Chapter One – The First Encounter

Sesshomaru was sick of travelling, it had been almost eight weeks since he was last home. Home where his five-year-old daughter Rin was waiting. Travelling was not the way he wished to spend his time but as the heir to the Taisho Corporation, it was his responsibility. Taisho Corp was an expansive company that had dealings in business, healthcare and education. However, below the surface of the extremely profitable company was the true mission; protect yokai culture. The majority of employees were either yokai, hanyou, Miko, monk or humans that belonged in some way. His father; Toga, oversaw the company as Lord of the West and had been since he established it decades ago when yokai and hanyou first became known to humans. Their main mission was to protect their community and ensure their continuation in human society. Their community did not have the best history assimilating into general society but had made great strides in the past few years. Sesshomaru would one day take over Taisho Corp when his father decided he no longer wanted to be Lord and Alpha.

Sesshomaru was not an emotional being. Most would describe him as emotionless and stoic. He smirked 'ice prince', that was his nickname for decades. Only one individual could get any true emotional reaction and that was Rin. He loved his adopted daughter with all of his existence and would kill anyone who would even think to harm her. Although they aggravated him to no end, he did care immensely for his family. His father, his stepmother Izayoi, Inuyasha, Kagome and their adopted son Shippo. Not to mention the strays his father had adopted into their pack; Miroku, Sango, Koga, and Ayame. Sesshomaru rarely showed it, for his family would never let him live it down but he loved them deeply. Sesshomaru settled into his Audi Nanuk Quattro and let it roar to life.

He rubbed his hands on the steering wheel and thought 'ahh there she is, the only female I ever intend to keep.' This car was his pride and joy, not even Rin was allowed to drive in it. His Audi was meant for Sesshomaru's pleasure only. He shifted her into drive and tore down the road towards the office. Once back at head office, he strolled into his father's office not bothering to knock. He no longer wanted to travel as much as he had been.

"Father that trip was a waste of my time and I refuse to return" Sesshomaru stated. "Hello to you my dear son. How are you, father? Oh, I'm well, how are you son?" Toga mocked. Sesshomaru let out an audibly growl as Toga chuckled and the small female beside him let out a quiet giggle. That is when he noticed her presence. Her scent washed over him like a wave and his beast suddenly roared to life for the first time in his long life.

Sesshomaru examined the petite woman, she stood 5'6 to his 6'4 frame. Her skin was milky white like porcelain and blonde hair flowed down her back to her waist. It was like sunshine flowing across her body. Her body was toned and curvy in all the right places.

'Mate' his beast purred leaving Sesshomaru incredibly confused. 'Who is this woman? She is not human. Why is my beast so reactive to her?' he thought. His beast wanted nothing more than to caress her body with his large hands. She had perfect pink lips and full lashes that framed her most unusual eyes. They were a crystal bright blue that reminded him of a sky on a cloudless day. Her face held not a stitch of makeup nor did she need it, he did not enjoy a woman caked with makeup covering what was naturally beautiful.

His father coughed pointedly getting Sesshomaru's attention and smirked. "Sesshomaru, I should introduce you to our newest employee. This is Serena Luna" Toga said as he gestured to the young lady. 'So the mysterious woman has a name' mused Sesshomaru.

She smiled softly and stuck out her hand. "Hi' she said delicately "I'm the new director for the education wing. I think I have met your lovely daughter Rin." Sesshomaru grasped her small hand smoothly and breathed deeply taking in her scent. She smelled of pure vanilla with a hint of honeysuckle and something he could not place. 'Hmmm, there is a hint of pure power there, what an interesting little star' he thought as he gazed down at her. He held her gaze intently trying to figure her out.

"Yes, my daughter Rin started this year. She spoke to this one about her new favourite teacher that she had been spending a lot of time with, am I to assume that is you?" he asked noticing the faint blush on her cheeks. Toga smirked behind Serena's back. He could smell his son's attraction to the young female and was pleased. Toga had been wanting Sesshomaru to find someone to do more than merely rut, he wanted him happy and settled down. When he met Serena, he was delighted to see how easily she fit into their family. Now with the look his son was giving her, Toga had a feeling she may become family.

"Yes, I suppose I am" Serena replied softly trying desperately to keep her breathing even as her heartbeat began to speed up. 'Now what could be causing that reaction I wonder' mused Sesshomaru 'our mate is attracted to us, take her now' his beast roared. Sesshomaru shoved him to the back of his subconscious. He would never take a mate, he never felt any need for one nor had had he ever fell in love.

"She was just informing me of Rin's progress," Toga said, "and some new changes she wants to propose." Serena pulled her hand back acutely aware of how long they were in that position. His hand had felt warm in her hand. Her blush deepened and she cleared her throat "yes, your daughter is very bright and talented for her age" she began.

Serena flipped through Rin's file, glancing over her assessments and past scores. She had come to adore Rin ever since the first day she met her. Rin seemed to feel the same, running to Serena's office every time she was in the building and wanting to spend all her time with her.

"She loves to read and has already shown aptitude in maths and the arts" as she handed him a drawing of a small cottage with a beautiful garden covering the grounds. Sesshomaru felt himself unintentionally smile "she drew this?"

"Yes, it was once my home" Serena started getting a castaway look in her eyes "I was telling the children about it and she drew it."

Sesshomaru studied Serena's face and suddenly found himself wanting to ask her about where she grew up and what she was like.

He felt his pride swell as he looked to his father who held the same prideful expression. When it concerned his grandpups, the man had no spine. Rin could get anything she wanted from him and she knew it. Shippo was no better, the man could not say no to his grandpups and was extremely protective of them.

"You and your mate should be very proud of her," Serena said. At that moment, Sesshomaru felt the overwhelming need to tell her he had no mate.

"This one does not have a mate!" he exclaimed noting the shock then was that happiness? On her face. His father shot him an incredulous look, since when did his son care about someone else knowing his private business? Toga fought the urge to chuckle.

'Why do I care if she knows? I don't even know this woman' he thought. His beast was confusing him. This was not him in anyway shape or form.

"Oh my apologies" Serena stated "I did not mean any offence"

Serena smiled inwardly, she could not lie to herself that she wasn't happy about that confession. She found herself attracted to the silver-haired man standing in front of her. She kept that to herself trying to keep her arousal under check, she knew they would be able to smell that and that would be incredibly awkward for their first meeting.

"No offence taken," Sesshomaru said as he struggled to pull his emotionless mask in place.

"As I was telling your father, Rin has inspired me. I would like to start an advanced program for our students" she started "one class per grade made up of a mix of children and I would like to teach Rin's year. I admit I have become very fond of her these past weeks." He noticed her expression soften with the mention of his daughter in the way a mother would when speaking of her children. During his time away, Rin had spoken at length about her new favourite teacher. How she always made time for her, spending hours reading with her or having her "help" with her work. She even told him about when she took Auntie Kagome, Shippo and herself out for lunch and ice cream.

Serena bit her lip gently and fiddled with her hands. She prayed to the stars above they said yes to her proposition, she had so many ideas for the future of the Academy. Sesshomaru caught himself staring at her bitten lip, imagining what it would feel like to run his tongue across her lip and suck it between his teeth. 'What is wrong with me? I don't even know this woman. I don't want her' he thought 'yes you do, she is to be ours' his beast purred. He just needed to get laid, a quick rut and he would be fine.

His daydream was interrupted by his father's loud voice. "That's a wonderful idea, my dear!" Toga boomed "I knew from the moment Kagome handed me your resume you were going to do wonderful things here." His father stared shocked to see his normally stoic son acting like a pup in heat. He could smell his son's arousal coat the air, it made him want to wrinkle his nose in disgust. Sesshomaru knew that his father had caught him daydreaming about his little star 'little star? Good kami what I wrong with me?' He threw up his cold mask.

"Well thank you for your confidence, sir," Serena grinned clasping her hands in happiness "I will not let you down"

Toga put his hand on her shoulder and smiled down at her. She reminded him of someone very dear to him, perhaps that's why he had a weak spot for her. Izayoi teased him about it when she first met Serena but soon found herself loving her as well. She gushed about how sweet and kind-hearted she was.

"My dear, how many times do I need to tell you? Call me Toga"

"Yes si-I mean Toga" she laughed softly.

Sesshomaru tried to maintain his unreadable expression

"Yes I agree, you may proceed but I want a detailed plan on my desk by next week."

Serena broke out in a brilliant smile that could brighten the darkest of rooms "Yes! Yes of course" she said as she shook their hands. She quickly rambled her appreciation as she bowed and practically sprinted from the room. As if she was frightened they would change their minds. Sesshomaru chuckled lightly at the young woman's behaviour, she was exquisite and he was determined to figure her out.

Sesshomaru than looked to his father who held a smirk on his face. "What?" he grumbled as he settled into a chair rubbing his face. Toga simply laughed "nothing" he walked behind his desk and sat down "just never thought I'd live to see the day." Sesshomaru sighed "what day are you referring to?"

"The day my son, the ice prince himself met a woman he wanted" Toga stated looking smug. Sesshomaru let out a dissatisfied growl as his father's laugh echoed throughout the office.

Serena leaned against the door and let out a breath she hadn't realize she was holding. She walked back to her office thinking about the man she just met. 'So that is Sesshomaru' she thought 'he is so beautiful and just as intimidating as Kagome warned'. She had never felt safe in anyone's presence because she knew she wasn't. One day he was going to find where she was and kill her but when he walked in. Yes, he intimated her but also somehow she never felt safer then she did in his presence. Her hand fluttered to her chest, she could feel it. The pull. It was so strong.

Everyone is born with an invisible string attached to their souls, the very essence of who they are. The other end leads straight to their soul match. The soul born for theirs and theirs alone. Lunar children could see this connection. You could fall in love with someone who wasn't connected to you but it would never fulfill your soul. Lunar Royalty, on the other hand, could be with no other then their souls match. The silver crystal demanded it. Only a love as pure and true as the protector of the crystal could exist.

Serena sighed as she sat at her desk with her head in her hands. She came back home because it was time to move on again. Every ten years, she moved because people start to question why she was not ageing after that. Serena really thought Taisho Corp would be safe. The company was massive and filled with hundreds of yokai, hanyou and people with spiritual abilities. Hopefully, that would mask the powerful signature that the silver crystal could leave. She always tried to stay in a place where she could hide. Even if Sion found out she was on Earth, she was hopeful he would not detect her here. She felt a semblance of safety for the first time in almost fifty years. She even used her real name for once. But now, here was this man who her soul was screaming out for. She wanted to wrap herself in his arms and push her lips against his. She wanted to know him in every sense of the word.

"Why did I have to meet him now?" she groaned.

"Meet who?"

Serena's head shot up and glared at the raven-haired woman standing in her doorway.

"Kagome! You scared me half to death" she chided her.

Kagome laughed as she moved to sit in front of her desk. "Sorry, I was coming to see if you wanted to join us for lunch" her brown eyes sparkled in amusement "but now I am more interested in this mysterious him that has you all flustered," she said pointedly. Kagome knew Sesshomaru was coming back home and hoped to introduce the pair.

"No one…do not worry about it. Lunch sounds great" she jumped up coming around to the other side "shall we go then?" she asked. She hoped that would distract the woman from inquiring more. Kagome had a way of getting her to talk even when it was a topic she wanted to stay miles away from. They had spent many long nights at the office drinking wine and talking. Serena did not normally get close to people at work but Kagome had a way of worming her way in.

"Oh no, you aren't getting out of this so easily. I've known you for almost two months now and you have never taken a second glance at a man" Kagome started getting extremely close to Serena's face. "Don't make me get Sango" she threatened.

Serena's eyes widen in fear "GAH! No okay okay. I met Sesshomaru and he was just very intimidating alright?" She prayed that got her off the hook.

Kagome looked disappointed and sighed crossing her arms "damn I was hoping for more of a romantic confession. You know like I stumbled in the arms of my soul mate." She dramatically fell against Serena looking at her all doe-eyed, Serena holding her up. Serena couldn't help but laugh 'you have no idea how close you are Kagome.'

"You are ridiculous" Serena rolled her eyes.

Kagome grabbed her hand "oh well! Come let's go meet everyone" she stated dragging her down the hall to the elevator.

Earlier:

"Oh stop your growling boy," Toga said as he rose from behind his desk. Sesshomaru scowled hoping his father would not press the issue of the girl further.

"I know I asked a lot of you this last trip, especially with Rin. But it will be your last. I feel this new expansion of our alternative education will be extremely beneficial" as he leaned his large frame against the edge of his desk. He felt bad always spending his son on his trips but he had to be the one to do it. One day he would take over the mantle as CEO and alpha, their various offices and clients needed to see his face and respect his authority. This was the best way he knew to do it. Sesshomaru could come off as cold sometimes but once people met him and conversed with him, they saw why he was chosen.

"Explain"

"Well, you met her" Toga began "She has her Ph.D. in education and masters in History plus she is only 24! Imagine our luck. When HR sent me her resume I knew she would be perfect."

Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes. His father always had something up his sleeve, something else lurking behind the shadows.

"For what exactly Father?" he questioned

"We have a good private school for yokai, hanyou and spiritual children but I want it to be the best in the world!" Sesshomaru grunted for his father to continue.

"I am Lord of the West. Our family looks after those with yokai and spiritual DNA" Toga explained "It is our privilege. I want a school known across our community for providing a safe and reputable place for all children where they can be educated to thrive in both worlds."

"You sound like a commercial" Sesshomaru scoffed loudly

Toga chuckled and shook his claw at his son

"But a convincing one you have to admit"

"And what of the families that cannot afford this new school? Our tuition is not cheap for a reason. We provide education and security for some of the highest level families including our own" Sesshomaru questioned. Although he agreed that having an Academy where all children from their society could be educated would be beneficial to them as a species

Toga smiled with a glint in this eye. 'Clearly, he has thought of that' he thought 'why do I have a feeling I am not going to like this'

"Hence why Serena has an office up here. You and she will plan a benefit for before the beginning of the school year to raise money for…" he drummed his hands on his thighs in anticipation "The first annual scholarship to West View Academy."

"A benefit?" Sesshomaru wanted to groan, he had a terrible feeling where this was headed. He was going to have to work on this little pet project for his father. He cast a quick glance at the door where Serena had walked through. But that would mean he would get to work with her, be close to her and learn more about her.

"Yes! We will invite all of society and their bottomless pockets plus Taisho will match the donations dollar for dollar. Good publicity for us"

Sesshomaru rose to his feet and crossed his arms across his broad chest.

"Hence why I am no longer travelling" Sesshomaru reasoned "You want me to work on your passion project." He had to admit the idea of being so close to her was not entirely terrible.

"Oh cheer up my boy!" Toga smacked Sesshomaru on the back "I saw how you looked at her and I could smell how you reacted to her. Maybe this will be your passion project" wiggling his eyebrows at him.

"Hn"

Toga opened his office door and pushed him out.

"Father…" Sesshomaru started.

Toga sighed "Yes son" waiting for the argument to begin as to why it was a ridiculous notion.

Just then Kagome and Serena passed arm in arm smiling and laughing. Sesshomaru took a deep breath in, drinking in her scent. It was heavenly. Turning to his father he inquired "What is she? She is not yokai or Miko but is not human."

Toga nodded "I know I am not sure but she asked I didn't pry and assured me her only focus was the children. We did a background check and nothing suspicious came up" He recalled how her scent was overwhelmed with pain and sorrow "Something about her aura feels so familiar. I figure she will divulge when she ready, she has given me no reason not to trust her."

Sesshomaru shifted his gaze to the young woman besides his sister in law. She was an enigma and his beast had not stopped humming in the back of his mind. Who was this girl?
