Chapter 8
It was now Tuesday, the Hotchner children were all in school, it was almost the end of the day. Aaron sat in class waiting to be dismissed. While at the Rossi house Erin had asked the two boys if they wanted to earn some money. To which they had both said yes. They would be cutting the grass, cleaning windows and other tasks which weren't done daily. But Erin wanted to speak to their father. She just wanted to check if it was okay if on Saturday's Aaron came round for a couple of hours to do the jobs she had asked. It had Aaron on edge.
When he had told his father, he had flipped out. He'd gotten so bad all the kids were sporting new bruises. Their father had agreed to meet with Erin today, so the children had spent their whole Sunday, and Monday once they got home from school cleaning the whole house top to bottom. They had cleaned so much that the house was actually looking normal for once, it wasn't covered in beer bottles and dust, the kids finally had all their clothes clean, not just a handful of them. It was in preparation for Erin coming. Aaron had been told to get home as soon as possible from school, Erin was coming over at five to talk to their father. But their father wanted to talk to the children first. Probably to warn them, to threaten them of what would happen if they weren't on their very best behaviour while the visitor was there.
Once they were dismissed Aaron grabbed his belongings and headed out the building to his sister's school. He got there and it wasn't long before his sisters were by his side, and they were heading home.
"Em, JJ. Don't forget Erin's coming today, you have to be on your best behaviour." Aaron told them as they walked down the street.
"How do you think dad's going to be when she's left?" Emily asked. All of them were nervous about today. This was the first time in who knows how many years, someone had been in their home. It was the first time someone had come to their own personal hell. They had no idea how he was going to react.
Aaron sighed. "I'm not sure. Any money I earn he's taking over half, so hopefully he won't be too mad. Plus, me getting this job will mean I can buy food more often for us and he doesn't have too." This had been one of the many conditions their father had given him after beating him senseless about getting the job.
"Will he stop hurting us then?" The young blonde asked, hopeful.
"I don't know JJ." The thirteen-year-old answered, unsure.
"Aaron." JJ called, after a few minutes of silence. Letting out a big yawn.
"Yeah munchkin."
"Can I get a piggyback? I'm tired." They had been cleaning until three this morning, their dad looming over them as they scrubbed the wooden floors with their toothbrushes, something he made them do after JJ had spilt some milk earlier in the day.
"Sure kiddo, hop on." Aaron dropped down to one knee as his sister jumped on his back. He tried not to groan as a bruise on his lower back was accidentally hit. He stood back up with her securely on his back, JJ's bag was transferred to Emily and his own bag had been brought round to rest on his front. With that they continued their walk home quietly.
When the kids got closer to their home, Aaron and Emily groaned silently, hoping that their father was in a semi good mood, Emily looked over at their younger sister, who had fallen asleep halfway home from school. The two older kids simultaneously gave a big sigh as they walked up to the front door. Just as the thirteen-year-old opened the front door, their father was right there. He was waiting.
"What took you so long?" A deep voice bellowed as Aaron and Emily walked through the door JJ still asleep on his back.
"Sorry dad, we got back as quickly as we could." Aaron tried to explain, adjusting his sister on his back.
"I expect quicker, especially when we have guests." He continued, stepping closer to his children who were still standing close to the door. "What is this?" Their father had asked, once he saw his youngest asleep.
"She was tired." The teen tried to explain to his father.
The father grabbed one of his youngest arms detaching her from his eldest, swinging her to the floor and waking her up as he put her on her two feet. "You're a lazy waste of space. Get in the closet now." He told her pointing to the door they all hated to be put behind. JJ stood swaying on her feet, trying not to cry at the shock of being jolted awake and screamed at in a matter of seconds.
"Dad, she's not done anything wrong." Aaron protested. But his calls went unheard as their dad grabbed JJ by her arm dragging her to the door pushing her inside and closing it behind him.
Aaron stepped a little closer trying to reason with his father. "Dad, that's not fair."
"Listen here boy." Frank said, jabbing his finger against Aaron's chest. "I do not care what you think. I am doing you a favour here letting you do this work. Letting you earn this money. Letting some strange bitch come into my house. You will respect me." The dad turned to his middle child who stood gripping her bag tightly, fear evident on her face. "And you…" He paused looking her up and down. "You can join your sister. I don't want to hear a peep from either of you. One noise while that woman is here, and you both will be in there the rest of the night do you understand?" Their father had threatened.
"Yes sir." Emily nodded.
"Get in." Reluctantly Emily walked over to the closet opening the door which let out a stream of JJ's cries, she walked in then closed the door behind her, which quietened the sobs of the blonde a little. Which a few seconds later stopped, signalling Emily had spoken to JJ and informed her properly what was going on.
"Get your shit up the stairs and make yourself presentable. She'll be here soon." Mr. Hotchner had ordered. He turned away from his son, sitting down on his chair.
Not even five minutes later had gone by, when Erin knocked on the door to the rundown home where the Hotchner children lived. She was eager to see them and check in. Ever since she had dropped them off on Saturday afternoon she had been in a constant state of worry. The door swung open revealing Aaron. "Hi." She smiled at the boy.
"Hi Erin, please come in. My dad's just in the bathroom." Aaron opened the door allowing the older woman to come into the home.
Erin stepped in trying her best not to judge everything based on the state of the house. Some people just didn't have a lot of money. In front of her as she walked in were a set of stairs which led to the upper level of the floor, each step was brown wood which was chipping off. As she stepped further into the house, she saw the living room which had a brown sofa, the leather worn away and a big brown leather chair which was also well used. The leather had come away more on the arms and in the spot where someone sat. Erin moved over to the sofa taking a seat as she continued to look round.
In the corner of the room there was a big TV, the remote to which sat on the arm of the chair. There was a coffee table in the middle of the room which she could see the white paint having chipped away on. All the furniture looked old. All of it looked like it desperately needed to be replaced. The walls she could see were most bare except a few pictures of what looked to be the family back when their mother was alive. She could spot the young Aaron, and the young Emily. But she couldn't spot one picture of JJ. It seemed like they all stopped after the mother had died. She could only imagine how depressed the father would have been after the death of his spouse. She knew if she was to lose Dave, she had no idea how she was going to function.
Erin looked at Aaron who was standing near the doorway to the kitchen. "Would you like a drink?" He asked.
"A water if you don't mind?" The blonde asked.
"Of course." With that Aaron walked out the room quickly to get the glass of water, as requested.
Erin heard the elder Hotchner before she saw him. He came thundering down the stairs. Very heavy footed she thought quickly. She stood up as he walked into the living room and extended her arm to shake his. "Hi, I'm Erin Rossi." She smiled at the man wearing worn jeans and a dark button up shirt.
"Frank Hotchner." He said in his deep voice, shaking Erin's hand before taking a seat in his chair.
Erin followed, sitting back on the sofa. Taking the water which Aaron had just brought in for her. She quickly thanked him and took a sip. "Did Aaron tell you why I wanted to speak to you?" She asked.
"He mentioned something about a job."
"Yes, I have a thirteen-year-old son too and I thought maybe they could earn themselves some money, by doing a bit of work." Erin had told him, placing the cup on the coffee table.
"Yes, of course. It's a good age for them to learn about work." Frank agreed. Nodding along.
Erin nodded too. "It is. I just wanted to check if it would be okay with you the kind of work he would be doing?" She tried not to judge the man too much, but she was getting creepy vibes from the man.
"Oh yeah, what kind of things? I might be able to rope him into doing something around here sometime." Frank let out a quick chuckle before glancing at his son who was standing next to the TV he frowned at him so Aaron moved away sitting beside Erin.
"Well, I was thinking about cutting the grass, I have plenty of windows which need washing, cleaning the cars, maybe some gardening, painting our fences. What do you think? Is it too much? Aaron, would those jobs be okay for you?" Erin answered Frank, before she turned to face the young Hotchner sat next to her.
"I could handle them, Erin. I won't let you down." Aaron replied, making sure to be polite.
"Yeah, I believe he could do it. My Aaron here is a hard worker. I think he can manage anything."
"That's perfect. My son Derek is looking forward to getting to have his friend over more. He's really glad they are both friends and can earn some money this way." Erin said happily.
Everyone saw the slight roll in Frank's eyes as he wasn't interested in Erin talking about her children. "That's great. I'm happy for your son." He lied, sitting back in his seat getting comfortable.
"Oh, where are those sweet girls? I hoped they might be here." the blonde had asked, noticing that the two young girls weren't around, and ignoring the rudeness she could feel coming from the father.
"They are with my sister. I didn't think they needed to be around. Did they do something wrong when they were with you? I'll ground them if they did." Frank asked, prepared to beat the shit out of his two youngest if they had misbehaved.
"Oh no! No. They were perfect little angels. My daughter Penelope has been going through a bit of a growth spurt, so I have some clothes for them if they want them." Erin had reassured him, seeing that he had started to close his hand into a fist.
"Oh, that's so kind of you, we don't need them at the moment, I just did a big shop the other week. Maybe they will come in handy in a few months." He waved her off. He didn't do charity.
"Well would you like me to leave them here or…" She had offered, wanting the girls to have some of Penelope's old clothes.
"Can you give them Aaron to bring back on Saturday, I need to go through their old clothes I think first before we take in anymore. It's only a small home so we don't have much space."
"Of course." The two adults spoke for another 5 minutes before Erin announced she should probably leave and get home to her husband and children. She told Aaron she would be by on Saturday at ten am to pick him up, then would bring him home later on in the day but she would provide him with lunch and dinner if he stayed that long. With that she headed home.
The Hotchner father, though once he saw Erin drive away, slammed the front door and turned toward his son. He looked at him briefly before heading to the closet which held JJ and Emily. He swung the door open showing the two girls sat at the very back, whatever they had been whispering about stopped. The father reached in pulling them both out by their hair.
Aaron sighed. It was going to be a long night.
The rest of the night, their father gave them another beating, feeling that they had deserved it, not believing Erin when she said the girls were on their best behaviour. He found the glass that was left on the coffee table by Mrs. Rossi, and he knocked it over. "You two!" Frank yelled, pointing to the two girls, "Clean that fucking mess up!"
Just before they started to clean the mess up, Frank went over and gave them a few good kicks before he left his kids and went up to his room.
Aaron ran to the girls', "Are you two, okay?" He said getting down on the floor so he could check them over if need be.
"I-I'm fine," Emily tells her brother, as she looks over their sister, who was quietly crying.
That night, the kids finished up the mess and they all went up to Emily's room, and crawled into bed. Making sure his sisters were okay, and comfortable, Aaron waited for them both to fall asleep, before he went to his room and crawled into his own bed.
It took too long for Saturday to come around. It seemed their father was getting angrier and angrier by the day. He had been taking that anger out on his three children. Mainly the youngest, but they had all been on the receiving end of his wrath. It was getting close to what would have been their mothers' birthday. Aaron was really debating not going to the Rossi home today. But he desperately needed some money for himself and his sisters. The night before their father had stayed downstairs all evening so none of them had been able to have their dinner.
It worried Aaron how his dad was going to be today, so he made the best plan he could. While his father was sleeping early this morning, he went downstairs grabbing a couple of empty beer bottles and started washing them out, as best as he could before filling them with water. He had gotten the girls something to drink. He had used the old beer bottles because if they broke their dad wouldn't flip out about his property being damaged. He was going to take every precaution he could while he wasn't here. He then grabbed two slices of bread to make a sandwich they could split, a questionable banana, and a small handful of biscuits.
He took it all up to Emily's bedroom where both girls were sleeping. It was nearing 10am so he needed to wake them before he left. "Em. JJ." He said soft and quietly, putting a hand on Emily's side.
The brunette girl's eyes opened quickly. "What." She panicked a little. This was the way they all seemed to wake up if someone woke them. Afraid it was their father.
"Sorry Em. I'm going soon." He told his sister before carefully putting his arm on JJ who woke up slightly breathless with panic. "Sorry Jayje." He offered them both a half smile.
"I don't like mornings." JJ grumbled shuffling closer to her brother leaning her head on his chest.
"I know." He said softly running his hand down her back to sooth her, but careful not to hurt any injuries she had. "I'm just waking you up because I'm going to Erin's soon, so I need to tell you both a couple of things."
"What?" Emily mumbled as she rubbed her eyes.
"I've cleaned those bottles and put some water in them, and I've brought up a bit of food for you both so you can stay in here and out of dad's way for today until I get back." He told his sister pointing to the things on Emily's dresser he had placed for them.
"Will he come in here?" JJ asked innocently, not wanting to feel the wrath of her father again.
Aaron sighed and shrugged. "He shouldn't, just try not to make too much noise and he won't even know you're here. He'll probably go out drinking early because it's Saturday so you shouldn't have to hide for long." Aaron answered, running his hand through his sisters' hair.
Emily offered a half smile to her brother. "Okay."
"I'm gonna go outside," Aaron helped move the sleepy JJ over to lean on Emily so he could stand up. He headed to the bedroom door. "I'll see you later, okay?"
"Bye." Emily said quietly, lying back a little so she could go back to sleep too. Something they did more of, the more they were hurt.
Aaron didn't wait outside for too long for Erin to pick him up. He was able to make it outside before his dad saw him, which he gave a sigh of relief for. Once Erin had pulled up in the driveway, Aaron gave one last look back at the house before getting into the vehicle.
"Good morning Aaron," Erin greeted, as she started to back out of the driveway.
"Morning," the young teen replied, after getting his seatbelt on. He sat back sighing quietly as he did so, glad to be out the house, but also hoping to relieve some of his anxiety about leaving his sisters behind.
Driving down the road, Erin asked, "How're you this morning?" She glanced over at her son's friend quickly before turning back to look at where she was driving.
"I'm all right, thanks for asking," Aaron answered.
"That's good to hear. How's your sister's?"
Aaron looked to Erin to see her smile. He was glad to see that the woman had liked his sisters when they visited. Once they had gotten home during the week, he worried that they had all been too much, but by the smile she was flashing he guessed that they hadn't been too much of a bother. "They're good. They were just getting up when I left. They seem to be doing good," Aaron responded, trying to be honest.
"That's good to hear."
The rest of the drive went by smoothly, just a little small chit chat as Erin drove to the house. About a good fifteen minutes later, they pull into the driveway of the Rossi home. Aaron already spots Derek outside in the front yard, getting things ready for them to do some yard work. Derek looked over and saw his mom pull into the driveway, he set down the weed wacker and walked over to the vehicle. "Hey mom, Aaron." He said fist bumping his friend as he got out to the car.
"Hey sweetheart, are you two ready to get to work?" Erin asked her son and his friend.
"Of course! I'm ready to make some money!" Derek exclaimed as he followed his mom, with Aaron in tow. The dark-skinned boy had told his friend in school that he was going to put all his money away because when he could drive, he didn't want an old car he wanted a brand-new sports car, something flashy which would attract all the girls, so he was more than excited to finally be getting to work and filling up his savings account.
"Alright, this is what I want you two to be doing," Erin tells them. Making sure they were both listening, she tells them, "Go ahead and mow the yard today, and the weed whacking, if there's enough time, you two can wash the cars."
"Sounds good mom," Derek tells her.
Aaron nodded in agreement, then Erin continued. "We'll see where you two are at, and then we can discuss everything else that needs done." She had more than enough that needed doing and was sure if they finished quick enough, she could find something else for them to do.
Both boys nodded their heads, and Erin told them to go ahead and get to work on the yard work while it was still early in the day. Derek took up the lawn mower, while Aaron went ahead and did the weed whacking, after the areas that Derek had previously mowed. They would even take turns mowing sections and weed whacking. Almost two hours had gone by when they finally finished their mowing. They both went inside to get some cool air and get some water to drink. As they walked into the house, they saw Derek's siblings racing down the stairs.
"Hi Derek! We're gonna go play a game, you want to join?" Spencer asked, as he spotted his older brother walking in.
"Maybe later," Derek tells him, as he and Aaron continue to walk into the kitchen.
Spencer let out an "okay" as he went into the living room.
They both walk into the kitchen, and Derek goes over and opens the fridge door, "Hey mom."
"Oh, hey boys, how's it going, getting the yard done?" Erin asked them.
"We just got it finished. We got the mowing down and the weeding done too. Just wanted to come in, get some water, and about to start washing the cars." Derek tells his mom, as they filled their glasses with water.
The boys took their waters with them outside, after Aaron double checked to make sure it was okay to do that. Once they went back on the front porch, they placed their glasses on top of the table, before they got started on washing up the cars. "Maybe soon, we can have you and your sisters back over one night for another sleepover. Get my siblings off my back," Derek joked, as he sprayed the cars with water from the hose.
"Sounds like a good idea," Aaron agreed, as he started to get the car all soapy to start washing.
"Your sisters ever bug you at times? It seems like I can't get a break from Spencer and Penelope. I love them to death, but sometimes, I just need my space. You know?" Derek asked, as he also grabbed a sponge to start washing the cars.
Aaron froze momentarily, he'd never really thought about it that much. Did his sisters bug him, not really, occasionally he found them too clingy, but he understood why. He understood that their dad had made them this way with his abuse. Would he like space from it all? Sure. But he had to be there to protect his sisters. He loved them and didn't want them to get hurt so it didn't matter what he wanted because his sisters were small and defenceless. He tried to come up with an acceptable answer for his friend because he was sure Derek wouldn't understand the truth. "Sure, I love my sisters too, but I'd love my own space. They both come into my room all the time. It sucks." He groaned hoping it was believable enough for his friend.
"I'd hate that. Spencer and Penelope know never to come into my room unless I invite them in. It's the only place I can go without them. Do your sisters go into your room all the time?" Derek called out from one side of the car, while Aaron was washing the other side.
"Yeah, JJ most of the time, shares a bed with me or Emily. But they just come in whenever they need me really." Aaron shrugged.
"Oh, is that because your dad works all the time?" Derek asked. Going to pick up the hose to wash the suds off his side of the car. He was so used to washing cars he got them done pretty quickly now.
"Yeah." Aaron said remembering he had revealed that bit of information to Derek. Sometimes it was hard to keep up with what he told his friends and what he didn't. Lying was a lot harder than it looked to be. "Hey but I'm getting some space today right, and we're hanging so that's cool." He said changing the conversation a bit, back to what they were currently doing rather than to his mess of a family.
"Totally. My mom usually tells me off because I hang with the wrong crowd or something, and she never used to let most of my friends' round, but she really likes you and your sisters so you can come here more if you want, or I could come to you one weekend or something."
"Yeah, that sounds good. I'm glad your mom likes me. I tried not to come off bad or something last time."
"Nah, you're cool." Derek waved him off. "Let's get these cars done then we can go play some games or we can see if my dad will take us to the field and we can play some ball."
"Sounds good."
The boys get back to work, to finish up washing the vehicles. They get done with a few hours left to spare, and Erin agreed to let them hang out a little bit before she had to take Aaron back home. The boys had gone and played around with the football. It was nearing the time that Erin had to take the young teen back home. Aaron said his goodbyes to Derek and followed his mom out the door.
"Thank you for dropping me off Erin. I appreciate it. You didn't have to." Aaron told Mrs. Rossi when she had pulled up in his driveway.
"You're welcome. Is your dad not home?" The mom asked, noticing the run-down car was gone from the driveway.
"He'll be at work. It's fine." Aaron tried to assure her.
Erin shook her head. She didn't approve of this. "I'd like to come in, if that's okay. I want to check on the girls. They are too young to be left alone." Erin told him, somewhat sternly, and just wanting to see for herself that the girls were doing okay.
"My dad won't be happy if I let someone in without him being here." the thirteen-year-old had told her, worried about her finding out what actually goes on in their home.
"I'll just be 5 minutes. What are you guys doing for dinner?" Erin had told him.
"I'll cook something, or we'll order in." He said trying to reassure the mother "Honestly Erin."
"Come on. Let's go check on your sisters." Erin told him, as she opened her car door. She wasn't giving him any room for argument.
"Okay. They might be up in their room. They spend a lot of time there." the dark-haired boy had told her, as he followed her up to the front door. He hoped and prayed to someone that everything on the other side of that door was okay.
"That's fine." Erin replied.
Once they had gotten inside, Aaron didn't see his sisters, so he walked close to the stairs, "Emily, JJ, can you two come down here please?" He glanced at Erin who was standing not too far away watching him closely. He tried not to show anything on his face.
A few short minutes later, Emily comes walking out, standing just above the first step, with JJ right behind her, holding tightly to her sister's hand. "Yeah?"
"Come down here," Aaron tells them. "Erin is here, and she wants to say hi to you guys." He smiled up to his sisters hoping Erin would take it as a good sign.
Feeling a bit of a relief, and worrisome at the same time, Emily and JJ slowly made their way down the stairs stopping just beside their brother once they got to the bottom of the stairs. Erin walks over to them, noticing the freshly new bruises both girls are sporting. "Hey girls, how are you?"
Emily looks to her brother, who gives her an encouraging smile, then she turns to face back to Erin, "We're okay. We were just playing a game."
"I'm glad to hear that. Have you girls' been home alone all day?" Erin asked, concerned for the two girls. These girls were too young to do any kind of caring for themselves.
"No," Emily starts, shaking her head no. "Our dad left a little bit ago. He knew our brother was going to be home soon, so he went ahead and took off." She paused looking at her brother who was cracking his fingers nervously. "He had work." She confirmed, hoping that would be a better reason for the mother.
"All right," Erin replies. She crouched to the floor to look over the girls. "What happened? Where'd the bruises come from?" She noticed how Emily had a bruise appearing on her cheek, and JJ had one appearing on her chin and forehead, and how little the clothes they wore revealed there were bruises there too.
JJ looks between Emily and Aaron, not sure what she should be doing, she ends up hiding behind Emily, as she listens to her sister talk to Mrs. Rossi. "The bruises? Oh, right, they were an accident, JJ and I were playing around and got a little too rough. It was just purely an accident." Emily lies trying to convince this woman they were okay.
Erin looks both girls up and down, not quite believing Emily's response to her question. She knows she should be calling child services, but she doesn't have enough proof to warrant a phone call to them. Instead, she pulls out a card with her name and number, and even Dave's number written on the back. "Well, if you guys need anything, and I mean anything at all, here is my card with my personal cell phone on it. I even wrote Dave's number on the back of it, so if you guys need anything, you can call one of us. I mean it, call me anytime, day or night, and I will always answer." She emphasised.
Aaron takes the card from her, inspects it, and looks back up at Erin, "Thank you. We'll be sure to call if we need anything. We'll be fine, I promise."
"Okay, if you're sure. I'll leave you kids then," Erin told them, unsure of her decision in leaving.
Erin walked herself to the door, with Aaron right behind her to make sure the door gets locked. She said her goodbyes after giving one last look to the girls', she was gone and out the front door. Aaron made sure the front door was shut and locked before turning to face his sisters and leaned against the door. Grateful they hadn't been caught out.
"Why did she want to see us?" Emily asked, curiously.
Aaron shrugged his shoulders, and sighed, "I think it was because she didn't see you two when she was here last time. Just wanted to check in."
"I think she suspects Aaron," Emily tells him, panicking slightly. "I'm not sure if we can continue to hide these injuries from her." Indicates to her face where she knew a very painful bruise was coming up.
"I think she does too, but we have to do what we need to, to protect us." Aaron tells her. "Nobody can know, otherwise someone finds out and we get split up in foster care." It was his worst nightmare being split from his sisters. They all cared for each other so much, and he couldn't imagine life without them.
"I don't want to get split up," JJ tells them, talking for the first time since Aaron got home. She moves over to Aaron pulling Emily along and taking hold of his hand wanting to keep close to them both.
"We won't, as long as we keep this to ourselves." Aaron reassures them. "I will do everything in my power to protect you two." He promises them ruffling both their hair.
Emily gives a sigh, and goes over and sits on the couch, "You can't make a promise you can't keep Aaron. You know better than I do, that dad will do anything to get to us." She crosses her arms over her chest getting defensive.
"I know," Aaron walks JJ over to the sofa sitting her down next to Emily. He looks them both in the eyes, so they know how serious he is. "and I will try my hardest to protect you two, that I can promise," Aaron promises them.
The oldest goes and gets a start on making dinner for the three of them and making sure the house was tidy before the end of the night, when they would all start getting ready for bed, waiting for the moment their father would walk in the front door.
