzy

My first week with the Denali's passed in no time. My room was now furnished and the 20 or so large boxes worth of clothing had been aired out and organized into my closet. I felt as though I was integrating well with my new family. They had even taken to calling me Izzy for short. Of course, Kate's constant complaining about how formal my name sounded certainly helped.

Recently, Irina had been pestering me to pick up a hobby, stating that immortal life gets boring without an outlet. Since I couldn't remember my human life, I didn't have the slightest clue what I might have a knack for. So, I chose a guitar at random. Irina seemed to be pleased with my choice, so I asked her to pick me up a guitar and beginner's book from the music store in town.

I heard the front door swing open, and Irina came through the door calling "Izzy!" in a singsong voice. I rushed downstairs, excited to see my new guitar.

However, I slowed as I came within range of Irina. I smelled a variety of delectable human scents. My throat lit up with pain and I growled. My instincts screamed at me to fight Irina for the scent. Irina froze and my new family members dashed over. I knew they were preparing in case I needed to be restrained. I felt a pair of hands on my shoulders, holding me in place.

I battled internally to regain control. I took a shaky breath through my mouth and squeezed my eyes shut. I released my breath slowly. I could do this! I could resist, I didn't have to give in to the beast.

As I came back into myself, I realized what I had done - I had growled at my sister over an indirect human scent, I had been prepared to fight her.

"I-I'm so sorry Irina." I strained to speak while fighting to maintain control. The fire in my throat still raged but I felt more myself again. Irina's eyebrows shot up and the rest of the family seemed to relax marginally.

"No, Izzy, I'm the one who's sorry. I clearly wasn't thinking when I brought these in without airing them out first." She said, handing the items off to Carmen who disappeared out the back door. I was relieved to have the items gone so that I could breathe normally again. The faintest trace of the human scent remained but I could handle it. I shook my head at her.

"I was ready to fight you, Irina." I explained.

Tanya and Kate stepped over to me and placed their hands on my back to comfort me. I couldn't see why they were being so nice after what had just happened.

"But you didn't Izzy! You should have attacked her immediately, but you resisted." Tanya told me proudly.

"You really shouldn't feel bad little one, the human scent on those items was potent. We had planned to acclimate you to human scent over time, but we never would have started with something of that strength. The fact that you maintained control is incredible!" Kate praised. Tanya and Irina nodded in agreement. I felt my guilt fade with their words. They had been so understanding and accommodating so far. I was ineffably grateful to be part of their family.

Time Skip:

I sat in my bedroom, practicing guitar scales. I had figured that learning guitar would be quite the challenge, but I found that with vampire reflexes and a perfect memory, I was flying through the beginner's book. I finished up my twentieth repetition of the C-scale. Then I set the book aside and placed my guitar back on its wall hanger. I had been in my room for long enough, I would go see what the family was up to.

When I arrived downstairs, I was surprised to find only Carmen and Eleazar. They paused their conversation and smiled at me as I walked over to them.

"Do you need to hunt dear?" Carmen asked me. I smiled - she was always looking after me.

"No, just taking a break from learning guitar." I responded.

"It sounds good, you're a fast learner." Eleazar told me. I ducked my head and gave him a shy smile in return - I still wasn't used to being complimented. It was odd to be around others again after so many months of solitude. Even after a week, I was still adapting to life with my new family. They liked to dote on me as the youngest of the family and I certainly wasn't complaining.

"The girls are doing their weekly sparring out back. We weren't going to start your training until you were fully settled in. But if you want to start early, I'm sure the girls would love to teach you." Carmen told me.

Sparring sounded awesome, I definitely wanted to start early if they would allow me.

"Sounds fun, thanks!" I called as I dashed over to the back door. As I stepped out into the expansive back yard, I spotted the girls. Tanya and Kate were engaged in a heated duel. They fought within a large painted circle. I presumed the goal was to knock your opponent out of the ring. It looked like Tanya currently had the upper hand as Kate was gradually losing ground.

Irina was the first to notice me. She waved me over and patted the ground next to her. The other girls were too absorbed by their match to notice my approach. As I sat down on the grass next to Irina, Tanya finally looked over and noticed my arrival. Unfortunately, Kate took the window of opportunity to kick Tanya in the chest and she was sent skidding backwards. By the time she had balanced herself, she was outside of the circle. Kate raised her hands in victory and Tanya rolled her eyes.

"Really Kate?" Tanya scoffed as she and Kate approached us. I couldn't help but giggle at their dynamic.

"Sorry I costed you the match." I told Tanya.

"Oh, it's fine. I think we all know I was on track to win that one anyway." She said while smirking at Kate.

"Can you teach me to fight like that?" I asked eagerly.

"Sweetheart, you know it's not pressing that you learn to fight. As you have probably noticed, we live a rather peaceful life here." She told me and I pouted. I really wanted to learn.

"Now, how am I supposed to resist that face?" She said with a soft chuckle. "I was going to let you train either way." My face lit up and I hopped up, ready for action.

"Kate, you're the master. Why don't you cover the basics with her? Irina and I will spar in the meantime" Tanya told us, and Kate nodded in agreement.

"Come on little one." Kate said gesturing for me to follow her to a portion of the yard tangent to the forest line and a safe distance away from the sparring.

"Now, we're going to work on your form first, then we'll run some drills so you can practice the basics. You'll find that as a vampire, fighting comes like second nature to you so don't worry if you have no experience." She said as she led me to the forest line. "I want you to punch this tree - lightly. The goal isn't to knock it over, I just want to observe your form."

I started punching the tree trying to keep my strength in check. The tree shook with every punch and let off wood chips from where my fists landed. Meanwhile, Kate circled around me positioning my legs and rotating my hips until my form meet her standards. When she was satisfied, we moved onto drills. She told me to use her hands as the punching bag and give it my all. I started in with 200 jabs, 200 hooks, 200 uppercuts and so on. By the time we finished drills, I had formed a new appreciation for my vampire stamina and endurance. Even after four straight hours of intense training I was feeling fine. No sweat, no heavy breathing, and no tomato red face.

I was ready to jump right into sparring, but the girls insisted that we hunt first since I had already expended so much energy. They were right of course; I hadn't even noticed the fire building in my throat. Once I took down a few caribou, we called it a day. When we arrived back to the yard after our mini hunting trip, Tanya addressed the girls.

"I've got her from here, you two can take the circle to spar." She told her sisters, and they ran off.

"We're going to have to paint another circle. But for now, the goal will be to pin the other for three seconds. And don't worry, I'll go easy on you for now." She told me with a wink.

We started circling each other, waiting for the other to make the first move. Suddenly Tanya darted at me, throwing a right hook. I ducked just in time to miss the blow and I moved to stand. As I stood, I took the opportunity to throw an upper cut at her jaw. As my fist made impact, Tanya was sent flying back a few feet. I briefly worried that I may have overstepped but Tanya righted herself and smiled widely at me.

"That was good! You're a natural." She praised.

This time around Tanya came at me harder than before. The gleam in her eyes told me that she wouldn't be going easy on me from now on.

Tanya leaped forward and threw a round house kick at my side. As I moved to dodge, she faked me out and swiped my ankles out from under me. Tanya didn't give me a second to recover and immediately pounced. I rolled to the side and jumped back into a defensive stance. We returned to circling. Tanya began relentlessly throwing punches at me and I dodged rapidly. Tanya wasn't the type of fighter that would come at a newborn head on, so I figured she was probably planning something. I would have to keep my guard up.

I found the perfect break in her punches and moved to jab, but she caught my fist, anticipating my move. She pulled me toward her while spinning inward and launched me over her shoulder. The momentum from Tanya's throw knocked the air out of me in a whoosh. Before I had time to recover, Tanya swung her leg around me and straddled my hips while pinning my hands above my head.

"One." She began. As I recovered, I began to struggle under her.

"Two." She continued. I growled and bucked my hips trying to no avail to knock her off. I saw her golden eyes begin to darken rapidly.

"Three." She said, her voice now husky.

As I ceased my struggling, I became acutely aware of our intimate position. I could feel every inch of her lush body pressed against mine. Our faces were only centimeters apart, so close that our breath mingled. I took a shallow breath and was instantly emersed in her heady scent. I instinctually arched my body, pressing my chest against hers and bared my neck. Tanya leaned down and let her lips ghost up my neck. I shivered as her warm breath caressed my skin. She gently scrapped her sharp teeth along my throat, and I let out a soft whimper of pleasure.

The noise seemed to knock Tanya out of her trance, as she jumped up and put a safe distance between us. As I came back to reality, the mortification set in. I had just come on strong to Tanya and she had rejected my advances.

I jumped to my feet, avoiding eye contact, and dashed to my room. I heard Carmen and Eleazar call out to me in concern but I ignored them. I shut my door and locked it. Locking the door wouldn't keep anyone out, but it would get message across that I didn't want to be bothered. I collapsed face first onto my mattress and let myself mope. How could I face Tanya again?
