Prologue - A kingdom fallen

Smoke billowed behind her as the young woman stumbled and fell to the ground. She groaned and rose shakily to her feet. She glanced down at herself covered in cuts, bruising and blood. Her back ached, she felt faint from blood loss but knew she had to keep going. Her dress was soaked with the blood of her family and her. Tears slipped from her eyelids and poured down her cheeks. The woman looked back to the crumbling palace as the fire raged. Images of the bodies of her friends and family were burned into her memory.

Choking back a sob she whispered "they died to protect me" taking a deep breath "I won't let it be in vain." She had a duty to protect the silver crystal; the one stone that kept the darkness at bay. She had to keep moving, picking up the hem of her dress she began to race to the meeting point.

"Princess!"

"Pluto!" she cried crashing into the waiting arms of the time guardian.

"Thank the stars you are safe. I was worried you would not make it"

"Oh Pluto they are all gone! He murdered them all" she sobbed.

Pluto gathered the crying woman into her arms. "Shhh I know your Highness but you must pull strength from the fact that they did it to protect you" as she brushed the tears away. The Princess took a deep breath and tried to collect herself

"I know, I just thought we had more time. We were so ill-prepared for their attack"

"Time is a fickle thing. It is every changing your Highness"

"What do we do now Pluto?"

The time guardian pulled back from the princess and stood tall "we do nothing" she stated. "I'm going to send you where you will be safe." She began to twirl her long black staff in a circle, the outline of a portal opening behind her.

"What?" the young Princess questioned, "Are you not coming with me?"

"No your Highness, someone must stay behind to ensure he will never be able to follow you"

Pluto suddenly felt the young woman's hands clutch her shoulders. "NO!" she yelled "come with me, I do not know what to do and I do not want to lose another one that I love." A white portal opened behind Pluto, "you will be okay" she stated as she removed her fierce grip and pressed an envelope into her hand. "This has everything you need to know including who you will contact when you arrive."

A loud explosion went off as the air filled with smoke and ash. "They are not far your Highness it is time, do you have your brooch?"

The Princess clutched her brooch to her chest and stood tall with a strong determined look in her eyes, "yes, I will protect the crystal with my life. No harm will come to do, I will keep the balance." A Princess had turned into a Queen right before Pluto's eyes.

"Go now and remember those you love will be amongst the stars, watching over you" she whispered as she hugged her Princess one last time.

The Princess gathered what little courage she had and ran through the portal. It closed instantly behind her. Pluto turned to face the incoming soldiers and their despicable leader.

"HAHA" he chuckled "you have not stopped me, Time Guardian, merely delayed the inevitable." He glowered at her "the Princess oh sorry" he unsheathed his sword "Queen now that I've killed her mother; she will fall by my hands and the crystal will be mine to control."

Pluto glared "not if I have a say in the matter!" Taking the time staff in her hands, she snapped it into two destroying any ability to use it. The staff crumbled in a pile of white dust.

"WHAT DID YOU DO?!" he bellowed.

"Making sure you will never find her" she smirked, "I've sent her far away from here."

The man screamed in anger and a flash drove his sword through Pluto's stomach and out her back. She gasped as blood spilled from her lips, her life starting to slip away.

"Did you know your Queen cried over the body of her husband? And begged for the life of her daughter?" he whispered in her ear. "It is fruitless. I will fill her heart with darkness, take control of the crystal and rule the galaxy."

He pulled his bloodied sword from her body and she crumbled to the ground. She could feel the life draining from her body as the man stalked away, barking orders. Pluto blinked slowly staring at the sparkling sky above.

"Serena please be safe and be happy" she whispered as the last breath escaped her body.
