Rated M: For language and brief descriptions of violence.

Beca woke to the sounds of a respirator pumping oxygen and a heart rate monitor beeping rhythmically next to her. She looked around the room and took in the bleached walls of a hospital room and tried to sit up, only she couldn't move. She tried again and managed to sit about half way up when the machines next to her started going crazy and several nurses rushed into the room and forced her back down.

"Beca. Beca sweety we need you to calm down." one of the nurses said as she and her coworker tried to push Beca back down on the bed.

"My Mom! Where's my mom and dad?" Beca screamed through the oxygen mask.

"Beca you have to calm down." The nurses tried to push her down again but a doctor walked in and ordered that Beca be given a mild sedative. Beca tried to keep struggling but the sedative worked its way through her system and she started to lose consciousness. As her eyes began to shut and her brain succumbed to the fog the last thought running through her mind was why she couldn't feel her legs.

"Doctor, I'm not about to let you experiment with one of my patients. Especially after what happened last time."

"I've changed the programming, what happened last time won't happen again I promise."

"I don't care, I'm not putting someone else through that again."

"Well it's a good thing that decision isn't up to you is it."

Beca tried to keep listening but the sedatives must have kicked back in and she promptly fell back asleep.

The next time Beca woke up she managed to stay awake. Her sleep had been plagued with images of what had happened to her and her parents. She had come home from school to find her parents laying in a pool of blood. She had rushed forward and dialed nine one one when she heard someone behind her. When she turned around she was hit with a searing pain in her stomach and the next thing she remembered was waking up in the hospital.

"Hey, you're awake." A man in a long trench coat stood up from his chair and made his way to stand next to her bed. "Hello Beca my name is Detective Ericson, I was hoping to ask you a few questions."

"Where are my parents?" Beca asked. Her nightmares gave her a pretty good idea of where they were but she was hoping against hope that they were just nightmares.

"I'm sorry kid, but they're gone." The words rang in her ears, the detective continued talking but she wasn't listening. She was only seventeen and now she was all alone. She had one more week of her junior year and now she had no idea what she was supposed to do. She tried to get up from her bed, she needed space to try and clear her head but when she got off the bed her legs wouldn't take her weight and she fell to the floor. "Whoa easy there kid. Hey can we get some help in here?!" The two nurses from before came in and helped Beca back onto the bed.

"What's going on, why can't I feel my legs?" Beca was starting to panic, there were too many things going on at once.

"I told you that you needed to wait until I talked to her." A man in a white lab coat entered the room and gave the detective a pointed look. "All right I need everyone outside now." The doctor waited until the nurses and the detective had left the room. "Hello Ms. Mitchell it's nice to see you back in the land of the living. You gave us quite a scare."

"What's going on? No one's telling me anything, what happened to my parents? Why can't I feel my legs?" Beca could feel her world closing in on her as the doctor gave her a solemn look.

"Your parents were shot and killed two days ago. By the time the ambulance showed up there was nothing the paramedics could do and they were declared dead on arrival." The doctor stopped to collect his thoughts. "They did manage to save you and you got very lucky. Apparently they had to resuscitate you twice on route to the hospital and when you got here we immediately moved you to an operating room. There was a bullet that had torn through your stomach and lodged itself in your spine. We managed to remove the bullet and stitch up your stomach but there wasn't anything we could do with your spinal cord."

"My parents are gone?"

"I'm afraid so." The doctor gave her a sympathetic look. "Is there anyone you can think of to call? Aunt, uncle, grandparent maybe?"

Beca shook her head before answering. "My parents don't have any siblings and my only surviving grandparent is in his nineties and lives in Florida. He wouldn't be able to help."

"Alright well you would have had to stay in the hospital for a while anyway. We need to make sure that nothing pulls apart and make sure that you don't start to bleed internally again."

"Thank you doctor...who? I can't make out your name tag."

"Tennant, Doctor David Tennant but you can just call me Dave."

"Are you sure there's nothing you can do to fix my spine?" Beca watched as the doctor's face contorted into one of hesitation. She could tell he was holding something back and wasn't about to let him keep something from her that could help make this terrible just a bit better. "Doc if there is something that can help please tell me, I've lost so much already." Beca was almost to the point of tears as the shock wore off and reality set it.

Dave let out a sigh and his shoulders slumped before he looked Beca in the eye. "There might be a way." Beca perked up but before she could say anything the doctor continued. "It's a highly experimental procedure and as your doctor I advise against it since it could end up doing more harm than good."

"Doc please, I've already lost so much." Beca's voice was filled with desperation and Doctor Tennant never stood a chance. He could understand what the girl was going through and the pleading look she was giving him tore through his resolve.

"I'll make some calls." The look of relief that came over Beca's face was worth it. He might not agree with what he was proposing but in the end he couldn't help but hold out hope for the girl.

"Thank you doctor." Beca said.

"Don't thank me yet, you don't know what you've signed up for," he stood up from his chair and prepared to leave, "and I told you," he said as he made his way to the door, "call me Dave."

After Doctor Tennant left Beca was given some time to herself to try and make sense of things. She still couldn't quite believe that her parents were gone and she was now an orphan. The detective came back and interviewed her and after some helpful nudges he managed to get her to remember that the assailant was tall, blond and had a tattoo on his face. With that information the police were able to track down the suspect and Beca identified him in a police lineup.

The guy was apparently someone who Anna Mitchell, a public defense attorney, had represented in court but hadn't managed to "protect". Detective Ericson told Beca that the guy was lucky that her mother had even agreed to take the case since there was a mountain of evidence against him and her mother knew it was an impossible case. So instead of feeling gratitude for her mother for trying to defend him he blamed Anna for his sentence and took revenge. Beca's father had tried to stop the guy when he broke into their house but was gunned down for his efforts with Beca's mother following not long after.

Beca couldn't make any sense of it. Her mother had always been a kind and caring person who dedicated her life to defending people who couldn't defend themselves. And instead of taking responsibility for his own actions this criminal decided to put all the blame on the one person who tried to help him. It had all been so senseless and it made Beca's blood boil. She swore that she would do everything in her power to keep what happened to her from happening to someone else.

Only that would have to wait. Being paralyzed from the waist down tends to put a damper on righteous crusades. She was pulled from her thoughts when a knock on her door stole her attention.

"Hey Shawshank, how you doin?" Fat Amy strolled into Beca's room with a hesitant smile on her face. Amy, Beca's one and only friend, had been her saving grace over the last few days. She became a shoulder for Beca to cry on and had somehow managed to make her laugh despite everything that had happened. She had even been there to take Beca to her parents' funeral, something that Beca had been concerned that she wouldn't be able to attend.

"About the same Ames, don't really know how I could be doing better." Beca shrugged. Granted if it had not been for Amy's support Beca guessed that she probably would have sunk into depression and never had made her way back out.

"Well I've got some good news for ya. You don't have to take finals." Amy said while making jazz hands in the air.

"Wait really, I hadn't really thought of that but I assumed I was going to have to repeat junior year." Beca allowed a small smile to tug at her lips. It definitely hadn't been at the forefront of her mind but not having to worry about finals was a tremendous weight off her chest that she didn't even realize was there.

"Yup, the principal lady called me into her office today and said that all your grades were good enough that you didn't need to worry." Amy said as she reached over and stole Beca's sandwich from the serving tray. Beca didn't really mind since she didn't have much of an appetite anymore. Plus Amy might be the only person she knew that could actually stomach hospital food.

"Ahem." Both girls turned to see a tall brunette woman standing in the door. "Is one of you Beca Mitchell?" The girls glanced at each other before Beca slowly raised her hand. "Perfect, my name's Dr. Conrad. Dr. Tennant called and said that you had some questions about looking into getting your legs back." Beca nodded her head as the doctor made her way into the room.

"Wait a minute, Conrad like Stacie Conrad?" Amy asked.

"Oh, you two know my daughter?"

"Not really, we go to the same school but we're not exactly part of the same social circle." Beca told the doctor. If Beca and Amy were the "outcasts" of the school then Stacie and her friends were the "popular" kids.

"Huh, well that's too bad. Although I bet that changes quickly." Beca shot a questioning look at Dr. Conrad and waited for her to explain. "If you decide to go through with the procedure then Stacie will be assisting me and will be helping you through the process."

"Stacie's going to be helping?" Beca was rather shocked to hear this, she didn't really talk to Stacie but the impression Beca had gotten wasn't one of intelligence.

"Yup, she takes after me, child prodigy and all that." Dr. Conrad made her way over and sat in a chair next to the bed.

"Wait, hold on a second, what procedure?" Amy asked.

Before Beca could say anything Dr. Conrad interjected. "I'm sorry but I can really only discuss that with Beca."

"Sorry Amy but do you think that you could give us a minute?" Beca shot Amy a pleading look and Amy just sighed and left the room. "Soooo Doc, You got some sort of super drug to fix my spine?"

"Nope, no drugs. Well some drugs, in order for the procedure to work we'll have to put you on some steroids to prep your body for the adjustments."

"So what exactly are you going to do to me?" Beca was getting a little concerned after she heard steroids.

Dr. Conrad was quick to realize this and rushed to reassure Beca. "There's no need to worry. The long and short of it is we're going to pump your body full of nanobots."

Beca sat in silence for a solid minute before responding. "Wait, what?"

"I took a look at your charts and spoke extensively with Dr. Tennant and I believe that you are a perfect candidate for my experimental nanobots. The nanites will be able to locate the problem with your spine and basically replace your spinal cord." Dr. Conrad sat back in her seat with a smug smile on her face. Beca just stared at her with a look of complete disbelief. This sounded like something straight out of one of those dopey science fiction movies her mom loved so much.

"Now I understand that your parents are no longer with us. That they were killed rather violently?" Dr. Conrad tried to be gentle but she needed to see Beca's reaction to the questions. She saw Beca's hands tighten into fists and watched as a determined glint appeared in her eyes and Conrad knew the answer to her next question before she even asked it.

"Would you like to keep that from happening to someone else?" That earned Beca's attention. "There is something we can do with the nanites that can help you. Would you be interested in something like that?"

"Ya, let's remix this business."

The next week was a bit of a blur, Amy wasn't able to visit as often since she had to study for her own finals. She had been replaced by one Stacie Conrad who had been stopping by daily to give Beca her shots that she needed for the procedure.

"Hey sexy, how you doin?" Stacie asked as she entered Beca's hospital room.

"Stacie, why do you feel the need to flirt with me every time you see me?" Beca asked. And she had. Every. Single. Time. Which had thrown Beca for a loop since for the past three years Stacie had largely ignored Beca and now Beca couldn't seem to get her to stop.

"Maybe I'm making up for lost time." Stacie said with a wink. "Seriously Beca I feel a little bad for ignoring you until now and I kind of regret it, you're pretty cool."

"Um, thanks."

"Don't worry about it, and besides you're cute and everything but I got my eye on someone else." Stacie said as she administered Beca's shot.

"Really, who?" Beca was shocked, Stacie was a known player and the idea that she could actually be crushing on someone was rather surprising.

"Aubrey." Was Stacie's reply and if Beca was shocked before her surprise went through the roof. Before Beca could say anything Stacie spoke first. "All right, that should do it. We'll be able to perform the surgery tomorrow." Stacie packed up her things and stood up. "You ready to get mobile again?"

Beca just nodded her head and leaned back into her pillow. "You have no idea. Can't wait to get out of this place."

"Well try and get some sleep. You'll be up and walking before you know it." Stacie made her way over to the door but before she left Beca stopped her.

"Hey Stace, you sure this is going to work?"

"Of course I am."

"But how can you be sure?"

"Because I helped design it." Stacie said with an identical smirk that her mother was always sporting. "See you tomorrow Becs."

"Beca...Beca...Come on Beca wake up." Beca slowly opened her eyes to see Stacie and her mother staring down at her with identical smiles on their faces.

"Did it work?" Beca tried to move her legs but she still could even get her toes to wiggle.

"Yup! Now we just have to wait." Dr. Conrad informed her before sitting down in her chair.

"What do you mean wait, I thought it was going to fix me?" Beca had been expecting instant results but apparently that wasn't the case. "Can you finally explain to me how this works?"

"Of course. Those steroids we've been giving you have prepared your body for the introduction of an exterior presence inside your body." Stacie explained. "We basically had to make sure your white blood cells didn't attack the nanites like they would any other foreign object in your body." Stacie took her own seat as her mother took over the explanation.

"The surgery was in two parts. One, we had to install a control uplink onto your brain stem in your neck." Beca reached behind her and felt the small pad covering what would eventually become a small scar. "That uplink will connect your thought patterns to the nanobots throughout your body allowing you to control them at will."

Stacie chimed back in, "The second part of the surgery was to implant a small housing unit in your appendix."

"Wait why my appendix?" Beca asked.

"Well it's not like it's doing anything else. We've basically turned your appendix into a warehouse for idle nanobots that aren't actively keeping you mobile. The housing unit will also begin to produce new nanites as needed." The two Conrads looked rather pleased with themselves.

"And how does it do that?"

Dr. Conrad spoke up again, "The housing unit acts like a beehive, with the unit itself as the queen creating new nanites while the worker drones collect resources from your body to make new ones."

"What resources?" Beca was starting to think that this should have been covered before they implanted the thing in her body.

"Mostly fat cells," Stacie said. "The nanites power themselves by burning fat. So you can say goodbye to dieting because you're going to need to eat a lot. The nanites are basically giving your metabolism a major boost."

"They'll also absorb carbon atoms from the cells and use that to form the bodies of new nanobots." Dr. Conrad stated, "the nanites are completely self-sustaining so long as you provide them with fuel."

"So how long before I'm able to walk." Beca asked with a hopeful look on her face.

"I'd give it a week." Stacie theorized "Right now there aren't that many working in your body. There's maybe one hundred thousand active and it will take a bit before there are enough to reconnect your severed spinal cord."

Dr. Conrad jumped back in when she saw Beca's saddened expression, "That's what the control module in your neck is for. It receives signals from your nerves just like your brain does and it will automatically send the nanites to fix whatever is broken in your body."

"You're basically getting Wolverine's healing abilities from X-Men, albeit a little slower," Stacie explained. When Beca just gave her a blank look Stacie just sighed. "Really Beca, I know you said you didn't like movies but come on. Hugh Jackman is a total hottie, how have you not seen them?" Beca just looked from Stacie to Dr. Conrad only to see her head nodding in agreement.

"I saw Deadpool with Amy. Does that count?" She asked.

Stacie just laughed and shook her head. "Of course that's the one X-Men movie you've seen. But I get it Ryan Reynolds is hot too. And yes Deadpool's healing ability works. "

"Who said anything about Reynolds, I went to see Morena Baccarin." Beca's face immediately turned bright red as she realised what she had said.

Stacie smirked at her before nodding her head and laughing, "Nothing to be ashamed of Beca, Morena was definitely hot in that movie."

"All right I think we're getting a little off topic," Dr. Conrad said. "But yes, the nanites while healing your spine will also work to fix any preexisting conditions as well as any future injuries that might occur. Especially if you're serious about what we discussed."

Beca nodded her head and looked Dr. Conrad in the eye, "I'm definitely serious. If these nanites can really do what you say they can then I want to make sure I do everything in my power to keep what happened to me from happening to someone else."

"With great power comes great responsibility." Stacie said with a serious face and a solemn voice. Beca just stared at her in confusion again. "Really, you've got to be kidding me. As soon as you get your legs back I'm taking you to the movies so you can get a crash course in being a superhero."

The week after her surgery was one of the longest of her life. The anticipation of being able to move again was getting to her and the days seemed to drag on without end. However, by the end of the fourth day she was starting to get some feeling back in her feet. By the fifth day she was able to wiggle her toes and the muscles in her legs had begun to twitch. And finally the seventh day arrived. Dr. Conrad, Dr. Tennant, Stacie and Amy were all in attendance as Beca swung her legs over the edge of the bed and her feet hit the floor.

"Allright, here goes everything." Beca tried to adapt a cocky smirk but everyone could tell how nervous she really was. She let out a shaky breath and pushed herself off the bed. She stumbled forward a few steps but when Amy and Stacie moved to catch her she held up a hand and stood up straight. "See, nothing to it." Seeing that her friend was alright Amy immediately rushed forward and wrapped Beca in a massive bear hug.

"Ames...air...I..still need air!"

"Sorry Shortstack," Amy put Beca back on the ground. She was trying, unsuccessfully, to wipe away the tears pouring from her eyes and Beca realized just how worried her friend must have been for her. "I'm just so happy that I don't have to change your diaper."

Or maybe not.

"Diaper what diaper? Amy, did you really think I was wearing a diaper this whole time?" Beca glanced at the other people in the room only to see identical faces of disbelief.

"Ya, you said you couldn't feel anything below the waist so I thought…"

"Amy, I still know how to use the bathroom!"

"Well I know that now." Amy gave her a look that told Beca that Amy didn't think it was that far a leap in logic. Beca decided to let it go since they had kept Amy in the dark about almost everything that was going on. Dr. Conrad had explained that the nanobots were "classified" and that the less people who knew about it the better. All Amy knew was that Stacie's mom had somehow managed to fix Beca's back.

Beca looked across the room to see the two doctors having a mumbled conversation and made her way over to them. They stopped when they saw her and both gave her questioning looks. "I just wanted to thank you two for saving my life."

Dr. Tennant smiled at her, "Of course Beca, that's what we're here for." Dr. Conrad nodded and smiled in turn. Beca gave them another smile and turned to talk to Stacie and Amy. Tennant turned back to Conrad and gave her a pointed look. "You need to tell her."

"Not yet, let her enjoy this." Conrad turned back to watch the three teenagers laugh and joke as they made Beca jump up and down. "Not yet."

"Wow. This place is impressive." Beca looked around the large hanger that the Conrads had acquired to serve as a sort of training area. "How do you guys afford this?"

"Well technically speaking we can't," Stacie said. "Officially this building is closed for maintenance...and has been for the past five years. So hopefully we can make as much noise as we want and no one will notice."

After another week in the hospital, and about a dozen tests, Dr. Tennant had finally discharged Beca and she was free. The Conrads had graciously offered Beca a room in their house since they all agreed that she shouldn't have to live where her parents had been murdered. Now they were about to begin the process of turning Beca into a superhero.

"Okay," Dr. Conrad spoke up while opening her laptop. "According to this your total number of nanites is just over a trillion. That should be plenty for some preliminary tests."

Beca was admittedly a little unsettled at the thought of trillions of tiny robots floating around in her body. But those little nanites were the reason she was up and moving so she was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. "Allright...how does this work?"

"The control unit in your neck is capable of reading your thoughts and transferring any of your whims to the nanobots and they will react accordingly," Stacie explained.

"Within reason," Dr. Conrad interjected. "You won't be able to create anything more than physical shapes. For example you can't think 'flamethrower' and suddenly the nanites give you a working flamethrower," she explained. "Also, and this is important, if the nanites get separated from each other while outside of your body there is no way to get them back. The connection will be severed and you'll have to wait for more to be built."

"Right, got it. So what should we try first?" Beca was a little anxious to get started.

"How about you just start by imagining the nanites forming gloves around your hands," Stacie suggested.

"Okay, ya start small. Makes sense." Beca closed her eyes and concentrated. When she became aware of an itchy sensation in her hands she opened her eyes to see millions of tiny purple nanites coming out of her skin and covering her hands in a pair of gloves. "Holy shit this is weird! Why are they purple!?"

The two geniuses look at each other before shrugging. "Dealers choice, we thought it would look good on you. Is that okay?"

"Ya it's fine, just wondering." Beca couldn't stop staring at her hands as the nanites finished making the gloves. "So what's next?"

Stacie bent over and picked up a cinder block and placed it on a table that had been set up. "Now we want you to imagine those nanites making the gloves to turn the gloves into gauntlets," Stacie waited and watched as Beca complied and the nanites made short work of the change. "Now give the cinder block a karate chop."

Beca gave Stacie a questioning look but Stacie just nodded her head encouragingly. Beca shrugged and moved over to the table. She raised her left hand and brought it down with as much force as she could. Beca expected that this would only result in her hand getting hurt. What she did not expect was for her hand to not only shatter the cinder block but to also continue and tear through the table as well. Beca jumped back in shock and spun around to see the Conrads practically beaming at her.

"What the heck just happened?" She asked.

"First off, the nanites are mostly made of carbon meaning that when they are arranged a specific way and work together they can be nearly indestructible," Dr. Conrad explained. "Furthermore the nanites still inside your body are giving your muscles a bit of a boost. They surround your muscle tissue and increase the tensile strength tenfold."

"So I have super strength?" The two doctors nodded their heads and Beca allowed a small grin. "I think I can get used to this."

And she did. Over the next few months the Conrads put Beca through her paces. Her control over the nanites grew rapidly and she barely needed to think before the nanites responded. They also worked on controlling her new super strength and she hardly ever broke anything around the house anymore. Once she had gained control over the nanites Dr. Conrad brought in an old friend to teach Beca self defense. His name was Mr. Onakuramara and he would occasionally bring in his daughter Lilly to train with Beca. The girl always seemed to beat Beca despite her enhancements and despite some creepy comments the two became close friends. With less than a month before school started Beca finally felt like she had full control over her new abilities. Her martial arts skills still needed some work but Lilly had informed them that she would be transferring schools to continue Beca's training.

"All right you guys ready?" Beca turned around and showed everyone the look she had chosen to go with while doing hero work. In short she was a knight in shining purple armor. From head to toe she was decked out in classic knight armor with a hood covering her helmet and intricate etchings worked into the nanobots. Her voice came out sounding deeper and slightly distorted since the nanites were able to mess with her vocal cords to keep anyone from recognizing her. The streamline style of the suit also helped to hide her feminine features as an extra precaution for her identity.

"I like it, it gives off a nice classic vibe." Dr. Conrad said.

"I fought in the renaissance." Lilly whispered that no one heard.

Stacie gave Beca a once over and nodded her head. "I think it looks great Beca. Have you come up with a name yet?"

"I have." The name had been the hardest thing for Beca to come up with. But after several hours she decided to let her dad inspire her. Beca's father had been a comparative literature teacher at the local community college and had been obsessed with the legends of King Arthur and his knights. At the end of those stories Arthur was taken to a secret island to heal from his wounds so he could one day return. Beca thought that she and Arthur had that in common so she decided to name herself after the island that he was taken to.

"Call me Avalon."

All right I know what you're thinking.

"Wait a second superpowers is supposed to be Sunday's prompt not Monday's! Doesn't this person know how a calendar works?"

First off yes I do know how a calendar works. And I was going to write seven individual one-shots but I was having trouble coming up with Ideas for some of them and decided to switch things around to make one coherent story instead. And to do that I needed to move some of the days around.

You're probably also thinking.

"You know for this being a BeChloe week story there is a distinct lack of Chloe. Heck there's more Steca in this than Bechloe."

And you're right there is no Chloe...yet. All I can say is patience my friends, patience. I had to set up Beca's origin and kill her parents since I think it's against superhero law to have two living parents. Seriously name one, I'll wait.
