Chapter 50: One Last Sight
The family heads to the Higurashi house in no time. Since the case is justified, Kagome though it would be a good time as any for Inuyasha to see Kikyo before she goes to afterlife to rest in peace. Shockingly enough, the mannequin was able to hold onto Kikyo's spirit with no problem which made it convenient for her to ride in the car with Mrs. Hitori since she has to be with it and not lose it. Kikyo rides in Mrs. Hitori because she believes that riding with the family could be a bit overwhelming for them, even if that vehicle is the family van.
"I guess this is the last time I get to be in the world of the living." Kikyo breaks the silent moment, trying to see if there's anything that Mrs. Hitori needs in return. "You did great, Kikyo. I knew for sure that you would be able to pull it off without a doubt." Mrs. Hitori smiles even though she has to be keeping her eyes on the road. "I deeply appreciate your assistance to help me to be with my mom. As well put Tsubaki in her place." Kikyo spoke a few seconds later. They pull up to the street where the family lives on. "I see that they live in the house I was going to move to." Kikyo chuckles at the scene. Mrs. Hitori pulls to the side of the street since the driveway is narrow for only two vehicles to be able to fit on.
Kagome comes out of the van and goes into the house with Kaede right behind her. "Should Kikyo come in too?" Kaede asks her cousin. "Of course. Bring her to your room. I'll meet you down there." Kagome agrees. Kaede goes back outside to see Kikyo coming out of the other car. "Hey, over here." Kaede waves to Kikyo to get her attention. Kikyo doesn't waste another second and goes into the house with her stepsister. Kikyo follows Kaede to the basement. She spots the bedroom that Kaede and her mother sleep in. "This basement used to be empty. But because of what Miyuki and I had to live in. my mom stepped in and brought them here." Kagome explains to Kikyo as they get comfortable in Kaede's bedroom.
While talking to catch up since Kikyo's passing, Kikyo was surprised that Kagome was being bullied by Tsubaki due to their resemblances. "That must've been hard on you." Kikyo comments to her cousin gently. "I managed to ignore for awhile until I was provoked." Kagome just shakes off the issue. "So how is he doing?" Kikyo asks Kagome nervously. "He's getting there. I was able to tell that he was suffering from your death. The weird thing is that the moment he saw me, he believed that I was you. I had no idea that I would remind him constantly of you." Kagome takes a deep breath before she spoke. "It'd be as if were twins, and he couldn't tell us apart."' She jokes in the end.
Kagome's phone dings to alert her a message has been sent. Kagome unlocks the phone to see that it's Inuyasha waiting outside on the patio. "Ok. He's on the patio. Are you ready to do this, Kikyo?" Kagome asks her cousin. Kikyo nods her responds and follows Kagome upstairs to the kitchen. "Just wait in the kitchen until I give the signal to come out to see him face to face." Kagome gives her instructions to Kikyo and goes out onto the patio where Inuyasha is waiting on to the lounge chair. "Hey. Sorry to make you wait." Kagome greets him. Inuyasha stands up to grab her shoulders, which startles Kagome upon his touch. "Are you ok? I hope nothing happened to you at the court case." He asks her quickly. "I'm fine. Tsubaki was proven guilty because she was the one who killed Kikyo by using a rifle gym to shoot the tires of her car." Kagome was able to get his hands off her shoulders to calm him down.
"Ok, that's good to hear. So what is this surprise you have for me?" Inuyasha ask her suspiciously. Kagome breaths deeply. "I just want you to know this is the only chance I'm able to provide for you." She said to him in the eye before turning to the sliding doors. "Ok." She calls to the doors. The door slides to one side to reveal the one person Inuyasha would never expect to see again. "Hello, Inuyasha." Kikyo's voice spoke serenely to him. Kagome knows that this is meant to be a private moment. "I'll leave you to alone." She is able to leave his side, but Inuyasha grabs her wrist to stop her. "What are you trying to pull here?" He asks her in disbelief.
"I asked her." Kikyo said to him. "How is it that you're here?" Inuyasha asks her. "Figures. You're sometimes clueless when it comes to things like this." Kikyo chuckles as she comes up to him. "She believed that you deserve to see me one last time before I depart this world." Inuyasha releases Kagome's wrist. "I thought you died. Then how are you…" But Kikyo stops him. "I'm possessing the mannequin, remember? Or do you forget the conversation at the shop?" Inuyasha now feels like an idiot for doing something so dumb. "Ok. Anyway. I'm happy that you were avenged by your family." Inuyasha was able to say that while rubbing the back of his neck because of awkwardness.
Kikyo nods, "Yes. It's thanks to them I was able to find peace. And I just wanted to make sure I could finish what I was supposed to do before my death." She said to him. "Finish what?" Inuyasha asks her. "The thing was that I wanted to break up with you properly." Inuyasha nods back to her, being as understanding as he could. "I knew that doing over the phone wouldn't e able to convince you so if I did it in person, it'd work." Kikyo continues on with her reason. After telling Inuyasha, she begins to glow. "What's happening to you?" Inuyasha asks as he takes her shoulders. "I guess my time's up, Inuyasha. I have had a nice time to see you again. Not just you, but also Kagome. I know for sure that at some point in life, you're put to the test of relationships between two people. I guess I failed, and Inuyasha here hasn't finished his." Kikyo's body is about to disappear. "Farewell, Inuyasha." Kikyo kisses him on the cheek and fades away in yellow lights. Inuyasha looks down to see that the mannequin is in her position.
