A/N: While the entire world is waiting to know who is the new American President, here is a chapter to help you all pass the time. And what better chapter than one of the Major Crimes best scenes?!
Many thanks to dear blossom-of-snow for editing this story.
Sharon watched Andy closely as they waited for the elevator to stop on the 11th floor of their building. He had been jittery since they left work. On the ride home, whenever she asked him if he felt alright, or if he was angry or upset, he dodged her question by smiling and telling her not to worry, which only made Sharon worry more. As they walked towards the condo door, Sharon hoped that once they were home, Andy would feel comfortable sharing the reason for his odd behavior with her. Andy unlocked the door, and Sharon could immediately hear the soft music playing in the condo.
"I understand you don't like surprises, but…"
"Surprises? What –" Sharon soughed as she noticed several bouquets of red roses and multiple lit candles strategically placed around the living room. Something was definitely going on, but she wasn't sure what it was yet. She noticed Rainie at one corner of the room, lighting a candle, and just past her, a table was set for two on the balcony.
"Ignore me, I'm just on my way out," Rainie said happily as she grabbed her backpack from the couch and slung it over her shoulder.
"Rainie, what is all this?" Sharon asked, unsure if she could handle the answer.
"This? This is all Andy Flynn," Rainie said and beamed at Andy. Her daughter whispered something to Andy and went out of the condo, leaving Sharon and Andy alone.
"Well, since we couldn't go out to dinner the other night, I thought that I would bring dinner to you," he said as his hand snuck around her waist.
That was incredibly sweet of him, and Sharon felt her insides turning into mush. Andy was always full of surprises, and in moments like these, she realized how good it felt being in a relationship with a man who cherished her. It was easy to tell herself that this beautiful evening was simply about Andy showing him he loved her.
When Andy mentioned that he ordered their dinner from Serve where they had their first date, her illusion took another blow.
Sharon let Andy lead her towards the balcony. Maybe he just wanted to have a romantic evening. But involve Rainie?
"Um, I've been doing a lot of thinking lately," Andy said, and Sharon could sense his anxiety again. It made her a bit nervous, too, so, in an effort to calm them both, closed her fingers around his striped tie.
"Okay," she said softly, prompting him to continue as her hand slid down the silky tie. She wasn't sure where Andy was going with this, but she started catching on to his plan.
"About… about you, about me, and how living together could be only the beginning."
Sharon felt the possibility she'd pushed away morphing into hope. Whatever Andy wanted to say, it sounded promising.
Andy turned around and closed the balcony door, and Sharon could hear him inhaling deeply. When he turned around and kneeled, Sharon's heart skipped a beat. Was it real?
"Sharon, my love, will you marry me?" Andy asked as he presented her with a red velvet box.
It took Sharon a moment to process what was happening. Her gaze moved between Andy's hopeful eyes and the glistening ring he was holding, marveling at the happiness she could have with the utterance of one word. "Yes. Yes! Andy, yes!"
Andy stood up, and Sharon pulled him to her and pressed her lips to his.
"I love you so much," she said. She wanted to say more, to tell him she never thought she would be this happy again, but he returned the sentiment and kissed her again. Oh. Then there was nothing but his lips and tongue, one of his hands skimming up her back to rest in her hair, the other holding the velvet box and her ring. Her ring.
"Andy," she whispered against his lips. "Aren't you forgetting something?"
At Andy's watery laugh, Sharon cupped his face in her hands, thumbing aside his tears as he took the ring out of its box with a shaking hand. Forehead still resting against Sharon's, Andy peeled her left hand from his face, kissed her palm, and slid the silver band onto her ring finger.
"You've made me so happy," she whispered. "And now I get to spend the rest of my life being this happy with you."
After they managed to unglue their hands and lips from each other, they sat down to eat their dinner.
"So, Rainie knows about this, right?" Sharon motioned between herself and Andy as she removed the bell that covered her plate.
"Yes, I talked to her about it. I know that she had issues with our relationship in the beginning, and I thought it would be fair to ask for her blessing before I proposed to you. She was very positive about it, and as you probably noticed, she helped me plan this evening."
Sharon felt her heart melt inside her. Every time she noticed another progress in Rainie and Andy's relationship, it made her so proud of both of them. Rainie and Andy were both very headstrong, and it felt like a little miracle to watch their relationship develop so much in such a short time.
"We should take a selfie and send it to her," Andy suggested and fished his phone out of his pocket.
Sharon nodded and moved her chair closer to Andy's so they could take a selfie.
"Show her the ring," Andy said, and Sharon lifted her hand, so it was visible on Andy's screen.
She said 'YES!' Andy texted the photo to Rainie, along with a ring emoji.
"Do any of my other children know about this?" Sharon asked. "Or yours?" She added as the realization struck her that now she was going to be a stepmother to Andy's children as well.
"No, only Rainie."
"We have to let them know," Sharon said.
"We can Skype with Emily and Ricky tomorrow, and then we can call Nicole and Kevin."
"Yes, that sounds like a good idea," Sharon said. "I don't want to spoil the mood, but did Rainie have any questions about this?"
"You mean about my role in her life from now on?" Andy asked.
Sharon nodded.
"Not really. She just wanted me to promise I'll treat you well," Andy said. His phone dinged with a video of Rainie throwing confetti at the camera. He showed it to Sharon. "See? She's happy for us. She wants this for you."
Sharon smiled and kissed Andy. "Thank you," she said when their lips parted.
"For what?"
"For making me love surprises again," Sharon replied.
Her heart felt so full tonight. It was full of love, light, and trust. She couldn't wait for what the future brought for Andy and her and their beautiful family.
