Final Fantasy XII: Horizon Line

Summer's in Jahara weren't nearly as hot as the one's in Rabanastre, but they were twice as humid. A dusky blonde haired fisherman sat by the river that ran next to the village with a homemade fishing pole in hand and was currently pondering which area's summer swelter was worse. The current thought was interrupted abruptly by a sudden curve in his fishing pole. After the initial surprise, the man reared back on the rod. A strong tug against him at the opposite end of the line inspired his elation. "Gotcha!" He quickly began to reel in the line, taking no time at all to land the green speckled Bass he'd hooked. Before he was able to celebrate, a gruff but strangely calming voice beckoned from somewhere behind him. "Bountiful haul you have there, Vaan."

The blond haired man lifted up the fish buy its lower lip. "Hey, back already Supinelu? I caught dinner."

The man called Supinelu was a Garif, one of the large, fur covered, mask wearing, and almost beast like humanoid's that called Ivalice home. His brown furred arms were gently crossed across his brawny chest as he responded. "You've learned to fish well. Ironic as a skill for a sky pirate."

Vaan stood up, his height had grown around five inches since the days past when he visited here. Nearly touching six feet in height made him nearly tall enough to look the Garif in the eyes directly. Vaan gazed at Supinelu's mask as he proceeded to tie the fish he'd caught onto a small piece of rope that had been crudely transformed into a homemade fish stringer. He tossed the fish out into the water and tied the rope to a small stick he'd stabbed in the ground. The fair skinned man then answered the Garif War Chief. "Well, as my friend Balthier says. "What is a man if not well rounded?" It took me quite a while to figure out what that meant. I thought he was just talking about skills. Not experience too."

Vaan chuckled to himself as he rambled. He quickly noticed that he got no response. This warranted an instinctual question. "What's wrong Supinelu? Why ARE you back early?"

Supinelu spoke from behind his decorated mask. "One of our brothers was on a hunt deep in the recesses of Golmore Jungle and has disappeared. It was Danalu."

This sank in legitimate shock, after moving to Jahara seven months ago, Vaan had Gone hunting with the Garif called Danalu many times. "Not Danalu! It would have to be one bad monster to get ahold of him."

Supinelu nodded. "Indeed, I Intend to lead a search party tonight. We will camp outside of Golmore then make an attempt to find him in the morning."

Vaan started packing up his gear. "Let's get going now then."

Supinelu spoke quietly. "Though your assistance will be welcomed, you are not obligated."

Vaan laughed. "Are you kidding? Y'all are my brothers."

Vaan plucked his Bass from the water and the two of them made their way up from the river bottom and into the small Garif Village. To Vaan's eyes, it hadn't changed since he first arrived here in the past. Perhaps another hut was built, but that was about it.

As per usual, the dire situation didn't break the calm focus of Supinelu, a common Garif trait. Vaan had been trying to learn this level of patience in the face of adversity after first witnessing Supinelu's leadership skills. After he admired Supinelu, the Garif's silence gave Vaan a chance to investigate the sky. "Looks like rain may be coming, we should set out soon to avoid unnecessary run ins with elementals."

Supinelu nodded. "You are seemingly one with the plains now Vaan."

The compliment earned a nod from the Hume.

As they crested a small hill, several red and tan huts appeared. Each held up by various animal hides and Wood, and all bearing a few visible Garif loafing. One certain Garif smoked deep from what Vaan had just assumed was a tobacco pipe upon first meeting the man. Though he did always seem a bit gigglier than the other Garif, so Vaan had grown suspicious of the herb he smoked. This man, Reynald, stopped them and told them that a party of Garif hunters awaited them at the village gate. Reynald then handed Vaan a garb that seemed like a green suit of leaves. "Use this our Hume friend, it will help conceal your presence from evil in the forest."

Vaan quickly dawned the item, immediately feeling lighter, he spoke. "Thanks!"

Vaan passed his fish over to the Garif lay about. "Hey Reynald, would you mind cleaning this for me since we're heading out?"

Reynald spoke. "Consider it done."

They resumed their walk and stopped off at a hut that Vaan recognized as Supinelu's personal house. The hut consisted of a bed and a weapon rack. Bland, but all a Garif warrior need to feel satisfied. The Large Garif grabbed a katana after tying on a set of Gauntlets. He bade Vaan choose a weapon. Vaan Pulled a small escutcheon from the rack and asked of Supinelu. "Would it be okay if I borrowed your Flame Sword?"

The Garif chief nodded. "The Flametongue, excellent choice for battles in the forest, feel free to use it as you see fit."

Vaan nodded, sheathed the sword, and then tethered it to his hip. "I'm ready."

The two of them quickly headed to the Village gate and were greeted by Sugumu, another Garif that Vaan had met four years ago, he'd given Vaan's old party his first Mark in Jahara, an Enkalados. The memory made Vaan smile a moment before he refocused.

Three other young Garif warriors waited with Sugumu, they all made a small grunt as a hello. Vaan had nearly yelled a loud cheer to rally the troops into saving Danalu. Yet, He had grown to understand that a simple nod meant everyone here was one in their resolve, so he delivered one quietly. The posse mounted Chocobo's and headed out for Golmore Jungle without any more words exchanged. Vaan's prediction from earlier came to fruition. The Chocobo ride was littered with pelting rain. For the first time, Vaan was truly jealous of the Masks that the Garif wore. "Too bad this fancy armor didn't come with a Hat."

Vaan nearly fell off of his Chocobo in shock when the typically Stoic Garif all released a minute chuckle at his joke.

Just before Nightfall the group pulled up into a clearing just outside of the depths of Golmore. As Vaan started at setting up a tent, he recognized the spot, he'd given an Alexandrian Soldier a potion here years ago. Which triggered a memory of his old friends. "I wonder how Larsa and Penelo are doing right now."

Supinelu heard the comment. "Ah, your Hume Companions?"

Vaan nodded. "Yeah, I saw Penelo recently, but I haven't seen Larsa in a few years…Archades is a long way away and he's emperor now. I went there once but he wasn't even in town."

Sugumu approached Vaan. "Perhaps once you leave here, you should visit them. It's always good to look out for your family."

Vaan nodded. "Maybe you're right. Perhaps it's getting close to time for me to go, be a lot easier if I had an airship…maybe after we find Danalu, we can go take down that Mark I first came here for, it has a large payoff, would be helpful for travel expenses."

Both Sugumu and Supinelu Nodded, Supinelu spoke. "I believe we're ready now. It's about time we take it down."

Vaan nodded as he took a seat next to the small campfire that the Garif had just lit. "You said we have to ask for assistance from the Viera to even reach where this monster lives, correct?"

Supinelu spoke over the crackling fire. "Indeed, we will have to obtain Lente's Tear if we wish to pass into the Feywood."

A large pot was placed on the fire and a stew was started by Supinelu. Vaan helped them cut vegetables with a small knife he pulled from his pocket. Sugumu began to speak during this action. "Back to current business, Danalu was on the far south side of the forest hunting a simple Hell Hound that we were asked to eliminate by the Viera. We will start by asking the Viera of Eruyt Village where he was sent within the forest."

All the Garif and Vaan nodded. The night carried on calmer than Vaan was used to in this sort of situation. The normal anxiety when a friend was in trouble didn't eat him as much. The Garif really settled him down. The small storm that moistened the plains had finally passed so the hume stared at the stars until he fell asleep. Vaan didn't know of it, but Supinelu carried him into the Hume's small tent and all the Garif went to sleep just after Vaan.

Far across Ivalice to the North towered the metropolis Archades. While Vaan slept in the dark open plains, the lights of the large City kept its residents quite active. The town had saw an upsurge of just about every facet in the last few years. The economic boom drew many people to the City, so it was more vibrant than ever. However, the last month had been extremely exuberant. Not only was their beloved emperor's birthday in three weeks, but the recently established arts college was putting on its first Fall Festival. Added to this, the world famous traveling arts guild, called Dirty Fireworks, was coming to participate.

People were flocking to the town for the regalia. Two such people had just arrived. After searching the city, they found a local Tavern that hadn't been filled with Tourists yet. It's slow pace was just what they were looking for. Still, People eyed the two of them as they entered, one was a man and the man was quite dashing, garnering attention from the quietly eager crowd. The second was a tall, beautiful, and light skinned Viera woman. She pulled the eyes of many male patrons and a few women as well. The two ended up taking a table on a second floor balcony, secluded seats meant ease of private conversation. A young male waiter took their order and descended the stairs when a loud conversation could be heard by everyone in the bar. Its delivery was through a few happily drunken mouths.

"I swear, Lord Larsa has made this place better than it ever could have been without him! I can't believe he's turning 17 already!"

Another patron shouted back, "I can't believe he's ONLY 17!"

Upstairs, the handsome man spoke to his partner. "How Lovely Fran, seems this tavern of supposed quiet solitude is actually a sty."

The Viera spoke back, a tone just above flat. "Why so irritated Balthier?"

The dark haired man returned. "I believe I have a headache."

Fran spoke back. "Still, we did come to celebrate a birthday, perhaps you should be more cheerful."

Balthier laughed. "Fair enough, semantics of position at least provide a good reason to drink."

The Viera smiled. "It's not as if we came here because of Larsa's title, he is our friend, no?"

The Sky pirate smiled back. "True enough, at least these shindigs provide ample food. Besides, isn't our fair Penelo supposed to be here tonight?"

Fran nodded. "That's what her message said…it's strange, if Penelo is here, I wonder where Vaan could be."

Balthier leaned in and bit a roll that sat on the table. He finished it and swallowed before returning. "Indeed, he must have stolen away on a whim. Probably to his partner's Chagrin. Would be a shame if he missed this though. First time the beloved desert flower of Dalmasca will be seen at this loose of an event in the last five years. Opportunities to rub elbows with royalty can be quite fleeting."

He paused a moment then continued. "Speaking of Penelo, did you get that message sent when we landed?"

Fran nodded. "I sent one to her and another to Basch…they should be here any minute."

A heaping plate of various finger foods was placed on their table. Both Balthier and Fran began to eat slowly when the men at the table below began talking loud and cheerfully again.

"Lord Larsa's first three years were shaky after he took office, but he's really come into his own these last 2 years!"

His cohort followed up. "He's old enough to take a wife now! Do you think he'll marry young or remain a bachelor!?"

"All I know is that she'll be quite a woman whenever he picks one!"

At that moment the bell on the tavern door rang as it was opened. A young blond girl burst through excitedly. She was fair skinned, her hair was pulled into multiple small braided ponytails, she wore blue dancer's parachute pants and a skin tight black laced sleeveless blouse that showed plentiful skin, had several bobbled anklets, and sandals that tapped the floor with impatient vigor. Her pretty appearance stunned the drunk men who'd been raving over Larsa into stoic silence. When the girl approached them, they both sat up straight as an arrow. She asked, bubbling with joy. "Excuse me, have you two seen a tall handsome guy and a pretty Viera come in here?"

One of the men simply pointed upstairs. The girl followed the hand signal and spotted Balthier, who was offering a small wave and a smile from his chair. Fran also nodded at the girl. The sight of them ignited the spark, the young girl ran up the stairs with haste, her various jewels clanked happily as she moved. As she crested the top of the stairs, Balthier and Fran Stood from their seats. Balthier looked at the girl and bowed. "Well hello, Miss Penelo."

The gentleman offered out a hand in the same manner one would to offer someone assistance in standing up. Penelo rushed over and squeezed his hand as she spoke. "I can't believe you guys are here! It's been like a year or almost two hasn't it?!"

The sky pirate nodded. "Indeed, I'm glad fortunes allowed us to meet."

Penelo gently threw his hand away and latched onto the man with a hug, something he didn't hate but also wasn't too accustomed to. He glanced at Fran. "Seems I'm still a hit with the young ladies Fran."

Fran nodded. "It would appear so."

When the Viera spoke, it drew Penelo's attention to her. She let go of Balthier and hugged Fran. The towering Viera woman patted her on the head once before Penelo let go of the hug. Fran traded a hug for conversation. "We were surprised to hear you and Vaan had separated."

Balthier cut in. "We were even more surprised that it was due to you joining an arts guild, Congratulations on the work. Seems you've made a name enough to perform here in Archades, not an easy task among aristocracy."

Penelo nodded. "Thanks so much! You're coming to watch me dance, Right?"

Balthier nodded. "What sort of leading man would I be if I didn't stop to watch a flower in bloom?"

Penelo blushed lightly at the comment. "Speaking of flowers, you best bring me some after the show mister."

Balthier laughed. "Of Course, a lady deserves gifts for her efforts on the stage."

Penelo smiled when Fran cut in. "On the topic of Gifts, the one you arranged for Penelo is here."

Balthier nodded. "Ah, excellent."

At this point, the bar had resumed its normal fanfare. So Penelo didn't hear the door downstairs open. But curiosity of what this gift could be when Balthier walked back to his seat and said, "Look downstairs," lead to Penelo glancing down at the person who'd just walked in.

A handsome middle aged man stood just inside the door observing his surroundings. His strong countenance was evident as he stood there. He wore basic brown pants and a red V-Neck shirt, seemingly basic items. Penelo lit up when she spotted him, his clothes may have seemed plain, but she recognized his well-trimmed beard and the large scar across his face as that of a familiar man who was the opposite of basic. She grabbed the railing upstairs like she was prepping to jump down as she yelled. "Basch!"

The man wasn't used to hearing that name in Archades, so it actually surprised him more than the shout. He glanced up and saw Penelo standing there, his own excitement peaked. "Is that Penelo!?"

The knight took a few steps to head toward her but stopped when Penelo came running down the stairs at full speed. Basch spoke as she approached. "Balthier didn't mention you would be-"

He was interrupted by Penelo jumping on him from her full sprint and wrapping him into a full body hug like a monkey holding onto a tree. Her momentum knocked him backwards, forcing him to shift his legs to catch both of their weight. He laughed as he wrapped his arms around her to both finish the hug and hold her up. She buried her head in his neck. "I can't believe you're here! This is amazing! I'm glad you're doing okay!"

Basch spoke back. "Same here, you're doing well?"

She released him from the hug and motioned to stand in front of him as he spoke, descending him like a kid in a tree. "Did you come to town with Balthier and Fran?"

She shook her head. "Nope, I'm here to perform with my guild."

Basch asked questioningly. "Guild?"

She nodded. "Yeah, Dirty Fireworks, the arts guild."

Basch lit up. "Oh! That's amazing, the fate's will it."

The tavern door behind him opened as a young man who was taller than Basch came through. Everyone in the tavern grew suddenly silent. Though the newcomer didn't seem to pay the crowd any mind, Basch did, quickly reading the mood and noticing no malcontent amongst patrons, he relaxed. As Basch did so, the young man walked up to the knight. "Apologies for being tardy Basch, the meeting ran overtime."

Penelo sized up the guy. Tall, dark wavy hair down past his shoulders, fancy Archadian garb, a rapier on his hip, a devilishly boyish but handsome face, and a soft voice. She decided she would call the guy a total ten. She listened as Basch turned and responded to the man. "No problem sir, I just arrived as well."

The man walked to stand next to Basch. "That's good, I was afraid I'd gotten out too late to make it here in time. So where is Balthier?"

The man now turned his focus off of Basch and immediately caught sight of the pretty dancer standing in front of him. His jaw practically dropped. Then he composed himself physically, but not in his tone, it belied his calm appearance. "Penelo?"

The handsome guy knew her name, but she didn't know his. She spoke to Basch. "Who is this guy Basch?"

The tall man simply smiled as Basch asked. "Do you not recognize him?"

The man laughed next to Basch. "To be fair, I have grown quite a lot."

Penelo looked at him closer, then it clicked. "Larsa!?"

The rest of the Tavern got their confirmation that it was their famous leader when she shouted it. So they joined in the drama unfolding before them. The whole crowd started murmuring excitedly. Still, Larsa was quite used to this level of fame by now, He simply spoke back smoothly. "I'm glad you remember me. I hope you've been well. It's been nearly four years since we've seen each other last. It's quite bizarre that we would meet randomly in a bar, sounds like a work of fiction's favorite cliché. Regardless, a chance for thanks, I do appreciate all the letters you sent me."

She laughed with a blush. "Yeah! Sorry they stopped, I got this job with the guild and I've been traveling so much that there's been no time to write."

Larsa leaned in, nearly a tower standing over her. "Talking in person is preferred anyway…I must say, you sure do look far more fetching now than the last time I saw you, time has blessed you it seems."

Penelo thought to herself while fighting off a blush. "What the heck, when did he get so suave, it's like talking to a friggin Romeo."

She laughed nervously, flustered, she spoke. "Seems uh, you grew a lot as well."

As she contemplated why it was difficult to say he looked handsome now in return of his compliment, she was saved by Balthier calling down from the balcony. "Going to chew ears down there all day?"

Basch called up. "Ah, Balthier, we'll head up now."

The three of them headed upstairs. Basch pulled out a chair for Penelo, which she sat in and jokingly added. "Thank you good sir."

Basch nodded seriously, Penelo wasn't sure if he was following up the joke or being his normal level of chivalrous. "You're welcome my lady."

Basch took a seat, then Larsa sat next to him in another small chair. Basch called over. "Fran, Balthier, It's grand to see you both."

Fran simply nodded as Balthier returned. "And you as well. The judge life seems to suit you nowadays Basch, and our emperor seems to have grown several more inches since we last met."

Basch laughed. "Well, a knight I am, so I knight I shall be. Larsa is more than worthy of my finest work."

Larsa interjected. "You're like to make me turn red in the ear Basch. I believe Basch is the one whom deserves the credit. He's changed what a judge should be through zealous and honorable work."

Basch nodded. "Thank you my Lord."

Larsa laughed. "You can drop the formalities here Basch. You aren't even in your armor, take it easy."

Basch nodded again when Balthier spoke. "What a benevolent leader you've become, no wonder everyone in this city seems so jovial."

Larsa laughed. "I credit it to my time with you all."

Across the table Penelo leaned in and quietly asked Basch. "When did Larsa get so tall? He's as big as his brother was."

Basch whispered back. "Not sure, you don't notice that sort of thing when you spend every day at someone's side."

Penelo nodded as she was still stuck trying not to seem too shocked while staring at Larsa. Basch quickly asked of the blond. "So, where is Vaan?"

The mention of the young sky pirate made Penelo snap back to reality when Balthier cut in. "Vaan! I was just going to ask the same thing. Where is our reckless young vagrant?"

Larsa also looked to Penelo. "Is he in the city as well? I would love to have you all stay at my estate for the night."

Penelo laughed nervously when everyone at the table gazed at her. "Well, Honestly, I'm not sure where he is."

All the guys at the table gave each other a curious glance. Vaan and Penelo had seemed inseparable at every moment. No one quite knew the nature or direction of their relationship, but regardless of platonic or romance, no one imagined they would separate for very long. Fran had been silent up to this point, but she broke it. "Did you two have a fight?"

Penelo puffed up a bit. "Yeah, I guess you would call it that."

They all listened intently, so Penelo took the hint and continued. "Well, I got this job seven months ago. We had just come home to Rabanastre from a pretty long trip…on the road for two months. We did find a ton of valuable treasure and took down a few marks for Montblanc. I was wiped out. I wanted to stay in Rabanastre a while. We actually finally had enough money to buy a house for the orphans. One we could stay in too."

Basch spoke up. "I'm betting Vaan wasn't too keen on staying put."

Penelo laughed. "Oh he was ALL FOR buying a house for the orphans, which is great, and we did that. Right outside of town. However, he already wanted to head out to go after some mark that Montblanc mentioned, one that had been open for seven years. It was crazy strong. It had killed several hunters. I swear, I don't know if there's anyone who can keep up with Vaan's level of drive."

The table, save Penelo, shared a chuckle, it was quite typical of Vaan. Larsa ended his chuckle with a question. "Has Vaan gotten strong enough to take on something like that by his lonesome?"

Penelo threw her hands up. "Honestly, I'm not sure. He's definitely far stronger than the last time you saw him, but we don't know how strong the monster is. I still don't even know WHAT the monster is. The only info Montblanc could give us is that it was last seen in the Feywood. Supposedly it was suspected of creating The Hell hounds in Golmore Jungle."

They all listened in, no one in present company would interrupt her out of turn. "Anyway, we had this argument about how he should settle down before he got himself killed. At least take a few months off in-between hunts. Same as always, I've never really had control over him. I mean, I don't care if he wants to save up for another airship, but he doesn't always have to put himself in danger to do so, right? I usually go with him, I love the travel, and I love to fight. It's just nice to slow down sometimes ya know? I really wanted to work on my dancing. Well I was telling him about that when suddenly he says he's been thinking about something."

She delivered it as a quote, her impersonation of Vaan was humorous as she continued. "I want to learn to become more self-sufficient, I've only ever lived in the City."

Balthier cut in. "That's a bit unexpected, perhaps our Vaan is growing up."

Penelo watched as Basch nodded. "Indeed, that means he's self-introspecting and growing."

Penelo laughed incredulously. "Boys are nuts. Why the fascination with starting a fire with your bare hands, things like that are great to know but it doesn't have to define you? Anyway, I told him I wouldn't stop him if he wanted to go live off of the land. He said he would wait a while and stay with me for a bit. However, the next day I tried out for the guild and I actually got in. When I told Vaan… I kind of already knew he wouldn't want to just travel with the guild and watch a bunch of Art performances. We actually went our separate ways that day. I have no clue where he went. The Guild typically stays in Rabanastre, but no one there has seen him. I told Kytes to let me know if he showed up. I just hope he hasn't gotten himself hurt or worse."

Basch cut in. "I don't really think you have to worry there. It takes a lot to take down someone like him."

Larsa cut in a bit sadly. "Too bad, I really would like to see him again. It's been so long. At least you're here Penelo, I hope you'll stay at the estate tonight?"

She nodded. "I just have to let the guild master know I'll be out tonight, but I would love to."

Larsa nodded. "Excellent, that offer stands for all of you as well."

Balthier nodded. "I'm due for a Royal bath."

Basch leaned in toward the Sky Pirate. "Balthier, I know you were planning to attend the fete for Larsa's Birthday celebrations, but that's in two weeks. Why have you brought us all together this early?"

Balthier spoke devilishly. "A grand reunion for old friends of course."

Larsa spoke. "Unlikely, A grand request of me perhaps?"

Balthier laughed. "Becoming quite the intuitive man aren't we?"

Larsa grinned. "Oh, I learn from the best…so what is it you need?"

Fran spoke. "We need a favor."

Larsa nodded. "Name it."

The sky pirate took over. "We need access to Tall fellow keep."

Tall Fellow Keep was an expanse of forest to the north of Archades where many of Larsa's family had trained through the last few generations. It was massive. House Solidor earned it as a gift years ago. It was nearly the same size as the Salikawood. Sixty years prior to current day it was lovely, until one day it was so beset with Mist that regular citizens were no longer allowed to travel through it without an Imperial army escort. The change was yet unexplained. No singular group had been allowed access to the forest in some time. Larsa was surprised at the request.

"Tall Fellow Keep? You know it's loaded with monsters and mist?"

Balthier nodded. "Yes, we actually got a lead on some treasure there. Supposedly if we can find a specific item, we may be able to clear the mist in the forest, and it should fetch a fat sum of Gold. My request for you, since your family owns the land, was we go in and locate this artifact, turn it over to the Imperial emperor as a keepsake, and make a bit of gold from the state. Not to mention, our young emperor has cleared another safe path for the common folk. Win, win, no?"

Larsa didn't even hesitate, he had unshakeable trust in the Sky Pirate. "I'm have no qualms. What sort of item could it be?"

Balthier returned. "I would rather tell you in a less…. spacious venue."

Larsa nodded. "Verily so, but I must tell you, it's a tradition that no one may enter Tall Fellow unless escorted by a member of House Solidor, there's even magicks on the gates that prevent access unless someone of my bloodline breaks the spell."

Fran spoke. "We are aware. That's why we wanted to ask for your assistance."

Balthier cut in again. "And of course, The Emperor must bring along his trusted knight."

Basch nodded, typically, he would suggest Larsa remain behind. However, he knew Larsa was necessary and wouldn't be dissuaded on this one anyway. "Of Course."

Fran looked at Penelo. "We would also appreciate your help Penelo. Someone talented in Healing Magicks would be most useful."

Penelo was STOKED. "When are we going? I have to go let the guild master know."

Balthier nodded. "If we leave tomorrow, we can be back before your performance this weekend."

Penelo hopped up. "Well I shall go tell him."

Larsa stood. "May I escort you there Penelo? I can show you to my estate afterwards."

Penelo smiled. "Sure."

Larsa offered a goodbye to the table. "I trust you remember to way to the Estate Balthier, I will see you later this eventide Basch."

Larsa offered his arm to escort Penelo, she wrapped hers in it and they headed down the stairs. The two drunk men from before watched them exit in awe.

After the door closed, one of the drunk men could be heard. "Does Lord Larsa have a girlfriend!?"

Balthier smirked as he stood and brushed his pants to straighten them. "Our young Larsa is quite bold these days."

Basch laughed. "I would not be disappointed if that was a development in the future."

Balthier pushed his chair in under the table. "A powerful development it would make indeed, but our young Vaan would not only be devoid of ship, he'd lose his first mate as well."

Fran spoke up again. "One must move fast to capture a rabbit."

Balthier whistled, then winked at Fran. "Then I must be the fastest."

The lights of Archades illuminated a small water fountain in quite a fetching way as Penelo and Larsa walked past it, her arm slung onto his. She couldn't get over how tall Larsa had grown, it was strange looking up to talk to him. Vaan had grown to be around Basch's height and build, and that was a shock, but Larsa was a giant. She was so distracted by it that she didn't notice the crowd of people who watched their lord on a never before seen midnight stroll with a maiden. She was actually looking up at him when he asked of her. "So, what sort of things do you do for your guild?"

She let go of his arm and walked a few steps in front of him, she spun on one foot. "I'm a dancer."

He tapped his head. "That's right! I have a vague memory of you mentioning you danced."

She laughed. "We were on such a mission back then. If we'd spent one night awake and not comatose, you may have gotten the chance to see me dance."

Larsa smiled. "I'm sure you're one with the air itself, of that I have no doubt. Perhaps a demonstration can be arranged here under the lights of the night?"

Penelo slapped him on the arm playfully then waved her finger towards his face comically. "No free shows, that's the first rule."

Larsa laughed louder than Penelo had ever heard him do before. "Then I shall reserve the best seats in the house this weekend."

Penelo smiled at his joy as she thought to herself. "He's so much more lighthearted like this, I wonder if he was always like this before Vayne went wild. He's quite cute this way, its way better."

She laughed. "I like this look on you, I'm glad to see you aren't carrying so much weight anymore."

He nodded. "I would say the type of weight just changed."

Penelo hopped up on the ledge of the fountain they walked next to. "That's right, talking to you like this… it's hard to remember that you're the emperor of Archades."

Larsa offered a hand and helped the girl balance and walk along the fountain edge. "I'll take that as a compliment, I remember when you used to fear the Empire."

Penelo replied. "Well the empire is still so big that it's imposing…but their leader is kinda cool."

Larsa might have blushed cheesily, but it was too dark to tell. Before he could respond, she hopped down from the fountain. "Oh, this is the place."

They now stood in front of what Larsa knew to be a local Hostel. There was a group of musicians out front of it playing some random folk ballad when they approached. Penelo jogged up to the group while Larsa slowly walked up behind her. Penelo called out to a man in the middle of the group who was dark skinned, roughly forty years old, wore a leather brown jacket, had a warm face, and played a guitar. "Michael!"

Then man called Michael didn't break his strumming as he replied. "Oh, hello Penelo, back already? How were those old friends of yours?"

Penelo replied happily. "They're doing wonderful! I actually wanted to introduce you to one of them."

At this point Larsa was standing next to her. "This is Larsa."

Michael and the musicians went slightly wide eyed, obviously they knew who he was. Michael stood up quickly. "Hello sir."

Larsa replied. "Good to see you again Sir Michael…please don't stop playing on my account, it sounded quite lovely."

The group nervously started up their tune again when Penelo asked through genuine surprise. "You two already know each other?"

Larsa nodded. "Indeed, we met this morning at the college, Michael here agreed to have your guild stay in town next week and provide the entertainment for my birthday fete. It was Basch's idea, he was keen on having a Rabanastran group play for us since the Lady Ashe will be in attendance."

Penelo just heard several things she didn't expect, she started with Michael. "We're playing the fete?"

The older man nodded. "Well Archades was the last stop on this tour, so it doesn't require any rescheduling on our part. It's also a wonderful opportunity for the guild. I had no reason to say no."

Penelo just nodded and paused before Michael offered his own question. "Say, uh, Penelo, how do you know Lord Larsa?"

Penelo wasn't sure how much information about what happened with Vayne and the Queen was openly discussable, she was pondering it when Larsa answered for her. "We go way back, Penelo and her friend Vaan assisted me many times when I was much Younger, they were the first real friends I ever attained."

Michael nodded. "Still not sure how you crossed paths with a noble, but the way I see it, we're all just people, I'm glad our Penelo was helpful back then."

Larsa nodded. "Indeed, that's actually why I'm here. Would it be possible for me to steal away Penelo for the next few days? Some other friends of ours have asked for our help on an errand."

Penelo cut in. "I would be staying at Larsa's estate. I would have to miss practice until the show."

Michael laughed. "If you don't know the set by now I'd have to fire you from the guild…Well I suppose that's fine, just as long as you keep Penelo safe sir."

Larsa bowed with a hand over his chest. "On my life. She will return unharmed."

Several of the female guild members swooned while several of the men shared an impressed nod at this action. Penelo scratched her head nervously. "Well, see you in a few days."

With that, Penelo grabbed Larsa by the arm and pulled him up from his bowing position and started dragging him off from the embarrassing moment. She quickly laughed. "I don't need that much help keeping myself safe."

Larsa stood up straight and joined her in her slow gait. "Do they not know you're trained for battle? Or is it just that he's the sort to worry over you."

Penelo laughed. "I suppose it's a little bit of both."

Larsa continued. "Well I made a promise on the name of my bloodline years ago to keep you safe, I've not forgotten."

Penelo punched his shoulder lightly. "Well can we start with protecting my stomach from hunger?"

He nodded. "I haven't sat to take dinner normally in several days…that settles it, you name it, and we shall partake. What would you care to eat?"

Penelo put a hand to her chin. "Hmm, are there any famous Arcadian delicacies I can try?"

Larsa nodded. "I think I know just the thing."

It was an uncommonly cold night for the time of year in Dalmasca. Fall did bring cooler weather to the desert, but the intensely freezing evenings didn't typically start until the dead of winter. The unexpected cold weather front had pushed most citizens home earlier than normal. The side effect of this being that the streets were dead quiet. Normally the fanfare could be heard all the way up from the balcony that hung atop Rabanastre palace. Tonight, a fair haired female lounging in a chair upon the balcony was glad for the silence. Nearly every night she'd be out in the open air to decompress from the day's activities. On this particular day, she was recovering from quite the headache, the chill felt good on her temples. So the cold air need only be accompanied by a blanket to be satisfying. Her peach skin had begun to turn red under the sting of the night air when a brown haired servant girl handed said blanket over. "Lady Ashe, A blanket."

Ashe leaned forward in her lounge chair and cocooned herself in the blanket. She spoke softly to her maid. "Thanks Emily, would you care to take a seat?"

The servant eagerly sat down next to her queen. "Thank you my lady."

Ashe let out a loud sigh. "THAT, was a long day."

The servant called Emily laughed. "The look on Lord Wilson's face was quite amusing."

Ashe scoffed. "I can't believe Lord Wilson would think I ought to marry him so easily."

Emily nodded. "He's 60, 36 years older than you. He would be dead before you had any chance to make a child."

Ashe stifled a laugh. "I would not marry a man I didn't love regardless, my father married for love… it's the Dalmascan way."

Just then, an elderly knight, roughly fifty years old walked out onto the balcony in a suit of armor and spoke. "Indeed majesty, in the long History of Dalmasca, political marriages have always paled next to romance."

The man handed a cup of tea to Ashe. "Here, Don't catch cold highness."

She nodded. "Thank you Bronwin..."

Ashe spoke up after a long sip. "Bronwin, I don't suppose you could send a general message to the Rozarrian Nobles that I have no desire to marry any of them or their sons?"

Bronwin laughed. "It would by my utmost pleasure, but unfortunately, the formality of a personal rejection comes with the territory. Wouldn't do to have the whole of Rozarria in an uproar because of a sensitive noble with a loose tongue who had false things to shout of our Queen."

That was one majorly unfortunate thing with this duty of hers, handling bullies with grace at all times. "To be honest Bronwin, I care not what they think."

Bronwin thought a moment. "Well majesty, if you end up deciding to decline participation in any of these formalities, I will make the announcement that you have no desire to be betrothed any time soon. The whole of Dalmasca shall support you."

Ashe nodded. "I'll think on it, the last thing I want to do is cause more tension in Rozarria. They are already dealing with enough internal strife. I suppose I can endure a few more of these meetings. Neo-Rozarrians would love to claim the current leadership caused a rift between Rozarria and Dalmasca by being too forward with their queen and scaring her away."

Bronwin nodded. "Indeed majesty, but do not worry, there are always ways to handle these things gracefully. They will get the message soon enough. Besides, I would not see you marry some man for position unless you desired so for love. Your father and Lord Rasler would not meet me well in the afterlife if I did so."

Ashe smiled to herself sadly then thought to herself. "As if someone could replace either my Father or Rasler."

Emily, the servant, spoke up. "Well, the only lord we're supposed to meet with now is Emilio Margrace. That isn't for another month, perhaps we should focus more on our trip to Archades and less on another suitor."

Ashe nodded. "I hear Emilio is a loose cannon, That should be fun…perhaps after I turn him down, we can make an official announcement that marriage is off the table for the foreseeable future."

She sighed. "You are correct however, I should change my focus, I am excited to see Larsa, but even more so to see Basch, what day do we leave?"

Bronwin nodded next to her. "I do miss him so, I hope Basch is well."

He paused a moment then answered the question. "In one week Majesty, we have already reserved the royal airship crew and a secured dock in Archades. Lord Larsa is supposed to escort us in person."

Balthier knew about the move Larsa had made, leaving behind the Solidor's old estate. Still, He never imagined the Young lord would move into his families' former home. The sky pirate supposed it made sense. His father Cid's study would certainly suit Larsa's love of knowledge. Strangely enough, sitting in his former living room didn't upset him at all. His father Cid stopped coming here years ago, but Balthier did have good memories of his mother in this place. He glanced around the room, much of the furniture had changed. The walls used to be barren, but they now were covered in tapestries. It was also considerably well-lit compared to the past. One thing that stayed the same, the large bay window that overlooked the city. Balthier stood at the glass, staring out at the lights of Archades pontificating the past in his brain. The melancholy smile on his face drew the attention of Fran as the Viera walked up to join him. She asked him upon standing next to him. "What troubles you?"

Balthier laughed. "I should have figured that you of all people would look straight through me."

Fran nodded. "I would be a poor partner if I didn't know you."

Balthier laughed then spoke with nostalgic happiness. "Well, standing here…my mother and I used to watch the town, poking fun at the passerby. My best youthful memories are here."

Fran asked. "Your mother, she was a good woman then?"

Balthier glanced at Fran, pulling his gaze away from the city. "The loveliest."

Fran smiled at his frankness. "Unfortunate I could not meet her."

Balthier. "Ah yes, no doubt my mother would have adored you."

Fran cocked her head inquisitively. "Is that so?"

The sky pirate nodded. "She always was the rebellious one, quite untamable and stronger than any of her peers...just knowing I befriended a Viera…Aristocracy be damned. Upon meeting you, she would probably demand I marry you just to fight the mold, her teasing wouldn't cease either. Hearing your past would only make her akin to you, she knew something of family strife. Yes…she would be quite fond of you."

Fran spoke slightly more cheerfully. "It would seem she influenced you greatly."

Balthier laughed wryly. "What can I say, she instilled me with superior taste in women and a keen sense of adventure."

The Viera continued. "Your mother, this is the most you've spoke of her, is it painful?"

Balthier thought a moment. "In a way…more nostalgic nowadays."

He glanced back outside. "How about you, I know of your sisters. What of your parents?"

As he finished that line, a door clinked behind them. Larsa and Penelo came through the archway, both quite happy. Each carried a box of foods and a broad smile. Their boisterous entrance, filled with random chatter, was a stark contrast to the mood of Balthier and Fran. Penelo noticed this and asked when she saw the two of them. "Oh, sorry guys, did we interrupt?"

Balthier laughed. "No my dear, especially not if that's our feast you carry under your arm."

Penelo laughed. "It is," she glanced at Fran, who seemed a bit off, not necessarily bad, just like she had something to say. Penelo asked. "Are you sure we shouldn't come back in a minute?"

Larsa joined in. "Indeed, we have to go grab refreshments anyway."

Fran spoke back. "Do not worry on my account."

Fran walked away from the window where Balthier stood. After taking a few steps, she turned around and spoke back to her partner. "Mjoll."

Balthier's face spoke confusion. "Mjoll?"

Larsa and Penelo gave each other a look, they could hear them but had no clue of what the context was. They just watched as Fran answered Balthier. "My mother's name."

Balthier was genuinely surprised when the Viera continued in her peculiar accent. "She held no hatred for Humes. Her curiosity overcame her fear. However, I don't know if she would have liked you. Sky pirates are quite suspicious."

Fran turned and walked up to Larsa. "Baths?"

Larsa nodded. "Second Floor."

Penelo and Larsa watched as Fran left, then both glanced back at Balthier. The sky pirate had a lustful look on his face as he began to laugh. "Seems our resident Viera is feeling coquettish this eventide."

Larsa seemed lost, but Penelo covered her mouth as she asked. "Wait, are you two like…an item now?"

Balthier threw his hands up dramatically to insinuate that he didn't know. "Your guess is good as mine."

Larsa picked up on all the insinuation. It wasn't that he was slow, he just didn't know Fran and Balthier's dynamic quite as well as Penelo. To be fair, it was quite a difficult dynamic to read in general. "I see, well I bid you good luck sir."

The Pirate nodded. "Oh to be sure, but Lady Luck is only an escort. It's up to the suitor to navigate a woman' fickleness."

Balthier walked up and placed a hand on Larsa's shoulder, now he was showboating with his leading man way of the charm. "A bit of Advice, when asking a lady about her past, never push. Information learned delicately is always sweeter."

Larsa laughed. "I'll keep that in mind."

Balthier continued. "Speaking of fair ladies, Penelo, pray tell, what's on tonight's menu?"

Penelo spoke up. "Archadian Shish kabobs."

Balthier whistled. "Now tell me, where did you learn of this food?"

The blond nodded toward Larsa. "Big guy took me."

At this point, Basch walked into the room, a pair of shorts on his legs and a towel strewn over his shoulders, his bare chest exposed beneath it. The knight called out. "Do I smell Bar B Q?"

He immediately saw Penelo, who was looking at Basch's chest. He shoddily pulled the towel to cover it. "Apologies Penelo, I didn't realize there was a lady present."

Penelo, who wasn't sure if Basch's muscles or scars were more impressive, responded in a teasing tone. "Oh, don't mind me muscles."

Basch laughed nervously. "I'll be right back."

Just two minutes later Basch returned, a black shirt clad over his chest. This time he asked of Larsa. "Shall we go to the dining room?"

Larsa shook his head side to side. "Let's just eat in here."

Basch nodded. "Very well sir."

They all took seats, Larsa and Penelo sat together on a red bodied and gold laced Loveseat. Basch sat at a small chair that hid in the corner of the room. Then Balthier put his feet up on a long red couch that matched the loveseat. Food and drink was passed around the room. The aroma of charred meats and veggies permeated the air. Penelo and Larsa both took a bite at the same time and smiled at each other when they tasted it. Penelo called out after swallowing. "Oh my gosh, this is way too good Larsa."

The black haired teen looked more like a normal person at this moment as he nodded aggressively. "I know! Basch showed me this place. It's far superior to that fancy food they serve me all the time."

Penelo took another bite. "It reminds me of the street food they have in Rabanastre."

Basch called out. "That's exactly what I thought, it reminds me of the Mithru Bazaar."

Balthier randomly cut in. "I used to eat this all the time. My mother showed me the restaurant down in the lower quarters. She never did have any issue with the folks my father and his peers saw as inferior. The food I would partake in was ample proof of her belief."

Penelo took another bite and leaned forward toward Balthier. "Did you grow up with your mom around here then?"

Balthier laughed. "Indeed I did, this very living room in fact."

Penelo looked puzzled, Larsa took notice and filled in the blanks. "When I first took up office. I had no desire to live in House Solidor's old estate. Too many poor memories there, I desired to separate myself from our dark past. Doctor Cid's passing led to this home becoming Balthier's, as the sole heir, this was natural. I actually bought it from him."

Penelo watched, intrigued when Balthier finished the explanation. "A straight trade, my estate in return for the airship called Galbana."

Penelo kind of hung her head in shame. "The one….that you gave to Vaan. Then got blown up."

Balthier laughed. "It at least took one glorious trip to the sky above Ivalice before its unfortunate end, a fitting end for a ship with her level of beauty."

Basch laughed aloud. "I'm not sure if Vaan is lucky for not dying in the explosion or unlucky for his crushed dream."

Penelo waved her hands dismissingly. "Oh I wouldn't worry about his dreams, he'd run across the globe on a whim, no ship needed, just preferred."

Basch smiled. "A man without direct purpose and a wondering soul will always be searching."

Larsa laughed. "Full of philosophy tonight as usual Basch?"

The knight nodded. "I'm just in high spirts sir."

The dark haired teen agreed. "As am I…So Balthier, I hope you don't mind all the decorating I did to the place."

The sky pirate answered. "Not at all, it's your home now after all. I'm too apt to roam to be concerned over what hangs on a set of walls. Besides, my father was responsible for the drab surroundings, this house could have always done for some color."

Larsa suddenly caught a light elbow to his ribs from the girl that sat next to him, he winced slightly then looked down at Penelo, who was pointing at the food on the arm of the couch. He joked. "My ribs have payed dearly for your unquenchable appetite."

She laughed as Larsa handed her another Shish Kabob.

Balthier took a small bite of his food. "Seeing you here Larsa, you look less of an emperor, more of a mortal man."

Larsa cocked his head. "You think so?"

The Sky Pirate waved his hand as he spoke. "Oh to be sure, eating common man's food, sitting languidly on a couch with a young maiden. Dressed for leisure. You seem the epitome of respite."

Larsa laughed. "Outside of leaving Archades, this place IS my only respite. I see no reason to front in present company regardless.

Penelo added. "Well I'm glad you know how to relax….unlike Basch over there, how straight can someone sit in a chair?"

All but Basch laughed, the knight instead just answered with a comical tone. "If the situation warranted, I could sit even straighter."

Penelo laughed boldly, the joke obviously landed. She stood and walked over to the man. "So Basch, I hear Ashe is coming here for Larsa's coming of age ceremony next week, are you excited?"

Basch nodded. "Quite, It's always a relief to see her Majesty is doing well. Will you be joining us?"

Penelo rubbed the back of her head. "I'd have to be a VIP to get into that."

Basch laughed. "I thought you were brighter than that. You would be an official guest of the Emperor; all you need do is ask."

She turned and looked to Larsa. "Is that true!?"

Larsa smiled with his eyes closed. "That should be obvious, you'll be performing there regardless, and afterwards you shall join us."

Penelo jumped up and shook her body excitedly. "Thanks! I can't believe I actually get to talk to Ashe, it's been so long!"

Larsa tilted his head. "You're both in Rabanastre and you haven't seen her?"

Penelo shook her head. "Nope, the most I've been able to do is wave at her from the crowd when she gives an address. I did get to see her up close once but she was in a rush."

Larsa seemed puzzled. "I know that the separation of Leader and their people in Dalmasca is wider than here, but I'm surprised she's never invited you to dine with her."

Penelo laughed "Well, I'm a commoner, besides, I would rather not bother her…she is extremely busy."

Larsa shook his head. "I would think Ashe would desire to separate class."

Basch spoke up in Ashe's defense. "It's not that simple sir. You have power delegated, therefore slightly thinner responsibility…and a close relationship to the people, even the ability to mingle with your citizens regularly. Ashe sits alone at the top, something that's both busy and heavily guarded."

Balthier took a chance to cut in. "Simply democracy vs theocracy. Both have advantages and disadvantages."

Larsa nodded. "Admittedly, any time I've been to Rabanastre, it's been on official business. I've never really seen the people around the queen or explored the streets like I can here. I always assumed she spent more time able to roam when not working."

Basch spoke quietly. "I've no doubt the Lady Ashe would take any opportunity to be closer to her people. She has a wandering spirit, but also, plentiful drive to be the best in her position. She believes she must uphold her family's name. It's a difficult balancing act…As far as interactions go, she only gets exposure to people working in the castle. She has years of poverty stricken economy at the low levels to undo and a lot of trust to earn back from the people before she can make any major societal changes. The majority support her, but not all. She's also the last of her bloodline, so security is tight, she cannot simply walk the streets as you can here."

Penelo nodded. "I still hear people in the streets angry with her about her death being a hoax, they think she abandoned them."

Balthier interjected. "Small thoughts from small minds, they could never understand the intricacies it took to reestablish her throne. That whole of that country owes a handful of people a debt, the lady Ashe sitting at the top of that list."

Larsa sighed. "I do not envy her position. I do respect her poise however. I'm glad we've worked out trade deals to help bolster the Dalmascan economy. Hopefully it pulled some pressure off her shoulders…Perhaps we can provide her a mental break from her duties while she is here."

Penelo fist pumped. "The party should be good for that! I shall dance my best then, I'll knock her socks off!"

Larsa nodded. "I'm sure she will love it. Basch, will you escort the Queen? I will double down security here so she may relax at this estate, if her guard turns her over to you, I'm sure they will be more apt to give her space. Perhaps Balthier and Fran can accompany you as well, three sets of familiar hands to free her mind?"

Balthier laughed. "Sure, I'll even wipe the fee as a gift for our lord's birthday."

Larsa laughed sarcastically. "How generous, what say you Basch?"

Basch nodded. "Of Course, I appreciate it sir."

Penelo leaned against a wall an announced to the room. "Stupid Vaan, the whole crew will be back together and he'll be off doing god knows what."

Larsa looked at his sad friend's face. "Well I'm sure he'll make an appearance again someday soon."

At this moment, Fran returned to the room. She wore what Larsa guessed was the Viera version of a nightgown, lots of sheer sashes covering a little more skin than their typical day clothes. Balthier welcomed her back, then she spoke. "Did you tell them of our hunt tomorrow."

Balthier sat up straight on the couch. "Ah, apologies dear Fran, I had gotten sidetracked."

He looked to the rest of the room. "So, I'll spare the bland details. Three weeks ago, we ran into an old historian. He was mad about something called a mist orb."

Penelo asked. "A mist orb, what's that?"

Balthier continued, "I had the same question. The gentleman explained that back in his day, there was a very rare, very special item. This orb could create or absorb mist. On a small scale, it could be used in battle to make a hasty smokescreen. On a large scale, if embedded in the earth, it could absorb the very life-force of the planet and create entire realms of mist."

Larsa spoke excitedly. "Like the large, sudden mist cloud that enshrouded Tall Fellow Keep?"

Balthier nodded. "Mmhmm, He claimed that an old friend had this mist orb…and that this friend had a family member slain at the hands of House Solidor. The friend couldn't fight but said he had a way to smother the Solidor's power and best kept secret."

Larsa looked puzzled. "Our secret? I honestly have never heard of it, definitely not anything related to Tall Fellow Keep."

Balthier simply smacked his lips lightly. "Is that so, well perhaps some ominous thing from your families past lie in wait there. Either way, I wish to attain this orb. This may all just be a rumor, but adventure beckons on the feet of rumor."

Larsa put a hand to his chin. "Knowing my family…I don't know if this secret IS good or bad."

Basch walked over behind the loveseat and placed a hand on Larsa's shoulder. "Only one way to find out."

The young emperor nodded as Penelo walked up to him and bent at the waist with her hands on her hips to get eye level with him in his sitting position. "And remember, you aren't responsible for your families past, you are only in charge of your own life."

Larsa nodded an affirmative. "You're right…still, I wonder what it could be?"

Have a lovely day. May I suggest you listen to a song Called Camouflage by The Front Bottoms?
