The morning light bared into the room igniting it in a fiery glow. The castle was quiet not a soul awake at the uncommon hour. I looked outside the window examining the court yard. Only a dozen of guards held their positions, not being able to make out any of them from the distance I turned away from the window with a sigh.
"Good morrow dear." Liz said bubbling into the room with a large smile. She could be a hard ass but it was always with a purpose. She wanted the best for the future queen of the kingdom of light.
"Good morning mother." I spoke quickly my thoughts distracted by the numerous things on my mind.
"Caroline you must get ready. Your father is returning home today and he wouldn't want his beautiful daughter all sour faced." Loudly I drew out a sigh. We had to do this once a month when my father would return home from his political meetings and ventures. He would leave for a month come back for two weeks and then leave again. It was a process I had gotten much familiar with.
I let my silk night gown fall as my mother picked out a dress for me to wear. I hated the squeezing and tightening of the corset but it no longer made me feel like my ribs were cracking so that was a positive.
"All done love. Listen after breakfast don't you be a minute late to the front gates. I'll send Jacob to fetch you for your fathers return." I swallowed down my pride and forced a smile to please her. Thankfully she took it as a goodbye and hurried out of the room to her next mission. I hated Jacob with a passion I could never explain. He acted as if he were my father but in reality he was just my personal guard he followed me around like a lost puppy constantly telling me what to do and what not to do.
I peaked my head out of the room looking from left to right and straight ahead. Left was the corridor to more rooms, right was my parents study, and straight ahead led to the rest of the kingdom. Happily I rushed straight ahead. No one was in sight so I could go see him, the boy I loved.

Bonnie walked through the gardens examining each flower with a keen eye. She wasn't meant to be there due to her being a farmers daughter but she loved the castle so much. She longed to be something more than a commoner.
"Are you supposed to be here?" Bonnie quickly turned feeling her stomach twist.
"I'm sorry I'll- I'll go." She stuttered trying to shuffle by the man that scolded her for being there. He caught her arm quickly causing Bonnie to suck in air with fear.
"What is your name?" He whispered.
Bonnie looked into his eyes trying to deceiver if he was going to kill her.
"Bon..." she couldn't finish the sentence as she noticed the tattoo on his wrist.
"It's not safe going where you are forbidden." Bonnie felt her stomach twist as the large smirk that spread across his face. But she needed to stand her ground.
"And what about you dark one?" The boy looked a bit surprised the commoner could recognize him.
"Kol mikaelson at your service." He bowed properly with a smile.
Bonnie hadn't noticed it was the prince of the dark kingdom nor had she noticed the immense danger she was in. He was a demon from the ground. His whole family was, and he held power no human ever could and they never aged.
"You shouldn't be here. You know the agreement." Bonnie muttered backing up into a rose bush. Her eyes kept glancing at the space between his thumb and index where the mikaelson "m" crest laid. She hissed as the thorns prodded her back.
Kol sniffed the air smelling the girls blood prickle out from the needles that taunted the beautiful flowers.
"I was a bit hungry and you know the rule of not killing your own." Kol went to flash towards the girl but was caught off guard as a sword was pushed through his chest. As his body fell behind him stood Kai Parker the dream boy Bonnie had always been in love with, ever since she was a child and they would run together in the gardens.
"Bonnie." He held her tightly in his arms kissing her on her head. She shook violently. "Are you okay?" He whispered staring down into her eyes. Bonnie couldn't look for long. Her hands would begin sweating and her heart beat would speed up increasingly fast.
But he, he could look at her all day because to him she was his best friend and nothing more. He swore protection over her when he beat up two commoners for bullying Bonnie when he was only eight. Every since then the two were inseparable.
"Kai." Kai turned smiling as he wrapped the blonde beauty in his arms and kissed her passionately.
"Caroline." He whispered hugging her back tightly.
They broke apart as they heard fast approaching footsteps.
"Your majesty we need you in the court room now." Jacob the 38 year old guard quickly spoke with no affliction. That was until his eyes went wide as he saw the dark prince at his feet.
"What is going on here!" He demanded.
Bonnie stepped forward quickly explaining.
"You commoner are not welcomed on these grounds." Jacob began ignoring the part where the blood thirsty trespasser tried to kill her.
"Stop this! I am the princess you will gather more guards and bring the monster to the cells where my father will properly deal with him. As for her, I am speaking to my mother about her becoming one of my royal ladies, so until otherwise she will remain at my side. Now... take me to my father." Caroline usually held back her royal tongue but when she needed to use it she did.
"That is the problem princess your father never returned." To most this wouldn't be a problem but her father prided himself on being punctual to every event. He always joked he would behead any carriage driver who made him late.
Caroline looked at Kai and Bonnie of course she was late to see her fathers arrival the only difference is this time he was also late.
"Handle this." She said indicating to Kols body before running as fast as she could to her mothers room. When she opened it bishops and advisors surrounded her mother.
"Out now!" Caroline said with a strict voice. The men and women filed out closing the door behind them. Caroline hugged her sobbing mother.
"Mother he could be fine there's no need to over react." Caroline said trying to calm her mothers nerves.
"Your father has never been late, ever." Liz said with puffy eyes.
"I know but this kingdom needs you right now. You need to announce a search for father. Send 100 men out. In the morning, if there is no return we send a hundred more. We'll find him mom I promise you." Caroline hugged her mom sliding her hand over her hair.
Liz dried up her tears.
"I'm not feeling so well my love." Caroline bit her lip questioning her mothers health.
Caroline noticed the pale tint to her mothers skin and the sweat that beamed off her forehead.
"Are you sick?" Caroline asked worried.
"I just need to sleep. Will you handle this?" Caroline didn't know what to say, her mother would never allow her to rule unless there was something genuinely wrong. But Caroline took a deep breath, walked out of the room, and made a decision to become the princess her kingdom needed.

I looked at my reflection in the full length mirror with gold trimming. Feeling the tears hit my cheeks I quickly wiped them away. The dress I wore was sheer black. Not a single hint of color was placed on my body as my maids dressed me. They placed a large black veil over my face and hair finishing the ensemble.
"All done your majesty." Mary bowed with Julia before they exited. They had been my maids since I was a child and I looked up to them with much respect. They had both worked their entire life's in the castle while also serving they're families.
I was left alone in the empty room. Finally alone... it felt weird to say considering how the last month I had been surrounded by royals, advisors, bishops, lords, and the terrified commoners of the kingdom of light.
I hadn't even gotten a chance to accept what happened, what was happening, my whole life was falling apart right before me and I felt like I was just tumbling into an endless black hole of sorrow.
"Queen your mother wishes to see you." I turned violently on Jacob.
"I'm not the Queen Mathews... now take me to my mother without another word." I spat sourly. I was angry and sad and all the above. I wasn't a spiteful person but I couldn't help but feel resentment towards everyone around me. As I was walking I smiled weakly as Kai caught up to me wearing a black ensemble of fabric I didn't care to identify.
He held my hand and gave me a weak smile. Jacob noticed and let out a little sigh.
Approaching my mothers door I stopped not wanting to go in. I hated seeing her these last few days. I loved her greatly and the sight boar a hole into my chest that was beginning to feel as if it'll never be filled again.
"I could go in with you?" Kai suggested with a small smile.
"No it's... it's okay I got this." I slowly reached forward and twisted the handle.
