Sometimes matchmaking doesn't go half as well as you thought it might, but then again, Hiroto is half convinced that his best friend doesn't have a romantic bone in his body, even as Hiroto walks Nana back to her house. The rain just won't let up today of all days, and he's shivering in his coat next to her, wondering why Subaru couldn't simply blink and go wow, my best female friend would be a lovely girl to date.
"It's okay. You don't have to walk me back." Nana's hand tightens in his, and for a moment, it's as if there was a sucker punch straight for his stomach, a light airy feeling reminds where he imagines he's been hit.
"I know. I don't know why Subaru didn't come." Hiroto pouts, despite himself, despite the fact that a pretty girl's hand is in his own, despite the fact that he feels happy to be next to her, happy to walk hand in hand with her, happy for today despite the rain and his friend's missed opportunities.
"It's okay." Nana smiles, and it looks almost like the sun came out across her lips, and Hiroto realizes amid his attempts at meddling in his best friend's love life that he's beginning to fall for her instead, "He was probably busy." She shrugs, and for all the ways in which pink seems to keep to her, she is cute.
"Too busy to hang out with a cute girl?" And Hiroto sometimes wonders where his brain departs to, because his lips like to move without consulting it a lot of the time.
Nana smiles, a small blush peeking out across her cheeks, and she looks down for a second, "It's okay." She repeats, and Hiroto suspects that for some reason, Nana doesn't realize how cute she actually is.
"He should be enjoying every second spent with you." Hiroto says instead of the many compliments that immediately come to mind, and Nana laughs. It's a delightful, sunny sound, and Hiroto thanks God for a moment that he was able to hear such a pretty sound. It's such a startling kind of moment for him, especially as he tries desperately not to fall for her.
"Thank you." She's still blushing, even as she lets go of his hand and goes up to her apartment, waving goodbye, and Hiroto's wondering whether she's thanking him for his sort of compliment or whether she's thanking him for walking her home or for spending time with her today, when Subaru decided not to come.
Sometimes Hiroto wonders if his friend is on to him, yet when he walks home, he wonders briefly whether his friend with his smarts and writing prowess suspected Hiroto to fall for Nana, even before Hiroto could see it himself.
