The squad room was abuzz. The team along with Diane Yates from the FBI were trying to track down a sniper who had reappeared again after 27 years. Lilly and Diane were sitting at a table going over the crime scene from the latest shooting. Something in the background of the photo had caught Diane's eye.
"Mom!" a blonde-haired boy ran into the squad room with his grandfather, Paul Cooper following close behind. His jacket was unzipped, coming off of his right shoulder and his left shoe was untied. The boy's hair was damp and sticking to his forehead like it always did when he played outside for a long time.
Lilly couldn't help but smile at her son, "Diane, you'll have to excuse me for a minute. I'm mom" Lilly Rush told the older woman sitting across from her.
"Deacon, over here" She waved the boy over to her desk.
Diane stayed seated and continued looking over the photos from the crime scene, but she kept stealing glances at Lilly and her son.
"Mom," He stood by her catching his breath.
"Hey, did you and grandpa have fun?" She ran her hand through his damp hair.
"Yeah," he said hurriedly
He was jumping from one foot to the other, "Mom, listen, I have a really important question ta ask you."
Lilly chuckled at her son, "Yeah, what's that?"
"Okay, I know it's a school night, but this is a really important game for the Phillies." Lilly nodded. She already had an idea of what his question would be. "How about instead of dad going out and watching the game with Uncle Will and Uncle Nick, can they come to our house and watch?"
She tried to contain her laughter at the serious expression on her son's face. It was a spitting image of his dad. "Well, I don't know honey. You'd have to ask your dad and your uncles."
She looked over to John's office to make sure he wasn't having any important conversations. "Why don't you go gather the troops and ask them."
"Okay!" He turned around and quickly made his way toward John's office.
Lilly returned to her seat by Diane, "Cute kid." Diane said.
"Thanks, we think so" Lilly proudly smiled.
"What floor does his dad work on?" Diane asked
"This one." Lilly said nonchalantly, "John is his dad" She pointed to the glassed-in office where they could see Deacon giving his pitch to his dad and uncles.
Diane raised her eyebrows in surprise, "And they let you two continue to work together?" Diane asked curtly.
"Well, we keep our personal lives out of the office." Lilly shrugged "Here, he's boss, and at home, he's John or dad."
Lilly smiled, "Ya know, sometimes ya just can't help it when your boy is excited about a chance to spend the evening with his dad and his uncles."
"YES!" The two women looked toward John's office to see Deacon jumping up, with the biggest smile in the world on his face and hugging his dad.
"Well, it looks like the game will be on at my house tonight." Lilly said to Diane, "You're welcome to join is if you don't mind the guys yelling and pizza for dinner"
