Chapter 4
Despite the seemingly rude awakening she received earlier, sleep came back quickly as she curled up beside her brothers against the warm softness of their mother's belly. But the dream she had earlier was harder to get back. Just when she thought she had a good grip on the cricket filled dream, it slipped through her paws, and she was left in a dreamless black void of sleep. Instead she found herself in a warm place, a field full of grass and sunshine.
The warmth of the sun on her pelt felt so real that she couldn't help the purr rumbling in the back of her throat. Sleetkit sniffed the air, opening her mouth to let the sweet aroma flowing through the air to hit her scent glands when a peculiar scent greeted her nose. It was sweet and delicious, it was something she often smelled faintly when the warriors returned from hunting outside of the Clan Camp, but instead of smelling faint and not… alive, it smelled fresh.
The young kit followed the scent until she heard a soft squeak followed by a soft rustling in the nearby grass. She then glanced around until she spotted the source of the soft squeaks and the freshly sweet smell that made her mouth water. It was a small grey-brown rodent, a mouse that was digging in the ground. With her gaze focused on the mouse, Sleetkit lowered her body into a hunting crouch, her tail swishing gently from side to side in excitement, her whiskers twitching, and her heart beating softly in her chest. She was ready to pounce. That is until she heard a voice and felt something soft nudging her gently.
As Sleetkit was slowly stirring from her sleep, she heard a familiar voice speaking, although it didn't address her. It was a soft, quiet voice. Sleetkit opened her eyes a little and saw a large tom cat, a golden tabby warrior poking his head through the entrance of the nursery. The large golden tabby tom looked around a bit, looking at the other two queens in the nursery, a brown she-cat who was close to giving birth and a sleek creamy brown she-cat who wasn't expecting kits at all laying next to the expect brown queen. She recognized the golden tabby warrior as her father, Addergaze. The soon to be apprentice quickly closed her eyes as Addergaze came all the way into the nursery and gently padded over to Snowleaf and the kits.
"Snowleaf? Snowleaf, wake up, it's nearly moonhigh. You should get the kits ready." Sleetkit heard Addergaze meow gently to her mother, and just from how Snowleaf stirred, she knew that her mother heard him.
"Addergaze." Snowleaf purred gently as she opened her eyes. Being careful as to not wake Sleetkit and her brothers yet, the speckled white queen partially sat up and pressed her head gently against her mate's, a loud purr rumbling in her throat.
Addergaze, who was usually so stoic and quiet, purred as well, running his tongue over Snowleaf's head a few times in a loving manner. The two remained close together for a brief moment before pulling apart. "Get the kits ready, it's almost time." the golden warrior meowed softly.
Snowleaf purred again and dipped her head in acknowledgement as she now sat up completely, causing Sleetkit to finally open her eyes. She bent over all three of them and gently licked them, to rouse them out of their slumber even though Sleetkit was already awake. "Come on you three, wake up. It's almost time."
