Chapter 5: Friends
*May 4, 2013 2 PM. 1 week after Marshall decided to Compete*
Location: Abandoned Lookout
Marshall's POV
It's been a week since I decided to compete in Ryder's competition. All I knew was I was competing against 3 other pups, and backing them up was a team, whereas I had to do it by myself. Max finally responded to me saying this
Hey hermanito!
I'm so sorry that I haven't been responding to your messages, I've been doing extra jobs around the hospital for extra money since we really need it. Also, I'm going to be transferring to a different hospital in about a month, just wanted you to know. Now to what you said, you're gonna compete to be Paw Patrol's fire pup? I'm gonna see if I can take the day off to come and watch you, but if I don't I'll watch you on the news! I'm so proud of you! Mom and Dad would be too, just remember this hermanito: Do your best, forget the rest. Good luck Marshall, I'll be watching you, mom and dad will be watching over you too.
Love Max
Reading Max's words just made me even more determined, so I dedicated a day to practicing getting into my uniform and hopping into the fire truck since I'm assuming I'll be doing that a lot, and Ryder let me the equipment that I would be using on if I joined Paw Patrol to practice with. I just practiced putting the vest on as fast as I could, then it soon went to putting on the pup-pack as well. I only hit my head 5 times putting on the pup-pack
The next 2 days I dedicated to making my accuracy better with the water cannons in the pup-pack. I had a basic setup, some old furniture to use as debris, some plates to use at targets, and a nearby pool of water to use when I needed a refill. I would run my homemade course a couple of times before I changed it up so I didn't get used to the same course over and over again. My clumsiness came here and there, but I was getting better overall.
The next 3 days was just me doing everything that I practiced, but doing it on more difficult terrain. My clumsiness made me fall a lot more these days, but I'm getting better with each day. I'm glad that Chase comes and visits me because he's kinda the reason why I'm pushing myself. He comes to give me food and gives me tips on what to do, despite him only being a police pup.
I was about to get ready to start practicing since tomorrow is the competition, but I heard something from the entrance of the fire station, so I decided to investigate who was trespassing. It wasn't who I wanted to see
"Well looky here, it's Marshfail!" Butch said to me with a smirk
"What do you want Butch? I have nothing!" I said
"What? I can't visit my friend?" Butch said mockingly
"Friend? Like hell you were! You treated me like crap after you couldn't stand my clumsiness anymore!" I yell out to him "Get out Butch, you're not allowed to be here" I said, standing my ground
"That's new, you haven't fallen yet cowering, but I feel like that's gonna change very, very soon" Butch said, showing his teeth
"GET OUT NOW!" I yelled, showing my own teeth
"What are you gonna do Marshfail? Last I checked, you didn't do shit!" Butch yelled to me making me take a step back "Oh yeah, you didn't do shit, making your parents die!"
"THEIR DEATHS WERE NEVER MY FAULT! GET THE HELL OUT NOW!" I say, my voice being loud
"If you want me to leave, you're gonna have to make me, Marshfail!" Butch said to me
That was it, I had to stand my ground, I'm not gonna cower on the floor, I'll make him leave! Instead of submitting to his words, I ran up to him, and socked him in his muzzle.
"GET. OUT. NOW!" I yell
"Wow, that was surprising, but you'll regret that Marshfail!" Butch then sent me across the room, making me hit my back against the walls of the old fire station, making a crack in the weak bricks. "I'm gonna enjoy this" My vision was very blurry, and I just saw Butch coming up to me slowly, grinning as he did, until I heard something.
"GET AWAY, NOW." I didn't recognize the voice at first, but the owner of the voice was growling very loudly. Soon my vision went from seeing stars and everything being blurry to seeing Chase. He was here.
"Who are you? You his boyfriend?" Butch asked "Hey, your a german shepherd like me, help me beat up this lowlife" Butch said, turning his head towards me. What he didn't expect was Chase to push him to the ground, hard.
"I'M WARNING YOU AGAIN. LEAVE. NOW." Chase said growling very loud. Butch got up and tried to punch Chase, but Chase parried the punch and sent Butch a punch of his own to the muzzle "LAST AND FINAL CHANCE. LEAVE. NOW!" Chase stood his ground, growling and showing Butch that he meant business
"Looks like you got lucky Marshfail, I'll see you later" And Butch ran off. Chase then ran up to me checking to see if I was okay
"Marshall! You okay?!" He asked me worried
"I… think? He threw me hard against this wall" I said, releasing a violent cough
"Come on, let's get you back to the Lookout, Ryder can help you" Chase told me
"O-*cough*-kay" I replied. Chase had his truck already made, so he helped me in the passenger seat and he drove off to the Lookout.
"Hey Chase, who do you ha-Marshall?! Are you okay?!" Ryder said worried to me. It made me feel glad to know they care about me this much
"I *cough* don't know." I said
"What happened?" Ryder asked me while picking me up and putting me in his ATV
"Butch decided to *cough* push me against a brick wall, where we go-*cough* going?" I asked Ryder
"I'm taking you to Katie's, she'll be able to see if you're okay" Ryder told me. The drive wasn't that long, especially since Katie's Parlor was just across the bridge.
"Hey Ryder, what happened?" Katie asked worried
"Marshall says he was pushed against a brick wall, can you give him a check-up and see if he's alright?"
"Yeah, set him down here" Katie said pointing to a spot on a table. After about 20 minutes, Katie was done. "Good news, he'll be fine, just some bruises."
"Any bad news?" Ryder asked
"Nope, like I said, he'll be fine. I know about your competition tomorrow, just as long as he doesn't fall on his back too much, he'll be fine to compete."
"That's good to hear, didn't want all my practicing to go to waste" I said
"Marshall, let's go back to the Lookout, you can rest there" Ryder told me
"Are you sure? I'm… not your pup you know" I said, not trying to sound rude
"I know, but you need a place to rest, and that fire station you're living in isn't a great place to rest" Ryder said
"Please Marshall?" I look over to see Chase asking me that question
"Okay, let's go" I said
"YES!" Chase said happy.
When Ryder took me back to the Lookout, he set me down on the beanbag I was on a week before, and Chase sat next to me. "What do you wanna do Marshall?" Chase asked me
"I just want to rest, I've been training for the past 6 days." I replied
"Wanna watch Apollo the Super Pup?" He asked me
"What's that?" I asked tilting my head
"You don't know what that is?!" Chase said surprised "You're gonna love the show, let me put it up" Chase went to the big screen and put up a TV show of a superhero pup. After the first episode I loved the show immediately.
"HOW HAVE I NEVER SEEN THIS SHOW?! IT'S THE BEST!" I said
"Well, now you have Marshall" Chase said to me smiling
"Hey Chase" I said
"Yeah Marshall?" Chase listened
"Thanks" I said smiling at Chase
"For what?" Chase questioned, tilting his head
"For defending me when I couldn't, and for being my Best Friend" I said smiling. Chase got up smiling and gave me a hug
"Anytime Marshall, anytime"
"Best Friends till the end?" I asked Chase
"Best Friends till the end" Chase finished as we kept watching more Apollo
And I'm ending this chapter here!
I hope I made Marshall and Chase's friendship seem real, I'm still new to writing, so I don't know how to make touching moments be, ya know, touching.
Besides that, see y'all in the next chapter!
