Author: Hello, sorry for delayed update (it's extremely delayed actually). Somethings came up within the past month or two but I'm back with another update. I can already see some people wishing for longer chapters. If anyone wishes for future chapters to be longer, let me know. I'll try making them longer but I do promise that once I get far enough into the story, I'll go back and flesh out these early chapters. For now, thanks for all the support and I hope you enjoy this chapter.
Chapter 3
All she heard in her dreams were the crickets chirping, the wind blowing through the grass, and feeling cold. Everything was dark and she felt herself crawling aimlessly around, seeking out any shred of warmth. She was searching, searching, until...
"Sleetkit!"
A voice seemed to call out to her from nowhere, but each time the voice called louder until...
Sleetkit woke up with a start as two male kits, one a creamy brown tom and the other a pure white tom, playfully pounced on each other. The two kits tumbled around, playfully biting and batting at each other until they bumped into her, the impact having woken her up from her slumber.
"Watch it, will you?" Sleetkit hissed, her fur bristling a bit. The two male kits jumped at hearing her hiss. The creamy brown tom, the somewhat bolder of the two, just glared at her.
"What's got your fur in a bunch? We didn't mean to disturb your precious beauty sleep." The creamy brown male kit spat while the other kit just tried making himself seem smaller than he actually was.
"C-come on, Q-Quailkit. We shouldn't be fighting." The white kit said timidly to his brother. But the kit, now known as Quailkit, ignored his brother's pleading tone and he lowered his body into a crouch, looking like he was ready to pounce. Despite being named after a timid bird that was quick to flee at the first sign of danger, Quailkit was anything but timid.
"Quailkit." His brother started again, but again, Quailkit ignored him. "Come on, don't do this."
"Quiet, Mumblekit," Quailkit said sharply to his brother. His amber eyes narrowed. "Sleetkit thinks she's so much better than us just because she gets special attention from Paleleg."
Sleetkit felt her fur bristle a bit more at the male's words and she let out a soft growl. "I don't think I'm better than you!" She hissed.
Quailkit seemed to smirk and for a few moments, both kits stared each other down with Mumblekit cowering behind his brother, his pleading words being ignored. But before the kits could do or say anything else, a voice spoke, startling all three of them.
"Alright, that's enough." Said the voice of one of the Queens that had been sleeping. The three kits looked over in surprise at a pale gray she-cat with fluffy fur staring at them with amber eyes.
"But Sleetkit started it!" Qualkit protested, but the Queen, Snowleaf, lightly nipped the young kit on his ear to quiet him.
"And you and Mumblekit bumped into her," Snowleaf started, but seeing Mumblekit's nervous posture, she gave both toms a soft lick. "But at the same time, Sleetkit should've kept her temper." She scolded gently. The Queen stretched out her body before curling back up again and with a swish of her tail, she beckoned the three kits back to her. "Now the three of you should be resting up. After all, the three of you will be apprentices at sunset."
"But we're not tired. Well, I'm not." Qualkit said defiantly as Sleetkit and Mumblekit settled in next to their mother.
"Until you become an apprentice, you will do as I say and rest up." The Queen's stern voice was more than enough to make Qualkit obey, if her steely gaze wasn't.
Quailkit had no choice but to obey his mother and the kit joined his siblings laying next to the speckled white she-cat. Once all three were nestled against her belly, Snowleaf purred softly in amusement and licked all three of the kits.
"Just a few more hours, my children and then you'll soon begin your journeys in becoming full fledged Warriors." She purred gently, more to herself than to her kits as they drifted off to sleep.
