Rose was barely three the first time she remembered being in the hospital.
Her mother had just given birth to Hugo, Harry and Ginny had babysat her the previous night, and she remembered how exciting it was to show Albus, her best friend in the whole wide world, her new brother. She wasn't sure what it meant really, but she knew that everyone was excited for her and she knew that her mother and father had never smiled quite like they did when discussing her new baby brother.
Since then, she had spent a multitude of hours in the hospital. Between the many, many Weasley babies being born, the Quidditch accidents, when she broke her arm the first (and last time) she was on a broom, Rose was all too familiar with the white walls and the sterile smell of the hospital walls.
And honestly?
She loved it. It was odd, some people thought, that a place where people go when they're hurt is a place Rose felt secure in. But when she saw St. Mungo's, she still saw it the way she had as a three-year-old girl.
She had seen healers-then, they were serious adults in white coats- rushing around, using incredible magic, healing the most important people in her life, bring joy to people in a way she had never really seen before, and she had decided then and there that's what she wanted to do.
And she hadn't changed her mind since then.
However, walking into her Nana Molly's room, Teddy close behind her, this was the first time she realized what everyone else, particularly her family, saw when they thought of the hospital.
As she looked at the faces of her grandfather, her parents, her aunts, and uncles, she realized what a scary place this was.
"Hi, Nana." She said, trying to smile. Molly smiled warmly at her granddaughter and opened her eyes wide as Rose hugged her, Teddy following suit.
"Oh, you two! You should both be at Hogwarts-you shouldn't be missing school and work for me." She scolded, maintaining the Molly Weasley glare though, Rose knew she was happy to see them.
For a woman who had just suffered a heart attack, she was surprisingly cheerful.
That's Molly Weasley for you.
"Oh, Nana, you know this is more important." She said, waving her hand.
George smirked at her."Besides, mum, she's Hermione's-You think she hasn't already done all her homework? At this point, I'm sure she's probably done her and Alby's for the rest of the year. Isn't that right, Posie?" He patted her on the head and she glared as the previously silent room laughed quietly, and George seemed pleased with himself.
She gave her parents a tight hug, leaving momentarily to go get coffee with Victoire, who was sniffling and completely lost it once they left the room.
"I-i'm sorry for mailing you, Ro-Rosie, I just...I mailed Teddy, and I knew you'd be able to tell if something was off, and we-we needed you to tell everyone back at Hogwarts and I just-" Victoire looked at her for another second before starting to cry again. Rose hugged her, closing her eyes tightly.
"No, thank you for telling me. How's Grandad?" She asked, pulling away and holding her hands.
Victoire wiped at her eyes. Absentmindedly, Rose wondered how someone could look this beautiful after just bawling their eyes out. Kind of unfair.
"He-he's okay, I think, they just don't know much yet, and-and you know, with stuff like this magic only does so much, they still don't even know what happened."
Rose frowned and nodded."Where is everyone else?" She said, feeling slightly guilty she just noticed the others weren't there.
"Well, James and Fred were there this morning, but they had to get back to work- they're covering for George so he could be here, Percy and his kids will be here later, everyone else is taking shifts."
Rose nodded, closing her eyes for a minute.
Victoire tucked Rose's hair behind her ear."I'm sorry we had to take you from school." She said sympathetically, though there was a hint of mocking in her tone. Rose cracked a small smile.
"I have a feeling my Defense professor will understand," She said, nodding her head towards Teddy.
"If not," Vic winked," I think I can talk to him."
Rose agreed, sitting down in a chair, and closing her eyes. Her heart tightened thinking about telling her family at Hogwarts, and how maybe they were gonna be mad at her for not telling them what was going on, but she couldn't, not until she knew everything was going to be fine.
She had, over the course of her six years at Hogwarts, taking a large role of responsibility in looking after her cousins and brother. She made sure Hugh was also on top of homework, possibly to the point of nagging, was there for Lily anytime she needed advice (Sometimes, even when she didn't want it. Maybe even especially when she didn't want it), and kept Al from going too...dark and lonely.
Between this, and the constant studying, she didn't really have time for too many friends outside of Jo and the occasional study group with Ravenclaws in her year
Some people thought of her to be a little closed off, possibly even going as far as calling her snobby, but she didn't let it get to her.
She just prioritized well.
"You know," Victoire spoke softly, drawing her out of her thoughts, "Teddy could talk to them if you're...you know." She trailed off.
Rose shook her head, smiling weakly."No, no, you know I've got them." She said, resting her head on her shoulder."I just need to know what I'm telling them, and then hopefully she'll be back home so they don't all have to come here. You know how Al gets in hospitals." She shrugged, and Victoire nodded. They walked back to the hospital room, and Rose into Al, contrary to Rose, absolutely hated being in hospitals and found them creepy and eerie. She didn't see a reason for him to be here if Nana was going to be home safe in only a matter of time.
Thinking of the dread she felt about returning, knowing that her family knew something was up when she disappeared under the guise of 'Prefect stuff', an obvious lie given Scorpius was also a Prefect and had no fucking idea what she was on about.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a very pretty brunette doctor gently tapping on the door. Rose looked over at her for a second and wondered briefly if she had met this her before. She looked so familiar, but Rose couldn't place where she would know her form.
Her parents, along with Harry and Ginny must have had the same thought, because they stared at her with the same confusing look before the woman spoke.
"Hello, you must be the Weasley's, Hi Molly," She shook her hand," I'm Astoria Malfoy, I'm going to be the one you come to see every month so we can monitor you." She said, smiling kindly, maybe a little nervously as the heads who quickly snapped up at her name.
Rose gulped, looking at Astoria. She knew Scorpius's mom worked here, Al had mentioned it before, but she didn't know she was a Healer. Not that she knew what she would've done with that information but it would've been nice to know.
"Malfoy?"Ron said gruffly, "As in...Draco Malfoy?"
She nodded, flipping back to the chart."My husband." She said curtly, still smiling tightly. "Is that... going to be a problem?"
"Yes." Ron said, at the same time Ginny and Harry replied "Of course not."
She shifted uncomfortably as Ginny glared at Ron."No," She repeated."It won't be." She shook her hand, smiling at her."I'm Ginny Potter, and this is my husband, Harry Potter. "
She shook both Harry and Ginny's hands as her eyes lit up."Oh! You're Albus's parents? It's so nice to meet the people who raised my son's best friend."
"Same to you." Harry said," Scorpius is a great kid."
Ron rolled her eyes, groaning."Oh, you two can't be serious, I'm not having my mother being taken care of by Draco Malf-"
Both Hermione and Molly interrupted him."Ronald!"
He shrunk back slightly at Nana Weasley continued to yell."Now, this is my heart, and I am completely comfortable having her be my doctor, just because you are still holding a grudge against someone you haven't liked since you were eleven!"
Ron grumbled about how it was 'more than just a disliking', but Molly just rolled her eyes and turned her head back to Astoria, smiling again."I'm sorry dear, please continue."
"Right, well, I've been looking at your chart and I'm going to start you on a potion daily to help with your stress. Your condition isn't uncommon, we've been seeing it a lot in people who were mothers during the war. The stress of it all...It takes a toll on a body." She nodded sympathetically."I'd like to monitor you, see you back here in a month?"
Molly nodded."I told you all I was fine! Will you please tell my family I'm fine! Rosie, you need to get back to school. She wants to be a healer, tell her she needs to stay in school to do that" She said sternly.
Astoria made eye contact with Rose."Oh, you must be Rose Weasley. Yes, you should head back to school," her eyes twinkled and she smirked slightly," If I recall correctly, you should be in school, giving my son a bat bogey hex."
Rose blushed as her family members started to laugh."Oh, I'm sorry, I-i, um," she stuttered, scratching the back of her neck. Great, the first healer who she knows thinks she is an absolute nut job who hexes her son basically as an extracurricular.
She shook her head, laughing."No, I'm sure my Scorpius deserved it," she shook her head, walking through the room to leave. She stopped to look at Rose."You're serious about wanting to be a healer?"
Rose nodded, looking at her. "Never been more serious about anything in my life."
Astoria nodded, smiling."You sound like me. Next Saturday, at eight AM, meet me in the front of the building. I'll give you a tour, see what it's like around here." She winked and walked out, leaving Rose with her mouth slightly open.
"Wow, Rose," George smirked,"Using your poor nanny's illness for your own gain? To hangout with a Malfoy? Tsk, tsk, Rosie."
She rolled her eyes, knocking him with her shoulder."So funny." She went to hug Molly, kissing the top of her head."I'm gonna head back now, I'll be by the house as soon as I can. Feel better, Nana" She hugged the rest of her family, which took a ridiculous amount of time. Her mom told her she was excited for her and nudged Ron until she said the same thing. She left with Teddy, unable to keep thoughts of Scorpius's mother out of her head.
Why did she even know who she was? And, if the only reason she knew who she was because of the fighting between her and Malfoy, what is wrong with her that she'd still be interested in showing her around?
Maybe all Malfoys are sadistic nut jobs.
Teddy got them back to the castle, keeping his arm wrapped around her shoulders."You ready?"
She shrugged, closing her eyes for a moment."Yeah, I guess." She frowned, blinking back tears."It's weird, right? Seeing her in a hospital bed. Not running around, cooking and yelling at us, not even knitting. It's...weird." She finished lamely."I forget sometimes, you know. That the same people who taught me how to ride my bike and I've seen argue over the color of kitchen cabinets lived through a war? Basically, saved the entire world? It's like they're so vulnerable but at the same time, like, nothing could really happen to them." She rambled, then looked at Teddy and her heart dropped."Oh, Teddy, I'm sorry I didn't mean-"
He smiled, shaking his head."Stop. I know what you mean. It's weird, but, you know, she'll be okay, right?"
She looked at him and saw that he needed reassurance. "Of course," She half lied. Truthfully, she wasn't sure of that herself."Weasleys can survive anything, this isn't going to be the thing that takes down the great Molly Weasley." She grinned at him."Now, you go back to your class before that absolutely incompetent guy they had stand in you for last time you were out nearly ruined your third years."
He laughed in agreement as they parted ways and Rose made her way into the 'house unity common room' that was built after the battle at Hogwarts, put in place rather than individual common rooms to promote, as the name suggests, house unity.
She found her family members, along with Jo and Scorp, sitting together and playing chess.
Scorpius looked at her and frowned."Weasley, you look like shit."
He really had a way with words sometimes.
She glared at him."Thanks, Malfoy." She turned to Lily, Albus, and Hugo, "Can I talk to you guys for a second?"
Confused, they nodded and she led them to a more secluded area and looked down, suddenly feeling suffocated having their eyes on her.
"Rose," Al said sternly."What the fuck is going on?"
She looked back at him, took a deep breath, and began to tell them what had happened, trying not to ramble but she wasn't great at doing that.
"And...Yeah. She's doing good now, they said it's not unusual, given all she's been through and...Yeah. She'll be home soon."
Lily immediately started crying, and Hugo hugged her, looking at his sister."She seemed...Okay? Though? She's okay now?"
Rose looked down again, then nodded."Yeah, she was up and talking," She smiled slightly."She even yelled at dad for being an ass."
He laughed slightly and Al glared at him."Rose, are you being serious right now?" She looked at him, surprised, and opened her mouth
"No, don't. You opened that letter, in front of us, in front of me, and you lied about it and then left on your own. You're supposed to be my best friend Rose, you don't do stuff like that alone! And without telling me! You do everything by yourself, and it's not fair for me! She's my nana too! You're always being nosey about our lives, but then when it's something that actually concerns us, you shut us out and tell us about it six hours later! So what? You can be the gold star grandchild who shows up at the hospital? And now we have to wait until she gets home and we can get there? Merlins Beard Rose, is this a competition too?"
By this point, everyone had begun to stare and Rose's eyes were glued onto the floor as she blinked back tears. She opened her mouth to speak but the knot that had built in her throat kept her from saying anything and Scorpius and Jo walked over.
"Alright, people, the show's over." Jo yelled, looking around the room at everyone staring."I said, show over!" Everyone's eyes snapped down as Scorpius wrapped his arm around Al and led him away, throwing a long look at Rose as Jo wrapped her arms around her. Hugo and Lily stepped back, looking terrified. Nobody had ever heard Al yell like that, to anyone, and especially not Rose.
Jo smoothed down her hair as she hugged her tightly, as Rose stood still, trying not to cry.
"Oh Rosie, are you okay? Do you want me to go yell at him? Hex him?" She asked, looking at her sympathetically.
Rose laughed forcibly and shook her head."No, no, he's just...upset. He's not great at dealing with this stuff. He's scared, we all are."
"It still wasn't fair for him to yell at you like that."
She shrugged, wiping at the stray tears that managed their way down her face."Hey, I've never seen Al that emotional before. Maybe its a good thing." She said, smiling slightly."I have rounds tonight, I'm gonna go lay down before that."
Jo nodded, frowning."You sure you're okay?"
"Always am."
"I told him he was being a dick, you know."
Rose and Scorpius had been on rounds together for a half hour before he broke the awkward silence that had been lingering since they met in the hall outside the common room Rose had been screamed at two hours earlier.
She raised an eyebrow at him silently as she opened a broom closet, shutting it when she wasn't met with any horny teenagers-for once.
"And he knows he's being a dick. He knew it the moment he yelled at you."
"Well, he hasn't said anything to me." She mumbled
He rolled his eyes."He's being stubborn. Something you might know about?"
She frowned and fell silent again. She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, thinking about how much he resembled his mother. A lot of people see the blonde hair and grey eyes and easily liken him to his father, but his smile, his confidence, the twinkle in his eyes Rose saw when he was teasing her...All Astoria.
"He's right, though."
Rose frowned."Excuse me? I thought you just said he was being a dick! "
He shook his head at her, smiling as he pulled back a curtain and inspected to see if there was anything going on behind it."Oh, he was. But, he wasn't totally in the wrong. You should've had him go with you. They're not just your responsibility, and you don't have to do everything alone. You can ask for help every once in a while, you know."
She looked at him for a long moment, then glared."And, since when do you know so much about me?"
He smirked."Well, when you spend six years terrorizing someone, you tend to learn a lot about them."
She shook her head, blushing slightly."You're wrong, though. They are my responsibility. Sure, Al's mad, but I didn't know what kind of shape she'd be in when I got there, and sometimes he thinks he can handle things and he...can't." He opened his mouth to speak and she shook her head."So, shut up. Because you don't know me."
He shrugged, opening a door to an empty classroom."I'm sorry to hear about your nana, by the way."
"Thank you." She said stiffly."You know, Al sort of interrupted me before I got to tell him who her healer is." She smirked slightly.
He looked at her confused, then slowly, horrified. "no."
She grinned at him."Mhm."
"You met my mom?!"
She grinned nodding. "Oh, not only that, we're hanging out Saturday morning. She's giving me a tour of Stm. Mungos."
He gaped at her."You're going on a date with my mom?"
She laughed, rolling her eyes."Oh, calm down, she's probably just trying to scare off the crazy girl who hexes her son from coming to work with her. I didn't even know she'd know who I was." She said tentatively, suddenly feeling embarrassed.
He grinned at her as they reached outside of the Gryffindor dorms."What can I say, Rosie, you have left quite the impression on me."
She blushed and looked down, and he tilted her chin up with his finger."You sure you're okay?"
She nodded, shrugging, looking away from his face.
"Always am." They said in chorus, making her blush harder."I know, Weasley. Just...They're there for you too, when you need them." He looked ready to say something else and he shook his head."Goodnight, Rose."
"Goodnight, Malfoy." He took off and she watched him go, more confused than ever.
