A mystic melody.
Branch's mind stalled for a few moments after he had been told the big news but, when he recovered, he quickly started to hug Poppy and kissed her because he was overjoyed but also disbelieving at the revelation. Then he apologised over and over again about tickling her to death and started to ask her if she needed to go and see the local doctor.
Poppy was thrilled at how happy Branch was but knew that she was in for a few long weeks of constant paranoid scrutiny.
Branch tried not to let his fears show but him?
A dad?
The idea made his heart jump for joy but his stomach sink with dread.
But he knew that he had to be ready so he decided to get busy with helping his wife with everything and anything for running the Pop trolls with just as much happiness and optimism as she always had.
But he decided to surprise Poppy with something he'd been working on ever since he'd found out about the news. He just grabbed both of her hands, told her to close her eyes, guided her over to their shared pod and started to give her gentle instructions.
"Be careful, Poppy. Easy now, easy does it! That's it, that's it, that's right..." Branch took Poppy by the arm as he gently led her on to a platform.
He assisted her as gently as possible while he ascended up a short flight of stairs.
"Branch, can you please just tell me what the big surprise is?"
Branch couldn't hold back a smirk. He didn't want Poppy spoiling any surprises now because he knew that she was like a firecracker when it came to surprises —excitable, bouncy, trying to get every detail of said surprise in a hyperactive manner, things like that. Plus he had no idea as to how this would effect the baby Poppy was carrying inside her.
He had been working on this surprise for as long as Poppy revealed her condition to him...3 weeks.
"Nope." Branch sniggered to himself, "A surprise is a surprise for a reason."
Poppy moaned and poured like a petulant child but decided to wait it out until she could finally be allowed to open her eyes and see what this "surprise" is. After leading his wife up a few more steps, Branch gently let go of his wife's hands and took a few steps back and he then wandered to a corner of the room and then pulled a cord that hung from the side of the canopy and, almost instantly, the roof opened up and revealed something that made Poppy's jaw drop.
The inside of the roof had been modified into a bedroom of some sorts.
The floors were made from blue cotton and the walls had been painted a red/pink colour, a cradle had been erected to stand in the back of the room as well as a small wardrobe and a small extra tables that had been jammed in the corners of the room. In the middle of the room, hanging down from the ceiling in the middle, was a very well and carefully-crafted mobile with tiny wooden figurines and plants that were tied to it.
Poppy didn't know what to possibly say about this, for the words had become caught in her throat.
How?
How had Branch found enough time to make this?
It was absolutely beautiful and she couldn't wait to see her baby play in this area.
In spite of her wonderment and awe, she slipped a snide smirk to her king.
"When did you have time to make this?"
Branch chirped happily, gently tugging his wife by the arm. "I couldn't really wait after I was given permission from your dad so I kinda, maybe, got a little ahead of myself..."
Poppy's eyes were overflowing with tears.
In the meantime, Branch deftly led Poppy over towards a nearby rocking chair and helped her sit down, trying to be as careful as he possibly could. The queen of the trolls sat down and started tipping the chair back and forth whilst stroking her abdomen with tenderness shining in her eyes.
The blue troll couldn't risk hurting her in her delicate condition especially since she was the one going to carry his infant. He tried to treat Poppy as respectfully as possible but he also couldn't help but treat her as though she were made from the finest and most delicate porcelain.
Ever since Branch had learned of the fact that he and Poppy were going to be parents, Branch had started baby-proofing the entire vicinity of pop troll village; he would venture out to the boarders and do everything he possibly could to practically baby proof nature. If Branch hadn't been a cautious recluse of a troll before than this baby troll had amplified his paranoia to all new heights.
Branch knelt next to her and asked her, "So Poppy, when is the egg gonna be here?"
Poppy giggled and explained.
"It will take a week or so but the egg will need to be incubated in the father's hair...take Guy Diamond for example —when Tiny Diamond was born, Guy was the one who incubated him until he popped out of his egg. I'll need you to hatch our little one."
Branch felt nervous about that.
He knew all about the mechanics of how birthing baby trolls worked and how it was up to the mothers to carry their eggs inside their stomachs until said egg moved up into their hair and, thus, would be transferred into the care of their father's.
Branch wasn't too worried about keeping the baby safe but he was worried about doing something wrong that would potentially harm the babe growing within the egg.
What if he made a mistake or something...!?
Poppy saw the fear in Branch's face and she smirked with amusement.
"Don't get your shorts twisted into a knot, Mr. Grumpy, you'll do a great job and I'll be right there to help you!"
Poppy froze mid-rock with wide eyes and a small frown on her face.
She didn't let go of her swollen abdomen and, even tightened her grip around it a bit. She looked as if she had just bitten into a slice of the most sour lime in the universe and she lost that glow she had just a moment ago. The queen of the pop trolls was beginning to turn a sickly shade of green and she looked awful.
Branch could hear the alarm bells going off in his head and he instantly started to panic.
"P-Poppy! What's wrong!? Is the baby coming?!"
Poppy shook her head.
"N...N...N-gooooh...!" She blanched, covering her mouth with one hand.
Then it clicked.
"Oh."
Branch immediately leapt into action as he knew what was about to happen. Quickly, he dug around in a nearby bag and produced a small pail from within. Without wasting a second, the royal blue troll handed his wife the pail and Poppy lurched forth and proceeded to spew an odd concoction of glitter and bubbles.
The sound of Poppy puking her guts out made Branch cringe hard and he felt a huge pang of pity hit him straight in the heart. Seeing his wife look so sick made him want to kiss her and do everything possible to take her discomfort away. He knew he couldn't heal her sickness but he decided to at least try and make her feel better.
Branch hardly questioned the fact that she was hurling glitter as he hurried to stand behind her and rubbed her back in a soothing manner.
"It's okay, it's alright, just let it all out...there you go..."
Poppy kept on retching and gagging until the flood of glitter and bubbles finally came to an end.
Once her vomiting session came to a merciful end, she just collapsed against her husband, letting him hold her close for support. She couldn't help but moan pitifully as she became a limp lump of pink troll with her hair messy and all over the place. Her eyes were glazed over and she felt as though her stomach was doing flips and twists inside her.
Branch kept a tight hold on his queen, reached into his pocket with a spare hand, handed her a small pink vial of mouthwash and smiled a gentle but knowing smile.
"Here ya go, dear, this should help you feel better. It's gummy worm-flavoured mouth wash..."
Poppy took the vial and swished it about in her mouth to rid it of that disgusting taste in her mouth until she spat it out into the pail that Branch had fetched for her a minute or so before. She was impressed by how scary prepared he was...but, then again, this was the same troll who basically made a survival bunker and was crazy prepared when it came to pretty much everything.
Poppy managed a grin.
"Still think you won't be a good dad, Branch...?"
Branch flinched at the snark in his wife's voice but shook it off as Poppy doing what she did best:
Find the bright side to every situation.
Branch smiled quite smugly to himself as he (only after checking that Poppy had recovered from her bout of sickness) strolled to the back of the nursery and leapt up to a small wooden platform that Poppy hadn't noticed before which had been made behind the cradle.
The royal blue troll grabbed yet another cord that, like the one from before, hung from the ceiling.
After Branch gave the second cord a tug, the canopy above the two opened up and revealed an absolutely flawless night sky above. The moon was absent but that didn't make the skies any less breathtaking as the stars that were dotted in the dark navy blue sky twinkled brightly and delicately above them.
The starry sky was so beautiful that it almost brought a tear to Poppy's eye.
Branch hopped down from the canopy with an even bigger smile and walked towards his emotional wife, seeing Poppy look so emotional and happy made his heart constrict. He loved bringing a smile to his wife's face and whenever he saw such a look on her face it made him feel like he'd fulfilled one of his many purposes. Wrapping an arm around Poppy's shoulders, Branch leaned forwards and planted a featherlight kiss upon her cheek and then nuzzled her lovingly.
He could feel the fuzz tickle his nose while Poppy closed her eyes and rested her against the blue troll's shoulder and melted into his embrace.
She could hardly believe that she and the troll she loved with all her heart were about to start a family together and that made her feel so happy that each time she sung the morning song she'd put more energy than normal into it.
"You're my world, Queen Poppy..."
Poppy felt her heart melt at her husband's confession and simply responded accordingly whilst kissing Branch's nose.
"And you're mine, King Branch..."
