I hope you guys know that the pain has faded, now. I'm fine ^^ It makes me feel better that at least he's not in any pain anymore. It kinda helped me: I've decided to try and get more out of life, y'know? Not let things phase me. I refuse to get upset over petty little things anymore, like boys or attention. It's just a waste of time!
In other lighter news, I went ice-skating! ^^ I had an epic wipeout, and I fell on my stomach so hard that I was laying there while this group of strangers crowded around to help and the Skate Guards had to take me off the rink. The aching faded in like, two minutes and I was back on the court xD But I couldn't get my momentum back, I was so frustrated!
On to the story!
"Twistedfoot! Move your fat tail, you're on patrol."
Twistedfoot hissed at the sound of Rabbitflame's voice. "I'm moving, you idiot."
Stripetail spat at her. "Cut her some slack, you heartless pest. She's still recovering."
Twistedfoot sighed. Everyone had been on edge since Haretooth's assassination. All accept her, of course. Grassleap, Rabbitflame and Mistfire seemed to be getting special treatment. Nobody knew which tom was supposed to be upset, as the father had never been revealed, but many suspected it was Shadefire.
"Be quiet, will you?" Twistedfoot growled at her sister, pushing through the entrance.
The group consisted of Rabbitflame, Stripetail, Twistedfoot and Crystalheart. They headed out to the ThunderClan border, much to the relief of Twistedfoot and Rabbitflame. Neither one wanted to see where Rabbitflame's littermate had been found, throat slit open and lifeless.
The patrol was uneventful. Nobody talked much, and Rabbitflame was given the honor to mark the border. She and her family had been given a lot of luxury, lately. Twistedfoot was partly surprised that the father had not come out to get a bit of the royalty yet.
Twistedfoot walked back through the entrance when it was over. She found herself becoming more and more agitated with the cats around her.
Suddenly, the familiar black dust materialized beside the she-cat. Twistedfoot looked over. To her surprise, it didn't form into Phantomstep as it always did. This was the strikingly recognizable body of Grayfoot. "Meet us at the river." With that, he fell into a pile of black dust that disappeared once it hit the ground.
"Talking to the air, Twistedfoot?"
Twistedfoot turned around. It was her father. "Whatever, Swiftbolt. I'll do as I like. What do you want?"
"Your mother is recovering. Didn't know whether or not you'd care to find out."
Twistedfoot sniffed. She had barely given any thought to Runningshine's ailing state. "Great," she simply said. "Now she'll have enough strength to sass me again."
Swiftbolt snarled, shoving a paw to her throat and slamming her against the Tallrock. His force shocked Twistedfoot. "You better pipe down about you mother, you piece of fox-dung. You may not like her, but around me you're kissing her paws, you got that?" He pressed harder on the last bit.
Twistedfoot was gasping for breath. "Alright, alright! J-just let me go.." She was thrashing, trying to pull his paw away.
"I can't hear you," Swiftbolt hissed in her face.
"I'm sorry," she gasped, louder this time.
"Good," he growled, pulling his paw away and dropping back on all fours, standing back. Twistedfoot fell to the ground, crouched upon the grass. She was holding her throat in her paws, gasping heavily to regain her breath. When she looked up, she saw that the whole Clan had been watching. "Now move along." With that, Swiftbolt walked away.
Twistedfoot stood defiantly, refusing to show weakness to the crowd. She put a "don't-mess-with-me" frown on her face, and walked out of camp.
By "river", Grayfoot must have meant the stream that cut between WindClan and ThunderClan. Twistedfoot followed the usual route, and stopped by the riverbank. She waited for the clouds of black dust to appear.
Suddenly, dirt before her paws began to swirl and turn into a darker color. The dusty substance rose out of the ground in a tornado of sorts, and stopped to reveal not Grayfoot, not Phantomstep, but the whole group.
Phantomstep set a paw forward. "Fancy meeting you here," he joked in his usual smooth and monotone voice.
Twistedfoot rolled her shoulders, nodding in Grayfoot's direction. "He told me to come."
"Aye. Before we all watched you get abused by your so-called 'father'."
"I dealt with that little situation. Now what is it?"
"Dealt with?" Grayfoot rasped, grinning his ugly grin. His one good eye showed laughter. "That's an overstatement."
Twistedfoot ignored him.
"We have decided your next mission," Greenstar announced.
"You've been training hard in the field of WindClan tactics, and will do so for the next two moons," Vinetail added. "Though, you're doing exceptionally well, so we've decided to reward you."
"Reward me?" Twistedfoot repeated.
"Yes," Quickfang purred.
Longwhisker's tail lashed with anticipation. "Phantomstep will explain."
"Thank you for the introduction, gentlemen," Phantomstep mewed, slight impatience laden in his voice. He turned his head back to Twistedfoot. "We've chosen your next victim."
Twistedfoot's eyes flew wide open. "So soon? I've only just recently killed Haretooth!"
"If you kill your cats too far apart, the Clan won't understand that it's an act of vengeance, and simply think it's a warning by a rogue or rival Clan. You want them to understand that they've done something wrong."
Twistedfoot's head lowered. "I don't know if I can do it again."
"It's easy, Twistedfoot," Quickfang replied. He seemed to be the kindest of the group, oddly enough for a Dark Forest cat. "Just don't think about it."
"Easy for you to say!" Twistedfoot countered.
Phantomstep walked behind Twistedfoot, curling his tail around her chest as well as his head while his legs and torso took her backside. "Hush. It's simple. We'll be by your side the whole time."
Twistedfoot felt awkward in the Dark Forest cat's seducing embrace. "Okay… fine. But how is this helping? They don't even know it's me, so how would they know to respect me?"
Phantomstep seemed to look up at the others. All their eyes flashed, once again sharing that mutual thought which Twistedfoot still couldn't decipher. He turned back to her, seeming to regain his senses. "Yes, but they'll understand that they've done something wrong, and will try to fix it. Don't you want a good, pure Clan?"
Twistedfoot looked at her paws. "Well, yeah…"
"Perfect. Than this is what you need to do." Phantomstep unwrapped himself from around her, joining the group of other dark warriors and sitting properly.
"So who is it?" Twistedfoot asked. She knew they'd understand what she was indicating.
Phanstomstep looked smug. He grinned as he said the single word. "Mossflight."
Twistedfoot's head jerked up. Another cat with siblings? Did she really have to wreck another family? "I… I…"
"It'll be simple," Greenstar said. His voice was deep and booming in its bass tone. "She's not physically advantaged like her brother."
"But that's the problem," Twistedfoot whispered. "She has a brother."
Longwhisker snorted. "You're upset about making Shadefire sad? Oh, pity," he added sarcastically. "Get over it, runt."
Twistedfoot hissed at his comment. "Say one more word and your perfect little tabby pelt will be in pieces."
Phantomstep cleared his throat. "Two sunrises. You'll kill him at night using the old route."
"It just seems so soon!" Twistedfoot argued.
"Quit your whining. You swore to do as we say." It was Greenstar again.
Twistedfoot's tail drooped. There was a long silence before she gave in. "Two sunrises, then."
"It's a date," Vinetail sneered.
Phantomstep gave a wicked grin before falling in a pile of shadows. The others did the same, black dust clouding where they disappeared. Soon, the darkness evaporated into nothing. The grass was as it had been, not flattened or bent. There were no paw prints in the dust, no signs that there had been any life on that barren riverbank.
It was as though the group of ghosts had never been there.
