30 year old, detective Camille Anderson. Severe stab wound to the abdomen. Lower left flank in the upper left quadrant. GCS 14, verbalizing and not cooperative. VS 90, BP 140/80 followed with heavy internal bleeding.
April and Meredith brought her into the trauma room.
"Page doctor Bailey." Meredith called out.
"What do we got?" Miranda asked walking into the room.
"Portable ultrasound isn't working."
"Let me see." Miranda said sternly as she grabbed the wand. She moved it around a little before stopping.
"Ah...you see right here. Liver and kidneys." Miranda said pointing before pointing to the dark spaces around the liver and kidneys
"That's blood and a lot of it. Severe liver laceration. Let's get her down to the o.r. immediately. Meredith you're with me." Miranda yelled walking out of the trauma room.
Ben sat in the waiting room and he had his face in his hands.
He looked up as the sounds of foot steps alerted him.
"Detective Warren."
"Chief." Ben stated looking up at the older black man.
"Camille is going to be okay."
"This was a close one cap' this could have gotten bad." Ben spoke looking down.
"Her cover was blown, she couldn't play the role to the t. This role is harder for any cop. Cops are spotted out easily by criminals." His captain replied.
"Hi I am doctor Miranda Bailey." Miranda said as she walked into the waiting room.
Ben watched as the short woman stared at him and his captain. He could tell she was analyzing them.
"Uh you two are her co-workers. Was her family notified."
"She is alone...other than her sister who lives out of state and will be on a flight as soon as she can but for now it's just us." Ben spoke softly.
Miranda pursed her lips together silently deciding if she should tell them information.
"We are family." Ben said and Miranda looked into his eyes and gave a slight smile. She felt this way about her coworker-family too.
"Alright. We did an emergency ultrasound when Camille was brought in. The knife tore through her liver giving her a grade 3 liver laceration. I had to giveher blood transfusion because she'd lost so much blood and I repaired the damages. It was touch and go but you have a fighter on your hands and she will not give up without a fight.
She will also be monitored in ICU and will have a resident checking her abdomen for swelling or bruising every 1 to 2 hours. She will also have an ultrasound once a day to check for bleeding in the area." Miranda finished.
Ben nodded taking everything in. "So how long will she be down in her career field and when can we see her."
"About 2 to 3months, if she's at her best and everything is critical stage right now so, when she is sent to regular floor. " Miranda answered and she continued to look into the stranger's eyes again. She didn't know what it was but it was something so captivating about them.
"Thank you so much Doctor Bailey." Ben told her with a smile.
"You are more than welcome detective." Miranda responded turning on her heel to leave.
"I'm a doctor as well." Ben said
"You are?" Miranda questioned looking him up and down. She would have never thought.
"Yup, anesthesiologist I did it for about 8 years before I made the career switch." Ben voiced and Miranda smiled again.
"Hmmm interesting." She noted.
"And why is that?"
"You're a man of many layers. I could have assumed that you were just one dimensional."
"Oh really." Ben replied smug like, glad that he wasn't.
"Yes, really but you proved me wrong. You know what they say, can't judge a book by the cover."
"Have a good day detective doctor...Warren." Miranda squinted looking at his name that was on his vest. "I will be back with more information if I can. If not, I will send a resident out."
"Have a good day as well and thank you."
"Thank you." Captain Smith praised as she walked away.
Ben took the moment and watched her walk gracefully. She was a beautiful woman and she did the scrubs she had on justice.
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking." Smith asked.
Ben looked over at his captain puzzled. "Apparently I'm not."
"Come on Detective, you got to be better than this. You're supposed to be 3 steps ahead than the rest" Smith laughed.
"We need her." Captain said nodding his head in the direction Miranda went.
"Need her for what?" Ben asked already knowing what he was talking about.
Captain Smith gave Ben a knowing look.
"No." Ben said firmly.
"Detective."
"Why would we put a civilian's life in danger." Ben asked.
"She would fit the part perfectly. All of our people that go undercover can't play the surgeon part correctly and she has it down to a science. This is her life style. She's a short black woman that's a surgeon. Esposito won't pick up on her."
"Captain, she's defenseless. She can't fight back. Shoot back. She would be in constant danger." Ben added.
"Warren we are not sending her directly into the field. She would go undercover. Esposito has already moved to another state by now. We need to get our team and people tracking him now. This man and his men are moving Narcotics and it's starting in the hospital. We need someone on the inside and I have a good feeling that she is the one that will help us bring this operation down. She can get close to the doctors find out information that will help us."
Ben blew out a breath. It was a great idea but he was nervous about putting her in danger. Anything could happen and that's even if she agrees to work with them because she doesn't have too.
"She can't go into that field without an expert." Ben said thinking.
"I know, that's why you are going to go with her. Your background knowledge on anesthesia. You will fit into the undercover operation perfectly. We can send you to the hospital to be an anesthesiologist and you both would look like a lovely couple.
"A couple?" Ben asked.
"Yes, you know Esposito only trust married couples. It's like he has some sort of complex. Only marriage is right in his eyes. "
"Okay." Ben relented.
"Okay great, I'm calling our cyber tech to find out anything. We need his next move." Captain Smith said getting up. "How are you going to ask her?"
"Ask her? Why do I have too?" Ben questioned.
"Because you both were just talking and it wasn't so strange then it was free."
"You need to give me more information and more knowledge about the undercover operation before I present anything to this woman." Ben said firmly and watched as his captain nodded.
Two days passed and Camille was out of Icu. She was doing okay and responsive.
Ben's captain already brought him the case file and all the information he needed. Ben just didn't know how to ask this woman if she would participate to bring a criminal down.
"Hey sleepy head." Ben said looking at his partner.
"Warren." Camille swallowed squinting her eyes.
"Yeah I'm here."
"You always are." She chimed.
"Hey, you're not getting rid of me that easily." Ben joked smiling.
"You got that right. I guess we can't count this as a little cold feet."
Ben laughed " No we can't. Besides getting stabbed is not the way to opt out of our engagement." Ben joked once more.
"No, that's not…that's the chump way out and uh uh next year Ben Warren. You got me until death do us part." She teased.
"I like that." Ben smiled as he kissed her hand.
"Hey where is all of my things. My ring was on my necklace." She said concerned.
"It's okay. I saw it and I put it up for you." Ben responded.
"When do you think we should tell captain of our engagement?" Ben asked.
"Well we've been engaged over 6 months. I just don't want them to switch us as partners." She said softly.
"Speaking of Partners. Captain wants me to ask a civilian to go under cover with me as a married couple."
"What? Why not me?"
"He wants a real surgeon who can execute the role."
"Dam I guess he is right but I don't want my fiancé pretending to be married to someone else and living in a house with another woman."
"Babe don't you trust me. Everything that I would do would be for the job" Ben said seriously.
"I knowwww." Camille whined. "But who would be the surgeon?"
"Uh she is-
"Hi, you are a wake." Miranda greeted entering the room. Ben looked over at her and he was instantly nervous again. He needed to get this off his chest and ask her.
"How are you feeling?" Miranda asked checking her charts.
Ben watched as the women talked and Miranda wrote down and adjusted things. He honestly was intrigued by her.
later that night Ben went down to the cafeteria and he grabbed him a cup of coffee sitting at the table by himself. No one else was in there and he used the as an opportunity to read over the case file and talk to his team to accumulate more information.
Ben reached for his gun when the door open.
Miranda could see his alertness and she put her hands up even though his gun wasn't drawn or pointed at her.
"Calm down cowboy it's just me." Miranda teased.
"Sorry." Ben said sheepishly. "It's a habit."
"I can see that." Miranda joked.
Miranda grabbed her self a cup of coffee.
"On call?" Ben questioned.
"Yup." Miranda responded popping the P.
"I remember those days." Ben stated with a hint of amusement.
"Yeah, don't you have long days and nights too?"
"Yeah some days the cases won't stop and it's takes months to crack." Ben responded.
Miranda walked closer and Ben offered the seat across from him.
"I have to ask you something Dr. Bailey... Miranda if I may, and I know this is going to sound crazy but here me out first." Ben said seriously.
Miranda sat her coffee on the table and looked into his eyes giving him her undivided attention.
"We need your help." "The City of Washington police Department and FBI"
Miranda nodded slowly wanting him to say with what.
"There is Drug Operation. Lead by the name of a man Esposito. He is Italian and has been running this operation for years. So much so that he has and inside ring through hospitals and doctors are in on it." Ben stated and Miranda leaned in closer now wondering if it was going on here.
"My partner was sent undercover to play a doctor and she couldn't execute it well and this is where we need you."
"We need you to go undercover, in California and work at the hospital his people are at. We need someone who lives a surgeon life style and could know medical information to not blow their cover and get close to the other doctors."
Miranda opened her mouth to protest but Ben cut her off as he kept talking. He explained more about it and what he wanted her to do.
"Wait wait." Miranda said putting her hands up to silence him.
"You want to send me in the lion's den with criminals and hang amongst them? You might have medical and police knowledge but I don't. I would never be able to defend myself. I could get killed or stabbed like your partner." Miranda said standing.
"Wait Miranda please. I would play an anesthesiologist and your husband. I would never let anything happen to you. I promise."
"I'm sure that's the same thing you told your partner." Miranda whispered. " this conversation is over."
"My partner was undercover with another individual and I was home. Miranda you would have my word."
"I have family and a -
"A son. I know."
"What you did a background check on me?" and Ben nodded.
Miranda scuffed and rolled her eyes.
"Think about your son. We are trying to create a better world for our children. Children, woman and families have died because of this Narcotic that's coming through these hospitals. We just want everyone to be safe and Esposito to be brought to justice and you are the key Miranda." Ben pleaded.
"I-I I just can't." Miranda stuttered as she stumbled out of the door.
