A/N Hey guys, I've been wanting to do a crossover story ever since I watched Kekkaishi and played the Devil May Cry games so in this story, the OC Christopher Davidson, is from modern times but he winds up 400 years ago in ancient Japan through unknown reasons that will be explained later as he encounters Madarao and Kouya.
That's right, he becomes friends with the two canine Ayakashi but it will take a little longer for Chris to gain Kouya's trust because of his disdain for humans so Kouya will mostly give Chris the cold shoulder before he does warm up to him until all three meet Tokimori Hazuma and Hakubi.
Well, I won't spoil it, but something will happen to Chris in the next chapter that none of you will expect so be ready for it and without further ado, enjoy.
I let out a quiet groan, feeling disoriented as I noticed that what I was lying on was a little hard for some reason so I slowly opened my eyes, only to immediately shut them from the sun's rays hitting me in the face as I grimaced.
'Damn, just what the hell did I do last night?' I thought as I slowly sat up and rubbed my head before opening my eyes again now that I wasn't facing the sun.
I was taken aback by the sight of trees all around me, seeing that I was outside and in the middle of some kind of forest but I had no earthly idea as to how I got here or why I was sleeping on the ground since there was nothing but a blank between the time I was coming home from school to now.
"Wh- how the fuck did I even get here?" I muttered in bewilderment while looking around with wide eyes.
I was completely puzzled, wondering if I got drunk or something and just wandered into the forest before passing out on the ground but I knew that I couldn't stay here all day so I brushed off any dirt that was on me and started moving through the forest.
I noticed that there weren't any sounds of cars or other signs of modern civilization but I also noticed that the air seemed a little too clean, as if there were no signs of pollution at all and I had a feeling that something wasn't right as I kept walking past different trees.
Before I knew it, a couple of hours had gone by with the sun starting to set and I was hungry and thirsty but I had to figure out where I was first when I made it to some kind of clearing that had a lake with a rock wall and a waterfall, feeling a little happy that I had found a fresh source of water while I hurried over to the waterfall.
I cupped my hands and held them under the waterfall, drinking from the fresh water and letting out a sigh of relief as my thirst was quenched but now I needed to find food and I had no idea where to start looking, so I tried to recall what I learned in the cub scouts and remembered that I needed to build a fire to keep warm and scare away any predators.
The second thing on my list was to hunt for food so I needed to make a bow or a spear to help me take down prey, then I had to find something sharp to skin the meat and cook it so I had a lot of work to do if I wanted to survive until I make it back to civilization, just as I noticed that it was getting dark so I didn't have much time before the forest's predators come out to hunt for prey.
With that in mind, I started looking around for materials to build a fire as the sun disappeared over the horizon and the moon rose as it got dark, just as I thankfully managed to find sticks and stones while searching and put together a campfire.
Once that was done, I started striking two stones together to create some sparks to start a fire and it took a lot of swearing and fumbling, but I managed to start up a fire and blew on the tiny flames to make them bigger until I had a fire going.
I spent some time lost in thought about my situation while feeling a little uneasy since something was wrong and I didn't know why I had that feeling, but it was almost like I was being watched or something and that sensation didn't appear until I started setting up a campfire.
'Okay, either I'm being very paranoid all of a sudden or some predator is watching me,' I thought as I instinctively held my arms and felt more than uncomfortable from the feeling of being watched.
It was at that moment that I heard twigs snapping nearby and quickly looked, seeing a dark shape dart out of my line of sight and I froze up from seeing it as I started getting really nervous and hoped that the fire would scare away whatever is out there until growling happened close by.
I started feeling scared since it was getting closer and whatever was making that noise didn't appear to be afraid of the fire, making me slowly stand up and I doubt I would be able to run since whatever it was could catch me.
When the growling got close enough, I could see two dark shapes approaching my campsite and they appeared to be canine in nature but something about them felt off just as they stepped into the light, then I got a good look at them thanks to the fire and my eyes widened while they started circling my campsite.
The predators definitely looked canine in nature with one having black fur with an x-shaped scar on its chest and the other being pure white but they looked completely wrong as I saw small clouds, dark purple and pink, hovering next to them as the black canine had red spiraled eyes and the white one had green spiraled eyes.
I started breathing heavily as the black canine was entirely focused on me while it was bristling and kept growling at me with what appeared to be pure hate in its eyes as the white one looked more curious but slightly wary while I started looking around for something to defend myself since the black canine was more aggressive than the white one.
"Human," the black canine snarled in a gravelly deep male voice, making my eyes bug out at hearing the canine talk like a regular human and I instinctively stumbled back while forgetting to not make any sudden moves.
"W-What the hell?!" I exclaimed incredulously when I tripped over a log and fell back until I hit my head against the ground.
I quickly grabbed my head and started rolling around on the ground while letting out shouts of pain, forgetting about the canines momentarily as my head hurt like hell from the impact, and I stopped rolling near the campfire.
"Son of a...goddammit, that hurt!" I groaned loudly through clenched teeth and heard someone laughing as I sat up and kept clutching my head while I went to look at the two canines.
The white canine was definitely laughing his head off at my misfortune while the black one wasn't growling anymore, staring at me with a sweatdrop as I was checking my head to see if I was bleeding but I didn't see any blood when I pulled my hand away so I seemed to be fine but the problem was that I was dealing with two unnatural canines, one of which that could talk and the other one was laughing so it was clear that both of them had some form of human intelligence if one of them was capable of speech and the other could be as well.
"Oh dear, I haven't laughed that hard in ages," the white canine admitted with a smooth male voice, confirming that he was capable of human speech as well while I stood up and was struggling to wrap my head around the fact that these two beings could talk and appeared to be something supernatural if their eyes and the hovering clouds beside their bodies told me anything.
'Oh god, I'm not dreaming...am I?' I thought as I realized that this was real since it hurt too much when I hit my head so I started wondering how this was possible as the black canine scowled.
"Hey, you better not be ignoring us, human!" the black canine snapped sharply, startling me as I jumped and focused my full attention on him and the white one.
"W-Whoa, I'm sorry for trespassing in your territory so please don't kill me because I'm trying to get back to civilization," I pleaded nervously and the black canine started looking even more pissed if that was possible.
"Likely story, you just want to destroy this place like everywhere else so quit lying to us, human!" the black canine growled as he looked pretty agitated and I started feeling terrified at the expression of pure hostility in his eyes.
"Wait, I'm not lying because I'm just trying to survive so that I can get back home, so please don't hurt me!" I exclaimed in terror just as the white canine looked at the black one.
"Kouya, he might be telling the truth since he isn't carrying any of those weapons the humans use and he doesn't have the scent of blood or death on him, so maybe we should give him the benefit of the doubt," the white canine suggested before Kouya looked at him like he had lost his marbles.
"Are you out of your mind, Ginro?! You know what his kind did to us, how they took our mountain and are responsible for you starving to death and killing me afterward!" Kouya exclaimed in disbelief but Ginro smiled at him.
"Yes, it's true that our mountain was taken from us because of humans and that they are partly responsible for us dying but this one has my interest since his coverings look unlike any of the ones the other humans wore, not to mention that he speaks strangely so I'm rather curious about him," Ginro admitted, taking me by surprise while Kouya looked bewildered by what his friend said.
"Ginro, please think about what you are saying because he is a human and his kind are capable of nothing but destruction," Kouya reasoned with a look of shock on his face, just as I cleared my throat to get his attention.
"Um, I'm right here," I spoke up with a look of uncertainty and flinched when Kouya sent me a nasty glare.
"I wasn't talking to you, human," Kouya spat out hatefully, making me lean back with my hands up to placate him.
"Come now, Kouya, you can't tell me you aren't even the least bit interested in this human, correct?" Ginro questioned and Kouya sent him an annoyed look.
"No, I'm not," Kouya retorted irritably but Ginro chuckled and turned his attention to me.
"Either way, I am quite curious to learn more about this human since the way he's dressed and the way he speaks intrigues me, which is why I want him to travel with us for the time being," Ginro said, prompting Kouya to look at him like he's lost his mind while I was uncertain about this.
"Uh, are you sure that's a good idea? Your friend looks like he wants to rip my throat out," I pointed out uneasily and Ginro sent me a reassuring smile.
"You're always free to leave us if that's what you wish, but I am rather curious about you since you look and speak differently than the other humans we have encountered so do not worry about Kouya, he can always keep an eye on you if that will make him feel better," Ginro told me as he looked at Kouya, who was appearing pensive and annoyed until he let out a sigh of resignation and sent me a menacing glare.
"If I see any signs that you are planning something against us, then I will personally rip you to shreds," Kouya warned darkly, making a chill run down my spine and I knew that he wasn't joking.
"I just want to go home and I don't want to die, so I don't plan on betraying you guys or anything since that wouldn't end so well for me," I assured uneasily but Kouya scoffed.
"I doubt it so I'll be watching you, human," Kouya warned while Ginro sweatdropped from how stubborn he was being before turning his attention to me.
"Well, now that that's out of the way, what's your name?" Ginro inquired and I rubbed the back of my head.
"Uh...Christopher Davidson," I replied quietly, causing Ginro and even Kouya to look pretty confused by the name.
"Hmm...how very strange, never heard of a name like that before," Ginro muttered while looking puzzled, which was pretty odd to see since canines aren't supposed to be that expressive but Ginro and Kouya aren't ordinary canines so it shouldn't be all surprising.
"Um, if it helps, you could call me Chris since it's easier," I offered and Kouya scrunched his muzzle up.
"What kind of a stupid name is Chris?" Kouya wondered and I felt offended by that.
"Well, Chris is a pretty common name where I come from," I stated and Ginro perked up.
"Oh? Why don't you tell us all about it then?" Ginro asked and I gestured for him and Kouya to take a seat before I sat down in front of the fire and added more sticks to keep it going as Ginro approached to lay down near me, only Kouya didn't move and simply huffed while sending me looks of suspicion and distrust so I knew it would take a while before he warmed up to me as I started explaining.
I explained to Ginro and Kouya how I'm from a small town in Montana and they expressed confusion while Ginro asked me if it was the land I hail from, making me wonder what he was talking about when I later learned from him that I wasn't in Montana and that he and Kouya didn't know what the United States was.
That had convinced me that something was wrong and I asked Ginro where I was, then he replied that I was in Nippon and I froze up from that since I recognized the name as Japan's former name that hadn't been used since the feudal period.
I was freaking out but I tried not to show it since it would've given Kouya all the excuse he needed to attack me so I managed to calm down and knew that I needed to plan out my next step because if Ginro was right, then I was 400 years in the past and I didn't even know how it's possible that I got here.
Even so, I had agreed to travel with Ginro and Kouya for the time being, much to the black canine's displeasure and as a week went by with me crafting a bow and arrows, Kouya mostly displayed hostility or gave me the cold shoulder and it was starting to annoy me a little bit.
Still, I stayed out of his way and he simply pretended that I didn't exist, which was fine with me but the tension was still thick between us as Ginro told me stories about what their lives were like before they died, making me feel guilty that my kind was responsible for driving him and Kouya from their home mountain while chasing them away whenever they tried to find a place to call home until Ginro died from starvation and Kouya was killed by a human later.
At that time, I didn't blame Kouya anymore for being resentful and hostile to me since I would feel the same way if I was in his place so I tried to at least be kind to him but he wasn't having it and was becoming even more suspicious about my recent change in behavior so I backed off since I didn't want him getting the wrong impression and thinking that I was being manipulative.
Now, I had hunted a deer since Ginro told me how he and Kouya loved deer meat and I skinned the dead deer before cooking portions for me, Ginro, and Kouya as I put different spices on mine and the others' while waiting until the meat was done and the two canines had returned from whatever they were doing out in the forest when they paused at the sight of me cooking deer meat.
"Hey, I figure you guys must be hungry by now so I hunted a deer for you guys," I greeted as I picked up a fully cooked and seasoned deer meat before throwing it at them and Ginro widened his eyes before diving after the meat and eating it.
"Human, what have you done to the meat?!" Kouya exclaimed as he glared at me with suspicion in his eyes and I sighed in exasperation.
"Calm down, I just cooked it so it would taste better for you and Ginro so unless you want to starve yourself, then eat it," I said with a deadpan look since I was starting to get tired of him giving me the third degree all the time.
Kouya just scowled at me and padded away without eating any meat before sitting at the edge of the clearing with his back turned to me, making me sweatdrop at his attitude and I didn't know what else to do since I tried being nice and stayed out of his way for this past week, but he isn't giving me a chance because of his stubbornness as I noticed Ginro looking concerned and turned his attention to Kouya.
"Kouya, you need your strength so eat some meat," Ginro spoke before looking down with a solemn expression but Kouya didn't budge and Ginro added, "If he wanted to hurt us, he would've done it by now so please eat."
With that said, I heard Kouya's stomach rumbling and he soon grumbled before turning around and heading to the fire where I was done with his portion of deer meat and he sat down near me, just as I held out the deer meat with a kind smile.
Kouya stared at me skeptically for a short time before sniffing at the meat, then he suddenly snatched it from my hand and proceeded to move away when he came to a stop a few feet away and started eating while glancing at me a few times but ultimately not saying anything so I knew it was going to take a while until I gained his trust because of what he and Ginro were put through by other members of my kind.
After that, we continued traveling for a while and I noticed that something was changing between me and Kouya since he wasn't as hostile as before and appeared mostly quiet and lost in thought, but I didn't ask what was on his mind since I didn't want him getting hostile again but it wasn't until I was making more arrows that I noticed him approaching me.
"Hey, you want something?" I asked curiously as I stopped what I was doing to focus on him, then I was surprised to see Kouya looking hesitant as he stared at me with a frown.
"Listen, we have been traveling together for many days and you haven't shown any signs of wanting to hurt or deceive me and Ginro, so I am willing to at least tolerate you for the time being but understand that I didn't make this choice lightly so don't make me regret this," Kouya told me while looking very serious.
I was stunned to hear him say that since it must've been really hard for him to get past his stubborn pride and be willing to give me a chance, so I smiled and sent him a nod since he probably wasn't looking for a huge speech or something, just acknowledgment for his words and Kouya padded away after that so at least he was starting to warm up to me.
After that, time had passed by and Kouya became less hostile and more trusting while Ginro and I grew closer when we all became close friends, which I grew to enjoy the longer I spent in this time period but I had accepted at this point that there's no way back home and the villages we had spotted and mostly avoided proved that I was no longer in the modern era, especially since the horse-drawn carriages also clued me in that I wasn't home anymore so that was a little disheartening.
Still, Ginro and Kouya at least made my time here a little more bearable and now the three of us sat around a campfire, having traveled for a month now as I had grown to appreciate the nature all around us and my hair had grown to my shoulders with my face now sporting a beard, my clothes looking a little rough as I had made a stupid joke and the two canines piled onto me in response with the three of us laughing our asses off and acting mostly stupid when my eyes turned serious as Ginro and Kouya got off me.
"Hey guys, when I die..." I trailed off as Ginro snuggled against me and Kouya sat close to my left.
"Please don't talk about that because we know that we'll outlive you by many years," Ginro said as he snuggled closer and Kouya didn't respond to my words but I noticed he was slightly pensive.
"I'm serious because when I die, will you two become bad Ayakashi? When I die, can you forgive the humans? We cause so much damage to the world, hurt others, demolish forests, cause wars, and start fires that end the lives of many species and mostly over some stupid cause," I spoke quietly and the two canines didn't say anything, looking surprised by what I said.
"Chris..." Kouya trailed off and couldn't finish his sentence while I wrapped my arms around Ginro and Kouya's necks before pulling them closer to me.
"Either we forget to put the fire out before we leave or because we wanted this and that, which is usually the only reason humans fight and destroy so can you forgive us? But...would you help me...create?
So many things have been destroyed, so many animals forced out of their homes and driven to extinction like you guys...it hurts when I think about what your lives were like after the humans came, how much hell you both endured," I said solemnly and Kouya sighed.
"It's not your burden to fix the humans, Chris," Kouya replied and I looked at the dark canine that I started seeing as an older brother while letting out a chuckle.
"You talk as if I'm not one...seriously though, this world has so much hatred in it and I don't want you two to drown in it and continue the cycle of pain and suffering, so once I'm gone, will you two forgive the humans and that nothing will change between us?
I'm not asking you guys to forget what they did, I'm just asking you two to give them another chance," I said as I stared up at the night sky with a thoughtful expression.
"I promise that nothing will change between us and you're a human, so if there are more humans like you, then I can forgive them," Kouya replied and Ginro smirked.
"I agree, if there are humans as kind as you, then the human race isn't so bad but what do you want us to create?" Ginro asked while looking at me.
"An example, we've become close friends this past month and get along so well but no one gives the Ayakashi a chance, and it's true that they never try to co-exist with the humans, but you two are okay living with me, right?" I asked and the two canine spirits nodded before I added, "I know there are Ayakashi that do terrible things from what I've seen this past month, but if there are more Ayakashi like you two in this world, then I can forgive the Ayakashi too."
After that, a few weeks had gone by and we continued traveling but I had a feeling that something big would happen soon that would change our lives forever and it did when we were camping one night and Kouya started looking alert while tensing up.
"What is it, Kouya?" I asked as Ginro focused on the dark canine.
"I smell a human that's nearby," Kouya informed us and Ginro looked curious.
"Truly?" Ginro inquired with a look of interest and Kouya nodded.
"Yes, the human is near so follow me," Kouya said before he started heading into the forest, prompting Ginro and me to follow him as we left our campsite.
I didn't know who Kouya detected and if the person was friendly or not so we would have to be careful as we continued through the forest and I got my bow ready just in case the person we find was hostile, then we arrived at a section of the forest and I could see someone up ahead while he had a dog with him.
"There, I knew I smelled a human," Kouya said while I was studying the man who was sitting on the ground while the dog that was with him was growling at us and looking ready to pounce.
The man was wearing what appeared to be some kind of dark purple uniform that I didn't recognize while he had sandals and a straw hat as he held a staff in one hand, then I looked at the dog and saw that he was clearly agitated while he had black fur with white on his muzzle, paws, and tail but I was tense since the dog looked like he wanted to attack us.
"Calm down, Hakubi," the man placated with an Asian accent as he simply had a calm smile.
"Who are you?" I questioned while getting my bow ready, then the man looked surprised to see me.
"How curious, I wasn't expecting a fellow human with those two Ayakashi but no matter, we can now proceed with our business," the man stated as he stood up and I didn't like the sound of that as I got ready to defend myself and my two canine friends.
"You didn't answer my question, now who are you and why did you come here?" I asked as I looked tense since I had no idea why this man was here or what he had planned.
"Very well, I am Tokimori Hazuma and my purpose is to simply terminate the two Ayakashi that are with you," Tokimori replied and my eyes widened as Ginro looked alarmed and Kouya started growling while he got agitated.
"What did you just say?! I'll be damned if I'll let you kill me and Ginro, human!" Kouya snarled before he suddenly charged at Tokimori, much to my alarm.
"Kouya, don't!" I shouted as I reached out for him.
"Ketsu!" Tokimori declared as he made some kind of hand-sign and I was startled to see Kouya imprisoned in a blue barrier that was in the shape of a cube as the dark canine collided into the transparent wall in front of him.
"What is this?!" Kouya exclaimed in outrage as he started bashing against the barrier to try and escape.
"It's no use, my kekkai specifically traps Ayakashi and destroys them so quit fighting, this will be over quickly," Tokimori stated and my eyes widened in horror when I realized that the barrier was going to kill Kouya unless Ginro and I did something to stop it.
"Wait, don't kill him!" I shouted with a tone of panic in my voice, catching the attention of Tokimori.
"I must, it is my sworn duty to destroy Ayakashi and those two that are with you need to be destroyed unless they become a threat later," Tokimori told me stoically.
"Please, he's my friend so don't kill him," I pleaded desperately and that caught Tokimori's attention.
"A human is friends with an Ayakashi? How curious, and you dress and speak strangely, but I must do my duty so it will be painless for them," Tokimori reassured before Ginro stepped forward.
"Wait, I have an offer for you so hear me out," Ginro said while Kouya stopped bashing himself against the barrier since it was clear he wasn't breaking out of that thing.
"Oh? You wish to bargain for your friend's life? Very well, what do you wish to offer me?" Tokimori questioned with a look of curiosity as I noticed that Hakubi wasn't growling anymore but he still looked wary so I had to be careful and not agitate him into attacking us.
"Instead of killing him, let him go and have him exiled while in return, I agree to serve you and any future generations after you," Ginro offered and Kouya looked stunned to hear that while I nodded in agreement.
"Exactly, Ginro would make a good ally and Kouya won't ever return so it's a good deal if I have to be honest," I pointed out while Kouya stared and me and Ginro like we had lost our minds.
"Ginro, Chris, what are you doing?!" Kouya exclaimed in disbelief and I looked at him.
"Saving your life, so please let us do this," I reasoned but Kouya didn't appear convinced.
"He may not hold his end of the deal so think about what you two are doing!" Kouya yelled and Ginro looked at him.
"We know there's a good chance that he won't, but please trust us in doing this because we don't want to lose you," Ginro stated grimly as Tokimori looked thoughtful and appeared to consider the offer.
"Hmm, it is an interesting proposal so how can you two be sure that I won't betray you and destroy your friend anyway?" Tokimori asked with a look of interest.
"We don't, but making this deal is the only way to save Kouya so will you accept? I asked and Tokimori hummed in thought while pondering what I said until he eventually nodded.
"Very well, I shall release your friend on the condition that he leaves this land and never return while I accept the white Ayakashi's offer to serve me," Tokimori agreed before dispersing the square barrier to free Kouya, who looked far from happy.
"You two are making a big mistake trusting this human and Ginro, it is simply appalling that you would lower yourself into becoming nothing more than that human's pet...we are mountain dogs that shouldn't bow down to humans because they destroy everything they touch," Kouya said and that hurt me slightly.
"Kouya, do you also think that way about me?" I questioned bitterly and Kouya looked taken aback before sighing.
"Unlike most humans, you are one of the more...bearable ones so I don't see you as one of those kinds of humans that crave destruction and cruelty," Kouya admitted while Ginro looked regretful.
"Kouya, I wish there would've been another way but we had to act quickly or that human would've killed you," Ginro said and Kouya frowned at that.
"Maybe, but you shouldn't have to enslave yourself to that human so I really hope you know what you're doing," Kouya said before I walked over and knelt down in front of the dark canine, wrapping my arms around his neck and he tensed slightly.
"Kouya, no matter what happens between all three of us, you will always be like a brother to me," I said quietly and Kouya didn't say anything for a short while as I held him until I removed my arms from his neck and moved away from the dark canine.
Kouya sent me a single nod and turned around before beginning to make his way into the forest, pausing to send me and Ginro one last bitter look before taking off through the trees as tears welled up in my eyes but I forced it down since I needed to focus on what to do next now that the dark canine I saw as a brother was gone.
A/N So, looks like this chapter ended in a bitter manner but the next chapter won't have a happy ending for everyone since certain events will lead to something pretty tragic so let me know what you think and stay tuned.
