Dinner was amazing. Vivian went all out with her cooking. Not only were there plenty of deer steaks for both Dagur and Jon to stuff themselves with, she made her specialty corn bread along with green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, and leftover breakfast biscuits. It was worthwhile to see the look of shock on Dagur's face when he entered the kitchen and her parents yelled surprise. Iris placed a kiss on his cheek.

"Gratulerer med dagen. Jeg elsker deg," she whispered. She had been practicing with her mom in secret to say it to him.

"Gratulerer med dagen," he returned. "I love you too."

Blushing and ignoring the smug look from Vivian and defeated but proud look Jon had Iris sat down at the table. They all ate their fill and cheered when Vivian brought out the cake. Quickly Iris explained to Dagur there was a candle for each of them and to make a wish before blowing out her candle. He blew his out as well before busting out laughing.

"I've never had so many people happy I was born," he chuckled. "Well, maybe at one point but as I got older the number shrank."

"I'm sure your men were happy to have you with them," Jon said as Vivian handed out pieces of cake.

"Probably," Dagur just chuckled.

With his attention on the rich chocolate cake, Iris snuck out and hurried upstairs. Under her parents bed she pulled out the box that held Dagur's gift. She had carefully wrapped it and tied a large bow on it for him. The wrapping was pointless since it would get torn off but she wanted him to know she put a lot of time in the gift.

"Happy birthday," she said in a sing song tone as she placed the gift in front of him. Vivian had wisely not given him another piece of cake yet. "This is for you."

"Wow," he said. She sat next to him and stared at him intently. "Its a pretty box. I like the bow."

"You have to open the box," Iris teased.

"Oh yeah! That's how it works!" He was such a brat. In an instance he shredded the red paper off and had the top of the box off. "Oh. Wow."

"Do you like them?"

He nodded slowly as he stared at the matching hatchet pair inside. His hand trembled as he reached for one. She knew he was used to much larger war axes but around here they weren't of much use. Throwing hatchets though, those would be useful.

Jon grunted his approval, admiring the hatchets as well as Dagur took the cover off the one's head. The dark steel glittered in the light. Under the hatchet head Iris had tied a tooth on each hatchet. However she spent a few nights hiding and carving Jager's outline on them. She had used beet root and dyed the carvings a deep red so they would stand out on the aged white tooth.

"Amazing," he breathed. "They are perfect. Perfect weight and size, like they were made for me."

"Guess I have a good eye," Iris teased. "Happy birthday again Dagur."

"Thank you Iris," he said quietly. "Really. Thank you."

"Well Jon and I's gift won't be able to compare but here," Vivian said as she handed his a wrapped box as well. Inside was a handmade leather belt and a pair of leather bracers and leather gloves. "Now you have a belt to hang them from and something to protect your wrists and hands while you play with them. Absolutely no throwing them in the house young man."

"Yes ma'am," he said eagerly. He already had the bracers on. "Thank you."

"Here's yours honey," Vivian said as she handed Iris a wrapped box.

Inside was her own pair of handmade leather gloves that went up to her elbows. They were so soft and flexible it was if they were a second skin. She admired them before Vivian nudged the box again. Pulling out the tissue paper, Iris found something else. She pulled out a pair leather boots that reached up to her knee. White rabbit fur was used a trim on both.

"Riding gear," Jon explained. "The inner part of your boots are extra thick to withstand Enigma's scales and the gloves will keep your hands safe."

"Thank you Mom, Dad," she said earnestly. She wanted to go and try on the boots already.

"Mine isn't as amazing as what you got me," Dagur suddenly grumbled. "Here. Happy birthday."

He pulled out a small object that was roughly wrapped in paper. Iris grinned at him as his tried to keep from blushing. Purposely she slowly opened it. Inside was a white scale, about as big as a rose petal, with a chain attached on either side. In the middle an iris was carved through. She stared at it in awe, unable to fully process what she was looking at.

"I'm sorry ," he muttered. "I should have-Offf!"

She threw herself at him, almost knocking him off his seat. Without worrying about her parents she gave him a kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck. Even though she surprised him he readily returned the kiss.

"I love it," she breathed once they pulled apart. "Its beautiful. Thank you Dagur."

"Its nothing," he muttered. "Just one of Enigma's scales I thought would be a nice necklace. It's not-" Iris hugged him tightly, cutting off his words, and jumped off.

"Mom! Mom! Look!" She showed her the necklace.

"Don't degrade yourself boy," Jon drawled as Vivian ooed over the necklace. "She likes it. Take that and don't try to deny it."
