"What is it?" Jon asked Dagur.
"Why are you asking me?" he countered.
"Well you are the only dragon expert here." Oh yeah.
"Whatever it is I can assure you Enigma does not like it so we can assume its a threat. She could be defensive of her new territory. Hell this could be its territory and she invaded in coming here and it wants to chase her off."
"Well that's not gonna happen."
"Nope."
The other dragon stared at them, its eyes darting between the three threats before it. It was thinking, Dagur could feel it. It had greatly underestimated the situation and was trying to figure out a solution. Slowly it lowered its head, growling softly.
Enigma snarled. Her tail flicked with anger and her mane was standing up like a dog's hackles. However there wasn't any fear in the grey and tan dragon as she faced the much bigger purple and silver dragon. In fact, it looked like the other dragon was more cowed on the high ground than Enigma was below it.
"Jon back up," Dagur instructed. The man looked at him. "I'm serious. If it tries anything Enigma will be on it faster than either of us. I don't want to have to tell Iris we shot her dragon."
"Fine," Jon grumbled. He backed up, lowering his rifle. "You better know what you're doing."
He didn't but he wasn't going to tell Jon that. Instead he set his bow to the side and tossed his quiver next to it. The other dragon watched his movement before looking at him. Its eyes didn't hold any hostility. Instead it looked like it was, lonely?
"Hey there big guy," Dagur said as he stepped forward. "You don't want to eat me. I'm too tough and chewy. Enigma's rider would be upset and then Enigma would be even more upset." It glanced at Enigma, who was still growling. "You did something to piss her off didn't you?"
It looked back at him, lowering its head even more. The posture was very submissive now that he watched with a level head. Before he had been worried about Iris and getting her to safety. Now though he could focus and use the knowledge that he had.
"Easy there." He stretched out a hand, his palm facing the dragon, and continued to walk closer.
It tilted its head curiously. Quietly it chirped before stretching itself forward to sniff at Dagur. He continued to move slow and kept his gaze away from its own. Suddenly a warm scaly snouth pushed against his hand with a whimper. Dagur looked forward to see it half hanging off the fence with its eyes closed.
He had just gotten his own dragon. By himself. Holy crap.
Before he could fully register that he now had his very own dragon, Enigma lunged forward with a roar. The other dragon reared back with a squeal as she jumped up to bite at it. Before he could react the other dragon leaped into the compound and darted behind Dagur. It used its tail to push him back as it also backed up away from still snarling Enigma.
"Enigma calm down," Dagur yelled. "It's not a threat! Easy girl!"
He stepped forward and away from the other dragon to grasp Enigma's head. She snarled, moving side to side to try and go around him but he didn't let go. After a few more tries she huffed and settled down to stare at him. Her pupils were constricted to narrow slits of black amongst the red. A low growl still vibrated from her chest as she was still on edge.
"Easy," Dagur said softly. "Its okay. Whatever happened between you two is in the past." She growled. "Calm down."
"Dagur?" He didn't look away from Enigma but the dragon reacted at Iris' voice. "What happened?"
"Come here," he ordered. "Enigma needs you."
With a croon her pupils dilated as Iris hurried over. He moved to the side so she could take his position. The moment her hands cupped the dragon Enigma pressed her face against the young woman purring. Iris pressed her face against the top of the dragon's head, murmuring so softly that Dagur couldn't understand what she was saying.
"Its okay," he said as he reproached the other dragon. "Easy now. Aren't you beat up? You've had a rough life."
Now that he had a better look at the dagon, he noticed it had the same spot type pattern as Enigma but only on its wings and tail fin. A tuft of hair grew from its chin, a scar causing a render between the tuft. More scars covered its body and a set of claw marks scarred its face over its right eye. That eye was a milky grey compared to the other's vibrant silver. Poor thing was blind in that eye.
More scars dotted its wings, all claw marked scars. It had a rough life full of fighting which he could relate to. Gently he stretched out his hands and scratched the dragon's chin. The hair growing from its chin was rough and stiff like straw but the scratches caused the dragon to heave a heavy breath and close its eyes in enjoyment.
"Where did he come from?" Iris asked.
"He?"
"Well, compare him with Enigma. Screams male to me."
"Is that right? Are you a boy? Huh?" The dragon opened its eyes and gave a soft coo. "Guess my lady has an eye for this. A boy you are. Now for your question, I have no idea. Where did you see him come from?"
"From the south east. Enigma roared and shot fire and he responded. Not that she was happy about it." A growl from Enigma enforced Iris' words. "Stay here girl. Wow. He's tore up."
"Mostly healed and scarred but there's a few fresher injuries on his left side. Still old though see? Almost healed."
"Well." Iris looked at him. "Now we have two dragons. What are we going to do?"
"They aren't sleeping in the house that's for sure," Vivian drawled. Enigma chirped with excitement and bounded over to the tall blonde to rub her head against her. "Suck up. I will not have two dragons taking over my living room. Either you build them someplace else to sleep or they figure it out themselves."
"Mom," Iris whined.
"Vivian," Dagur also whined. She glared at both of them.
"I've put up with a lot of you two's nonsense," she said drily. "I will not budge on this. Enigma already snores loud enough to wake the dead."
"She does not," Iris argued.
"Oh yes she does and this is final. No. Dragons. In. The. House."
