"Hey, so…can I ask something?"

Megan set the last stack of collected papers on Melissa's desk before looking up at her. Curly strands of black hair dangled in front of her face; their ends held in place by her beanie.

Melissa, who was back to looking a bit more presentable stared into Megan's eyes, drawing out the moment to borderline awkwardness. "Do you…like Trevor?"

Another pause drawn out. Megan stood up, and pondered the thought while Melissa awaited an answer.

"I know it's none of my business, but what with how you two interact, it's no secret that he likes you to some extent."

"I mean…" Megan was finding it difficult to answer. "It's not like I don't but…"

"He's like a brother?"

"To be honest, it's kind of complicated," She gave up trying to be tactful. "You see, Adam and I are sandbox buddies. We've known each other our whole lives, and it was after Adam was done with his Beta Test here that I met Trevor. He was…difficult, to get to know."

"I could see that." Melissa said, thinking back to the intelligent ten-year-old.

"Yeah, so we used to fight a lot when we were kids. As we grew up, we found ways to get along, specifically when I got into Digimon myself. Trevor was the one who offered to teach me and from there we began becoming closer as friends up till now."

"And the teasing comes from what?"

"Well, as it turns out, Trevor and I got to spend so much time together that he accidentally let it slip one day that he dreamt of us being a married couple of Pro Tamers, traveling the world and stuff. It sounded so farfetched and funny that it's been a running joke. After like 3 or 4 years of it, it still works so, why not mess with him?"

Melissa tilted her head with a small smile. "That's cute. So that means you do like him, hm?"

Again, Megan didn't answer right away, "I'd be lying if I said it didn't cross my mind. It's just that my father always taught me to look at things from a long-term perspective. I have my own goals and Trevor has his. I wouldn't want something like a relationship to get in the way of that. Maybe in the future if the stars align or something, but…not right this second. For now, I'm content for having the both of them in my life and that not changing anytime soon."

"You don't think you're giving him false hope and leading him on though?"

"I mean…I don't know. Sometimes I think I am but…he's just always been like that. Quick to volunteer, quick to care for someone. His empathy is admirable, so sometimes I don't know if he's quick to help because of feelings or…if that's how he is. Part of me doesn't want to know."

"Well, from one girl to another, if you have your eye on someone, don't sit on it. They're not gonna wait until you're ready for a relationship."

Megan nodded, "True, but there's another reason why I haven't gone farther too."

Melissa thought about it, "Parents?"

"Dad, to be specific."

"Ok, enough said." Melissa was able to understand what that meant, causing Megan to laugh about it.

Adam re-entered the room, causing the two girls to cut their conversation short.

"Any luck?" Melissa returned to her anxious demeanor, to continue to divert the atmosphere.

Adam shook his head. "Nothing. But, while at the R&D Department, they did show me something cool that you guys gotta see!" Adam took his deck case from the side and pressed the button on the side of it. "Guys, meet Agumon!"

The small orange dinosaur materialized on the face of the deck case, standing up from its fetal position and opening its eyes for the first time. It blinked, moving around a bit, and looking at the three humans in the room.

"Agumon?" Adam spoke to it.

Agumon turned around to look up at Adam, "A…dam…right?"

The boy shook his head furiously, "Yeah! You remember me, right? From five years ago during the Beta Test?"

Agumon took a moment to process before looking up. "I do."

"I made sure to recover that specific Agumon's data for the test, to make the deck I made for you extra special." Melissa explained. "When I told R&D who I was making the deck for, they all chipped in and tried to make it fit the personality of that hyper-active kid way back when. They wanted your return to be meaningful."

"You guys really did all that?" Adam said, feeling flattered beyond words.

"You and Trevor apparently gave the department the best data as compared to the other candidates. Where Trevor excelled in the brains, you excelled in the heart of it."

Adam paused, thinking back to that day when he first met Trevor, and the things he said during the match when Trevor kept pushing him further and further into a corner. How he reacted when he learned about Blockers, and how he told them that Coredramon wanted to protect Greymon and Birdramon as much as he did.

"R&D's focus that day was to not only study how younger kids would handle to mechanics of the game, but they were also hoping the kids could see themselves as real Digimon Tamers. They wanted them to immerse themselves in the role-playing aspect of it. Kids are more likely going to experience that compared to teens and adults who play the game. You set the bar that day and gave them plenty to work with to make it as kid friendly and as welcoming as it's become."

Adam was still kind of taken aback, not realizing how much an impact he had on the game. He looked down at Agumon who continued to look around the room.

"Hey, Agumon." Megan waved, drawing it's attention. "My name's Megan, nice to meet you."

Agumon eyed her and tilted his head.

Megan got an idea and told him to hold on. She unhooked her case, revealing the watermelon-colored case and holding it out to him. From it, a Digimon materialized, A bipedal mandrake Digimon, lime green in appearance with large black eyes and a bright pink flower sprouting from her head.

"This is Palmon, my Partner."

Palmon curtsied before her fellow Digimon.

Both Adam and Agumon stood slightly lost, but that's when Megan took Adam's hand and pressed her case on the end of his, connecting them like a bridge between the two. Agumon and Palmon both responded to the connection, moving towards one another, like two pets examining the other.

"Our decks have this feature, letting our partners interact with one another, you know, like those old virtual pet toys our parents had when they were kids."

"Yeah, I get it," Adam said, watching the two miniature holograms begin to happily interact with one another. "Looks like you made a friend bud."

Agumon ignored Adam as it and Palmon continued to jump back and forth with each other in enthusiastic manners.

"Also, with that, your D-Case's info is saved into mine." Megan pulled away from him.

"My info?" Adam repeated.

"The D-Cases act as much more than regular cases. They have similar functionality as cellphones, being able to communicate with players you have saved into it. And when its released, it'll have functions with SAIBA's newest project, Babylon."

"Babylon?" Adam repeated again.

"Trevor didn't mention it to you?" Megan said setting her case back on her, "SAIBA's social hub to take the game online. It's supposed to be a whole virtual reality thing where Tamers can meet and challenge each other with life-sized Digimon."

"Wait!" Adam exclaimed, "Is she talking about that 'digital world' thing you mentioned to us years back? That's actually going to be a thing?!"

Melissa, surprised by his excitement, nodded. "Every day we've come closer and closer. Trevor's been volunteering to help out testing some patches with R&D and after we run a few more test it should be able to go live in a few weeks. Babylon City will be the first step and over time we're gonna expand on it until we have our own full-fledged world for players around the world. Exciting, isn't it?"

"That's an understatement if there ever was one." Adam said, imagining what that would be like.

The door to the office opened, revealing Trevor on the other side of it. The conversation from earlier suddenly struck Megan, so she quickly spoke up to dismiss the thought, "Any luck? You were gone for a while."

Trevor closed the door, turning back to them afterward. "Yeah, turns out someone picked them up in the lobby. Had to battle them to get it back."

"Seriously? Wonder who the poor sap was who had to put up with you for 30 minutes." Adam joked.

"No one you need to concern yourself with."

"Why not? Was she that cute?"

Trevor staggered, "How did you know she was a girl?"

Megan's heart took a hard thump in her chest, catching her off guard. She kept her composure, hoping no one noticed.

"Because you just told me, genius!" Adam grinned.

Trevor caught himself. "It's not like that!"

"Shut up Adam," she thought silently.

"If it isn't why you getting so defensive?" Adam continued to tease.

"I'm not defensive you doofus!" Trevor snapped.

"Please shut up!" Megan's inner voice grew louder.

"You're getting worse!"

"I said shut up!"

Megan continued to put up a front, while her inner voice proceeded to have a meltdown. She was so distracted she didn't notice Melissa looking at her from the corner of her eye.

"Megan, Mom said dinner's ready!" Tyler, Megan's little brother knocked.

"I'm not hungry…" She answered back through her bedroom door.

Tiana, Tyler's identical twin bounced her way to the door to join her brother. "Mom said to come down because she's not cooking again."

"I don't care!" She reiterated.

Tyler and Tiana looked at each other, and like the mischievous twins that they were, they twisted the doorknob and attempted to creep into their sister's room. Immediately, the door shut right back as a pillow careened back at them.

Megan could hear the twins screaming for help and could only imagine the fury of her mother coming in her direction. She was not in the mood for anyone tonight and all she wanted to do was just be alone in her thoughts.

Her gaze was locked on the picture on her nightstand, a younger her, riding on the back of an older black man dressed in a firefighter's uniform. The thought of the anniversary coming up hung in her head and the conversation earlier did little to help her mentally.

She closed her eyes, allowing tears to flow as she finally decided to give herself a break for a moment…

Chapter 3: Rose Buds

Megan headed to Mr. Morris' class hoping that the events from yesterday didn't carry on going forward. She woke up late for school, which, while unusual for her, worked out in her favor when it came to meeting up with Adam and Trevor, as it gave her a chance to avoid them for a bit. They didn't have Morris the same time she did, so she had breathing room to formulate a plan for when she would inevitably see them.

As soon as she walked in, she saw her teacher, Mr. Morris talking with a new girl she's never seen before. Braided, blonde hair and glasses, the girl sported a yellow cardigan with a navy and white-striped shirt and jeans. She was going to think nothing of it, but as she went to take her seat, she noticed the small keychain hanging on her bag. It was a little figure, silver and cyan-colored with its hands being two long cyan-colored blades, with the wings on the back also resembling swords. Megan's keen eye recognized it as SlashAngemon, a Digimon card.

Not only that, but a thought crossed her mind as well, as if this were the mysterious girl that Trevor met the day before. But she ignored it. It wasn't any of her business whether they were the same person or not and she needed to leave well-enough alone. If anything, she should be glad there's another female Tamer at school. Digimon is good for connecting people with similar interests after all.

"Okay class, before we get started," Mr. Morris rose from his seat, the older gentleman taking control of his classroom the only way an experienced teacher could. "We have a new student joining us. Her name is Emily Parker, she just transferred from Riverbed Academy and today's her first day here at Norbert High. I expect you all to give her a warm welcome as she joins our class, and our school as one of your fellow students."

The class was more or less silent, whispers going in between one another that Megan loosely picked up on. Some were mentions about her appearance, how timid she seemed, while others pointed out she looked stuck up, as all Riverbed students tend to be.

Taking the initiative, Megan raised her hand. "Mr. Morris, there's a free seat next to me. She could sit here."

Megan heard the "teacher's pet" comment from the back of the room. Normally it didn't faze her but given her distracted persona today, she felt the small bite.

"By all means, thanks for offering." Mr. Morris agreed. "Right then, Emily, where Ms. Jones is sitting, that's where you'll be."

"Okay," she said in a soft tone. She silently made her way to the seat and took it, not hesitating to get a notebook out and prep herself for work.

"Nice to meet you." Megan smiled at her new neighbor.

"Likewise." Emily didn't pry her eyes from her notebook as she flipped to an empty page.

Megan was kind of thrown off by the stoic response, so she attempted again, "My name's Megan."

"I know." Emily said, looking up at Mr. Morris.

Her eye twitched. Maybe the whispers were right. Regardless, she tried once more. "So…I noticed—"

"Can you please stop talking?" Emily silently snapped.

Megan caught herself and obediently backed off. "Right…sorry."

As a result, Megan spent the rest of the period lost in her thoughts, her mental voices drowning out Morris' lecture and having her miss opportunities to answer questions she can make in her sleep. Every so often Morris would call on her, but her distractions kept her from following along, getting more students in the room to whisper, their voices seemingly louder than usual.

When the bell finally rung, Megan quickly shot up and was eager to get to her next class. As she went to collect her stuff, Emily suddenly spoke up.

"Megan, right?" She asked curiously.

Megan looked up, "Yeah?"

Emily took a moment to stare at Megan before she spoke, "Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm not interested in being friends."

Megan was thrown off once more. "Excuse me?"

"It's exactly what I said. I appreciate the offer for the seat, but that's as far as we're going. We're classmates, nothing more than that."

"…Okay?" Megan said, trying to process things.

"Good." Emily said, collecting her stuff. "Glad we understand one another."

Emily stood up from her seat and made her way out of the classroom, the SlashAngemon keychain dangling with each step, staring back at the confused girl who began to scream internally once more.

"So, you got friendzoned…" Trevor deduced.

"Did I? I think I just got zoned period." Megan said, still dumbfounded. She groaned and dug her face into her arms.

Joining her two friends at lunch, Megan's mind was too worn out to stress her previous issues homing in on focusing strictly on the problem at hand.

"Is it really that bad that she doesn't want to be friends?" Adam quipped.

"I didn't even care about that! Yeah, I admit maybe I shouldn't've tried talking to her during class, but what she said afterward was just rude!"

"Introverts be like that sometimes." Adam noted. "Not everyone wants to be friends. Just accept that."

"I still deserve an apology…" Megan continued to sulk.

"True, but still you brought that upon yourself." Trevor responded.

"I know that, shut up." Megan snapped.

"Just saying, sometimes you have to realize your actions affect people differently from what you expect."

Megan sat up. "What's that supposed to mean?"

Trevor looked at her, "What?"

"What you just said."

"That…what you see as harmless could impact people negatively?"

Megan narrowed her gaze at him.

"Are…you mad?"

"What gave it away?" she asked.

"I…" Trevor looked over to Adam.

Adam took the cue and cleared his throat. "Hey, Meg, how about we play a match or 2? We have time before the bell—"

"What an idiot…" A voice chimed in from the neighboring table.

The three were prompted to look back, realizing they were loud enough for the students behind them to mock them. Megan recognized them as some of her classmates.

"Can you guys mind your business over there?" Megan snapped, carrying her budding anger in their direction.

One of the students leaned over, "Sorry, just thought you needed help telling your boyfriend how much of an idiot he's being."

Trevor's face flushed. "I'm not—!"

"First off, He's not my boyfriend!" Megan countered harshly, "secondly, you're not even cute yourself so don't push your luck!"

The student was caught off guard by her statement and was knocked back into it by his friends who fell out hysterical. Angered by his embarrassment he shot up from his chair. "You have some nerve you little—!" The student got quiet as a shadow came over Megan.

Megan and the two boys turned, seeing Tyrone and his crew approach the two feuding sides. Ignoring Megan and the others, Tyrone went straight to the antagonizing student who shrunk back in his seat.

"Are they causing you problems?" One of Tyrone's friends asked the trio.

Before they could answer, Tyrone was already leaning in on the kid.

"You got a problem with them; you answer to me." Tyrone growled. "Them? off limits!"

"Understood!" The student cowardly obeyed T-Rex's command.

And he leaned up. "And that goes for anyone else!" His booming voice silenced the whole room, making the three, initially relieved teens feel the limelight beamed on top of them. "Anyone messes with Trevor and his friend's; I don't care who! You're dealing with me! They have my respect! And anyone who has my respect, has my backing! I dare one of ya to try me!"

The room stood quiet, even the teachers were waiting for the ample opportunity to approach Tyrone and address what was happening, even though whatever could've happened, was probably settled thanks to him.

Tyrone turned his attention to the trio who were floored by the brief spectacle, as order returned to the cafeteria.

"Um…thanks? I guess?" Megan spoke for the three.

"Don't mention it. I'm sorry for the other day." Tyrone apologized.

Adam was ready to call him out, but Trevor spoke up. "It's cool, man. Everything worked out in the end."

"Good, good…" Tyrone put his hands on his hips as he processed that. "Uh, listen I—uh…I wanted to ask you guys if…"

"You wanna play against us sometime, don't you?" Trevor deduced.

"I mean…if you guys wouldn't mind sometime? You got some of my friends curious and I know I'm not that great of a player so…"

The three looked at each other. Trevor, being the expert of the three, spoke up. "I mean if we're free, I don't see why not?"

Tyrone exhaled and grinned, the weight being pulled off him. "I really appreciate it you guys. I didn't think you'd say yes."

"We didn't think the last minute was gonna happen either and so here we are." Megan responded.

Tyrone's grinned shaped itself in a goofy position as he shied away from Megan. Trevor and Adam in the back of their minds started to see the ulterior motive behind his request at that moment.

Tyrone straightened up and cleared his throat. "Anyway, I'll see you guys around." And with that he took his leave, his friends following him back to their original seats across the cafeteria.

"Well then…that was a thing." Trevor commented.

"Well, at least if Tyrone hangs out with us you two can double date." Adam added on.

Megan groaned, giving up her struggle at this point. "I seriously can't be the only girl in my friend group. I need to make some female friends ASA—! That's it."

"What?" Adam said, sliding away from her.

"Nothing, just had an idea."

"You're gonna ask that girl again to be friends with you?" Trevor quickly figured out.

"Nope," she took her deck case and flashed it, "I'm gonna beat her into it."

With the end of the day upon them, students scheduled to leave were in the hallways fishing out their lockers of their belongings, eager to be set free from the confines of Norbert High School. Emily in particular, found herself stuck on the 3rd floor, reading the map of the school in an attempt to find her way back to her locker, which had her up and down the hallways for a minute. Her old school didn't use lockers, so it was going to take her a minute to get her used to navigating the school.

"Need help finding your locker?" a familiar voice crept over her shoulder. She turned around, seeing her seat neighbor inches from her.

"Uh…"

"Let me see?" without warning, Megan snatched the program and directory from her. "Wait, 'B-206?'"

"What about it?" Emily asked rather defensively.

Megan scoffed and smiled, "My locker is 207; right across from yours."

"…of course, it is…" She muttered.

Megan felt that. "Okay, look, I'm sorry for being a bit pushy this morning. I could've waited after class to maybe introduce myself. I know what it feels like to be the new kid at school, so I try to make it a habit to be helpful for newer students here."

Emily slowly nodded, clearly weary of Megan. "…you said your locker's next to mine, right?"

"Right; right, sorry. Yeah, follow me." Megan said, leading the way.

Emily followed Megan as they came down one floor below and down a hallway which had another row of lockers and more students collecting their belongings.

"The first 3 floors of the building have the lockers. Each of them is separated by a letter, followed by a number," Megan explained. "Higher the grade, the closer to the lobby you are. Seniors get the A lockers on the first floor, Juniors and Sophomores the B lockers and Freshman are stuck on the floor you were on with the C lockers."

"That make sense. Riverbank Academy did away with lockers years ago, so to think some schools still use them."

"My dad graduated from Riverbank years ago." Megan mentioned. "Before, you know, it became a rich private school."

"That's cool." Emily said passively.

"And here we are…" Megan approached her locker. "Mine is right over here," she pointed across. "Cool that we're locker buddies, right?"

Emily didn't respond, turning to open her locker and leaving Megan feeling more awkward.

"Hm, maybe the others were right after all. Riverbank kids are stuck up." Megan said out loud.

"At least we're not attention cravers." Emily responded.

"I was trying to be nice to you because you were new here!" Megan snapped, flipping around from her locker.

"Well, I never asked you to begin with." Emily calmly countered, continuing to focus on collecting her things.

"It's called doing the right thing."

"It's called being needy. Let me guess, you had a falling out with someone or are you looking for a distraction?"

Megan was taken aback. "Excuse you?"

Emily closed her locker and turned around. "Okay, let me rephrase: are you really trying to help out your fellow student, or are you trying to befriend me because you need a therapist?'"

Megan slammed her locker shut. "Okay, listen here you Riverbank reject, I have half a mind to—!"

"Whoa whoa whoa!" Adam exclaimed as he and Trevor got in between the two girls as if on cue.

"We can hear you two across the hall what happened?" Trevor asked Megan.

Megan bit her lip, realizing that things were getting more complicated than they should be. "It's nothing…"

"Sounds more like nothing," Adam noted.

"She's your friend?" Emily crossed her arms.

"Yeah…? Why?"

"Tell her to leave me alone. I'm not in the market for friends and she needs to understand that."

"Consider it done." Trevor turned around to say. He paused for a second, getting a glimpse of the girl. "Emily Parker?"

Trevor's recognition of the girl lit a flame inside Megan. "You know her?!" She snapped at him.

Trevor spun back around to her, showing visible annoyance. "Okay, can you just chill for like five seconds? Yes, I know her, she's a Beta Tester for SAIBA too."

"Whoa she is?" Adam said surprised.

"Was a Beta Tester." She shoved Adam away from her. "I didn't last long because my parents pulled me out of the program not long after I started."

"That explains the keychain then, doesn't it?" Megan mentioned.

Emily looked along the side of her bag, making note of it. "It was a gift from an old friend of mine that I managed to hold onto. Completely unrelated."

"So then…does that mean you're a Tamer then?" Adam asked.

Emily sighed, realizing how persistent they were. She dropped her bag and opened it, revealing to the three the deck case she kept hidden; a bright yellow and cyan colored case, matching the same shades as the colors of her keychain. "I'm assuming you all are too."

"They are. Her included." Trevor motioned to Megan.

Emily studied each of them before speaking, "Alright then, how about this? I'll battle her. If I win, you all leave me alone, no exceptions. If she wins—"

"I get an apology." Megan interjected. "Screw being friendly at this point. Win or lose I'll leave you alone going forward. But I'm getting apology out of you one way or another."

Emily nodded. "Fair enough."

Adam looked at each side and feeling the intense atmosphere, motioned to the exit. "TCG Towers then…?"

TCG Towers is a chain of social café's scattered throughout North America, starting up from one man's dream of creating a place for people to enjoy life and have fun. The first, and biggest shop is in the heart of NYC and is a major tourist attraction for anyone going to visit. Cisco City, while smaller demographically by comparison, is one of the few cities that has a TCG Towers and arguably garners the same amount of traffic, being a main social hub for gamers of all kinds. Regarding products provided, the shop tends to put more emphasis on more popular trends, especially if the main HQ exists within the city via contracts. Where NYC has the Duel Clash Association for their Duel Masters IP, and their TCG Towers supports the company and their merchandise and equipment, Cisco City's TCG Towers does the same with SAIBA's Digimon TCG IP.

The quartet of teens all entered the building and took no time at all to find a free DigiTerminal for them to use. Megan and Emily each took a site while Trevor stood on the side to act as judge. Adam watched as a spectator, never seeing Megan play before, and curious to see what Emily would be using.

After setting their Digi-Eggs to the side, shuffling their decks, setting their Security, and drawing their hands, the both of them were ready.

"Digi-Gate: Open!" They both exclaimed, activating the terminal, and causing the counter to materialize, the counter split itself between Green and Yellow this time.

"I'll start," Megan said reaching for her Digi-Eggs. "I hatch: Tanemon!"

From the action, a green bulb-like Digimon materialized, with a white face, red eyes and small feet on its front and hind.

Tanemon (BT1-007)

Color: Green

Level: 2

"Next, Digivolve into Tentomon!" Megan retrieved the card from her hand and set it over Tanemon.

Binary code encircled Tanemon, transforming it into a bipedal, ladybug-like Digimon with four arms and grey talons on the front pair. It had large green eyes and yellow ribbon-like antennae, as well as its outer shell being somewhat spiky.

Tentomon (BT1-066)

Color: Green

Level: 3

DP: 2000

Megan drew. "Lastly, I'll play Palmon, for 3 Memory. When she comes into play, I reveal the top 3 cards of my deck, and if there's a Level 4 Digimon amongst them I can add it to my hand, while the rest of my cards are added to the bottom of my deck."

The familiar mandrake Digimon materialized in Megan's Battle Area, and held its arms upward, showing the three rectangles that were to represent the revealed cards.

Palmon (BT1-067)

Color: Green

Level: 3

DP: 1000

Megan flipped the three cards, revealing the 2-cost Tamer Izzy Izumi, the Level 4 Togemon (BT1-074), and the Level 3 Mushroommon (BT1-065)

"I add Togemon to my hand. Izzy and Mushroommon are sent to the bottom of my deck. Megan said, setting the cards on the side face-down and putting her deck over them. Togemon was added to her hand.

"What does Green do again?" Adam asked curiously.

"Didn't you say you watch my matches?" Trevor reminded.

"Yeah, but I haven't played the game in a while so some details slip my mind." Adam defended.

"Okay then, well Green specializes in scaling up to your Level 6's as fast as possible, while also suspending your opponent's Digimon. It's similar to Red in regard to being aggressive, but Green tends to put more of an emphasis on beating down Digimon rather than Security."

"So, in other words, keep your opponent's numbers low while you build yourself up for one massive assault."

"Exactly."

Emily drew next, flipping a card in her Breeding Area. "I hatch Cupimon."

On Emily's side, a small white marshmallow-like angel Digimon with peach-colored wings materialized in the breeding area.

Cupimon (BT1-006)

Color: Yellow

Level: 2

"Cupimon Digivolves into Tinkermon." Emily set the card on top of the Digimon, it now taking the form of a blonde-haired pixie Digimon dressed in a green crop-top, short-shorts and brown, spiked boots, armed with a red, spiked lance.

Tinkermon (BT1-047)

Color: Yellow

Level: 3

DP: 3000

Emily drew. "Lastly, I'll play Seasarmon from my hand for 4 Memory."

In the Battle Area, a white lion-like Digimon with a spiked, gold mane and multiple tails materialized and roared to announce its appearance.

Megan drew. "Tentomon moves to the Battle Area, and for 1 Memory, it'll Digivolve into Kabuterimon!"

The small ladybug Digimon, thanks to the binary code surrounding it, morphed into a larger, blue, bipedal rhinoceros beetle with four skinny limbs a skull-like helmet and four large, thin wings.

Megan drew her card for Digivolving, "Kabuterimon, Security Attack! Tanemon's IE effect boosts him by 1000 DP!"

Kabuterimon: 5000-6000 DP

Kabuterimon crossed its four arms, generating a ball of electricity which it shot towards Emily. A Security card swooped in and took the hit, shattering afterward.

Security: 5-4

"Security Check," Emily responded, flipping the card over. A bird-like humanoid Digimon with music notes surrounding it was revealed.

"Sirenmon, with 6000 DP." Emily stated, causing Megan to snicker.

Kabuterimon: 6000 DP

Sirenmon: 6000 DP

Music notes emerged from the raining remains of the Security card which assaulted Kabuterimon until itself was deleted. Megan was forced to move the card into her Trash in response.

"Unfortunately, like Red, Green tends to go offensively early, which leads to what just happened." Trevor added on.

Megan ignored them pulling a card from her hand, "I'll end by Digivolving Palmon into Togemon."

Binary surrounded Palmon this time, transforming it into a larger Digimon resembling an anthropomorphic cactus with boxing gloves.

She drew once more. "When Digivolving, Togemon reveals the top 3 cards of my deck, allowing me to take one level 5 or higher Digimon from among them and setting the rest to the bottom in any order.

Megan flipped the cards over, revealing the Option Card, Mega Electro Shocker; the Level 6, HerculesKabuterimon; and Level 5, Lillymon."

"I take Lillymon and move the other two to the bottom." Megan said, taking the cards and setting aside Lillymon as she moved the other two.

"You really aren't the type to think things through, are you?" Emily commented as she drew.

"I can say the same about you." Megan countered. "Are you really so anti-social you're only function is to act like a harpy?"

"Better to be a harpy than brat seeking validation."

Trevor and Adam could see the vessels protruding underneath their friend's skin. They looked over to Emily who continued to seem composed, despite the insult received.

"Tinkermon moves to the Battle Area." Emily stated as she shifted the card over. "Then, Tinkermon will Digivolve into Darcmon for 2 Memory."

Binary conde encircled Tinkermon and overtook her, transforming her into a valkyrie-esque Digimon clad in gold armor and red garbs, including a scarf and beret. She twirled the rod in her hand and gripped the blade in her other hand as she posed, ready for battle.

"Most cards do, but I get the impression she's plays more aggressive than a normal Yellow Tamer."

"You're not particularly wrong." Emily looked over to him. My partner Tinkermon and I fight with offense in mind."

"Even though not playing to your strength puts you at a bit of a disadvantage?" Trevor crossed his arms.

"Given who I'm playing against, is it really though?"

Trevor and Adam looked over to Megan who instead of continuing to be annoyed by Emily, took a deep breath. She then drew.

"I hatch Tanemon." She said, flipping the card over. "Togemon Digivolves into Lillymon for 2 Memory."

Togemon was encased in binary code and through it shrunk in size as a result. What emerged was a smaller pink flower-themed fairy Digimon with green and yellow sleeves and boots, leaf-like wings, and vines for hair.

Lillymon flew towards Seasarmon and as the latter furiously attempted to catch the fairy, Lillymon swerved the beast Digimon every chance it got. It joined its hands together, forming a flower-shaped cannon which it fired upon the beast Digimon, deleting it on impact.

As Emily moved the card to the trash, she noticed the counter shift to 4 on her side from the corner of her eye. She looked down, noticing the small Tamer dressed in a red cowgirl-style dress with a wide white cowboy hat that covered her brown, tied hair underneath.

"To end my turn, I play the 4-Cost Tamer, Mimi Tachikawa." Megan told her.

Salamon galloped with its tiny legs and fired a tiny ball of light that broke apart the Security that materialized before it.

In response to its attack, the Security responded by sending a massive lightning bolt down on Salamon, deleting it.

"Mhmm…What are you planning, I wonder?" Megan said, humored that Emily nearly copied her move.

"What are you on about now?" Emily asked.

"Me? Nothing…" Megan said, still humored.

Emily felt slightly irritated by that response. "It's your turn."

"Oh, I know." Megan said. "Mimi sets my Memory to 3 if it's less than 3 at the start of my turn."

"Can I ask something?" Megan spoke as she drew.

"What?" Emily crossed her arms, feeling as though it was best to humor her opponent.

"Why'd you let me show you to your locker?" She digivolved her previously hatched Tanemon into Tentomon and drew.

"What do you mean 'why'?" Emily was confused.

"Just curious," Megan next set Kabuterimon on top of Tentomon.

"What are you curious about?" Emily not understanding where she was going with this.

"Let me rephrase my question." She drew from her digivolution. "You don't have any issues with me, do you?"

Emily scoffed, "I barely know you. If anything, it's because you keep insisting on—"

"Once again, I was only helping one of my fellow students out." Megan corrected. While it was a half-truth, she stuck with this to push her theory further. "You're afraid, aren't you?"

Emily was taken aback. "Afraid of what?"

"Of making friends. Kabuterimon Digivolves into MegaKabuterimon."

MegaKabuterimon formed from Kabuterimon, its wings forming a large shell on its back and the helmet on its head forming into the rest of its body, while the horn changed shape and turned completely red in color.

MegaKabuterimon: 6000-8000 DP

MegaKabuterimon's axe-shaped horn sparked violently as electricity coursed through the insect Digimon. Darcmon braced for impact, crossing its weapons together to endure the oncoming adversary. MegaKabuterimon crashed into Darcmon, carrying it into the air and as much as they tried to resist, sparks encircled it proceeding to electrocute Darcmon until all that was left was smoke and binary.

"I'm right…aren't I?" Megan asked.

Emily didn't say anything. "You're irritating me."

Megan laughed, "You're so cute!"

"Don't patronize me!" Emily snapped. She caught herself, realizing she was growing emotional. Megan on the other hand was humored at how the tables were turned all of the sudden. She demonstrated this, by revealing the card in her hand that would end her turn, "I Digivolve MegaKabuterimon, into HerculesKabuterimon."

The binary code came down on MegaKabuterimon one final time, turning its body bright gold, and opening its large shell to bring out the wings once more. Its horn was replaced by a pair of scissor-like pincers and one over-arching horn in-between.

A blonde-haired, wingless fairy Digimon materialized, his face masked all except for a red eye, he wore a green poncho on his shoulders, with a matching feathered fedora and thigh guards. Strapped to his pants was a sheath carrying a blade roughly his size. Petermon then pulled a flute from its pouch and played it, reviving its partner Tinkermon.

Emily stood quiet, shocked that Megan came to such a conclusion. "I'm…I'm not—"

"Yes, you are." Megan said, "Like I said. My Dad graduated from Riverbank Academy years ago. I was in your position when I was little too. Born in Riverbank, moved to Cisco City when I was barely seven-years-old, anxious about the whole thing, I pushed away everybody who tried to befriend me because I was extremely shy." She turned to Adam, "then one day an annoying brat of a kid bugged me so much that I just gave in. Been friends ever since."

Emily continued to stay silent, drawing her card in the process.

"Keep in mind, you let me show you to your locker. And you were the one to issue the challenge. And before you say anything, I didn't figure it out then, but rather during our match. You play yellow untraditionally because its swarm tactics help protect you from those trying to get to you. "Don't act like any of you know me!" Emily hissed. The once composed girl was steadily growing emotional, as her expressions clearly showed. "I don't need friends and I never did! I've managed just fine on my own so back off already!"

It was only moments after she realized that her voice was so loud throughout that other customers were subtly watching them as they were proving to be a main source of commotion. Once it finally registered, she felt her anxiety bubble and tears well up in her eyes.

"…Maybe we should just call it here." Adam suggested, "before we get kicked out the store."

"As soon as I get my apology." Megan said, drawing her card.

Trevor turned, "Meg, you can't be serious right now."

"Um…we can talk about this afterward." Megan cut her off gently. "Don't worry, I've been told I'm a great therapist so…"

"You're in good hands." Trevor noted. Adam nodded in agreement.

"Thanks guys…" Megan smiled and nodded.

"Now, can we please wrap this up before we get kicked out?" Adam asked her.

"Right." Megan said, gearing up for her comeback. "I hatch Tanemon, then I Digivolve it into Palmon." Megan drew as Palmon materialized in the Breeding Area. "HerculesKabuterimon, attack Darcmon!"

"She's attacking the Digimon? Why not the Security?" Adam questioned.

"You know its cool." She said, her usual mood returned with full vigor. "What can I do for you?"

"Just…is everything okay?"

Megan caught herself. "Wha, do you mean with…?"

"Conversation? With whom? Melissa?"

"Uh…" she was flustered, "Don't worry about that, just stupid girl stuff."

"…right. Well, I mean, you know you'll always have me if you need to talk. And Adam. And Emily now too."

"I know. The three musketeers have now become four. Looking forward to have someone to relate to."

"Yeah, I totally get you. Emily seems really cool too."

"By the way…are you…free Saturday?"

Megan's heart skipped, but she took the chance to tease Trevor while the opportunity presented itself. "Why? Are you finally asking me out?"

Trevor laughed, "You'd like that wouldn't you?"

Megan nearly dropped her phone, not expecting a comeback like that. She was silent for a second, causing Trevor to check to see if she was still on the line, causing her to fumble the phone back up to her ear.

"You okay?"

Trevor busted out laughing on the other side, "Can't stand the heat get out the kitchen."

Trevor was practically choking at this point and Megan was wishing he'd just die on the line. "Serious…seriously are you free though?"

"Why? What's happening Saturday?"

"A closed Beta of Babylon, One final test before the release and Melissa's invited us to join in if we're interested."

Megan got anxious, "You serious?"

"1000% serious! The beta is only for shareholders and donators to SAIBA. But being so involved in the testing as of recent, I've been assigned as a tour guide and Melissa said I could invite you guys if I wanted to. So…you down? This Saturday around 1PM?"
