Chapter 17: Epilogue

After the Cullens departure, Bella and Jake felt as if a weight have been lifted off their shoulders. As much as Bella loved each of them, there was some tension and some level of distrust towards Edward that didn't completely go until he left for good.

Just as more than six months ago, the pack celebrated their departure by having a bonfire. This amused Bella this time, while last time it felt wrong. She contributed by taking the leftovers of the snacks she baked from the diner. It was Saturday and they hadn't had many clients as usual, and the manager didn't want the food to go to waste. Bella asked her if she could take it and she said yes.

"Bella, could Sam and I talk to you and Jared?" Emily asked shyly and Bella nodded a little confused. She saw Jacob and he nodded winking at her. He knew what they wanted.

Bella followed Jared and the couple away from the fire and from the people. "We wanted to ask the two of you something."

Jared nodded. "Sure. What's up?"

"Would you be the godparents of our baby?" Emily asked with a soft smile and her hands on her baby bump.

Bella gasped emotionally and immediately felt tears in her eyes. "Of course. I can't believe you'd want me to be your baby's godmother." It was such an honor that they trusted her that much. She had never felt like she belonged in one place. Her mother was always trying new things, while she was comfortable with the known. When she moved to Forks, she was scared about what the changes would bring. She never expected to fall in love, twice. Because, like it or not, she had loved Edward, and she had been given everything of her to that relationship. Too bad it wasn't good enough for him. Then, a certain boy who had been on the periphery of her life, waltzed into the middle of it again and took her for a spin. Before she knew what was happening, she was kissing him in her kitchen and confessing her feelings for him.

Now, here she was, with Sam and Emily and she was going to be the godmother of their baby. It meant a lot to her. Sam laughed and hugger tightly. She had become a little sister to him, and he couldn't think of a better woman to be his first child's godmother.

"Jay?" Emily asked and Bella turned her head to Jared who looked shocked.

"Are you serious?" He whispered as if he couldn't believe his ears.

Sam palmed his shoulder. "You were the first to join me, and you're my best friend. Of course, I want you to be his or her godfather." Jared looked like he wanted to cry. It was so cute, that Bella hugged him, which made him laugh.

"Thank you, man." Jared answered. "It's an honor to me that you trust me that much."

Sam nodded and clapped him on the back. Apparently, this situation was a bit too sentimental for him, so we disguised his emotion by walking back to the bonfire. Emily smiled amusedly at his retreating figure and motioned Bella and Jared to rejoin the party.

"Did you know that they were going to ask us that?" Bella asked Jake when they arrived at his house, where she had told Charlie she was spending the night.

Jake nodded. "He was thinking about it the other day when we phased together and asked me not to tell you anything." He shrugged.

Bella shook her head, still amazed. She had never been too good at making friends, but she just clicked with Emily. She could easily say that Emily has been her only best friend. Because not even with Alice she had clicked that fast or that well. She loved Alice, but she also knew that their friendship was different than the one she had with Emily.

She was excited for what life would bring from now on. This was getting interesting to say the least.

Emily's pregnancy went by in whirlwind. It went by so fast that everyone but the baby's parents were basically caught by surprise when they announced that Em was in labor in the reservation clinic.

To say that the wolves were antsy was an understatement. Neither could stay in human form for too long, so they decided to patrol unsuspiciously around the clinic for as long as it took Emily to give birth. While the boys were anxiously pacing around, Bella, Kim, and Angela (who to everyone's surprise was Paul's imprint) were excitedly waiting in the waiting room. They drank a copious amount of coffee because the birth process was seemingly taking longer than the whole pregnancy itself.

Sam was a bundle of nerves and excitement. He took it as champion and never left Emily's side.

It took a total of ten hours of labor for the pack to finally meet Natalie, the first pack baby. She was a beauty of toasted skin, dark hair, and chubby cheeks. She was also the quietest baby Bella had seen (not that she had seen many). She was simply gorgeous.

The exhausted mother smiled happily at her husband carrying their precious little girl. She was very tiny and seemingly disappeared in Sam's big frame.

Jared was the first godparent to carry her. He looked a little bit scared, but he managed not to drop the baby, much to everyone's amusement.

"Your auntie Bella will be too strict with you, no doubt. But I'm gonna teach you how to get in trouble and not get caught." Bella snorted and rolled her eyes, but she didn't deny the truth behind the words.

Bella's stare met Kim's and she winked at her friend, who looked star trucked at her boyfriend with a baby. She had to admit that Jared looked incredibly adorable holding their little goddaughter.

Soon, Jared passed Natalie to Bella who took her with the same fear as Jared's. She was so tiny, and she had zero experience with newborns, or babies in general, but nonetheless, Bella managed to cradle her in one arm and use her other one to softly touch her chubby cheek. This was the future that she really wanted. A future she had blocked when she stubbornly set her mind on being with Edward forever.

She sought Jake's eyes, it wasn't difficult, he had the same expression Kim had when Jared had held Nat. She winked and he smiled widely and beautifully at her, knowing perfectly well what she was thinking. They were too young and did not have the means yet to take care of a baby and themselves, but sooner or later, they would start their own family, and it was going to be as beautiful as Sam's and Emily's.

Two years had passed and Bella couldn't be happier. Her relationship with Jake wasn't perfect, they had their ups and downs, but together they navigated through them.

Bella had started community college and to her surprise and everyone's, she was studying management and administration. Her job as a baker at the diner had inspired her to want to aspire more. She either wanted to manage the diner at some point, or in the future open her own bakery in the reservation. She inclined herself towards the second option because the reservation had so many beautiful places in which she could open a bakery and enjoy both the sight and the business.

But that dream was for the future. For now, she was happy with her job. Baby steps.

It had been hard at the beginning, trying to find a method and a rhythm that worked for her, but she found it eventually, and it was all up from there. Her snacks (as she lovingly called them), which consisted on a variety of muffins, cupcakes, cookies and buns were a hit with everyone. She even suggested to complement a few of them with vanilla ice cream and have it as a part of the dessert menu.

It worked.

Charlie was immensely proud of her, so was Renee who had taken the time to reach out more often. Since she noticed that Bella was distancing herself from her the closer she got to Charlie, Renee couldn't have that. She loved her daughter and realized that she had to make more of an effort. This change in roles made Bella happy and in turn pleased Charlie as well. Renee and he never talked again after she walked out of his life with his daughter. They only talked about summer visitations and Bella's final decision of coming to live with him.

Charlie was a man of few words, but his heart was bigger than anyone's and was in the right place. He teared up when in a sudden affectionate moment, Bella lounged into her father's arms and whispered her love for him and her gratitude that he always had a place for her in his life, even when she was difficult and undeserving. He cried openly to Billy while retelling the story. Billy smiled amusedly at his best friend, but he understood. The divorce had been brutal for Charlie, who, since high school had eyes for no one but Renee. It meant a lot to Billy that his best friend and his daughter had repaired a relationship that had been strained by her mother (either unconsciously or not).

Jake's job was also going great. He had regular customers that only wanted him, and he had decided to follow in Bella's footsteps and study management and administration. If his boss was to be believed, he could be soon be the manager of the garage. The owner was thinking of expanding and he needed the current manager for the new location, which would mean leaving Jacob in charge of the Forks garage.

As they both had steady jobs and steady income, and were living with their respective parents and had saved as much as they could, they started talking about moving in together at the end of Bella's second year at college (and Jake's first).

Jared's dad owned a construction company, where most of the guys worked, with the exception of Embry who was working towards being a physiotherapist at the reservation clinic. Jake asked Jared's dad for advice. That's how he ended with the keys to a two bedroom house in the reservation. It was his for the weekend to show Bella and see what she thought of it.

They would need to buy furniture and everything and it would be a slow start, but it would be theirs. She fell in love with the open spaced living room and kitchen. The master bedroom was big, and the second bedroom, while smaller, was also a decent room. They could transform it into an office until they decided to start their family.

That same weekend, they signed the papers, and started making plans to move in their next common day off. They enlisted the pack's help. Even little Natalie was walking clumsily around the house and grabbing things from the floor.

Renee and Phil gifted the new couple a nice refrigerator, while Charlie and Billy chimed in for the washing machine. This set of gifts had been hilarious for Bella and Jake, who jokingly told his girlfriend on their first night sleeping there "One day your young, and the next, you're excited because your parents gave you a washing machine and a refrigerator."

They christened the house very thoroughly that first week. Which, ironically, was how their children were conceived. So much for planning a future and waiting to be stable to have kids.

….

When it was time for Bella's babies to be born, Jacob hadn't been more panicked in his life. He kept pacing in the room, while Bella battled contractions. It was still too soon, but he was scared. He was barely twenty, with two years of college under his belt, and he didn't know what to do with two babies.

Billy tried to calm him down, reminding him that he had been working for three years now, that they both had the means to provide for their little family, and that a title wasn't guarantee of anything. In addition to that, they had an army of friends and family that would jump to the the task of helping them with their children. Jake's boss was building the new garage, so his position as manager was officially starting in a few months, which would give him a more stable work hours, and the pay was going to increase. Jacob nodded at his father's words and tried to breathe in and out. It was almost as if he was the one giving birth and not Bella.

His wife. His amazing, and beautiful wife. They got married when Bella was six months pregnant. She didn't care about showing at her wedding. She was in love, and she loved her wedding pictures where Jake hugged her from behind and joined their hands on top of her belly.

Bella had sent that picture to Alice and Emmett. Their answer came in the form of gift baskets. They smiled relieved when they saw that neither of them had gone overboard with the gifts. Alice had sent a small stuffed giraffe, while Emmett sent a bear. In fact, almost everything that Alice sent had a giraffe, while Emmett had gone with a variety of prints. Bella suspected that Rosalie had pitched in Emmett's gift.

The next few days, a new package arrived, this time from Carlisle and Esme. It was their babies' cribs. Bella asked Jake if he was ok with keeping them.

He smiled softly, as if he would say no to the love in his wife's eyes. And honestly, the cribs were very cute. Again, he enlisted the help of Embry and Quil to put the cribs together and paint the babies' room. To Bella's surprise, Quil was a magnificent artist and he painted different animals on the walls. They decided to paint the walls a pale shade of yellow because it was the tamest color they could agree on and because it looked so cute with Quil's drawings.

Bella's labor took longer than Emily's, but at the end, they received two exquisite babies. They were small, lean and so perfect. Bella cried the first time she held them after they were cleaned, and she had had some rest. Jacob's eyes smarted too, but he rained his emotions.

"They're so perfect." She whispered, tracing her index finger down one of her baby's nose.

Jake was holding the other baby, and he knew that there would be no greater love in this earth than his love for his family.

Once they were up for visits, the first ones to come in were the proud grandparents.

Bella and Jake smiled at their parents. Surely they were going to cry when they revealed the names of their twins.

"Dad, Billy, let us introduce you to your grandchildren." She nodded to Jake to do the honors with their daughter.

He took her baby in his arms and walked towards the expecting grandfathers. "This is Sarah Alexandra." Billy gasped and surely his eyes filled with tears.

He took his granddaughter in his arms and cooed at her. "She's gorgeous. Mom would have been so proud." Jake beamed at his father.

Then he walked back to Bella and took his baby boy, walking to Charlie. "And this, is Alexander William." Charlie smiled. His grandson was named after him. Well, his second name, but still. He took the sleeping boy in his arms and swayed him softly.

"Oh Bells. He's so tiny." He whispered.

Bella giggled. "Twins tend to be smaller than single babies."

When they were discharged from the hospital, Bella sent again so many pictures to Alice, Emmett, Carlisle, and Esme. She thanked them for their precious gifts and promised to keep sending them pictures. She was going to be one of those moms who took a billion pictures and videos of her babies. And Jake was not safe either.

She had her tiny piece of perfection in the form of a loving husband, and two beautiful babies. She was the happiest woman on earth.
