Kyoya gets a glimpse of New-Girl-Kagome before anyone else. Completely by chance. He didn't skip first period in order to see what kind of vehicle dropped her off, and Tamaki wasn't currently lying through his teeth to cover him to their instructor.

(Whatever, his friend was fine; Tamaki had once convinced a teacher that Kyoya had to sit out due to a bout of melancholia. Not depression- melancholia. Kyoya had lost a bet to Kaoru because of it, and fair a bit of faith in their homeroom teacher.)

Anyways. Kyoya watched, half bemused and half completely unsurprised as the newest student of Ouran Academy walked up the steps to their school.

Walked. She walked. Into their prestigious school filled with human piranhas.

By the time her feet had hit school grounds her eyes had found his. Logically it shouldn't have startled him; Kyoya was the only other person out here. He didn't wave to her. From the distance of the second floor's staircase, Kyoya couldn't tell the color, but it was something light.

"Are you brave or foolish?" Kyoya mused aloud, and impossibly, impossibly, she heard him from the ground floor.

"Neither," new girl bared her teeth up at him. "I'm capable." She didn't pause in climbing the staircase, and never once broke eye contact with Kyoya. Which was kind of terrifying, because as Kagome got closer, her eyes were revealed to be a piercing, unnatural gold.

"Headmaster Suoh prohibits costume lenses in class," Kyoya said, a non-question. He tilted his head in curiosity, and that, for some reason, seemed to calm the girl's agitation. She rolled her eyes hard, and the lenses didn't move in the slightest. They were real.

"Honey-sempai and Mori-sempai mentioned you, but they didn't say-"

Golden eyes snapped open, and Kagome looked irritatedly up at Kyoya. "No, they didn't mention me," she snarked, before shoving past Kyoya on the top of the stairs. Despite there having been plenty of room to walk around him. "If you can't stop lying to my face or at least show me where the office is, then do us both a favor and get out of my face."

Kyoya paused for a moment, tracking the bun on her head as she walked away from him. Kagome had walked to school. That alone was interesting enough.

"Wait," Kyoya said, despite the anger that flared in his gut at being ignored. He was a smart enough man to realize Kagome wouldn't be as easy to befriend as the other girls he catered to.

But moreso, Higurashi's file had stated she had brown eyes.

Interesting, said the beat of his heart, breaking the word into two clumsy syllables. Int'rest-ing, int'rest-ing.

The grin was back, curling the corners of his mouth. Kyoya cleared his throat, and offered Kagome a charming smile when she turned to face him. "The office is down this hall. Follow me."

It's like her eyes placed a physical weight on him. Something sung in his veins. Although it was probably the opposite, it felt weirdly powerful being the focus of such a sharp gaze. It was almost like regarding his reflection.

Kagome didn't follow. She caught up to him and matched his stride. Kyoya thought he preferred it that way. He also liked that she was looking at him with her carefully blank expression. He didn't bother to pretend to understand what that meant.

He smiled the entire way to the office.
