Rose's hands trembled as she leaned over the railing of the beach house. She and her mother, Hermione, had moved here when Rose had been a child. For as long as she could remember, it had just been the two of them. Hermione had never told Rose who her father was, despite Rose having asked about it when she was younger.
Now, Rose was getting married and she wanted nothing more than for her father to walk her down the aisle. On a whim, she'd gone through her mother's things, looking for anything that could give her a clue as to who her father was. She managed to narrow it down to three men; Severus Snape, Bill Weasley, and Cedric Diggory. She'd sent letters to all three of them, inviting them to her wedding. She hoped that once she met them,
Hermione was taking out the rubbish when a man walking down the beach caught her eye. She shook her head. It couldn't be him. She hadn't seen him since the war. She laughed at her own silliness. Rose was getting married and she'd invited her two best friends to come up for the wedding. Ginny and Luna had already written back saying they'd come.
Now, she was staring a man on the beach, who she was absolutely certain could not be Severus Snape. She tossed the bag in the bin and headed back inside. She hadn't thought about Severus in twenty years, not since Rose had been born. She knew there was a chance he was Rose's father, but he'd never been the type to want children.
Rose opened the door to the boat house leading the three men inside. They'd all arrived the same day.
"I'm the one who invited you. I'm Rose Granger, by the way. The three of you knew my mother, Hermione. I think one of you is my father," she stated, holding her breath that they'd believe her. Bill was the first to speak.
"You're twenty?"
"I am," Rose answered. Severus and Cedric exchanged glances. Rose could tell they were thinking about to when they'd known Hermione. Rose looked like a carbon copy of her mother, so none of the men's features stood out.
"I see, and does your mother know you invited us out here?" Severus asked. Rose shook her head.
"No, she doesn't know that I even know about the three of you," Rose admitted.
"I don't know if I'm your father or not, but I'd like to take you to lunch, get to know you," Cedric stated. Rose smiled, her top teeth just a little longer than the rest, a trait she'd inherited from her mother.
"I'd love that," she answered. Bill and Severus made similar offers for dinner and lunch the day after, offers that Rose generously accepted.
Hermione stood on the balcony looking out at the sea. Luna and Ginny were on either side of her.
"I don't know what's going through Rose's head. She's so young, too young to tie herself down to someone. I mean, when I was her age-"
"You slept with three boys, including my brother?" Ginny asked, laughing. Hermione's face flushed at the memory of her and Bill.
"True, I did do that, but I thought we were all going to die in the war."
"But we didn't," Luna said, raising her glass for a toast. Hermione and Ginny toasted their still being alive.
Lunch with Cedric had gone perfectly, but Rose hadn't felt a connection with him, not like she'd been hoping. They had some things in common, but nothing that made her believe he was her father.
"I was at a party, a victory part when your mother walked in. She was alone, having dumped her boyfriend. I think she might have been looking for someone, someone that wasn't there. Instead, she found me. I was alone also. We started talking about the people we'd lost, started talking about what we planned to do now. She was going to finish school. I was looking to start a business. I did in the end. I didn't know that she'd had a child. I mean, I would have been here if I'd known about you, Rose. I'm not the kind of man who would abandon my family."
"Do you have a family now?" Rose asked.
"No, I'm married to my business. I'm a salesman, make good money. I'd like to help you in any way you need though. I don't know if you're my daughter or not, but you are a brilliant young woman who I would be proud to call mine."
Rose smiled, wondering if she was Cedric's daughter. It was possible. The lunch ended with him picking up the check, saying it was the least he could do.
They were back to the boat house when Hermione stepped out.
"Cedric?" she asked, her eyes wide.
"Hermione, it's been a long time."
"It has," she agreed. "What are you doing here?"
"Rose invited me, Severus and Bill," Cedric answered. "She wanted to find her father."
"Bill and Severus are here too?" Hermione asked, unable to keep the disbelief from her voice. She looked at Rose.
"Yes, you wouldn't tell me who my father was, so I'm trying to find out on my own," she answered as Bill and Severus emerged from the boat house. Hermione looked at them, a smile starting to form on her face.
"Rose, go on inside. I need to talk to these three for a minute," Hermione said. Rose nodded, heading inside, her sandals scuffing the wooden steps as she walked. Hermione looked at her three ex-lovers.
"Rose invited all three of you?"
"She did. She did the research and determined we were the mostly three to have fathered her," Severus said. Hermione nodded, her eyes lingering on Severus' face. It had been so long since they'd seen each other, so long since they'd shared that night of passion. It had been just after the war, emotions had been running high, they'd both been happy to just be alive. Or maybe it had been something more. She'd always had a bit of a crush on him, even as a student.
"How are you doing, Hermione?" Bill asked. Hermione noticed he wasn't wearing wedding ring. She knew he'd married a French girl named Fleur.
"I'm alright, why don't we sit down, get some drinks and catch up, all three of us?" she suggested, part of her wishing she could just spend more time with Severus. She led them up to the balcony to the table with sepia umbrella, soon the four of them were joined by Ginny and Luna who had come out to see what was going on.
Rose watched her mother laughing with the three men. She watched as Hermione's hand slid into Severus' lap. She watched as Bill and Cedric talked about the old times, about things that had happened when they were younger. Rose watched, hoping she could pick out if any of them had mannerisms that she might have inherited. She didn't see anything, which didn't surprise her. Most of that kind of thing was learned behavior.
"Rose?" Scorpius' voice called from the back door. Rose let him, giving him a quick kiss.
"They came, all three of them."
"Really? Do you know which one's your father yet?"
"No. They're all nice though. Although, I'm pretty sure my mum's still in love with Severus. Look at how she keeps leaning towards him, their hands keep touching," Rose said, looking out the window again.
"Maybe they'll get married next," Scorpius laughed. Rose frowned. The idea of her mother marrying unsettled her for some reason. Maybe it was because for the longest time it had just been the two of them. Then again, she was marrying Scorpius, so that would change things anyway.
Everyone was still outside talking when Rose bid Scorpius goodnight and headed to bed. She dreamed about the three men, what each one would have been like as a father. None of them had been there for her, had they known about her? If so, why hadn't one of them stepped up? Rose woke with her heart filled with sorrow and her head full of questions.
"Do you really not know which one is my father?" she asked at breakfast.
"No, I honestly don't. It was the week after the war. I told you about the war."
"You did, how Uncle Harry and Uncle Ron were there and fought bravely."
"Exactly. I was thrilled to be alive, drunk on the adrenaline of having won. I did a lot of things that week, Rose. I know you can't understand, but it was like everything, everyone was celebrating. I acted on my feelings without worrying about the consequences. That's where you came from."
"Did you tell any of them about me? Did any of them even ask?"
"I wrote them, but Bill was marrying someone else. Cedric was... he had his own career he was was focusing on."
"And Severus?" Rose asked. Hermione smiled, a soft smile of remembering good times.
"He wanted to come live with us. I told him not to. I wasn't looking for a relationship. I wasn't looking to be tied down to anything or anyone. Now, now I'm not so opposed to the idea," Hermione said, looking out towards the boat house. "You're so young, Rose. Why are you tying yourself down so early?"
"Because I love Scorpius, I want to spend my life with him," she answered.
"That's a good answer. Now that you know about all my affairs, which one are you hoping is your father?"
"I don't know. I'm having lunch with Severus tonight and dinner with Bill, to get to know them better," Rose said.
"Good, they are all wonderful men. Maybe that's the reason I never settled, too many choices," Hermione said after a moment.
Lunch was a quiet affair. Rose and Severus did have a lot in common. They both loved to read, both had the same taste in books, one that Hermione shared as well. Rose could see why her mother had loved Severus, why she might still love Severus.
"Hermione was one of my brightest students."
"You were her teacher?"
"She never mentioned that part?"
"No, she didn't. I can see why she fell for you then though."
"And now?"
"You still love her, don't you?" Rose asked.
"I do. Actually after everyone had gone to bed, she and I spent more time catching up. Rose, if it's not too forward, I would like to ask your blessing for me to marry your mother. I don't know if I'm your father biologically or not, but I'd still like to be in your life."
"You have my blessing," Rose answered, thinking about how flirty the pair had been last night. Hermione and Severus were a good match, maybe even better than she and Scorpius.
Rose thought her life couldn't get any more complicated when she sat down to dinner with Bill. He was the one she knew the most about. He was her Aunt Ginny's brother. Aunt Ginny and Hermione had been friends forever. Rose could see why her mother would have slept with Bill. He was attractive in a way. Rose and Bill didn't have much in common, not like with Severus. Bill worked for a bank doing foreign acquisitions. It all sounded incredibly dull to Rose.
"Your mother was staying at our house. We'd all come back from the battlefield, thankful we were alive. At the time, your mother was dating my younger brother. They had a row, I don't know what about, but she came to my room, crying about him. I never meant for it to lead to anything, but it did. We weren't in love, we weren't even close friends. I was just there. I know I haven't been here for you, Rose. I knew about you, but I'd married and I didn't want to ruin what I'd found. It ended up falling apart anyway. I know I might not be your father, but I'd like to be in your life, if you'd allow me?"
"I'd like that," Rose answered, realizing all three of the men wanted to be her father.
"I don't know what to do, Scorp. I feel like if I find out the truth, I'll break two of their hearts," Rose confessed. Scorpius and she were sitting on the porch swing that looked out onto the ocean.
"Maybe don't find out then? This whole thing is getting out of hand. Suddenly your mother's in love with someone from her past. Did you say he was going to propose to her?"
"Yes, I gave him my blessing."
"See, that's what I mean. You invited them here to find out the truth and now, now you don't even want to know it."
"I just don't want to hurt any of them."
"Then have all three of them walk you down, give the people something to talk about?" Scorpius suggested. Rose's face broke into a smile.
"That's perfect! I need to run the idea by them, but thank you," she exclaimed, kissing Scorpius before darting down the stairs to the boat house.
The day of the wedding dawned a bright shade of pink. Rose couldn't help but be nervous. Everyone was gathered on the beach under the white awning. The music swelled and Rose looked to the three men. Severus took her left arm, Bill her right. Cedric trailed them closely as they walked down the aisle. Rose smiled seeing Scorpius standing there. She was handed off to him. The couple turned to face the minister.
"Do you, Rose Minerva Granger take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
"I do," Rose said, her voice ringing with confidence. The minister turned to Scorpius.
"Do you, Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"
"I do," Scorpius replied. The rings were held out and Rose felt like the whole world was perfect as Scorpius slid the ring onto her finger. She did the same to him, hoping he felt the same way.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife, you may kiss the bride."
Scorpius' lips crashed against Rose's as everyone erupted in cheers at the couple. They moved to the side, their fingers intertwined. Hermione and Severus had wanted to be married as soon as possible to make for lost time. Rose and Scorpius had agreed to let them get married the same day. Rose watched her mother walk down the aisle. Severus was already standing there from walking Rose down. Rose laid her head on Scorpius' shoulder as she watched her mother and her potential father exchange the same vows she'd just made. Rose could see the happiness in her mother's eyes. Hermione and Severus shared a passionate kiss that also resulted in loud cheers mostly from Ginny and Luna. Rose and Scorpius and Hermione and Severus walked back down the aisle to the reception that had been set up a bit further down the beach.
"Rose," Bill said, walking over to her followed by Severus and Cedric.
"Yes?"
"We talked it over and we knew that while we could get paternity tests, find out who your father is, we decided that we couldn't do that. All three of us love you like a daughter in the week we've spent with you. Would you be alright if all three of us claimed you as our daughter?"
Rose's face lit up.
"I would love that, thank you. Knowing you three has got to be the best wedding present ever," she stated.
"Good, now, I'm first for the daddy daughter dance simply because I just married your mother," Severus said, taking Rose's hand and leading her onto the dance floor. Rose watched the world whirl by. She'd invited them all because she'd felt like she needed to know the truth, but in reality, all she needed was a chance to know her father, and now, now she knew him, even if she didn't know which one had sired her, she knew her father.
