Prologue: I Got You

Dante felt the burning tears fall down his face as he watched his twin fall into the chasm. He couldn't believe that his twin was so thirsty and obsessed for power. Shaking his head clear after the ground shook again, Dante replaced his half of the Perfect Amulet around his neck, dismissed Rebellion and grabbed their father's Force Edge which he won, placing it onto his back. It was now his. But it was a bittersweet victory. He picked up Kalina Ann and with a silent farewell to where Vergil had fallen, he got the hell out of there before the portal closed. Lady saw the sadness in Dante's face and knew the red clad Devil Hunter just lost his loved one, just as she had. Despite Arkham being a power crazed dickwad, he was her father and she loved him.

"Even a Devil May Cry at the loss of a loved one." She said softly. Dante nodded and after taking out the horde that tried to ambush them, the new friends and comrades at arms said their goodbyes, exchanged numbers and went their ways. Dante wasn't for heading home just yet. So, he boarded a ferry for Fortuna.

It was twilight when Dante stepped off the ferry and walked down the streets aimlessly. His heart was breaking repeatedly as he tried to reach for his twin but there was no response. This made Dante's tears start up again. Despite it all, he loved Vergil. His love went deeper than anything and he knew that the elder's did too.

Their first kiss was when they were six under their favorite Sakura tree. Dante had shyly kissed the elder's cheek while he was reading. Instead of getting angry, Vergil just smiled and just kissed his cheek back before returning to his book. Dante blushed but smiled as he looked away, returning to his own book before their mother called them inside for dinner.

His memory was shaken clear when he heard a heartbreaking cry. It was a baby in trouble. Dante ran and saw a baby in a black blanket, clearly abandoned and the orphanage was closed. The baby was a newborn, only three days old. Dante gently picked up the baby and immediately the baby calmed.

"You poor thing, what's your name?" Dante asked gently. He examined the baby and his heart melted. The features were angelic, downy snow-white hair and fair skin. The baby opened his eyes a bit, but Dante could see that they were ocean blue. He also saw that the baby was a boy. On the blanket, embroidered in blue, was a name. Nero. "Well Nero, my name is Dante and it's a pleasure to meet you. Let's say we get out of here and get warm hm?" The baby gurgled and grabbed Dante's fingers with a tiny hand. Dante was enamored.

"Don't you worry Kid," Dante whispered softly as he placed a gentle kiss onto the baby's forehead. "I got you."

After making sure Nero was warm and fed, Dante cradled the baby in his arms and boarded a ferry back to Capulet City. He decided that it was best to take Nero home with him. As soon as he touched shore, he raced the baby to the doctor, for a checkup.

"Mr. Redgrave, what are you doing here?" The nurse said startled. She and the doctor, Dr. James, had seen Dante since he was eight years old.

"I found this little guy in Fortuna, abandoned at an orphanage which was closed."

"Oh no that's terrible! Well, let's take the little fella in." Dante nodded and cradled the baby and gently set him down on the table. The nurse smiled at how the teen was with the baby. He'll be a great father, the little one loves him already…

"Alright, let's start with his name."

"His name is Nero. It's on his blanket."

"Does little Nero have a last name?"

"I'll give him mine." Dante said firmly. The nurse nodded and wrote Nero Redgrave.

"Date of birth?"

"Um, I'd estimate he's three days old." Dante said as Nero gurgled. The nurse examined the baby and nodded in confirmation.

"You're correct Mr. Redgrave. He was born three days ago." She grabbed a calendar. She wrote down the year. "Today is the 19th of May so his date of birth was May 16th." She wrote it down. "Well, let's get to it and I'll Dr. James in. Congratulations Mr. Redgrave! It's a boy!"

"What's that, our Dante's a father?" Dr. James teased as he walked into the office. "Finally done the deed eh?"

"Doc! NO!" Dante said with a blush. "I found Nero outside an orphanage."

"Well, after today, he's as good as yours, son. Welcome to Fatherhood!" He lightly clapped Dante on the shoulder. "Now, let's examine the lad."

Nero was the perfect patient, well behaved and took his shots like a big boy. Despite himself Dante grinned from pride. He couldn't explain it, but Nero pulled at his heartstrings and quickly awakened something in the Devil Hunter.

"Well, the lad has a clean bill of health." Dr. James said. "Dante, what would you like to do?" The red clad Devil Hunter smiled gently at the baby and kissed his forehead. Dr. James smiled gently at the interaction. He knew Dante's answer but he wanted to hear it from the young father to be.

"I'd like to adopt him." Dante said firmly, making sure to keep his voice gentle. He didn't want to frighten Nero.

"Good job. I'll help you with the papers and all. Now, why don't you take your new son home? There is a lot to do. I'll see you both again, next month." Dante nodded, gently picked up Nero and hugged him. The child was now his.

Doctor James and the nurse sent the new family with a starter's kit and a car seat for Dante's car, showing him how it worked. Dante thanked them both before carefully settling Nero into his car seat and to the nearest mall. Nero couldn't sleep in a bed and he needed things and Dante made sure he was going to get it.

After settling on his baby's needs and shopping for food, Dante and Nero returned to Devil May Cry. Dante opened the doors and cradled Nero to him. Oh, there is so much to do. Don't worry Nero, we'll learn together. He thought as he placed a loving kiss onto the downy hair. Nero looked up at his newfound father and smiled.
