Joining the a cappella team was a bit of culture shock for Beca. For one thing she was used to having three friends...total...like ever. Now she had at least ten, she still wasn't sure if Aubrey counted. Lunch became rather crowded after auditions. Since Beca, Amy, Lilly, CR and Denise all already sat at the same table the rest of the team joined them and the "loser" table became, in the words of Chloe, the "aca" table. Beca was still trying to get a handle on everyone's names but there was the really tall freshman Emily, someone who was actually shorter than Beca who's name she thinks is Flo. Then there are the two girls whose names Beca can never keep straight, Jessica and Ashley. And of course there's Stacie, Aubrey and Chloe. Beca blames Chloe for the current state of her cherished lunch table since it was the redhead that said, "We're all teammates we should sit together." And before Beca could protest she was sandwiched between Chloe and Fat Amy.
"All right ladies," Aubrey spoke up from the head of the round table, yes the irony was not overlooked. "We've been doing really well in rehearsals and I'm proud of all of you for the effort. I think with this team we'll be able to finally win nationals." Beca rolled her eyes as Aubrey sat down between Stacie and Jesse. If you asked Beca, Aubrey took this competition way too seriously, it wasn't healthy for the blonde and Beca was worried she would pop a blood vessel. The captain was also apparently completely oblivious to the tug-a-war happening between Stacie and Jesse. Ever since the Bellas started sharing a table Jesse had forgotten all about Beca and had started pinning after Aubrey, much to Stacie's annoyance. Beca was torn about this new development, on one hand she was glad that Jesse wasn't bothering her anymore but on the other she was rooting for Stacie to get the girl. Another interesting development was that Benji had managed to put down the magic tricks long enough to ask Emily out, to which the tall girl had barely managed to respond. Beca thought the two made a cute pair since they were both awkward nerds.
"Am I the only one who's worried about those three?" Chloe leaned in to whisper in Beca's ear and Beca tried desperately to ignore the wave of goosebumps she felt cover her skin.
"You may be the only one that's worried but you're definitely not the only one who has noticed," Beca whispered back. "I'm pretty sure I just saw CR and Amy exchange some cash, I think they're betting on who gets the captain first." Chloe looked around and sure enough everyone was watching the three seniors at the end of the table.
Chloe turned back to Beca. "You've known them longer, who do you think has a higher chance?"
Beca looked up from her food to study the three in question. Jesse appeared to be trying to share one of his juice boxes but Stacie had managed to to worm her arm through Aubrey's. And Aubrey looked confused by the entire situation. Beca felt a pang of sympathy for the blond since she also had trouble recognizing social cues. "Given that Jesse has tried, unsuccessfully, to get me to date him for the past two years I would put my money on Stacie."
Chloe's eyes widened. "Jesse tried to ask you out." Beca raised an eyebrow, was that jealousy or just curiosity?
"Uh ya, he never succeeded though. He kind of has the wrong parts." Beca cringed at her own words, she probably could have phrased that better. Chloe however looked relieved and Beca couldn't understand why and before she could figure it out the bell rang and everyone got up to head to their next period. And since it was Friday that meant gym class.
Stacie, Beca and Amy headed one way while everyone else went to their respective classes. When the girls reached the gym they headed to the locker rooms to get changed.
"I swear if that movie dork interferes with Aubrey I'm going to have Lilly do something." Stacie grumbled as she took off her shirt and replaced it with her gym counterpart.
Beca gave her a worried look, "What exactly are you going to get Lilly to do?"
Stacie shrugged, "I don't know, something. She's a creative girl I'm sure she'll figure it out."
"Um Stace I know you don't like Jesse going after your girl but I don't think having Lilly scar him for life is the correct answer."
Stacie just huffed and left the locker room with Beca hurrying to catch up. They stopped when they saw that the guys were laying out the mats. The two girls gave each other confused looks turned to Amy who just shrugged and went to sit on the bleachers.
"Hello everyone, today we are going to participate in an experimental self defense course that the education board wants to try out." Mr. Hopkins, the gym teacher, announced. "I'm going to need you to work in pairs and before you start moving I've already assigned them." Groans could be heard all around the gym. "Ya ya I know your lives are terrible. Now quite belly aching and get with your partner when I call out your name. Mitchell and Henderson." Beca felt her blood pressure spike as she saw Tom grin maliciously at her.
"Remember Beca you're supposed to be a weak girly girl like the rest of us," Stacie chimed in. "So please don't throw him through a wall or something."
"I make no promises," Beca muttered under her breath as she moved to join her long-time bully on one of the mats. She stood there as Mr. Hopkins called out the other pairings and explained some defense techniques. Beca tuned him out after about the first minute since anything that a high school class could teach her would be dwarfed by the training sessions she had with Lilly. Once the teacher was done with his spiel Beca turned to face the very smug looking Tom.
"Oh I think I'm going to enjoy this."
"Strange, I didn't peg you for the type that likes getting his balls crushed." Beca said as she took a seemingly uninterested stance. Tom let out a huff and charged at Beca hoping to catch her off guard. Beca simply pivoted and stuck a leg out to send him flying across the mat. She bent down and smiled, "Huh maybe you should pick on someone your own size, you might have better luck."
Tom let out a curse and scrambled to get back on his feet. Beca merely stood back and waited. Tom tried to go in for a grapple but Beca sidestepped and smacked him on the back of the head. She could tell that Tom was getting angrier by the second since as the fight went on his attacks grew more and more wild. Beca managed to easily evade everything Tom threw at her and once again made him fall flat on his face. "Hey teach, don't suppose I could get a different partner, Tom seems a little winded."
Tom let out a growl and managed to Beca from behind. He thought he finally had her but then he was soaring across and over the mat to land on the hard wooden floor with a satisfying thud. He let out a groan and stayed where he was as Beca just dusted off her hands and went to sit on the bleachers. Everyone in the gym was looking at her with shocked expressions, everyone except Stacie who had an exasperated look on her face. Beca just smirked and leaned back, this had been the first time she had enjoyed gym class in a long time.
After the gym incident Tom never bothered her again and Beca had developed a bit of street cred. No one seemed to pick on her anymore and she could actually enjoy going to school again. Her friends made comments about how she seemed more confident and even Aubrey had given her an impressed look the next day at practice.
Now Beca was sitting on the activity bus going to her first a cappella competition. Mrs. Howard was humming to herself in the driver's seat and Beca was working on some math homework that she had brought along. Chloe was leaning against her with her head on Beca's shoulder. Beca couldn't tell if the redhead was actually asleep or not but she wasn't about to wake her up if she was. She looked up from her book and saw that Stacie and Aubrey were in a similar position. Stacie caught her eye and smiled at Beca, Beca just rolled her eyes and returned to her book.
"If you move x to the other side of the equation it will be a lot easier to solve." Chloe's voice caused Beca to jump a little in her seat. She looked at the problem she was working on and then went back to the redhead. Beca shook her head and made the correction before addressing Chloe.
"Thank you, but I thought you were asleep." Chloe looked at her with a sleepy smile.
"I was but your pencil tapping woke me up.''
"Oh," Beca said sheepishly. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to disturb you."
"It's fine," Chloe yawned." Besides, it looks like we're here."
Mrs. Howard parked the bus in front of the hotel before standing up. "All right girls you'll be paired up for rooms so pay attention. Aubrey and Chloe, Beca and Stacie, Flo and Lilly, Jessica and Ashley, CR and Amy, don't give that look CR I'd never get away with putting you and Denise in the same room, and finally Emily and Denise. Let's get a move on ladies."
"Um, Mrs. Howard," Stacie called out before the teacher could get off the bus. "Would it be all right if Chloe and I switched rooms. That way Aubrey and I can discuss strategy."
'Yeah, that's what you'll be discussing." Beca shot Stacie a knowing look but then her brain processed that that meant she and Chloe would be sharing a room.
Mrs. Howard gave Stacie a dubious look but Stacie was giving an award worthy act of innocence and Aubrey looked none the wiser so the teacher just shrugged. "Chloe, you okay with switching?"
"Oh, totes. besides Aubrey snores so this works for me." Chloe slung her arm around Beca's shoulders and pulled her in for a side hug.
"I do not snore!" Out of everything of course that's what Aubrey would focus on.
"It's alright Bree I think it's cute." Stacie said which caused Aubrey to blush. Mrs. Howard narrowed her eyes at Stacie but eventually shrugged it off and proceeded to get off the bus. The girls all got signed in and made their way to their assigned rooms. Stacie shot Beca a wink before disappearing with Aubrey. Beca just laughed and shook her head and she opened the door to her's and Chloe's room. The pair walked in and saw that instead of the double room that they were supposed to have there was only one bed.
"Oh um, do we have the wrong room or something?" Beca asked.
Chloe looked at the door and shook her head. "This is the room they told us at the front desk."
"Uh, do you think we should go back?"
"Don't be silly Beca we can still share this room. Besides, it's late and I'm tired so let's just use this one." Chloe didn't give Beca a chance to argue as she moved into the room and immediately moved to the bathroom to take a shower. Beca just stood in the hallway looking around nervously, she was sure how she was feeling about sharing a bed with Chloe. On the one hand she was nervous about screwing something up and having Chloe think she was a freak. But there was a small part of her that was perfectly okay with sharing a bed. So while Chloe was in the shower Beca changed and brushed her teeth and by the time she was done Chloe had finished. Beca's breath hitched a little when she saw Chloe come out of the bathroom wearing a pair of really short sleep shorts and a baggy t-shirt.
"Just so you're aware, I'm a cuddler." Chloe said as she tossed the towel she had been using to dry her hair back into the bathroom.
"It's fine Chloe we don't have to share the bed, I can sleep on the floor." Beca said in a last ditch effort.
Chloe stuck her bottom lip out in a pout and in a faux sad tone asked, "Don't you want to sleep with me?"
"Uh..Yes..no...I don't know, maybe." In her defense Beca has never claimed to be a Casanova.
Chloe dropped the pout and grinned at her. "Beca It's fine I don't bite...unless you want me to." Beca froze and she could feel her mouth hanging open and Chloe just laughed. "Geeze, just get in the bed, you're too easy Mitchell." Beca out a huff before cautiously climbing in with Chloe. "If you really think that sleeping on the edge of the bed will let you escape my cuddling then you're in for a rude awakening. Get your cute butt over here Beca."
Beca begrudgingly scooted closer to Chloe and the redhead draped an arm around Beca's waist. Beca was trying to ignore the whole cute butt statement but Chloe was busy pressing herself as close to Beca as she possibly could. They shifted around each other until they were both in a comfortable position. Beca had nearly fallen asleep when Chloe spoke again.
"Can I ask you a question?"
"You just did Beale."
Chloe poked Beca in the side but continued anyway. "Why did you suddenly drop off the face of the earth after the first day of school?"
Beca sighed and rolled over so that she could face Chloe. "I saw you with Tom and I don't know I couldn't really process it." It wasn't the whole truth but Beca couldn't exactly say that she was distancing herself to protect Chloe. A plan that, given the current circumstances, had completely backfired. But then again it may have been unnecessary since that Maelstrom guy hadn't shown his face again.
"Beca Tom and I were never a thing. He tried asking me out but I kept telling him no, he wasn't the one I was interested in." The last part was barely a whisper and Beca almost didn't catch it. Her heart soared when Chloe said she didn't like Tom but then it plummeted when she mentioned someone else.
"Oh uh really? If you don't mind me asking who's the person you're interested in?" Beca asked, not really sure if she wanted to know the answer.
"You." Chloe was looking her straight in the eye and Beca couldn't really process what was going on. Before she could say anything Chloe leaned forward and pressed her lips against Beca's. When Beca didn't respond immediately Chloe pulled back but Beca just chased and pulled Chloe into a deeper kiss. They continued to kiss until their lungs begged for oxygen. When they pulled apart Chloe took in a shaky breath and then started coughing up a storm.
"Oh my gosh Chloe are you okay? I'm so sorry did I hurt you?" Once Chloe was done coughing she smiled at Beca's concern and just shook her head.
"No you didn't do anything Beca. Other than give me the best kiss I've ever had." Chloe stopped to cough again and when she saw Beca's concerned face she decided to come clean. "I have nodes."
Beca looked at her in confusion. "What the heck are nodes?"
"Vocal nodules, the rubbing together of your vocal cords without proper lubrication can cause these little cyst-like things to form on your windpipe." Chloe said as she rubbed her neck with her hand.
Beca had noticed Chloe do that several times during practice and hated herself for never questioning it. "Doesn't that hurt? Why would you continue singing?"
"Because I love to sing, it's the only thing I'm good at so I can't give it up. And the Bellas needed me, I told you I lost all my friends when I moved here and I really don't want to let my new friends down." Chloe glanced down and played with Beca's fingers.
"Oh Chloe, singing's not the only thing you're good at." Chloe rolled her eyes but Beca grabbed her chin and made Chloe look her in the eye. "Chloe you are so smart, how many times have you helped me with my homework over the past month. You can dance like no other, and I should know because it's been kind of hard to keep my eyes off you in practice," Beca blushed. "Not that I've been creeping on you or anything, it's just kind of hard not to notice."
Chloe giggled and damn it if Beca didn't think it was the cutest thing she's ever heard. "It's alright Beca, I'm pretty confident about all this." She said as she made a sweeping motion down her body.
Beca smirked. "You should be." She pulled Chloe in for another kiss. "And you want to know what I like most about you?" Chloe smiled and nodded. "You are so kind. Every time you enter a room the whole world seems brighter. You Chloe Beale are probably the best person I have ever met and if there were more people like you then the world would be a much better place."
Beca cupped Chloe's cheek and whipped a stray tear with her thumb. Chloe let out a watery laugh before pulling Beca in for one more kiss and then snuggling into the brunet. "Thank you Beca."
Beca went to respond but she could feel the steady breathing coming from Chloe signifying that she was asleep. Instead Beca laid her hand on Chloe's exposed neck and began to focus.
"I hope this works."
