Chapter 3: She's Having A Baby

Josh was slack-jawed after Donna's proclamation, the band music fading away as his ears buzzed. Sure, he had led her to that realization himself, but somehow, hearing the words come directly out of his wife's mouth made it all the more real. He felt as if a truck had slammed into him.

At least he wasn't hearing sirens.

He swallowed deeply and turned to face his wife, who had an identical expression of shock, horror, and panic on her face.

"I was hoping I might be wrong," Josh admitted as he processed the very thing he had been trying so valiantly to deny in his head. "But if you think so...I mean, you've had four kids, you would know!"

"Yeah, but Josh, it's been ten years!" Donna reminded him. "And it's a little different when you're trying to spot the symptoms of pregnancy in your own daughter!"

Unfortunately, her voice was starting to carry to the other three kids. Matty and Abby locked eyes over Leo, who was listening to the music and blissfully aware of the drama unfolding around him. Matty had a 'No way!' expression on his face, while Abby just looked stunned.

The truth was, she had suspected the same as her parents, but she also knew that if she knew her parents, none of them wanted to be the first to say it out loud and mention it into existence. But now, she knew there was no turning back.

She turned to her parents and said, "Mom, Dad, I know."

Both heads snapped around.

"You know?" Josh repeated blankly. Abby couldn't remember the last time she saw her dad look so upset. Then, his expression changed to one of disbelief. "You know?!"

"Josh, getting upset at Abby's not going to help." She leaned over Josh to her daughter. "Honey, what do you mean, you knew about this?"

"Well, I didn't know know, but I knew something was up. She keeps throwing up in the mornings, and the other day, I realized that I'm the only one who's touched our stash of pads for, like, two months."

"So, she's late?" Donna asked.

"That's what I think. But every time I try to get her alone, she shrugs me off." Abby paused. "I think maybe she knows, too. And she's too afraid to say it out loud because then it might be true and she'll actually have to deal with it."

"Makes sense," Donna said, trailing off as the band finished their show with a rousing finale. They applauded their daughter, who ran off the field with a big grin on her face. Josh and Donna were paying close attention to her, so they didn't miss Ben embracing Anna and kissing her deeply as she came off the field.

"But, wait," Josh said. "No, it doesn't make sense. If she's pregnant, then that means she...she…"

"Slept with him?" Abby finished pointedly.

"Well, yeah."

"But she wouldn't do that!" He turned to Donna. "Would she, honey?"

"I don't know, Josh," Donna answered truthfully. She looked at Anna talking to Ben quietly on the field. She was too far away to read Anna's expression, but suddenly she began to wonder just how much-or little-she knew her daughter.

"I know this much." She said, having reached a decision. "We're not gonna get anywhere by sitting here and speculating. Tonight, once we get home, you and I are gonna sit down with her and get to the bottom of this."

Josh nodded slowly. His gaze drifted to Anna. "Okay."

But as it turned out, they would get an answer to their question before any of the three of them uttered a word.

The car ride home was silent, as everyone was deep in thought. Well, Josh, Donna, and the twins were deep in thought. Matty was thinking about his soccer game the next day, and Leo was reading.

Once they were home, all four kids disappeared upstairs to bed. Josh and Donna sat down in the living room, trying to figure out how they were going to word their conversation. But a round of sobbing from upstairs caused them to alert. Donna reached the stairs first, followed by Josh. They raced up the stairs, and Donna listened for a minute to hear where the crying was coming from.

"Bathroom." She said simply, heading for the twins' bathroom. Just that morning, she had found Anna throwing up. What, she wondered, was she going to find when she opened that door?

They both reached the door at the same time. Donna knocked gently on the door.

"Anna? Are you in there?" She called.

There were another few seconds of crying, then Donna heard, "Yeah."

Donna was ready to ask if they could come in. Josh, however, was more decisive.

"Anna, we're coming in." He said, turning the knob.

"Dad, before you-"

But Josh opened the door, and both practically fell in the room, they were standing so close to it. It took them a few seconds to get their bearings-and to realize what it was that was happening.

Anna was sitting on the rim of the bathtub, her face red and swollen from crying. She stood up shakily. Donna took a step forward, and her eyes fell on the slender object in her hands, recognizing it immediately.

A digital pregnancy test with the unmistakable word "POSITIVE".

Donna felt weak at the knees. She could feel a hand on her shoulder-Josh's hand-steadying her. But she brushed off her own feelings and rushed forward to envelop her daughter.

Anna cried into her shoulder. Donna cradled her head in her hands, stroking the thick brown hair that so resembled Josh's.

"Shhh. It's alright. It's gonna be alright." Donna told her, her thick voice betraying her own tears and her own uncertainty and devastation. "I know you're scared. But we're gonna figure this out, okay? We're gonna figure it out."

Meanwhile, Josh stood stock still as Donna put aside her own grief to comfort her daughter. He always admired the way she put other people first. When they had lost Josh's mom two years earlier, Donna had let the kids cry on her shoulder as long as they needed to before breaking down in Josh's arms later that day.

But right now...he was shocked, angry, and devastated. He hadn't even needed to look at the test for confirmation-Anna's reaction was enough. What could've possessed her? How could she?

"How could you?" were the only words that could come out of his mouth.

Donna and Anna both turned to him. Anna looked hurt. "Dad…"

"Don't 'Dad' me right now, OK? How could you let this happen?" The volume and pitch of Josh's voice raised with every syllable.

"Let's go down to the kitchen and talk," Donna said, trying hard to keep her own anger at the situation under control. She knew that flying off the handle the way Josh was doing would benefit no one, least of all her daughter.

Josh nodded and stalked down the stairs. Donna gave Anna a withering look and followed him. Anna had no choice but to join them.

As soon as they were seated at the table, Josh's interrogation began.

"How did this happen?"

Anna took a breath. "How do these things ever happen?"

"You knew about...your mom talked to you about...what kind of smart-aleck remark is that?"

"Anna," Donna spoke up. "When did this happen?"

Anna looked down. She knew there was no denying it now. "August."

"August?" Donna repeated. "You mean the weekend that your father and I were in Virginia?" She closed her eyes. "Annabeth, please, please tell me that Ben was not in this house while we were…"

"No!"

"And why should we believe you?" Josh said coldly.

"Because it's the truth!" Anna replied. "Now, you can believe me or not, but I'm not lying about that. I would never have betrayed your trust like that."

"Then what? You were in his house?"

"No. We did it at the party we went to that weekend. In Ocean City, remember?"

"Oh. I guess I forgot about that."

"You guess you forgot about that?" Josh asked her.

"I did!" Donna said.

"Ben Kaplan's the father?" Josh asked, moving his gaze back to Anna and rounding on her.

"Yeah. He is."

Josh was quiet for a minute. Then he realized he wouldn't be able to relax until he laid eyes on the guy who did this to his daughter. "Excuse me." He said, barely concealing his anger. He stalked to the front door.

"Dad!" Anna said.

Donna stood up and went to the door. "Josh!" She called. "Don't do this."

Josh turned around when he was halfway out the door. "I have to." He said. And then he was gone.

Donna walked back towards Anna and put her head in her hands. "Does he know?"

"Not yet," Anna replied. "At least not for sure. I told him I might be, that's what we were talking about at the football game."

"Well, he's about to find out," Donna said. She sighed, leaning back in her chair to look her daughter in the eye. "I can't believe this is happening. What were you thinking?"

"I wasn't. I screwed up."

"You think?"

Donna let that dangle away as they fell into an uncomfortable silence.

Ben Kaplan was in the living room of his home in Silver Spring doing his homework when the doorbell rang, followed by a loud knock on the door. Ben jumped up and answered the door to find his girlfriend's father on the other side, who was seething with anger.

"Hey, Mr. Lyman." Ben greeted nonchalantly, apparently not noticing Josh's anger. "What can I do for you?"

"How could you?" Josh asked in a low tone of voice.

Confusion clouded Ben's expression. "How could I?"

"How could you do that to my daughter?" Josh said. He stepped in and stepped in front of Ben.

"How could I do what? What did I do?"

"You know what you did!" Josh said, raising his voice.

"Ben, mijo, who was at the door?" Lucia Kaplan's voice carried into the foyer. "Oh, Josh! Good to see you…" She trailed off as she saw the expression on Josh's face. "What's happening? What has he done?"

"I didn't do anything," Ben said.

"Yes, you did! You got my daughter pregnant, that's what you did!"

Lucia gasped. "Benjamin, Anna's pregnant?"

Ben's eyes widened. "She said she might be, but I never...she never…"

"You didn't...know?" Josh replied.

"Ay, Dios Mio," Lucia said, rolling her head to the ceiling. "When?"

"Ocean City."

"That's what Anna said, too," Josh added. He was starting to feel guilty-not for being angry at Ben, but for barging in the way he did.

"I'm sorry for storming in here." He said apologetically. "But I'm not sorry about being angry. We trusted you two to keep it together, and what did you do?"

"This isn't happening," Lucia muttered. "All right. I don't think anything else can be accomplished tonight. Let Ben rest, and we'll get together in the morning after we've spoken to Mike and we'll work this whole thing out."

Josh seemed to visibly relax. Finally, he said, "I'm sorry...for storming over here. Again. Lucia, we'll see you in the morning."

He walked slowly out, leaving Ben and his mother to take in this bombshell, life-changing news.

It was 7:30 the next morning, and Anna was driving over to the Kaplans. Donna had given her permission to go over to talk about her options with Ben. She felt that this should be Anna's and Ben's decision since they had gotten themselves into this mess in the first place.

Ben was waiting on the doorstep, standing up when he saw Anna get out of the car.

They approached one another and stood on the lawn. For a minute, neither one knew what to say.

"Hey," Anna said.

"Hey," Ben replied. He took a breath. "So, you're really pregnant."

"Yeah. I'm sorry about my dad, by the way."

"How'd they find out?"

"I broke down when I saw the positive result. My parents heard me crying."

"How'd they take it?"

"Did you see my dad last night? That's how they're taking it."

"What about your mom?"

"She says she'll support whatever we decide to do, but...we got ourselves into this, and we have to figure it out ourselves. It's our decision."

"Okay. So what are we gonna do?"

"I don't want to get rid of it."

"Good, 'cause neither do I." At Anna's surprised expression, he explained as they sat on the porch. "It's like this. I'm an only child. What if this is my one chance to have a kid and continue the family line?"

"I see what you're saying, but…" Anna hesitated. "Ben, we're 16. We have our whole lives ahead of us. What if we're not ready to be parents?"

"Since when does age determine who makes a good parent? Women had babies at 17 all the time in the 1900s."

"Yeah, but now people know that teenagers' brains aren't fully developed. I think we should at least consider adoption." Anna replied.

"I'm not saying we don't consider adoption. But, I think with our parents to help us-my mom, your parents-we can do this. We can both get jobs, you go to school while I help with the baby, and vice versa. I'll make sure I'm paying child support. My mom won't let me forget anyway." He put his hand over Anna's. "So what do you say?"

A quiet smile crossed Anna's lips. "Then I guess we're having a baby."

"Yeah." Ben agreed. "We're having a baby."

Their lips met in the middle. There was still a lot to figure out, but for this moment, Anna and Ben knew that everyone would be all right as long as they were together.
